RE: ASP Engines
I've been using glow engines since 1954 and I have a pretty fair handle on how they work. First off most, if not all, 4 cycles will run just fine without muffler pressure. Second, a leaking valve has nothing to do with muffler pressure and that's what's wrong with two of the three. I think the people at Hobby People would have figured that out if a plugged muffler nipple was the problem. Do you really think they would have sent my engine that didn't work along with another new one if it was a plugged nipple? Third, I said it wouldn't idle, I didn't say it wouldn't run. That is a sure indication of low compression and that was caused by leaking valves. The nipples aren't machined, they are cast. Machining them would cost a fortune. I have Never seen any OS pressure fitting, 2 or 4 cycle, that came plugged. No Jap engines for that matter. Not ALL Magnum engines have problems but two out of three of mine do. And like Meat Loaf said, "two out of three ain't bad", unless you're talking about Magnum or any other Chinese engine. That's enough on this subject. Like I said, you get what you pay for. It holds true for most of the stuff we use in this hobby. Jeffie, this was really for FIERY's benefit. However, I have never seen a plugged OS pressure fitting and also, a four cycle will run fine without pressure. The originals didn't even come with a muffler.

RE: ASP Engines
Three boxes of junk. One says "keep for parts" on it. Hobby People wrote that. I paid 60 bucks a piece for two of them, nothing for the third. Got EXACTLY what I paid for. For another 60 bucks I could have bought an OS30 and it would have given me no problems and run the first time. Wouldn't have had all the hassle of trying to make it work and then sending it back. I got the saito 30 for $150 on special and it was an excellent buy compared to the Magnums. All the other Magnums I own were returns and the management let me keep them. It was cheaper and easier just to give the customer another engine and not pay me to make them work. I would use them to repair engines out of warranty at no charge. Good for customer relations. Now as for the original poster, take this post as to what I think about ASP engines and Chinese engines in general. Asp and Magnum are made by the same Chiese company. Now the older magnums made by Thunder Tiger were much better than the Chinese Magnums.

RE: ASP Engines
And I have three of the magnum 30 four cycles. I bought two of them when Sheldon went out of business. I ran one and it wouldn't idle at all. The valves leaked. Nothing I did solved the problem. Sent it back to Hobby People. They agreed it was not fixable and sent it and another one back at no charge. I didn't even bother to try and run the new one or the other unused one I had as the other had lousy compression too.. I didn't even try to sell the first one on ebay as I didn't want some other guy to get stuck with it. All three are in a box in the basement. I solved the problem by using an OSFS26. I also hve a Saito 30 that is an excellent engine. I use OS, Saito and Enya four cycles. Seidel is not what I'd call a major engine manufacturing company.

Use a perry Micro oscillating pump. You don't need all the other stuff you mentioned. Just hook up the pump and you are in business.

RE: ASP Engines
You had ONE OS with a problem and I have dozens that never had a problem. Except a 46SF that I got used with a worn liner. I have no clue what the original owner did with it. It still has good compression and runs very well even with the brass showing through the nickel. As for Magnums, I've owned several and repaired dozens. Same with ASPs but I never owned an ASP for the simple reason they are hit and miss in the quality department. If you need a four cylinder or seven cylinder four cycle then you better look at OS as no other major manufacturer makes them. As for a 5, your choice is OS or Saito. Same for a big twin. Like I said, you get what you pay for.

RE: Revolution Control Line System.
You DON'T always have to step back on take of or landing. Not if the plane is built right and you take off on the downwind leg. One can not just casually step back in events like combat or rat race. There are other guys in the circle with you. A combat plane is about as light as they come.
ORIGINAL: aspeed Yes, you always have to step back on takeoff and landings if it is a light plane. That is kind of why I wondered if anyone actually tried it. Maybe they haven't sold too many. It looks quite well manufactured. That is the worst feeling when the wind catches it when you are too high and the motor is stopped, and torque rolls on takeoff too.
RE: Voodoo Plane
Check one of the 1961 Model Airplane news magazines. There is a write up on the Voodoo in it. I can dig it out but not tonight. Also the ads for the kit didn't start until then. Another little item, The Voodoo instructions show a Johnson Combat Special which wasn't made until late 1960 so the kit had to have come out later than than that.

