RE: *World Models 70
I've been flying in 95 degree heat so I assume I'm alright! The plane is used and had a Saito 180 in it initialy, a large portion of the bottom is cut out for cooling for the 180 (not sure if the valve covers stuck out). It's a big hole and I was glad that I didn't have to do it. It might be that you'll need to add something on the bottom to increase the air through it. If you saw how big the hole in the bottom of my cowl was you'd understand why I don't have overheating issues! From the muffler back is probly about 4" and it's about 3" wide (the cut out). Had I built the plane origionally I would not have had such a big hole in it. Seems to work though. Thanks by the way! Fun plane....

RE: *World Models 70
I'm in Colorado at around 5000' using an 18x8, the DLE has only 3/4 gallon of break in through it so I assume I'll be seeing more power/speed as the break in progresses. It's just about right for now, as I fly and get used to it I'm sure I'll be able to handle more speed but for now it's just my style (I have an 18x10 drilled and ready for that day). As for the elevator, one was a .60 sized Top Flight and the other was the giant scale Top Flight Kit both planes had the identical elevator position at neutral. Since it is not pitch sensitive and it does not pitch up or down when the throttle is abruptly reduced from full I can only assume it's pretty close. I've also done the 45 degree up line inverted and it drops the nose in a large arc, level inverted flight uses less than 1/4 stick of down to maintain. I'll also add that I ditched the DLE muffler and used one from an SPE 26CC motor. It's got an angled front that allows me to keep it inside the cowl (see photos earlier in this post of the other 30cc jug). It may reduce the RPM's slightly but only time and a tach will tell. I was strapped for cash so I opted not to use the Pitts muffler thinking I would have plenty of power. I had to elongate the holes in the muffler to make it fit but the port seems to line up nicely.

RE: *World Models 70
Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I thought I’d share my Jug just in case. It’s got a DLE30 and a Great Planes LiFe (2100mA) running everything. I used an ignition battery eliminator/optical kill for the motor to save weight and it came out at 11lbs 4Oz. CG is at 4 ¾” and it feels perfect, it fly’s light and with authority. I found that the elevator needed to be set up looking like it was a flat bottom airfoil, not a symmetrical as you would expect. We discovered this to be true with 2 other Jug’s at the field. I set it up symmetrical and ran out of down trim trying to get it to fly level on the maiden. Just put a ruler on the bottom of the horizontal stab and bring the tip of the elevator down close to the ruler. It’s no speed demon so don’t think the DLE is over powered but the climb outs are awe inspiring! I can do a short takeoff (20 ft), pull up the gear and point it straight up until it’s a dot! Then a pattern roll inverted and a half loop to bring it down the runway for a strafing run. It is my first Warbird and I fly mostly your average sport planes. It is an awesome Warbird trainer! It’s still on the factory gear because it handles so well. I can drive it the entire length of our 800’ runway on the mains and lift off when I please. Landings for me are done with a small amount of flap (what you would use for takeoff). It really does not need the flaps as it slows wonderfully. Fly with a little power to the threshold, cut to idle when a few feet of the ground and lightly push the mains on the runway. I hold the tail up till I stall the elevator and it sets down ever so gently. At this point she is moving at a brisk walk and it simply rolls to a stop. Very forgiving plane, I love it! Here is flight number 4 from start to finish!

RE: Charging LiFe through switch
Looks like an old post but I don't see any responces. Did you find out what the problem was, I'm having the exact same issue and it looks as though it's the switch. The interesting part is if I disconnect the swtich from the reciever my charger tells me the circuit is open (no battery connected even though it is). I assume this has something to do with the "redundancy" part of the swtich.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Thought I'd update you cub lovers on my conversion. This is my H9 previously on a 26cc gasser with a gemini hanging off the front. I've converted it to ignition and plan (eventually) on converting it to gas. It swings a 17-6 @ 8300 on 5% nitro and idles slow enough to read the prop manufacturer! Housed entirely inside a Dave Patrick super cub cowel. Home grown mufflers get the sticky stuff out of the engine compartment too.

RE: E85
Rdabaghian, I just converted an older os 160 Gemini (serial number is in the 600's!) to spark as well. I started with 5% nitro fuel and OS F's to get the benchmark (17/6 @ 8200 RPM). Then I tore the motor down so I could drill and tap screw holes for the ignition pickup, replacing all the bearings in the process. Same fuel on spark yielded a 100 RPM increase (old plugs or 30 degree advance?). I've got the old style air bleed carb so idle is not as spectacular as yours is. Then I mixed up a gallon of E85 w/ 20% Klotz and gave it a whirl. Fired right up and after I leaned out the high end about 1/2 turn and got 7800 on the same prop, 8000 was possible but I was worried I was running too lean. Idle was the same, cylinder head temp appeared to be higher as well and it does seem to be sensitive to needle setting. As a test when running nitro, I added a catch can to the crank vent to see how much oil ran through the crank case after an 6 oz fuel run, it appeared to be a little less then an ounce (my ratio right only goes to 2 oz so it was a big guess). After a similar run with the E85 mix I got only about 1/3 the oil in the catch can (due in part to a leaner needle setting I'm sure). That has me slightly concerned that the motor is not receiving enough oil to protect the vitals. I'm on the fence about continuing with the E85. I love the cost, oh and it smells so good when the motor is running. I've got video of the engine running on both fuels, once I get them uploaded I'll post.

