RE: New SV Gassers
It did run good, but I have it tore down right now. I thought it had a bad bearing, but now I see the bearing fits loosely into the case. I have a new rear case, and the bearing will have to be tapped into that one. The bearing feels fine... I sure wish I had a set of gaskets for this thing. Guess i'll have to make em again.

RE: New SV Gassers
It's a personal preference I guess, but I just install the engines, and start em, tune em, and fly em. I don't break gas engines in, and I also run em on 100:1 full synthetic from the first start now. I don't break in my chain saws or weedeaters either. Only engines with pinch type cylinders need to be broke in a little before pounding on them. Thats my opinion, and I don't think there is really a correct way, it's just whatever works for you. Life would be boreing if we all did everything the same way. [:D]

RE: FRL45 Gas engine Whats the verdict?
Apparently, as other manufacturers have learned, fully symmetrical spacing results in very a-symmetrical rotational load distribution in normal operation, causing excessive wear or early failure of engine mounting lugs/crankcases. Think SPE's on this one.... Where did you read that nonsense ? The reason the ears break off the chinese engine cases is because the metal is inferrior, and the total mass of the ears themselves, is insufficient for the quality of the metal used, and the vibration the ears have to endure. Saving money and weight is one thing, but the chinese go way too far with it. The metalurgy of the chinese engine cases is pathetic to say the least. For a test, before I ground off the remaining 2 ears off my SV26, (before attaching my new mounting plate), I decided to see how bad they really were, and was able to grab the ears with my thumb and first finger, and snap them off with very little effort, like a potato chip (slight exaggeration). Incredibly poor quality metal... When you use inferrior metal such as this, you need to beef up the mass to make up for it. You cannot save weight and money at the same time this way, physics simply will not allow it. Dennis

RE: FRL45 Gas engine Whats the verdict?
When I say 1/8 inch wont be detectable to the eyeball, im refering to the Super Stearman cowl, which has a huge opening. I never use the dummy engines because I like to be able to see in there for inspection. In either case, you can adjust your cowl to be centered perfectly around the prop hub when you make the mounting holes for it. Dennis

RE: GP Super Stearman
I edited more into my last post in case you want to reread. Yes, the landing gear glass covering is prone to cracking, so when I saw the cracks starting, I put scotch tape over the leading and trailing edges of the glass covering. It undectable when lookin at it unless I point it out, and the cracks havn't spread any further. On posting pics here... My camera makes my pics 800x600, but I think they don't post here until I shrink em to 400x300 (50%). I could verify that if you would like... Let me know. Dennis

RE: FRL45 Gas engine Whats the verdict?
On mine, I bolted the stands to the engine, and held it up to the friewall, and eyeballed from the front to get my up/dn and left/right, until I had the tip of the shaft exactly where I wanted it in relation to the lines in the firewall, then drew around the stands with the fine tip marker, the drilled in the center of the circles, and bolted it on there. Then I mounted the cowling ring, and positioned the cowling so the shaft was eyeball dead center, then CA'ed the cowl to the ring temoprarily in a few spots, then carefully unbolted and removed the cowl, and epoxied it all good. Put it back on, and it looks dead center to my eyeballs, and it flies great. [:D] I have tried doing the measureing thing before, and it always turned out goofy, but the eyeball method seems to work great every time. Works for me anyway... If your prop shaft winds up being 1/8" off, in either direstion, it wont be detectable to the human eye, and the plane won't know the difference either, and the right thrust is already built into the firewall...

RE: GP Super Stearman
I had to on mine, so I would say yes. It shouldn't take much pressure though. Mine needs a little (maybe 2 degree's) of elevator downtrim for level flight, so maybe I should have pushed down a little harder on the front. Nah, it flys likes it's on rails, so thats perfect enough for me... You can always add a couple of flat washers under the front or rear of the top wing for minor trimming, but im not going to bother. I love the way it flys as it is. [:)]

RE: GP Super Stearman
You are correct, to each his own. lol I dont run nitro engines anymore at all, and with the gassers, once ya set em, they don't need any further adjustments. Set em a little fat in the winter, and they are good for the summer months. I can't even get to my carb ajustments. I tuned it with the cowl off, and I should never have to touch them again, I love it ! My engine started running lean last night, but I knew it couldn't be an adjustment, and sure enough, my fueler was just leaking. Took the fueler apart, stretched the spring, and im installing a new nitril o ring, and it should be back to perfect again. I fly almost every evening, and it's costing me about $1.50 a night max for fuel. No more nitro for me ! [:D] Oh, and there's never any oil on my plane either, I run full synthetic @ 100:1, and it's clean as a whistle... No more rusty bearings either. Nitro fuel draws moisture out of the air like brake fluid. Once ya go gas, you'll never go back. No more glow starter, no more electric starter, just 5 flips for the first start of the evening, and one flip thereafter. Ya gotta love that !

RE: GP Super Stearman
Throttle adj screw ? Do you mean throttle stop screw ? That should never have to be readjusted. If you mean high speed needle, it has a set screw to secure a wire extension, and the low speed needle can be adjusted thru a small hole in the cowling.

RE: GP Super Stearman
Im impressed... Im surprized they were willing to do that. Yeah, the tires are junk, but get you by for a while. It's a shame we can't bend the landing gear to make the wheels track straighter. Im afraid it would break the fiberglass covering. This is my 2nd GPSS, and the tires tend to wear off at a severe angle. Never thought I would rotate the tires on a model airplane before. Thats ok, the awesome appearance of these bipes is worth goin thru a few tires along the way. I think the Super Stearman is the best lookin plane ever produced. [:D] I dunno, there's just something about the way everything flows together, pure style...

Watching a speeding Cap 232 fly right thru my 81" Piper Cub was a good show. Watching my last Super Stearman getting shot down was not a good show either. I don't fly at sanctioned flying sites anymore. I'd rather fly off a quiet country road with noone around except me and maybe a couple of close friends, but alone is fine too... I don't really enjoy having spectators around when im flying, it's annoying at best.
