RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks guys, I know Pete. He flies at our club. I saw the maiden of his P-38. I'll check out the discussion on the FG site. I like your "wait and see" idea. Works for me since I'm just working on the flaps now. Thanks again,

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi All: First off, a big thanks to Sam for answering all my questions on his tail wheel retract. On a different topic, I have a DA-85 I was planning on using in the Corsair (never even started), but I've been hearing some disturbing reports on extreme vibration in this engine. I know I have to send it back to DA for a piston refit (mine is a pretty low serial number), but some are saying that even with the repair the vibration is still excessive. I've done some searches and can't find anything that talks about vibration problems such as cracked mufflers and spinners that have been thrown off. Does anyone have any first or second hand experience with this motor ? I'm having second thoughts!! thanks,

Jarrah, This kit is really pretty easy to understand and build. This is also my first "big" kit. I've only had a couple of questions so far. Just post your questions and someone always responds with good info. You'll have lots of support here.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi Guys, A Progress report: I mated the three wing panels last night and I'm pleased with the results. I glued them together with the wing right-side-up, using the wash-out jigs to set the proper dihedral and wash-out. After it set over-night, I flipped the whole assembly over and it rested perfectly on the 7/8" support under the middle section and with the panel spars and T7 tabs resting on the bench. So far, so good. I didn't have a surface big enough and flat enough to mate the panels, so I bought a 4'x8' piece of 3/4" MDF from Home Depot (about $25). They ripped it so I had one 2' x 8' piece and 2 - 4" x 8' pieces. I used Liquid Nails and finishing nails to attach the two 4" runners under the main piece. It's flat as glass in all dimensions. This piece sits on an aluminum food prep table I have that has wheels on the legs. Perfect to manuever around !! Also making progress on the fuse top. Will probably start sheeting both later this week. Thanks All,

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob, You're right about the Errata sheet. I printed it off even before I bought the kit. I thought I made notes in the manual for all changes, but missed that one completely. It says the wing should be 7/8" off the table. Will go with that for now. I'll put the spacer on the aft side of the spar as shown in the illustration. Thanks,

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob and Fly, I'm tweaking the wing sections in preparation to mate them. I have a couple of questions for everyone: Page 18, step 5: For some reason I started trimming the LE's, TE's, and tip panel spars with the spacer on the forward side of the main spar. Is everyone setting up the wing with the spacer on the "aft" side of the main spar ? I quess ultimately, it would only make a 1/8 inch difference, but ?????? Page 18, step 7: Are you all setting the dihedral block so the wing is 7/8" off the bench or 1 1/4" off the bench?? Page 19-20, step 8: Same question for the 1 1/4" x 1 3/4" block; which side is against the bench?? Thanks everyone,

OK Gary. Here ya go. My Corsair is a little bit behind yours. I have a couple more hours of gluing and sanding.......but here she is!! Three pieces of main wing ready to mate, tail feathers, and Sara, my wing dog. And for those of you that know central Texas, Woody's Smokehouse on I-45; great barbeque and splits up the drive from Dallas to Houston. A must see !!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob, Already started making a new center section. I'm laminating 1/16 balsa with two outer sheets of 1/32 ply for strength. Also using 4 hinge points instead of three. I won't use the new laminated piece for the whole center section, but will taper it down to half-way down the shaped LE.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi Guys, Ran into a minor problem tonight that I don't remember seeing anything about earlier in the thread. I was building the rudder out of the three pieces of 1/8 balsa. The middle piece isn't cut wide enough (fore to aft) to fit into the groove in the shaped LE. The three pieces match the plan when laid over it if the middle piece was just butted up against the aft end of the shaped LE. I was getting ready to cut a new one out of 1/8 balsa, but thought I'd check with you all to see if I'm missing something basic here. Ideas ?? Thanks,

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
My LE fit nearly perfect. The aft R1 & 2 ribs are already scored to remove an area large enough to accomodate the wheels when retracted. A thin strip remains to support the top sheeting.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob, I forgot that most of those two ribs get knocked out anyway !! I feel better. I think I'll wait until I get the outer panels built and see how those TEs line up with the mid section TE; just as another sanity check. Started on the horizontal stab last night. All is looking good. Thanks,

