RE: How High?
well i have a "how high" its in my 2mtr, not in my 100" wing plane id guess the 100" would be higher. but as for the 2mtr on a 50 ft piece of rubber and abt 150+ ft of line and a nice 5-10mph breeze in my face i get just over 200ft. With a "high start" im at 350-400 ft with same wind cdx. with our club winch its 600ft easy with no zoom on my woodie wings. That to bad about your clubs limits,,,,i hate it when politics and wanab polititions feel the power to change things,,,,, or did faa make your club make the new rule?

RE: Flying the SIG Riser
Also sylvie as mentioned in your first post,, "tons of nose weight" to balance.,,,i have drilled out the nose of my balsa nose cones from the front to get the weight i needed farther forward,,,as was mentioned in the article the fulcrum effect. the lighter the plane if balanced proberly flies better and should be able to fly/glide with no control other than to turn when wanted. and if wind comes up you employ ballast,,,ballast is your friend on those windy days, instead of your plane after launch "standing still" in air from the wind/breeze it will "penetrate".

RE: I cant hear my sail plane...
im familiar with the "swoosh" while slope soaring on the dunes at ft story, va with a 30+ mph north wind and so much ballast.,,it still amazes me how i never snapped wings in half out there. i would program the ailerons and vtail to work together and make some, fast, sharp, turns, and listen for the swoosh over the wind only feet away , the 60" winged planes must have been going 50-60+mph,, only problem was my eyes would water ,and of course a soft landing with an overly ballasted plane.

RE: I cant hear my sail plane...
i heard my 2mtr scratch build saturday as i messed up coming out of a thermal about 1,500 ft ,,we all heard it moments after it reappeared from the bottom of a cumolus cloud as the tail area fluttered,,it got louder as it got closer to the terafirma, couldnt turn it off, it was very loud as the vertical stab hit a tree limb a few hundred yards away from were we stood, kind of like a 22lr round going off, then it didnt make a sound after that. kind of like yours i guess.

RE: Great Planes Spirit
i have a few 2mtr planes and my gl (which has been so much repaired ie. spliced fuse, tape all over, plastic coke bottle cut out hatch cover,, it is a lil embarrassing to take to field with others around ) is very nice flier with a flat bottom or spectra wing s3014 on it,, but the fuse on the gl is 4" longer than the spectra/spirit fuse (these two are same lenght from te to hor stab ,.....i switch wings and change the declanage of flat bottom wings and s3014 yet a can not get the short stubby fuses to work nearly as well as the 4" longer gl....so as a hacker of planes ive taken a spirit fuse and added 4" inches to the tail by gluing 2 pieces of ply together and stuck the extension up the rear of fuse,(being caful to keep in line the same angle incidence ) and extended the nose by 5 inches...i balast the nose of my planes by drilling holes in the extended balsa and inserting 45 acp or 38 special bullets to put weight as forward as i can.. we maiden this week and it seems like it will have the same charactor of plane as the gl,,, ill keep you posted on the mod...also ive made the rudder a lil bigger in sq. area to help turn with less drag. charles river has an article to make you spirit behave better than stock,,,but im still not happy and want more so such are the hacking mods.

RE: How much wind needed for slope soaring?
welcome to rc universe,,, your question depends on your plane,,i have flown with as little as 5mph on a slope and was able to "keep" my plane up.. it has much to do with the shape of your "slope" the wind direction to the face of slope, (consintrating wind/lift focus) and the weight of your plane to wing area...i think they call it "wing loading". im not very versed in the terminolagy and scientific words but i can speak threw my experiance of years of sloping albeit from mountain cliffs, mount trashmores, bumps in land scape, or off the side of a large building.. in va bch we have a "board walk" with 14 story hotels facing east for many city blocks/miles and with a good throw or bungie assist we can work the air up and down the board walk as it hits the east/ocean side of building. typically due east. lite wind ie. 5-10 mph equals light plane, 10- 35 mph means add some balast, or you will shurley hit a balcony loose plane or worse.... so i would say in short to answer too your question "it" depends on conditions and your plane and "any" lift is good lift .. now work to take advantage of the lift.. have fun jeff

RE: Gullows kit - clear dope?
i still use 50/50 elmers/ water....I.apply to wood let set till tacky, lay tissue paper over wood ,,dont worry if there is lil sag,,, let dry,,, with a soft brush use same mix and apply to paper let dry...as it drys it will tighten up the paper,,,repeat for a couple coats.....also some people use hair spray to make it a harder finish......gl.. my last guillows was a p-47 a couple months ago and i planked the fuse,,sheated the wings,,, full house,,,flaps ailerons, elevator, rudder and put a park 480 electric in it....im waiting for my next build to arrive its a skybench olly IIs and i plan on putting electric in it also....i like building as much or more than flying.....

RE: need help w/ ideas (beginer)
if you dont have money you might try out the spads they are made from those plastic signs you see on the side of the road for elections ,yard sales etc.,there are websites devoted to this extremely inexspensive building mode, and some mind blowing creations that fly very well they say. there might be a forum here but ive seen one at rcworld,,,,,or just google" spads rc airplanes" gl have fun my friend.
