RE: Larger Revolver
Concerning the smell of gas. When i transport mine I empty the tank and then put a stopper in the vent line. Also close the throttle. I know, i know.. All it takes is a hint of fuel and it can stink up the car. Others use coleman fuel mix with excellent results. It doesn't smell at all. The octane is less , but they say it doesn't effect performance. I have never run it myself but many have. Dan

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
Mach2, Yep.. Thats me on the Revolver thread. I cant belive how big that thread is. I have servo in the tail as reccomended with flying a saito 82 . You need the weight in the tail for that engine. The guys are fling the rimfire 80 with a 6 cell 4500 to 5000 ma . The plane takes off in a few feet and the vertical is more than anyone needs. Just returned from the field and returned with what i brought.. Always a good day when that happens. I flew my 3d hobbyshop extra and the h9 frenzy . A good day. My gp extra is at a members house that loves to do repairs. The gear is a little tweeked so he is renforcing it. Plus i dropped off 5 other planes for him to fix. Mostly gear issues, some wings, etc. this guy is 85 and enjoys fixing and building. I dont know how he fixes this stuff so fast, but its like factory new when he returns it. Leaves me for more flying time during the season.. Enjoy, Dan

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
ORIGINAL: mach2 Thanks. Im gonna go back to a engine and prop question. First off, I bought this plane with a OS 46ax in it and it seemed way underpowered. However, i watched a review video with someone doing a high altitude hover with the 46 (albeit a ton of throttle). Anyway, I put a 55ax in it. It flies way better. I started off with a apc (not a big fan, but the local store didnt have any xoars in stock) 12x6 and it was okay. I wanted a little more pull so i went to a 12x5, but the design is different between the two. the 12x5 has a narrower blade towards the tip which I would think reduce the amount of thrust. So im going to order some xoar props and hopefully that will be better. What props are you guys using with this plane and a 55ax? Now a motor question. Im kinda spoiled by my DLE20, so im thinking of putting something like a OS 95v four stroke in the Extra. Im considering this because GP recommends a .81 size FS, and the 95 is the same weight. And ive got the difference in weight between the 55ax and the 95v in the cowl with lead weights anyway. Anyone with experience with any of these combos, please chime in. Thank you, Jeremy
Hi mach2, I originally had a os 55 with a 13x4 prop on it.. It was aweful. It wouldnt hover like a good 4 stroke ... I put a 12x6 and it flew scale like. I swapped it out for a saito 82 and i feel this is the perfect combo for this plane. It's by no means a 3d deamon.. But it flys imac routines well and tracks like an arrow with knife edge. Other guys at the club went electric with theirs and put a rimfire .80 in it. Let me tell you, that combo is ballistic. I cant believe the vertical it has with the electric.. Leaves me in the dust ,but mine sounds way cooler with the 4 stroke. This plane is not a boutiuque electric, like the 3d hobbyshop, aeroworks, etc..built heavier to take on the task of electric or nitro

I thought it would be a good plane to fly in imac. at least as a newbie. Back to my thoughts on a 30cc plane. I love the looks of the GW MX2, but i think the better plane which is the same price is the AW

They sound terrific and have loads of power. I would love to have one. I believe they are equal to a 40 / 50 cc gasser. Look on youtube for some ideas. They sound so much nicer than your run of the mill 40 cc gas engines .. Love that saito deep growl. I saw a guy put one on a large sundowner.. Overpowered to say the least.

RE: RE:
I would say a pair of saito 180 to 210's would do nicely in the heavier frame. I think the saito 120 would be minimum. I know this plane originally called for .60s ..but i have a pair of .40s on a twinstar and love the performance. As far as your 300's .. I bit overkill for this plane.

Wow.. 196 pages of revolver... Does it ever get tiring. I remember in the old days (maybe page 10)..we used to use nitro.. My revolver is on the bench with minor gear fix issues. Even after the beefing up the block came loose. But it did last for quite some time. Havent posted here in a while , but Ive been lurking. Flew is my first IMAC this year... Lots of fun for all you pilots that want to perfect your flying.. Cheers, Dan

RE: Larger Revolver
Microdon ...That wind this morning in the northeast (ct) was killer .. Crosswinds like crazy at the field.. I was flying my goldberg ultimate and had a tough time bringing her in ...then decided it was heli time and flew the raptor 50... That does amazing well in the wind If you look at some of my eariler posts on this board , i think i clocked my revolver at 114. I had a gps logger in the plane and overlayed the results on google earth. The revolver is fast for a larger plane .. But i have a smaller racer with a dubb jett 60 lx ..now thats a screamer.. RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: Wine Country Flyer From reading this whole thread, I knew the 125 Saito would be recomended. I'll see which one I use when I get started. That still might be a ways off due to a couple medical issues we have to take care of here. But thanks for the encouragement. John
I had a st90 with a bisson pitts muffler. The speed was great. Very fast ,never a problem with the motor. After flying for a couple seasons i swapped it out for a saito fa125. My reason was that i enjoy the thottle control i get with 4 strokes not to mention that great 4 stroke tone. With the 2 stroke i always flew it at full throttle and had to let the engine wind down. Its a personal preference on my part. But, if youre into burning holes in the sky and blazing fast knife edge passes..2 strokes are wonderful in this plane. I re enforced my gear from the get go, but this season my eyes played tricks on me and i missed the runway by a couple feet and the revolver decided to rip the gear off anyway. Im almost done with the repair and she'll be flying once again. Happy flying, Dan