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Here are some pics of what the prob is: The first one is if I align the TE with both R1s, both R2s are really out of whack, but all the other ribs are acceptable. The second image is if I align the TE with the middle four ribs (R's 5-6), both R's 1 & 2 are out of alignment. What they hey ??? The whole middle wing is true and square to itself. It just doesn't seem to match the curve of the TE. The balsa TE matches the plan. The LE fits very nicely. Ring any bells with anyone? P.S. Those aren't my hands !!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Bob, Thanks for the reply. I should have posted a photo. Not sure I explained what the problem is clearly. With the middle wing sitting on the bench, right side up, looking at the aft rib ends, eye level even with the TE and looking horizontally at the wing (TE not glued on yet): the gull curve of the rib ends is not the exact same curve of the balsa TE piece. If I hold the balsa TE up to the wing and line it up so it evenly covers port and stbd R1s, the top of R2 rib ends are well above the top of the balsa TE. If I line up the middle flat part of the TE with the middle ribs (R5 & R6), R3 and R4 seem to line up OK, but now R1 & 2 on both sides are off. I'll try to post a few pics tonight when I get home. Thanks again,

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Barry, Thanks for asking. I'm at pretty much the same place you are. I started with the middle wing. No fuse yet or tail section yet. I have the fore and aft ribs glued to the main spar. The balsa LE lines up nicely with the front of the ribs, but the balsa TE does not. If I center it over the R1 ribs, there is quite an offset for the R2 ribs (and vice-versa). I was just sitting here trying to go through this massive thread to find if anyone else came across this problem. My spar is perfectly flat, the ribs are squared to it, so it almost appears the shape of the LE is not matching; although it does match the plan perfectly ??? Nick

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Not too worried about trying to hide the engine. I'm not going for true scale here with my first big kit; just stand off (next zip code) scale. In other words, I'm just hoping it still looks like a Corsair when I'm done !! Once I get a ways into the build, I'll decide if I want to go through the extra effort, or just "fly it". Thanks, Nick

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi Guys, Thought I'd jump in here. My TF kit arrived yesterday. WOW. I started inventorying the pieces and quickly got overwhelmed!! Hope to get started this weekend. It's been many years since I actually built a KIT, but I needed a project that wouldn't be done in a couple of weeks. I have a new DA-85 looking for a home. Would it be too much for this plane? Although I'm not sure you can put too much power in a warbird. Gary, Terry, I'll be ordering a set of the gear doors from you. Will talk to you next time I see you at NDRCC field. Gary, hope you don't mind if I pick your brain on this project. When are you coming back out to the field. If there is a Brotherhood number left, I'd be honored to get one. Thanks all, Nick

Mike, Yours did lift off a lot smoother than mine and looked like it was going to be OK. In the begining of the video, it looked like you had more elevator throw than I did. Were you set for the 15mm up/down? Maybe with elevators and canards, it really doesn't need that much movement once airborne. I had quite a bit of expo dialed into mine for that first flight (or takeoff) for that very reason. Not sure what's next for me. Nick

Bummer Mike. We're Oh for two ! Did you seem to have enough air speed so it wasn't a stall condition? Did you have to hold a lot of UP to keep it flying once it left the ground? How was it at the point of rotation? Did you put the bigger nose wheel up front? Still debating on whether to try another one of these. Nick

RE: EasyTiger Models Tigerline X-29 Build
Bob and Mike, This is the first plane I built that did not survive the maiden. I think it would have been fine had it sat at even a slightly positive attitude while on the gear, or just neutral would have been OK. I came so close to buying a longer front landing gear several times, but blew it off. Do yours sit with a nose down attitude? I think it had plenty of speed to get airborne on its own. It just took so much UP to overcome the negative stance that once it crossed over to positive, it just went vertical and lost all energy. I couldn't push the nose over quick enough. I'll try to figure out how to post the (short) video !! Nick
