RE: First Scratch Build
mclina. A great looking stik, well done with your scratch build. Good luck with the maiden. .25 size models are easy to transport, economical and usually give a good performance. I am sure that you will enjoy yours. All the best...Chris UK.

RE: Need help with Astro Hog crash cause
Dave, sorry to hear about the plane. 2 points, firstly did you check the lateral balance? i.e. was one wing heavier than the other? and secondly were both wings the same length? I have seen a few planes come to grief because of the first point. At slow speed the heavier wing will tend to drop which obviously is not ideal!! Chris UK.

RE: Sport twin recommendations
The Harmony twin is a great sport twin. If you google, Ripmax Harmony twin conversion, you should find a build log and video of my son's e-converted example. (on rc groups). I don't think that it is imported into the States perhaps because the one piece wing makes for a large kit box! In the UK it is a good value model and comes complete with retracts. I have a Seagull Dual Ace which I bought very cheaply from a model meet. It is also electric converted. The Dual Ace is another good model and there are plenty of threads with info about it..all good I think. It does not come with retracts and some people have noseleg issues but mine is as supplied but bolted and not screwed to the bulkhead. A great flier but in a different way to the Harmony. Good luck in your search...Chris UK

Simco, What motors and props did you use in the Skymaster? I agree about the poor quality of the wood used in these kits having some experience with a Piper Arrow that had a hard landing due to a radio problem and was almost disintegrated! Chris UK.

RE: Ugly Stick modifications
Scott, I am pleased that someone else from the UK is scratch building an Ugly Stik. I built mine last winter from free internet plans. It is an easy build and a great flier. Have a look on the scratch build forum under " jensen ugly stick build". It is a long thread but well worth the read. There are pics of mine on the thread. Mine is electric but I thought of putting an old Webra 61 blackhead in it. A saito in the range 70 -80 would go well. How about a new saito fg14 petrol 4 stroke? I think an os55 would go well ...but if you have been around for a while a PAW 61 diesel. As to the mods..no dihedral, dual aileron servo's, An irvine alloy u/c from your local hobby shop. My u/c is about 1/2" in front of the wing and works well. My wing and tail is covered with solartex and the fus is covered with profilm. All my balsa came from Balsa Cabin ( I live fairly close to them). Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble. I really enjoyed the build and when I had finished I wanted to start another! Most people modify them for wing bolt fixing but I kept to good old fashioned wing bands. Enjoy the build, All the best, Chris, ( deepest rural Essex).

I purchased a 4*40 from a swap meet 3 years ago and found that it had forward sweep on the wings. It flies well and the sweep appears to cause no problems. I should just ignore and continue with the build. Chris. UK.

JimO. Short kit from www.lazer-works.com (Look under RCM). If you want to scratch (as I did ) then plenty of free plans available. I would suggest that you look on the scratch building forum at "Jensen Ugly stik build" where you will find lots of information. Easy to build and great to fly. Mine flies much better than an artf stik that I previously owned. All the best, Chris UK.

RE: Need help with 4 star twin conversion
William, Cg the same and downthrust the same. My twin mods are to an already completed airframe which has the well documented wing clip mod. The centre of my nacelles are each 8" from the fuselage centre line. If I was carrying out this work on a full span wing I would put the nacelles slightly further out which would put them between two of the existing ribs. I cannot say which ones as I don't have a plan or an uncovered wing to look at! You will have an advantage as you will be starting from scratch on an unbuilt kit. One very important point is the areas of the tailplane and fin will need to be increased ( They are often increased anyway ) to give extra stability in case of an engine out situation. There are several ideas on engine sidethrust for a twin ( perhaps somebody else will chip in about this). The twinstar nacelles that I used both have out thrust built in. The rh nacelle has right thrust and the lh has left thrust. Please note that my model is not completed and has never flown but it will be maidened like this when/if I complete it. Too many projects and too little time! All the best......Chris UK.

RE: Need help with 4 star twin conversion
William, I posted some pictures for you on the thread you started in the kit build section. I have used Hobbico Twin star nacelles and nose cone. The wing is not the best for fitting nacelles to. I put in strengthening in several places. I would not recommend retracts for a first twin. You will need to make considerable changes to the 4* wing construction to both fit them and for safety reasons. The prop clearance is minimal also (9" prop maximum). As for incidences etc...Keep them the same as standard. C.g as standard also. You may want to give each motor some out thrust. I would give the same down thrust as the standard kit. It would probably be better to go for something like a Hobbico Twin Star as your first twin and later on scratch or modify the 4*. All the best........Chris UK.

