a little confused
I just had to change the motors out in my GWS f-15 and decided to upgrade them from the stock 3600kv in runners to some 5000kv out runners. I'm guessing the speed controllers that came with the plane are the stock GWS 10-15a each. The battery I flew with today is a turnigy 2600mah 3s 20-30C. With the new motors in the plane it flew for about 3mins versus the usual 4 and the battery swelled up preety fat! This is because of the new motors drawing too much amps? Why would the new motors cause the battery to suddenly swell? Can someone explain the ratios of C ratings from battery all the way through esc to motors for me?

RE: Kyosho Jet Illusion EDF Review
Yeah just not ready to sink the money back into the plane when I can get the great planes evader for seventy bucks more. Also, spoke to great planes personally yesterday about their motor warranties. They warrant their motors free of defect for TWO YEARS. This is better than Kyosho's one year, which doesn't apply to most cases anyhow... I'm thinking the extra money might really be worth it in the long run. Downside to that is I have to invest in 4cell lipos... Will this ever end? Another line of fiberglass/balsa constructed jets on this smaller size would really do well in the EDF market right now. Its a shame the manufactures don't spend more time researching their own markets, or spend time on the forums....I might just have to create a line myself....

RE: Need help from the EDF jet Specialists
WOW! Now i'm really nervous for you! Scratch built from plans nice! I've scratch built a few prop planes but never an edf. My f-15 is very light because its foam... I will measure the weight to power ratio for you. Also, because its foam and very light it flies pretty slow which in turn requires more control throws... If yours is heavier, which it is, that means in order to maintain lift it will have to fly faster, which will mean decreased throw rates on the control serfices. What do the plans say as far as control throws go? I'm guessing nothing, which is why you posted this... Hhmm this is a problem indeed. What was the original power supply for the plan on the planes? Was it prop driven? jon r. (its virutally impossible to get an accurate measurement on thrust but here it goes.) my gws f-15 weight 1055 grams thrust 750 grams

RE: Kyosho Jet Illusion EDF Review
Now that my kyosho illusion is grounded, i took out my other two foamies yesterday and crashed both of them back to back during hand launching. The wind was gusty and I was launching them myself, no helpers... They both barely bumped across the ground but it was enough the break both of them in half. Flying foam is so depressing....! What other fiberglass performance models are you finding? Anything good? I'm about to drop 100.00 or more into a new edf system for the illusion so I'm wondering if I would be better off just getting a new plane!

Was this a kit you built? Or did you get plans and scratch build it? Yickes I'm nervous for you too! It looks like its made of balsa. What's the power to weight ratio? How much does it weight? Lots of questions I know but you have my interest.

RE: Kyosho Jet Illusion EDF Review
Personally, I can't stand flying foam. It's not durable enough, its not as nice looking, and I hate how it squeaks in the car on the way to the field. I wish more manufacturers would catch on and start offering more higher performance models in fiberglass and balsa. The kyosho illusion jet is an amazing fun thing to fly but I have a very bad taste in my mouth after their motor crapping out on me after only the 11th flight... I did get some info from Kyosho today as far as the motor is concerned... the stock motor with fan pushes out 270g of thrust which is almost what the weight of the plane: This is how the thing is able to go so fast. The motor is 20mm in diameter. In order for me to remove the edf assembly inside the fuselage I had to break it. Good luck getting it out without any damage to the fuselage or edf fan assembly... I will be changing this in my modifications/installation on the new edf unit. Talked to Morris today at DuctedFans.com and he says that a few guys have also had the same problems with their kyosho units and have upgraded to a 50mm fan with a 'mighty might' motor from Hoffman. He says that the guys who have installed these have had to slit the fuselage open to get the unit in but that it flies faster than the stock system. Let's hope the hoffman motor doesn't burn out on me either... Here's a few photos of the current condition on my illusion.

RE: Kyosho Jet Illusion EDF Review
Called Kyosho today to see if the motor was under warranty. Which it wasn't on the stipulation that the unit was purchased overseas so therefore, isn't covered under their american warranty. Pretty shitty business if you ask me. Any-who the cost of the motor unit would be 101.00 plus shipping. (I bought the whole plane with motor for 86.00 or so.) So hearing this figure after the fact that they wouldn't cover it under their warranty just made me roll my eyes... So to top it all off I asked if I bought the new motor from them if it would be under their warranty. They responded "no." So now we are opting to put a cheap chinese motor like something from hobbyking into the plane. Any suggestions on which motor might work out? Keep in mind I fly this plane like a torpedo or rocket ship. I stay full throttle until its time to land. I like the speed!! I'm scared an even cheaper hobbyking motor might burn out after the second flight instead of the twelfth!

I have a foam GWS f-15 that measures 35'' wingspan. I have tailerons on the feathers of this one too. Right now they are set to up and down @1.5'' and left and right @ 1.0." For this plane its right in the sweet spot. This plane really performs and hadels well and was my beginner edf. It's foam, which I hate flying... Tell us about your project, what motors did you put in it? Did you start a build thread?

