RE: os .46 axii
Either fuel is good but for my own use I put a couple of ounces of regular castor in the cool Power and use the Omega just as it comes. I use them both and haver never needed to re-tune an engine. The Omega will brown up an engine quicker, and leave a pink slime while the cool power has a light green slime.

RE: Great Planes Goldberg Anniversary Cub Kit
Hi Rye, I flew one of these for several years and finally sold it to one of my buddies. The Cub was covered in solartex and painted so it was a little heavy. Also the wing was clipped and while it would fly very slow it was really aerobatic. Like most cubs it was very squirrelly on the ground. The plane didn't know what a tip stall was. If I was to build another (I have a kit waiting) It would definitely be a clipped wing version again. I have a world Airborne Paulistina for sale (Brazilian cub) but it has a full wing and looks too nice or I would shorten it as everyone needs a cub to fly. Fred

RE: Big Stick 60 (GreatPlanes)
It appears my 60 size GP Stik was/is exactly the same as yours. I epoxied a piece of thin ply across the front of the former and sanded it a little at a time till the wing was a snug fit. The plane was flown several times before and many times since the fix and no problems. Fred

RE: Hobbico Avistar a Performer?
To be a bit different in response to your questions I have actually had a couple of Avistars with LA engines as well as ST and OS 40/46's. An Avistar is not exactly a trainer because of it's semi-symetrical wing. While it can be used as a trainer it is a lot better plane for simple aerobatics than a flat bottom wing trainer. All those I have seen were Semi-symetrical but it's always possible they made a flat bottom wing version. I flew one for a long time with a Thunder Tiger 46 which is a very good engine(not to be confused with a Super Tigre). Your problem is going to be weight. The avistars I have had easily balanced out without any extra lead using an LA engine, so if you use a ballbearing 40/46 you may need quite a bit of weight on the tail end to balance it. The OS55 is an even better engine but does weigh just a little more than most 46's. I have flown two different 40 size Decathalons and both were a real handfull on the ground. You might do some research on them and get advice from those who have actually had the plane. Be carefull using a two stroke on a plane that you plan to invert the engine. 4 strokes work well that way but two strokes can be problematic no matter how well they are tuned. The Decathalons I flew had side mounted engines. Fred

RE: Bad engine plane combos, learnt the hard way
My vote goes with Pete. If I know that sanye makes it I'll let others take the risk while I will go for the sure thing, like OS , Saito or Thunder Tiger and I do know how to tune and run an engine. Just purchased a NIB Magnum 91 4-Stroke. The HS needle is so loose that I was afraid it would fall out, but after sliding some fuel tubing over the HS needle the engine runs ok, this has never happened on any of the OS,Saito or TT engines that I have owned.
ORIGINAL: aero580 need some help- ive been flying for a few years now, mostly sport and 3-d. would like to get into pattern ships. is the koas a good choice?
Did you notice that you were asking a question in a 2003 thread? The Kaos arf is not expensive so why not go ahead and purchase it. If you don't like it for a pattern trainer just use it for every day. Fred

RE: Magnum engines?
The 91 4-S is the only magnum I currently own. It is the newest version before the blue valve cover. It runs fine but the needle valve was so loose right out of the box I was afraid it would fall out so I used some fuel tubing over it and it is just fine. An OS or Saito it isn't but for the price you won't go wrong. Fred

RE: Avistar RX Batt and prop?
I have an Avistar that I got in a three plane deal. It has an LA40 and it pulls it right along. The evo 46 should be even better if it runs ok. I was concerned about the battery because it is a 4.8 600mah. I can fly the heck out of it for 4 ten minute flights and only use 100 mah out of the battery with the standard futaba servos that came in it. I believe I could safely fly 2 more flights or hit it with the field charger as it would not take that long to fully charge it. Flat packs seem to be easier for me to install in the plane so that is my favorite. I use airtronics 2.4 systems since the servos quit working long before the voltage is low enough to cause a "brown out". No need for a fancy charger, just get an appliance timer and set it up with your wall charger to come on for an hour or so every day and it will keep your batteries topped off and ready to go if you only fly one or two days a week and they are not consecutive. A 2000mah rx battery might take something a little different. JMHO Fred

RE: Down Elevater to fly level?
One more thing to check. You need to make sure the leading edge of the horizontal stab is not broke. They are very weak and it could be broke but not completely and be flexing.