RE: NEED HELP FOR TWIN CONVERSION
William, I started one of these but have not completed it. I have used the nacelles and nose cone (inverted ) from a Hobbico twin star. You need to put strength back into the wing. I was intending to put a piper style tail and fin on it. There is not much ground clearance for props i.e 9" maximum. If I was starting a new build I would make it a trike u/c. Also mine would be electric. I am not sure of the wing strength for i/c motors. I hope the pics might be a help to you. Chris UK.

RE: Ugly Stick Build
Nergall, glad that the maiden went well. You could do a check to make sure that the cg is not too far back. I use 30% expo on my controls (JR radio). I also have a small amount of aileron differential. I found that I had to increase the aileron travel and decrease the elevator travel to get the controls balanced to my satisfaction. Went to the flying field this morning and came home again....too

RE: Class II pattern planes
Ray...I reckon that the plan was well worn by the time that you had all finished with it! The notes on the plan say that if you set up Zero Zero incidences then the 2 perfection loses some of its "sparkle", I wonder why? The other thing that I notice is that many of the earlier trike u/c planes sat nose down on the ground. One in particular that I had used to race across the ground like a Ferrari on steroids and only took off when you closed the throttle! A larger nosewheel soon fixed it. Incidentally did you see any of the NW 200 races? Chris.

RE: Class II pattern planes
Just looking at the plans for the 11 perfection and noticed that the main wheels seem a long way back fron the cg. If flying from a grass strip would it pay to move them forward? I always set the mainwheels so the the plane will sit just tail down with an empty tank. I expect that things will be ok as shown if flying from a hard surface? Any thoughts? Chris. UK.

RE: Chris Foss Acrowot - Help and Advice
1. Is the wing section symmetrical? If so you may have a twisted wing panel. 2. If the wing section is semi-symmetrical you may have two wings from the same side. i.e. Two right wings or two left wings. 3. Is there washout built into the panels? If so it might be best to not join them with the wings tips parallel to the surface. I would suggest that you contact Chris Foss direct and show him these pictures. I am sure he will be helpful. Nergall..Great looking Stik. I set up flaperon on mine but have never used them! We only have a short strip in the middle of crops but the Stik drops in every time with no problems. Regarding c of g, mine is on the rear of the main spar ( 3 5/8" from the wing le) and I would not put it any further forwards. You might find that you want it further back as you get used to it. All the best for the maiden. My stik is the model that always comes with me...it is just so predictable and great fun to fly. Chris UK.

Duane..No offence taken. I will try to write more clearly in the future. In the UK, as well as the Intruder 2, we can get the falcon 56 and the graupner Kwik Fly 3 in artf form. There are also one or two other retro look models. If these start to sell well one of the manufacturers could flood the market with copies of just about anything. Would this be a good or bad thing? Incidentally how good is the Graupner Kwik fly 3? The advertising says it is an accurate copy...True or false? Chris UK.

Duane...The term "well almost" meant that the WM intruder was almost but not quite! ( if you get my drift). Also note that I am building a Super Kaos from RCM plans, and I think that it is considered a classic. I would like to recreate some of my old models but unfortunately I no longer have any carrier wave vacuum tube equipment. Some progress is necessary! Chris UK.

Classic pattern ARTF's...Thay are already here ( well almost ). Have a look at The World Models Intruder 90. Not sure where you get them from in the States but here in the UK they are available from Steve Webb models. The model is a '70's look alike aerobatic model. It is reviewed in the June 2009 RCME and looks quite good apart from the cowl which looks a bit of an add on . I wonder how many it will sell? Chris UK. (slowly scratching a super Kaos)

Ken, there is an old saying that goes something like "If you're born with balsa cement in you veins then you'll die with balsa cement in your veins" i.e. once a modeller always a modeller. I too was getting very jaded but the thread on the Jensen Ugly stik in the scratch forum re-kindled my interest. It took me 5 months to build it and I really enjoyed it. I have just got the plan for the Super Kaos and intend to build it next winter. So just enjoy it and I hope that you grandchildren enjoy it also. You're never too old! ( or so I'm told !)
