RE: MIG-29/MIG-29UB, 2100, Tetris, Bukvorez
My initial reaction was to just laugh at that insane collection of parts ! But as I finally decided there is no way I could glue that puzzle together correctly, I couldn't wait to see it done. Pretty amazing, its almost magic how it comes together , very cool.

RE: pull start for airplanes?
I once saw a Nosen P51 with a spring loaded recoil starter ! I believe it was a converted saw engine possibly . The starter was on the back of the motor and back about 9-10 inches from the prop. It was something else to see the guys hand on the back of the cowl, pull starting that thing. He wasn't having much luck that day, I remember thinking if you pulled that handle and the rope caught like they sometimes do, you might break the plane with you other hand.

RE: Four Star 60 building. By a 54 year old beginner.
I would say sand more! the definitely tighten up more after covering, I would hate to see you get it to the point the wing won't go in without damaging something.

RE: Re-kit, no re-build
I think you did a pretty good job of spreading the damage ! That poor motor ! wow ! I am surprised how bad the motor is after seeing the cowl first... Well hopefully it gives you more room in the shop , than nightmares in your sleep ;) I have been breaking a couple this spring, but so far its been fixable...

RE: GP Super Stearman
Well YEARS ago I had a dead stick with my Stearman, and I casually landed it next to the huge drainage ditch/levy next to our field . Except it tumbled int the ditch instead, proving my depth perception isn't the best ! I quickly fixed the surprising few areas of damage right away. But then it sat and sat on the rack in the basement. Last fall I tried to get it running again and it turned out the diaphragm had gone dry. Once replaced it was running again.. although it does trip abit going from low to high throttle. The airplane has a converted Poulan 46 and it runs hard ! I took it out to the field last night and put a few flights on it.. If anything the worst problem is getting it to land the idle is still a tad high. I did have one dead stick landing but it was the easiest of the bunch and right down the center of the runway. Anyhow, one of the Ole Super Stearmans made it out o the filed yesterday !

RE: New Updates! 1:1 scale Sopwith Pup and Fokker Triplane builds
great pics as always... Wish old planes like these just flew over on occasion for no reason. I live relatively close to an airport, and we see some WW2 stuff now and then.. But I would like to see a WW1 plane come out of the blue.. just sailing by..

RE: 1/4 scale Fokker DR-1 CG
An oversized motor is nice on these planes, not so much for the crazy horsepower, but the DRAG on a tripe, and many big biplanes is huge. In a solid wind the drag increases to the point a marginal motor could get you in trouble.

RE: Striking Back airshow...
There are some nice objects left over at the Ankeny Airport.. down near the south end of the public area of the airport is the museum, Its actually a hangar with some full scale restoration going on in the back, and some of the Byron goodies up front. I am not sure they have a set schedule, but you might try stopping there if you are driving by. There is no entry fee, but they do take donations, its an interesting mix of Aviation squeezed TIGHTLY into a hangar... i think the have the B29, b17, the 1/4 scale sherman tanks (all steel) , and some of the smaller steel ships and train stuff...

Such a awesome plane. I would love to build the new Albie that Balsa USA has coming out. I sorta wish it was 1/4 scale instead of 1/3. hopefully they will offer it in 1/4 sometime.

RE: What happens if arf and kit building prices meet?
Les, I think maybe you misunderstood the post? We agree the the kit build is actually more expensive to do yourself, I was just watching the ARF prices inflate to the cost of building ..and wondering as the wood built arfs become very expensive.. will people continue to buy them.. or will ARF sales slow, drop off, and possibly start disappearing, like the kit manufacturers did. I would not be surprised in 5 years if the arf companies are almost exclusively foam built planes.. I just wish the arf manufacturers sold kits as well !

What happens if arf and kit building prices meet?
I always wonder what will happen when arf prices eventually climb up to the same level as building yourself ? It will probably happen. There were some good deals over the years before the climbing prices started in. My planes are a mix of arf, kit,and plan built planes ... there is a lot to say about each type.. In the beginning the arfs were nearly free when you factored in the time someone had spent on them, but as wages and shipping overseas bring the cost of wooden built arfs up I wonder if that segment of the hobby will slow down. I am just addicted to the planes and will mess with them if I am too blind to fly. [;)] I wonder if the higher cost will slow down new people from entering the hobby? I suppose the new foam planes will always be available at decent entry levels. But I can see the wood built up arfs possibly pricing themselves out of the market for many people... I doubt there will be a huge increase in kit building no matter what .. There will always be someone that wants to fix old cars, restore old boats, and build kit planes... Time will tell for sure.

RE: Which Balsa USA 1/4 plane?
I have seen all but the N 11 fly, and I think you will have a sweet flying plane no matter which you choose, therefor I suggest you pick the one you like the looks of the most. I do think there are less of the N 11's around, and it is smaller than the other two I believe. So if room is a consideration you might prefer it over the others.

Get to that point where you are leading the plane and not saving it :) then start nailing those touch and goes.. ;) you will be the Zen master in no time ... Oh yeah, you will get that high every time you test fly a new one, whew.. sometimes its even a white knuckler.. hahahahah oh yeah, and have fun !

RE: Making Parts From Kit Instructions?
Some parts can be made if you know the height and width.. Many times if you can get close, you can put the part in place and figure out the arcs of a piece by using a flexible balsa stickand sighting along it to get a flowing even line, heck you might make the plane look BETTER than the kit. Build the wings and tail right, get the cg right, and you can almost do anything in between those parts as far as looks go. Heck the fuse is mainly an alignment jig ;) Thats my opinion anyhow ! I am ready for any disagreements ! I might not answer them for a week though, I'll be gone ;)
