Good to hear you got it finished, well done. I must get some more done on mine ... too many projects on the go. No pics in the air, but how about some on the ground?

RE: Mega earthquake in Japan
ORIGINAL: abufletcher I guess it's just human nature. But I'd be fine if the mods want to 86 this thread.
Good to hear you're OK. I was thinking about you while watching this on TV last night (NZ time), google maps showed you to be some distance away, but you never know. Having been through a couple of big quakes myself over the last few months, I could fully imagine what it was like over there, but to have a tsunami on top of it is just terrible. My thoughts are with those poor people over there. I guess this thread was started here as it's the place where abu is most known and where we'd most likely hear he was OK or otherwise. We may all be here for the models, but they're insignificant in the face of major events like this when peoples lives come first, and the concern that they're OK. I think the thread should be left here for a bit for others in the community to see as they come along. Give it a few days before moving it along if that's what people want.

RE: Pen for use on balsa
ORIGINAL: BMatthews What grade of lead are you two using? I use HG pencils on regular wood all the time but not on balsa. The HB pencils dig furrows suitable for planting and still barely leaves a noticable mark of grey.
I use .5mm and .9mm pencils with 2B leads. From lightest to darkest the leads go 4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B. The leads also get softer as they get darker so you don't need to push so hard. 2B is the darkest/softest I've found, but there may be others out there.

RE: What is the largest aircraft to have been flown first person ?
There were RC B17's used in WW2. They were aircraft that were past their use by date and were packed with explosives and flown by RC from another B17 into an enemy ground target. The RC aircraft took off with a pilot on board and flying the aircraft, when the aircraft had reached a designated point over England the on board pilot made the explosives live, handed control over to the chase B17 and then bailed out. They weren't that successful and so the project was short lived. One of the B17's blew up with the pilot the pilot still on board. There's also well known video footage (that I can't be bothered looking for) of a fullsize RC Boeing 707 being deliberately crashed to test a fire retardant additive that had been added to it's fuel to prevent fire in the event of real crashes - it blew up and burned quite nicely [:D]

So, I'm looking forward to getting on to the DR1 then the Spacewalker after I finish the 35% plan built Pitts that's on the bench now. But anyway, I like your work, well done.

RE: Fuel Pump Ideas???
ORIGINAL: STUKA BARRY I can appreciate the healthier living using a hand pump, but with my warbirds averaging 32oz. per tank, I'd spend all day fueling. My Holley at 7-10psi will fill the average tank in 30 seconds. The Dave Brown six shooter pumps 6/10ths an oz per revolution, you do the math.
32oz @ .6 oz/rev = 53.33 revolutions. Assuming you crank at 1.5 rev/sec = 35.56 secs to fill a 32 oz tank, thereby saving you 5.56 seconds per fill. Assuming 5 flights per outing and 40 outings per year that's 200 flights/tank fills per year and therefore 18.53 minutes saved over the course of the year. The [link=http://www.sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/MainMenuFV4.html?E+Sig]SIG Gas Passer[/link] is listed at $32.99. This divided by the 18.53 minutes of time it saved you over the year = $1.78 per minute of time saved it's cost you over the year. You did ask, and I was bored [:D]

RE: Hostetler Pitts 35%
5/16" aileron movement? Where did you get that from? I've just double checked my plans and I don't have any recommended control throws for any of the surfaces on there. For the 1st flight I'd be setting up large control surface movements and using a good amount of exponential (say 70-80%) so the the surfaces aren't too touchy around neutral but you've still full control throws at the extremes if you need it. That way if things get messy you won't be wasting time looking for a dual rate switch but will have the best of both worlds already at your finger tips - mild and wild. Having said that I'd also use the dual rate switch with less expo to make the plane a bit more touchy around neutral if needed. Once that 1st flight's done and the pucker factor has settled down you'll have a better idea of where you want to go. Mmmm, sorry if that was a bit long winded [8|] Your engine looks like a good choice. Have you got any pics of progress so far?

RE: Glue Allergy?????
Yes, it's possible to develop an allergy over a period of time. A ex neighbour of mine used to work for a company making fibre glass moldings for cars - spoilers etc. After a couple of years of doing this he found he'd become allergic to the resin and had to chuck the job in. This was a number of years ago and I don't recall what his symptoms were now. I remember that it was polyester resin he was working with though, and not epoxy resin. I've heard stories of people becoming allergic to CA fumes over time also. So I would err on the side of caution and assume that epoxy can cause the same problems.

RE: What's the approach to charging?
I didn't do the poll as my option isn't there. I use a [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMAJ0&P=ML]Triton 2[/link] charger and a 12v supply in my workshop to cycle my batteries and finally charge them over 90 minutes or so. This charger also comes to the field with me just in case and I use it with [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGS7&P=M]this[/link] balancer for charger LiPo's for my electric plane.

RE: What type of Rx batteries do you use?
4.8v 2700 mAh NiMH for me and I use a battery checker before every flight. The checker has 3 green LEDs, 4 yellow and 3 red - I only fly if it's in the green. The reason I use NiMH and not NiCad is the that the NiMH has a higher capacity and a greater tolerance to being repeatedly charged when not fully flat, although I still cycle them from time to time to keep them nice and healthy. I bought a cheap battery pack when I was learning to fly and had it die on me in flight. The plane, being a trainer, flew a nice stable circuit right over the pits before crashing right on the runway. It wasn't a nice feeling watching it fly over the people in the pits or a particularly expensive car that was parked there at the time. Just after the crash a couple of the others said they'd bought the same packs cheap and had issues with them dying on them too, it would've been nice to have heard that earlier. These were packs on special from a reputable model shop. This incident taught me not to cut corners with model aircraft and try and save a couple of dollars on items as it can end up costing a lot more in the long run. Since then I've bought the best cells I can and made up my own packs and sign of anything being a bit suspect and they get binned.
