RE: starter motor problem
They also make a pink silicone cone that has a shorter flatter cone hole in it. I fly with a guy who uses them all the time on the heavy hubs. They seem to work better than the grey ones for him. I haven't found anything yet that works perfect. I assume you are using the grey rubber cone now. I don't know who makes them but your local hobby place should have them. Good luck Ron

RE: Dwell question
kiv, your calculations sound about right. yes you will probably need more magnets to get enough dwell on the jeh ignition. If you followed his instructions on figuring dwell you should be fine. Remember though dwell and advance are two completly different things. Dwell determines how much charge the coil gets. Advance is when the coil fires to the plug. Good luck Ron

RE: Quadra 35 experts---many questions.
I have two Quadra 35s. I have literally flown the tread off the wheels on one plane I had one on, many many many flights. Good engines, I use Amsoil 1-100 like the bottle says. Never any problems. Only thing I have done to either one is rebuild carb once in a while. Oh ya and I replaced the ignition coil on one, it was origionally a points ignition and when I wore out that coil I replaced it with the newer electronic ignition coil with no points. Basically I feed them fuel and fly. One is on a 70 inch biplane (an enlarged Hog Biplane) The other until recently was on a 91 inch roadrunner. I run a 18/6-10 prop on the biplane and was running either a 18/8 two blade or 16/10 three blade on the other. If you decide you don't like it just send it to me I'll gladly find a home for it. I think you will like it. Have fun Ron

RE: gas fuel with glo plug no ignition
Actually years ago they made add on water injector systems for cars. It was supposed to give you more power and cooler running engine. I never bought one so I don't really know how well it worked. The information as I recall talked about a very fine mist injected in the carb throat. I have been thinking about when I get some time trying to build a system to try on a conversion engine. I think it might be interesting or it could turn out to be more work than it's worth, I don't know. Just my 2 cents worth of opinion. Ron

old gas
Your problem is easy to solve. Do like I did and teach your wife to fly also. This way both of you fly each weekend and you can easily go through a gallon every couple weekends. I never have gas go bad. Just my 5 cents worth. Ron

airbags
Hi, Be careful with those bags. I have heard that the chemical used to burn and inflate them leaves a nasty powder behind that is bad for you. Irratates skin, nose, lungs etc. I do not have any personal experience with them, just what I have heard and read. Before I would use them I would do a search here and on the net. A cheap repair patch isn't worth a health risk in my opinion. That's just my 2 cents worth and worth everything you paid for it.

Ryobi as a pusher canard ??
Bruce, Sounds good to me. I am in the process of building a swept flying wing pusher, I plan to either put a Homey 25 or a Ryobi 31 on the back of it, depending on how big I go. I would suggest going to electronic ignition to get rid of all the weight you can since the engine is probably going to be behind the CG a ways. That's what I am going to do anyway. Good luck keep me posted how your doing, I'm interested in unusual projects. Ron

Small Gas Engines
Just jump over to the Engine Conversions sub forum and you will will find a lot of us converting weed eaters and chainsaw engines. And I might add having a good time doing it. I am working on a 40% Rose Parakeet (90 inch wing span biplane) that I am putting a roper 3.7 cu inch chainsaw conversion in. I have converted several weedeaters, all still have the stock ignition on them, and they all fly well. You just have to pick the plane and the engine for what you want to do, same as if you are going out to buy any new plane and engine. In the engine conversions sub forum there are many guys with a lot of experience converting engines to help. Yes I agree you're not going to be doing 3D stuff with most conversions but hey use the money you saved on the conversion engine for the non 3D plane on buying the latest and greatest 3D power plant you need for that 3D plane. Come join us where conversion is not a dirty word. Just my opinion, and it's worth every penny you paid for it.

Giant starters
I use a big starter on big engine for two reasons. 1. to me it's easier. 2. I like having all ten fingers, hands and wrists in pain free working condition. I have in the past hand proped them but since I built the starter it is just too easy to hookup the battery and zip it's running. Ron

Giant starters
Jackumac, Sorry no photo of the starter, never thought anyone would want to see it. I would bet the accord and civic starters have very little differences between them. I used an old set of jumper cables for the leads. Will try to get a photo taken and post as soon as I can. Work seems to be interupting sport and play time a little too much lately. Ron

another newbie, help please!
John, Never did have any trouble with the points making noise for the radio. Just do like they all say and keep the ignition stuff in front of the firewall including the kill switch and the radio stuff behind the firewall preferably around 12 inches away if possible, but then come to think of it I have my receiver battery closer to the firewall than that with no trouble. I never needed to use a sheilded plug wire or boot either. Just make sure you do a good range check before flying both engine off and engine running and at different speeds. Also use plastic push rod for throttle, not wire. Now get out there and disturb some neighbors with noise. Ron

another newbie, help please!
You have a good engine there. I have one on a old 91" Roadrunner that has flown several flights almost every weekend year round for over 5 years. It has to have over 650 flights on it. I have rebuilt the carb once or twice and had to replace the coil, we flew it so much the coil came loose from the core and everytime the flywheel would come around with the magnets the coil would slide up the core to the flywheel. It started as a points engine and was easy starting, but when I replaced the coil the points version was no available. Now it starts with a starter, but is still a very good engine. These old engine never seem to die. Have fun and keep the fingers and other body parts out of the prop. Ron

How Much Aileron Travel?
Thanks for the imput Stick Jammer. I measured what 20 degrees would be in deflection last night and that will give 3 inches from full up to full down. That sure looks like a lot! But that's why I put in this post to see what others thought. Thanks

How Much Aileron Travel?
I need some help. I am building a 40% Rose Parakeet Biplane. It has 90 inch wing span, projected to weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. Ailerons on the bottom wing only, they have a cord of 4.25 inches and span of 31 inches each on a wing with a cord of 14 inches and 90 inch span. I am trying to hide the servos and linkage inside the wing, this limits the amount of travel I can get. How much travel do you think I need to be adequate? I am putting a 3.7cu in chainsaw engine on the front. This plane will not be doing 3D stuff would like it to be able to do some aerobatics. How much travel on the ailerons do I need? Thanks for the help guys. Ron

Scratch Built Ignition???
Ok, I understand how this works. With the dwell time being determined by the time the magnet is under the sensor, my question now is what problems does this create for us using it on our conversions? Is there a better way that doesn't cost signifigantly more. I ask because I don't know much about this stuff yet and want to know all I can. Thanks

ignition kit
I also have ordered the TIM-6 ignition parts. Looks like to me we will need to turn a small hub to go on the crankshaft to hold the magnet to pass by the pickup. From his information I read on the site I will need to do some calculations to get the right diameter hub for the correct dwell time. I also ordered the back issues of the IC magazine he talks about to see if there is any good info in them. Will post when I know something new.

I like the gravity feed method. No fuss no muss and if gravity quits working, we got lot bigger problems than how to fuel a plane. That's my .02 cents worth.
