Newbie has gas engine questions
Hello fellow flyers, After flying the smaller stuff for years I've decided to have a go at a large airplane. My first project is a 1/3 Piper J-3 Cub. For power I have purchased a ZDZ 60 RV. It will swing a scale diameter prop and should provide plenty of power. Never having been involved with a gas burner, there are a few things I'm not sure about. I'd thought I'd run it by you folks here and maybe learn something. I will post labeled pics related to questions. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. First, the rod that operates the choke is unlike anything I've ever seen. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what kind of connector to use? Second, the throttle linkage is also unusual. Any suggestions for a suitable connector? Also, the throttle linkage is spring loaded and pretty tight. Do I need to keep this spring in place? Seems to me it would be plenty secure if it's attached to a good servo. Finally, the electronic sensor. It is to be powered by a 4 or 5 cell battery. Should I tap this off the receiver battery, or should I have a separate battery with an on/off switch installed? Thanks in advance! Gene

RE: Help with Vailly Fw190
Chuck, That link did the trick! I found a build thread dedicated to the exact model I have. Thanks! Tom, thanks for your input as well. I think I'm going to proceed with the 190 build. Between it and the plans it's all looking pretty clear. Best regards to you both. Gene Norman

RE: Help with Vailly Fw190
Tom, thanks for the input. My best bet might be to try and find a "build along" that I see posted here from time to time. Failing that I may just put the 190 on the backburner and go with a Yellow Aircraft kit. I've always loved the P-38, and my understanding is that theirs is quite nice. Regards Gene Norman

Help with Vailly Fw190
Greetings Everyone, I am ready to take on my first giant scale warbird. Recently I aquired a Vailly Aviation Fw190 project from a friend of mine who decided he would never get around to building it. It's basically unstarted, with the glass fuse and cowl, wood, plans, tail-wheel retract, etc. What I do not find is a set of building directions. Has anyone out there ever build this particular bird, and if so, might you have any suggestions on getting started? I have been an avid builder for many years. But I've never tackled anything like this before. I want to spend the whole winter and do a really good job. My only giant scale experience thus far has been a Balsa USA 1/3 J-3 Cub which, no disrespect to those fine folks, took much longer than it should have due to sometimes vague instructions. I can generally figure things out pretty well if I have to, but I would be a lot more comfortable with a good set of building instructions. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Gene Norman

Scott, As for price, I've seen those kits bring a pretty penny on eBay. That being said, those are really cool kits that bring back a lot of memories. If it has appeal to you I say build one and enjoy it! Gene

Hello everyone, I just spoke to Doss as well. Sure enough, he is considering producing again. I specifically asked him about his landing gear. He said he would consider setting his machine shop up again if there is sufficient interest. He doesn't want his contact info published on the net. But I will forward contact info to him. RE: tiger moth
Sounds good. Looks like the Premier kit might be for me. Turns out the 1/4 scale Moths are way too small for the ZDZ60, which means that one sized for the ZDZ would be way bigger than I would care to build. Besides, the more I think about it the Premier just seems the perfect size. Thanks again Gene

RE: tiger moth
Hi Dennis, Thanks for the info. Did you encounter any particular difficulties with the Premier kit? For example, any parts fit problems? I'm not bothered by it being a "builders kit" with lots of small parts. In fact, I welcome it. The size of you Moth appeals to me. But just out of curiosity do you know of any that are available in larger sizes? I have a ZDZ60 that's not doing anything at the moment. Again, many thanks for the comments. Regards Gene

RE: best light wheels?
Hi Matt, Hmmm...well, seems to me that wheels are neither gas or electric powered [:D]. Both gas and electric airplanes use wheels. Also, seems to me that weight consious modelers (gassie or otherwise) would naturally benefit from the input from e-fliers, who seem to be especially good at shaving weight. Now, I can understand your concern if I were to ask (here) for advice on tuning the ZDZ-60 on my 1/3 Cub. But wheels?? Common man! Lighten up (pun intended)[;)] After all, is there any law that says modelers of one persuasion can't help out a fellow modeler in another area?? By the way, for what it's worth, I am primarily an E-flier, and have been since I entered the hobby in 1989. Cheers Gene