Think your going to make yourself a big mess. You won't be able to release enough powder into the "exhaust" to make the smoke thick enough. If you did manage to do so the effect would only last for a minute tops...

Looks like I might have opened my mouth up too early. I was out flying what would have been my twelth flight on the illusion when about 45 seconds into it the motor shuts off. I land safetly and the speed controller is beeping four counts. Not sure if it's the motor or the esc. The motor doesn't seem to move too freely as it once did before. I'm wondering if the motor has burned out...

Kyosho Jet Illusion EDF Review
This is my recent review of the Kyosho Jet Illusion. This model is great value for the price. I purchased mine off of ebay from a seller called jettechmodels.com for 106.00 shipped. However, the unit was not mailed when it was supposed to and took over a month for it to arrive after being lied too several time from jettechnodels.com So I would look to purchase elsewhere. The model is not for the beginner. Do not buy this as your first EDF as you will bury it into the ground in a few seconds. The quality of the kit was very good and comparable to something like great planes or hanger 9. However, the instructions were strictly illustrations. Take your time and review the instructions carefully as there is not much text written on them anywhere. Everything lined up ok and the quality of the hardware and party was pretty good. However small things like having to drill holes in the fuselage for airflow, drilling holes in elevators etc. were annoying as most american made models have everything ready to go. At last, the model was built and ready to balance. I found the plane very nose heavy with the supplied CG location. I did make some modification from the stock instructions. Mods included velcroing the battery directly to the bottom of the fuselage instead of on the supplied tray and using only one screw on the front of the canopy to attach it to the fuselage. This allowed me to swing the canopy to the side to allow access to the battery compartment. I did increase the recommended throws by 1mm each. Be sure to give lots of throw with the hand launch as it will need it. It does get up to speed fairly quickly but you do need to allow it to gain speed before inputting elevator. Once trimmed she flies beautiful as full throttle. At half throttle the nose wants to drop down and she's a little whoobly, so I prefer just flying her wide open all the time. That's the fun part of flying a jet is the speed right? Landings aren't as bad as I anticipated. She will slow down some, for a jet at least its slow... Make a good wide approach at half throttle with about 25ft altitude. Line her up over the run way then kill the power once over the runway. Apply just enough up to keep her about three ft off the ground where you just hold her there until she sinks into the ground. If you stall her out higher than 3ft one wingtip will lower and she will cartwheel. Did that my second flight! No damage the fuselage so far hasn't even a scratch on it. She will scream at full throttle and does like to sink into the turns. Applying up as soon as I give her a right or left input help maintain the altitude in the turns. Overall the build is a big cumbersome but the performance for the price is unmatched so far from anything else I've seen. She's not much smaller than the evader and used much less power. I have the specs for mine below hit me up if you have questions! jon r. RE: GWS 15 Vs Great planes l-39
I have a gws f-15 that was graciously handed down to me. I love this plane. I do plan on handing it down to someone else once I decide on a fiberglass edf. The f-15 is such a fantastic first edf because it can fly fast and it can fly very very very slow. You can literally glide this thing down without any throttle and if it's not too windy it will just plop down slowly to the grass. This is not the case with other edfs so you don't have the fast, throttled landings as with other heavier edfs so this is a great first edf. The instructions are a little hard to follow but the plane and materials (foam) are pretty good. I love mine!

HobbyKing t-38 modifications HELP
Hello all EDF fliers out there! Here's my problem and I need your advice and help! I bought a t-38 talon from hobbyking.com and after the fourth flight the motor has crapped out and I am now modifying the plane a little earlier than I originally planned to do so. The plane flew pretty good but only was able to get short flights of about 3minutes on a 2200mah 15C lipo. I since have upgraded to a 2600mah 30C for more performance. The speed controlcomponentsler also got very very hot. Hot to the point where it would burn you if you were to touch it and after the fourth flight the motor burned up too. At this time I was running the 2200mah 15c lipo so I don't think It was me burning those components up with the battery; rather, i think they are cheap chinese knockoff parts... I want to get everyone's input on what power system I should put in it. The stock fan unit is a 64mm. Should I get something from hobbyking like the http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6632 or thehttp://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4498. Or, should I stray away from the hobbyking parts and get the great planes huperflow unit? The hyperflow unit is a 56mm fan and the talon stock fan is 64mm so I'm not sue what to do here. Ideally I would love to get this thing to really open up and scream. I would love to get this plane 80mph or faster so I'm open to looking at other power systems to achieve this. So here's a recap: 64mm stock fan unit to be replaced speed controller to be replaced (have a new 25-30C 40A hobbyking esc) batteries 2200mah 15C or 2600mah 30C lipo Let me know your thoughts!!! jon r.