RE: Avistar wing
I have a newer version Avistar like yours and all it has is one little strap on the bottom. I did add a strip of packing tape on the bottom behind the ail servo. Once the rubber bands that hold the wing on are in place that wing isn't going anywhere. Years ago I had a horizon trainer called the easy-2 (?) and it was similar but only had a real small rubber band holding the wing together for transport as the bands holding the wing on would not let it come apart. I know I tried as it went thru a couple of trees and many many rough landings along with a new firewall and the wing joiner system never failed. fred

RE: Angry with saito 100!
Before you go tearing it apart make sure you do not have some kind of restriction in the fuel suppy. If something is restricting the fuel flow it will do just what you are describing. Would have been easy for something to have been in the new set up and now is in the fuel passage way of your carb. Fred

RE: UNKNOWN SIMITAR Need help with CG
NOT 21%. Do a search when you have a lot of time as there is a ton of good reading out there on Simitars. A Simitar balances at 10%. While I'm definitely not an expert on Simitars (only had 3 and just one at the present time) the plane in the photo does not look like any Simitar I have ever seen. Fred

RE: TT Pro 46 BB vs OS 46 AX ?
Real world hands on experience. I have had limited experience with the 46AX ( ran two different 46AX's all one summer)but lots of actual experience With the 55AX and 46FX and the Thunder Tiger 46PRO. If you were to put an OSAX 46 and a TT46 PRO on the same plane and use the same fuel and same prop you would not be able to tell the difference in the way and ease that they started and ran. I have read that the TT has a true chrome liner and believe if that is so , that the TT might last longer. I have ran over 14 gallons thru one TT46 and quit keeping track as it still had the same power and pinch as it did when new. The most used OS AX engine that I have has used maybe 5 gallons and runs better all the time. You will not go wrong with either engine. Fred

RE: Saito Engines Inverted
I have several in use now and have had many planes with inverted Saitos and not had a problem yet (KOW). Use an OS-F plug and you will probably have to go a tiny bit leaner on the low end, other than that it is a non issue. Fred

RE: Buddy Box for Futaba T8FG
My experience , though somewhat limited, is that if your tx has the little square plug then it will work with another futaba tx that has the same little square plug. I just started helping a new flyer that has the 6 ch 2.4 Futaba and it worked great with the futaba buddy box that tower sold. I do not see it listed anymore but if you can find one I believe it should work and they were cheap. If my advice is wrong I'm sure there are others that will correct it. Better yet call tower tomorrow and they should be able to help you with the correct information. Fred

RE: What is the stupidest thing somebody else has done to your jet?
Not a jet thing but where we park we can keep our planes right at the back of our vehicles. I really do not like people laying all over my car and walking around, over and thru my planes setting on the ground. I was telling a flying buddy about how it bothered me and how sooner or later someone would step or trip over a plane and I would have a blow up. Guess what- I look up and he has stepped over my planes to be able to sit on the back of my car!! I just look at him and he looks up and says something I can't hear and moves away from my car.

RE: Silicone fuel tubing turned
I had some tubing do the same but I used a different fuel than you. After I sent the rest of the 50 ft roll back to the seller for a refund I purchased 12 ft of a different brand from a local hobby shop. The new stuff turned stiff and would crumble in your fingers after soaking in my fuel jug for a couple of months. The tubing I'm using now isn't blue and seems to be holding up ok. I doubt that it's your fuel, my opinion it is the tubing. Fred

RE: For what it's worth
I did the research on one guy and he really put the screws to me. Dave Cranford aka VooDoo something took my money and disappeared. Times are tough but I wouldn't lower myself to the level of these liars and thieves. Fred

RE: 4 stroke mounting
Acdii, you should look real close at the plans as the T-34's that I have been around have the support for the nose gear in the way so you have to mount the engine at any angle except inverted. Four strokes inverted are a non-issue, they run just fine once tuned. Fred

RE: Routing Crankcase Vent
I used a set up similar to yours in your photo all last summer and it worked just fine. I did use a piece of larger size aluminum tubing for the last couple of inches that was attached to the muffler and out in the exhaust stream. Once your engine is well run in and you lean the low end as much as possible the vent oil will be much less. I believe it to be beneficial to your engine to keep the vent line as short as possible. I would not think plumbing it into the muffler would work as the exhaust pressure in the muffler would be higher than the pressure in the vent line. Fred

RE: Motor size
You might give an 11x5 prop a try. I have found an 11x5 to be better on my TT46's than a 12x4. I also have several OS55AX's in use and there is no comparison between them and the 46 size engines. I replaced a Saito 82 with the 55AX and the 55 is better on my 6 lb plane.

RE: O.S. 55AX 3-blade prop size question
Pete, there have been a lot of posts on props for the OS 55. I have run a couple of them since they came out. a 12x5 is the largest I will use. If I remember correcty it has been posted on here several times that you need to prop it for 13,000-13,500 at least on the ground to keep it in it's powerband. the larger props recommended in the manual are for noise abatement and can overwork/overheat the engine specially when it is new. There will be those that disagree with me and maybe they get away with using the larger props but IMHO they are not getting the most out of the engine. An 11x6 or 11x7 three blade would be a good place to start or try your 10x7 and see what the tach says. Fred

RE: Need help identifying plane.
Those measurements exactly match my World/Airborne P-51. The photos of the interior look the same. There are probably some cheaper clones out there as my buddy had one and the cowl was the same size but the air scoop was different.

RE: Need help identifying plane.
Does look like a World/Airborne the way the lower air scoop mounts. What is the height and width of the front of the fuselage? Measure that and I can compare it to the new cowl I have. Fred
