RE: Play nice while I'm away, m'kay?
I thought if you zoomed in with that special system they use on the CSI shows ...you can see that the space shuttle and tanks are actually covered with cox black widows? not the rumored ceramic tiles. I used to have one of those ceramic tiles. It produced no thrust or lift sitting on my work bench or mounted on an airplane..Different nitro percentages in the fuels had no effect. other than making the tile slippery.

RE: four * 40 kitbash group build this winter?
I measured my fourstar and the fuse is just shy of 3.5 inches wide..so we will have to keep that in mind when selecting a cowl or canopy, I did some browsing on tower tonight just to see whats out there. having bashed a few kits I will tell you, its MUCH easier making the fuse taller by adding detail top and bottom of the fuse. when you start adding width it gets tricky, because if you have to widen the wing saddle it adds TONS of work to do it nicely. If you make it wide at the front and taper down before you get to the wing its not such a big deal. Once we decide if we are going to fudge the looks of an existing plane. Or come up with a mixture of things we will be on the way. I have never built a high wing or parasol type fourstar. I do however have a few ww2 versions under the belt, and a vintage era racing plane or open cockpit is a real possibilty. If we do decide on a cowl that will of course add work and money. It also means that mounting the cowl will very a little depending on motor size. Usually I build the wing pretty close to plans, to keep the gentle performance. Change of ailerons is easy, wingtips not problem..even dropping a bay from a wing is simple. I don't have a wing kit handy so I will concentrate more on the fuse. I am not sure where my finished fuse will go? possibly a friend , I am more into building it right now than worrying about the details ! [:D] I have also built the gear into the wings of a couple fourstars so I could give tips on that ...fixed gear that is, I am no retract expert!

I did actually see one snap a wing off at about 100 foot once..it ended ugly! This guy used to just torture that plane. He would break it and reglue on his tailgate and go right back up. One day a guy says to him, "didn't you just use epoxy on that? " His plane is out flying stunts over the field..... He smiles and says "yeah" ..."It should be cured in about 2 minutes!"

I wanted to bump this to the top to see if there is any interest in it this year ? there were a couple guys interested last year..and I thought if we could get a few people interested it might be fun. It wouldn't have to be built overnight as a race. We could take our time and discuss what we want to do... shop for ideas and maybe share templates so it made for a fun project. Anyhow if it sounds good or you have suggestions nows the time !

RE: Fiberglass cowl build advice needed
If you could lay up your cowl on the airplane if it didn't stick to the fuse...you could wrap the fuse with wax paper and tape it down with good tape (3m/scotch) Then build up the glass over that. Either way, good luck to you. I love hearing about people doing it the hard way..it doesn't make me feel so crazy for doing things that way myself [:D]

Maybe a high voltage portable drill pack? like a 19.2 volt one... I still can't believe the way that thing comes up, not forward at the first launch. I didn't realize the electric motor was already running when it launched. It just seems wrong the way it comes up.. Thanks for the link !

RE: Supplies dwindling.....
PMW isn't the Elmers version of gorilla glue called ELMERS ULTIMATE? I also see they have a new NANO glue that is similar, I tried it and it didn't seem any different than the ultimate to me. I believe the gorilla swells more, but its much more expensive. What ever any of you try of this type of glue do some experimenting first on scraps. It isn't pretty but it has its uses. I had a buddy that just dumped a BUNCH in a project and it TOOK OVER THE PLANE !! ahahahah I think he actually was mad and blamed me ! [:D] Its a good glue to learn about before you dump a pint of it out ! I actually babysit it as it expands.

RE: I can fly, now I want to build...
I admit its been years since i built an ultrasport, But I don't recall them being so difficult? I have quite a bit of building time before that though so I might not have noticed at the time. The four star is quite straight forward with great instructions as noted. If he can find a midstar somewhere that might be a good kit, I have built one of them ,and most people think they actually fly better than the four star. My first rc kit was a sig seniorita after building TONS of stick and tissue stuff. So I may not have realized the learning curve of going from arfs, to an ultrasport, I sure wish there was a huge shop around here where guys could get together and build all winter long.

hobbycity mirage 4000 flown !
Well, This was my first EDF, it went together simple and quick. I did have an issue with the supplied epoxy..I didn't think it setup as good as it should have.. I have mixed my share of epoxy, this just seemed different. Anyhow it setup and was ok. It just had me worried for awhile. The only real problem I had was a lock key on the motor shaft was broken [:o] I was able to get a new 25 cent piece from the hardware store. The initial flight used a 2350 4 cell lipo 25c, and I was a bit nose heavy..being overly safe turned into a problem as I had some cheap receiver in the plane and combined with the balance issue I nearly lost it..I got it back on the ground, rebalanced, and set my reflex on the elevons a little higher..BINGO I now have 5 issue free flights .. I adjusted the servo travel on the retracts to keep it from folding on taxi. Its not super fast, but on a gray day it still doesn't take long to get out of visual with the light color scheme. I have only been flying two short flights of around 3 minutes each charge so far. I want to get a feel for the plane and the length I can stretch the battery run time before I accidently have to deadstick it. It behaves well on landing approach, I am still unused to the long flat warmish glide though. http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10014&Product_Name=Mirage_4000_Fighter_w/_Brushless_EDF_&_Retracts_Plug-n-Fly

A pup isn't usually an airplane that would really test a servo's limits..but if you are using a micro servo, (about the size of a stamp from the side) that is a little scary (to me anyhow) [:D] I use micros on my flat foamie electrics, and one of them I upgraded to a mini for more umph.. Have fun, try not to lose any planes on poor hardware ! It stinks to crash because of the little stuff.

RE: How to handle a difficult pilot!
Here is a whole new spin to consider. I am not sure if it has been brought up yet as this thread is tough to keep up on.. What if a non member that ALLEGEDLY has an AMA card crashes a gas plane into someone, or their new car? Causing SERIOUS damage or death? If he doesn't really have a card...I doubt that the AMA will retroactively enroll him. If he DOES have a card are there rules the AMA requires being ignored enough to void the insurance? I guess I really don't know how many guidelines are required. Actually I am shocked the AMA rules even allow a setup like this ... Not trying to rile anyone, I am just curious , the devil is always in the details.

try building that 1/6th piper cub [;)] Man , I have built LOTS of kits..but that thing is a BUILD! However that being said it builds LIGHT. I was told by someone that it is a kit designed in the 50's and I believe it. Back when I was in a building frenzy I actually built that thing, flew it and sold it...just to get something new to build. Wish I had kept it sometimes. It was a very nice flying plane.