Cyberwolf, Would love to see more photos of the 160 twin carb setup. I just got one and plan on a gas conversion as well. How did you plumb the carb pump pulse? I assume the crank case vent using a "T" but that's just an assumption. Looks great though, I need to machine a manifold and would love to see more photo's of yours if you have them. Thanks,

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Ha Ha, I agree... My first few flights with it were rather daunting I must admit. To make a nice scale right hand turn you have to use right rudder and a little left aileron and of course some elevator. It can be flown with right stick only but it looks like you are flying it with right stick only... I dable with helicopters, you cant even hover one without using the rudder.

Dave Patrick Super Cub cowl, Yes SPE, Side carb, Yes, the black rod sticking out is to actuate the choke. I need to shorten that up a bit and finish paining the cowl. Then if someone would only be kind enough to cut up a wing and install flaps so I don't have to blaze new ground...

I've installed a 26cc gasser (SPE), the plug is angled in the head and the motor is mounted at an angle. This allows for minimal "protusions". It's no power house believe me, but it works for me. You can see the two small holes I had to make, one is for the very tip of the plug cap and the other is for the exhaust.

Great job on your army cub, I'd like to follow suit but I've not found a super cub without the extra "glass" in the back to try to keep somewhat scale. When I do though, I'll turn it into a warbird more than likely.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Hey gang! Been watching this thread for quite a while (having fun of course). I've had one of these for a few years and finally got it out this last weekend for a real shakedown flight. FUN FUN FUN! I've outfitted mine with a SPE26cc Gasser hidden in a Fiberglass Specialties Super Cub cowl (for the Dave Patric Cub). Currently running NiMh but going to change to LIFE's so I can fly all day without charging. I also added the inflatable wheels after reading some of the posts here (5"). I found that adding a throttle curve was the key to a good take off. The line between too much throttle and just not enough is pretty narrow (at least the way my engine responded) and once you break that threshold the plane will turn hard to the left. With a throttle curve that gives me very fine control below 1/2 throttle It seems to broaden this range and is much easier to control. Doing this allows me to take off on the center line of the runway every time as long as I'm somewhat patient. It takes very little speed to get in the air so my takeoffs are all below 1/2 throttle. Landings are just plain fun! Chop the throttle, come in steep flair and let it settle on the mains. Advance the throttle to 1/3 and fly the tail, steer to keep it on the center line and drive it to the end of the runway before lifting off again. It looks awesome to see this cub trucking down the runway tail high (I've used as much as 600' of our 800' long runway doing this). Next thing I knew I had 3 members standing around me wanting me to repeat with comments from Mustang flyers like "wow, nice landing". Anyway, about the flaps. I'd love to add some to this plane, super Cub's just don't look right without them. Anyone done it yet? Pictures and details would be great. Here are some photo's of the day's outing. I agree, that's second on my short list right after turning on failsafe and observing the plane at full throttle. It can be handy to have known problems to see how things react. Next I'll try my backup ignition module followed by a new spark plug (hey, you never know). After that I'll stick in another 2.4 reciever, and after that, well uhhh... If I had to bet I'd go for a faulty ignition based on the first toasted battery but I want to make sure I cover all the bases. Thanks for the reply.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Hey gang, it's been quite a while since I posted. Sorry to see a good portion of you are still waiting for receivers, I got mine about 3 weeks after I put in for them. Anyhow, I had an issue at the field today that i thought I'd share as well as get some ideas on. I have a Seagul models Yak 54 with a SPE26cc gasser. The ignition is an RCXCell version (bought seperatly for a Ryobi conversion years ago). I've had this plane for a few years and flown the tread off the wheels (if you know what I mean). For Cristmas the little woman bougt me a new radio, I had to return it for an Aurora but the good news is we are still talking[:)]. Bottom line is i've been flying the Aurora since the beginning of the year with no issues at all, that is until now... About a month ago my brand new 4 cell NiMh ingition battery bitt the dust, one cell died completly during flight. after replacement I decided it was time to start moving the CG back in the plane so I Moved the bat from the engine compartment to the radio tray in the cutout designed for the battery. Today while flying I noticed the motor was cutting out at full throttle as well as erratic behavior (plane would quickly roll about 15 to 20 degrees without my input). when I reduced throttle the motor would run fine and no "glittching" behavior was noticed. I landed a teathered the plane to the ground and started it up. Full throttle would make all the servos go bonkers (not the throttle servo though?), I cant believe I did not dig a crater with this plane! I placed the radio in low power mode and walked about a mile away while the place was idling with no twitching noticable. Only during full throttle did I notice an issue. The real twist is the plane would not cut out at full throttle on the ground, when it did so severely in the air (only full throttle). I certainly don't want to point any fingers at my new Arora but I must admit it's rather embarasing to be the proud new owner of a shiney new 2.4GhZ radio and be getting what appears to be radio initerfierance! By the way the reciever is in the back half of the plane, the throttle servo is the only component that is close to the ignition battery. I have some theories but wanted to see if anyone else has seen similar issues with this or any radio or had any ideas. I did not have the failsafe feature set up so I think I will take the opprotunity to enable it while I'm having the problem and see just how it reacts to the apparent glitching! Sorry for the novel, but thanks for the time...

Don't recall anyone saying the ST2300 was heavy... said it was powerful... and cheap. I did state I was trying out an old Super Tiger muffler and it IS very heavy. I've got a gasser in mine and I did not need to move my rudder servo to the tail for balance. As for the canister, it's not too difficult to find a canister for small gassers, headers are the hard part but they are out there if you look.