RE: Larger Revolver
With spoilerons I can drop off about 50 to 75 ft of runway needed and also come in alpha high/nose up without stalling. It seems that I tend to use it more on a dead calm day with the revolver. When it's windy and blowing directly down the runway I don't use the mix. 1st flight when I started flying the revolver 60 http://youtu.be/2ZUsnL3ZHFQ 2nd flight: http://youtu.be/jPJv69xO2IY I has a st90 2 stroke in it on these vids. Got it up to 114mph. I repowered it this year with a Saito 125. The speed is no where near what it was(which is ok) , but I'm flying it at a smaller field now and needed the added control of a 4 stroke I finally knocked the gear off landing in some tall grass.. I swear I was on the runway!! Minor fix due to the beefup job I did previously. Enjoy, Dan

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
I fly mine with a Saito FA-82. I can hover and domany of the 3d manuvers. It's not the lightest bird in the sky and the wings like to tip in alpha high flying. But ... It's a great 40 size flyer. It looks great in the sky and does knife edge very well. At my club the electric guys took a liking to my plane and bought them. They powered them with rimfire 80's. The performance is spectactular. 2 members used themt in an IMAC meet last week and came in 1st and 3 place in their respected classes. The only thing I did was change out the gear because it kept spreading out on me. It's built slightly heavy but will stand up to lots of abuse as a daily flyer.

RE: RE:
ORIGINAL: terry.mortimore Servo Sizing. Hi Gang: Is there a consensus on Servo sizes to use? I have a pair of Hitec HS-125MG thin wing servos that I've mounted in the horizontal stab, one for each elevator. They are rated at 49 oz.in torque each for a total of 98 oz.in torque for the elevators. I'm hoping these will be adequate, but will re-work if required. I'm interested to find out what I should use for the rudder and ailerons (one per aileron). Any thoughts would be appreciated, Terry.
Terry, So.. The surfaces are a bit large for the low profile servos. Try the line of servos of HD servos. Troybuilt Models carries them. I bought a load of these last season and used them in everything from a 60 size bird on up thru my 50cc models. No failures at all and I'm hard on my planes. HD-DS120M 178 oz-in at 6v Digital Servo with universal connector and Futaba arms 28.99 Also .. I would suggest a good digital servo for throttle that has better centering than the cheapies for repeatable throttle control. Dan

RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: DonLEmmel My R70 has a Super Tigre 60 in it. Last season was my first year with it. The Revolver is a really sweet flying plane and I can't wait to get back in the air with it. The ST 60 ended up being plenty of power for the type of flying I'm doing right now. If things go well with the DLE-30 in the Extra 300 I might upgrade the R70 to a DLE-20. I've gotta hand flick since my starter isn't big enough for the DLE-30. The Extra is really tail heavy at the moment. Where can I get HEAVY weights for large scale planes? I'm guessing I'll need at least 1LB of weight in the nose.
Don, What i do for weight is this: I drill large 1.5 inch holes in a piece of 2x4. (or any size you want) Then get some lead weight .. old fishings lures , etc, take your torch and melt the lead right into the holes you just drilled. Let them cool for a few minutes, drill a couple of holes in them for screws and your done. The next thing I do is weigh them up and write hown many oz they are. Keep them handy in your field box for quick balance fixes at the field. I would hesitate to put 1lb of weight in any plane and try to balance it out by either moving the engine forward, tail rudder servo forward and anything else you can think of. Rememder it's like a see-saw so a lille bit of weight on the tail or the nose makes a huge difference. Dan

RE: Larger Revolver
Clevises , connectors, ez connectors... I've used them all... I used to spend $$ and replace all my stock linkages. On my bigger planes I use ball links. On the smaller 40 class planes I have come down to using the stock parts and what comes with the plane. Sometimes even a simple z-bend serves the purpose. Care must be taken to check all your clevis' and connections prior to flying. Most clevises and ball links, etc come apart during transport. just make sure that you have a good small scrap piece of tubing over the clevis and you'll be fine. In fact it useually was my bad in not checking connections and getting the "I just wanna fly" syndrome when getting to the field. These days I just like to keep it all simple and light and stock gear works great. I use those "ez connectors and use them all the time. Special care be taken when drilling the hole in the servo arm for a nice snug fit and just hit the allen screw with some locktite. Soooo easy .. Most of my crashes and mishaps are due to dead sticks and the gear ripping off on a nasty landings or worse. Or just me dumbing it up and getting in wierd spins and stalls that no matter what I did Terra firma was inevitable.

RE: Larger Revolver
No question that gas is smelly .. to and from the field .. not to mention if it gets on your clothes. Once I was picking up a plane that I bought from a guy. Had it in my front seats that are perferated leather.. He didn't drain it completely and the vent dripped into the seat ... It took me so long to get the smell out. So .... Some old timers at our field use coleman fuel (white gas) mixed with 2 stroke oil. I've seen them fly with it and they seem to run just fine on it. advantage - No smell I've never used the fuel so I can't comment on performance but I can comment on the no smell. I also love the choke, flip, run of a gasser.. Nothin like starting up my 110cc DLE .. It's so awesome.. Dan