RE: best light wheels?
Hi Matt, Thanks for the info. Turns out I was in error. The size needed is 2.75". Do you happen to know if the Great Planes wheels come in that size? Also, the model is a gassie (Scale Aeronca C3) so weight it not quite as critical. However, would be nice to keep the weight to a minimum anyway. Thanks! Gene [8D]

best light wheels?
Hi Everyone, A friend of mine is building a model that originally called for 3.25 inch Trexler baloon wheels. It appears that these are no longer available. I tracked a set on ebay and they went for nearly $30! Yikes! [X(] Does anyone one know of a suitable alternative? What are the lightest, yet sturdy, wheels in that size range. Thanks Gene[8D]

RE: WHAT OR WHO GOT YOU INVOLVED IN R/C FLYING OR C/L...
This post has been most enjoyable to read. I can still remember exactly how I got into the hobby of flying models. I had been a plastic model builder since about the age of 8 or 9. I loved airplanes, especially the WWII fighter types. It was on my 13th brithday that my mother gave me a Comet Super Stars Messerschmitt. This was the series that had the "X-wing, non-warping construction. I remember being totally baffled by the kit when I first got it. The 22"wingspan was HUGE compared to the plastic models I was familiar with. The box top said it was a scale model that could actually FLY. Well, I built is straight but heavy, owing to about three coats of Testors un-thinned blue dope..haha. It could gain altitude...but I'll never forget that it "power-glided" straight as an arrow for the whole length of my back yard. I was absolutely HOOKED. To me it wasn't a model airplane, it was one of the abbeville kids on a sorte :) I also remember having a few of the Testors "Fly-Em" series of .049 powered plastic control line models. I had the chrome P-51D Mustang and the Zero. Those were cool. They tended to start better than the Cox airplanes as I recall. Anyway, Happy flying Gene

RE: It looks Scale, It Flys Scale But it sound like ??
Jim Finn, I think you hit the nail right on the head. The primary source of sound in full-scale airplanes is the propeller cutting through the air. And this also applies to electric models. As such, electrics, small and large - but especially the larger ones - seem to produce a much more realistic sound and sound level. No offense to my gas-burning brothers, but the only somewhat realistic sounds I've ever heard coming from fuel burning models have come from throttled-back four strokes. But even these will generally sound a little rough and a little louder compared to their full-scale counterparts. Now, the really large-scale electrics can be absolutely amazing. I'll never forget seeing Keith Shaw's giant electrics at KRC a number of years ago. My favorite was his 1/3 Art Chester Goon and it sounded like a silky smooth running inline engine. And the sound LEVEL was just right. Like a full scale airplane, when it was out on the horizon you didn't hear it much, but as it came over the field it produced a great sound. The gassies are just so loud to begin with there's not much of a "fade in" or "fade out" of the sound as they go by. In my experience, throttled-back 4-stoke-powered Cubs sound "okay", large gas burning 2-strokes sound like chainsaws, and smaller 2-stroke glo engines sound.....well, absolutely nothing like real airplanes. By the way, just in case some might be tempted to assume that I'm down on the gassies in general, nothing could be further from the truth. My current project is a ZDZ 60 powered 1/3 scale Cub. Newbie question: mufflers
Hello Everyone, I am building my first gasser, a 1/3 Balsa USA J-3 Cub. I've been reading on here of all the various engine choices and I must say it's enough to make my head spin. One question I have concerns mufflers. I want to make the airplane look as scale as possible. J'TEC makes a muffler that is much smaller than the stock G-62 muffler. It's called an "in cowl" muffler and costs about $40. Then there is Slimline, which looks different and costs about $140. Both cut the profile of the motor down considerably. What are the relative advantages of these two mufflers? I'm assuming that there must be a reason why so many people would pay so much more for a Slimline or Bisson muffler. Any thoughts out there to help this confused newbie? Many thanks Gene

Best engine for 1/3 J-3 Cub?
Hi everyone, I'm finally building my first really giant scale model, a 1/3 Balsa USA J-3 Cub. I've heard that the G62 is a common engine for the airplane. But I would like to know of other suggestions. Ideally I would like something that would be a little easier to completely cowl in and perhaps be a little lighter. At the Joe Nall last year I saw an engine that I believe was made by Desert Aircraft. It was beautifully made and I think the fellow said it was slightly more powerful than a G62, but being specifically designed for model airplanes it was a little lighter and with a lower profile. Does this ring any bells for anyone? I think it might have been a DA50. One last thing, whatever engine I get I hope to eventually use in a large scale Focke Wulf Fw190A, such as the 90" model by Don Smith. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Best of regards Gene Norman