RE: Voodoo Plane
The original Voodoo was designed by Riley Wooten in 1961. It was kitted by CARL GOLDBERG. At the time it was the only kit Goldberg sold that wasn't his design. The Voodoo took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 1962 Nats using Johnson engines. Johnson took all three places in all the catagories (open, junior, and senior) at those NATS. I flew Combat at the 63 NATS. I was 16 and it was something else hanging out with the "Big Boys". Didn't do all that great but I took 26 place in senior and thought I'd won the world championships. I built and flew dozens of Voodoos in the early 60's as well as other kitted designs. The Voodoo was made in two variations. One had short booms and one had long booms. I built nothing but short booms. Got too old for Open AMA combat. The kids were beating me left and right. Reflexes tend to slow with age. The Voodoo had a 36 inch span. The only difficult part in plan building was the shaped leading edge. Wooten solved that with his DEMON. It used a 1/2 inch square leading edge. Otherwise it was pretty much a Voodoo. I have one of those now and a couple voodoos. The one in the picture was made in 1966 but never flown. It has a Johnson C/S on it. The kits were $2.95 for the single and $4.95 for the double. Goldberg made two other C/L kits that were really smaller versions of the Voodoo. The 1/2A was the Li'l Satan and later he released the Junior Satan that used a 15. Fast Airplane. The one I built used a Cox Special 15 Mk II. A Super Satan came out later. I have plans for all of them. I still fly these now and then with old high school buddies. We drink a few beers and relive our past. They took all the fun out of combat these days. No one can afford it anymore. I financed my hobby back in the 60's delivering the Seattle Times. The most expensive engine was the Johnson 36 Ball Bearing at $24.95. Had to win those at that price. I still have a bunch of Johnsons. That's all I used untill Hi quit making them and we went to Super Tigre.
ORIGINAL: Jim Thomerson A 35 engine, in this case. Displacement of @ 0.35 cubic inches, about 7 times as large as an .049. The original Voodoo was designed about 1959. They were kitted by Top Flite and were a very popular airplane. Most control line old-timers have flown a Voodoo at one time or another. They were designed for control line combat and were fast and maneuverable. CAD plans are modern plans using "Computer Aided Design". the kit prices are just for interest, telling you that is what the kits cost back in the 60's. There was a single kit to build one, and a double to build two. I understand that Riley Wooten got 25 cents for each kit sold. (Don't know if he got 50 cents for the double[;)]
RE: OS engines users Club
The S means it was a non throttled C/L engine. They still use that designation at OS. It is a 10FSR-S. No carb and they cost more that a carburetted engine. Go figure. A carb will cost over 20 bucks.

RE: magnum .45 Pro won't unwind
The original KAOS was a an FAI pattern airplane and used a 60. It was a top contender in it's day. I flew two of them with the old OS60FSR with a Perry pump. I ran all my engones on K&B 100 back then and it was 5% nitro and 20% castor. They ran just fine. The highest nitro I ever used was 10$ except in 1/2A stuff and combat engines where I used 25%.

RE: magnum .45 Pro won't unwind
I have both too and the parts are exactly the same. They are completely interchangable. Yes, Lee gave them a good write up but he only ran them for a short time. They had quality control problems with their carbs and problems began to show up after a year's use or so. Royal ran all their engines before they sold to make sure problem engines weren't sold. My good friend Jerry Toppel was the sales rep for Royal. Hobby Shack just sold them as fast as they could and took the bad ones back under warranty.

My Kaos is a 60 sized airplane. A weak 45 wpn't get it off the ground. Yeah the Royal and the Taiwan Magnums are the same engine made in the same dactory. Only difference is the crankcase casting with the logos different. Same assembly line. Same quality (?). A set of bearing from RC-Bearings would cost less than 10 bucks and you'd have a better engine.

An OS 45FSR will turn a 10X6 prop around 13,500 rpm. The 45 Pro is just an OS clone and should turn a 10x6 about the same. Mine do. Should turn an 11x6 around 12,000

RE: saito question please:
The FA90 MkII is a twin engine that came out in the early 80's. Excellent engine. PM me your address and I'll send you a copy of the instruction sheet. It has a dual carb and you must set both cylinders. Not hard to do but it takes a touch. Same with the air bleed idle. Great engine. I run mine on 10% nitro and a 14x6 prop. There are no reed valves or anything like that. There are two standard airbleed carbs in one aluminum block. You can't see the rotor turn as there is a 90 degree bend or turn in the airflow.
