RE: Is this a cox .020 peewee???
I think it's a carb from an OS PET .09. Dave

RE: SEAWIND EP
I scabbed a larger, thin plastic sheet onto the existing rudder, problem solved. (I'll post a pic tonight) Also trimmed off some of the wingtip sponsons, a very good mod. The pictures below tell the story of the hard "landing" that broke the nacelle, then the water in the hull shorted out the ESC and my propeller proceeded to chew up the plane while it was floating out of reach. It's all fixed, and flew it again just this last weekend! Dave

RE: basswood vs balsa for planking
I like basswood a lot. I used it for the toe rail on an old fireboat that I built and rebuilt. Dave http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5113567/anchors_9520377/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9520377

Rudder Bird Takes Wing
My Dad "Bud" and the Sterling "Rudderbird" I had built long ago (some 30 years ago) using the remnants of the first one that we had built in the early 70's. Flown with the original OS .19 and a modern Futaba radio (if you consider FM "modern" anymore..) A nice flying plane that I'd recommend. It has Coverite and RS "Perfect" paint for finish. Dave

RE: What can I put on this?
I think Hollywood is right, a modern 15 is too much for something with a 32" span. Also I think he's right about 'light and fast', so the TD 09 is a really good choice, or an old OS 10 or Enya 09 if you insist on throttle control, but the TD 09 R/C could do that too and save a couple of ounces. A Norvel .074 could possibly work too, if you can score one of those. The Cox is much easier to find, even the R/C ones. Keep the finish super light. 0-0 Silkspan and dope is one option. Dave

Nic, I have used super low-tack scotch tape and 'press and seal' glad wrap in these situations. (like for spray painting Doculam) But watch for bleeding. There is also very low tack 'artists' paper tape, but it is not sticky enough to mask in my experience. RE: Coreltrace & turbocad question
For Autocad its: SCALE, select objects (ALL, usually) pick a base point (the origin, usually) select REFERENCE instead of scale factor pick one wingtip pick the other wingtip type in the desired wingspan and it will resize everything you selected Turbocad tends to use similar commands to Autocad, so this may get you started anyway Dave PS you can use scale factor if you first measure what you have and figure out the required multiplier to get what you want measure 6.25 units want 50 units scale factor is 8 scaling down will require a value smaller than 1....

RE: Balsa core Laminate
Well, being a model builder, I was immediately thinking of where I could use such a nifty material. It would be great for boat bulkheads, or for forward bulkheads on bigger planes. Can't think of much else. It seems these balsa core laminates are a common material for building full scale boats, but they use thicker stuff. I can't seem to find 5mm stuff like this guy uses. I think he uses it for the backs. And yes, solid fronts, birch veneered ply etc etc. This guy is pretty good, and two friends have hired him before and were pleased with his work (and they are both people as fussy as my wife...) Dave http://www.balsacore.com/ http://www.campbellsboatyards.com/campbell35.html "Campbell 35 is a sedan or express built boat on the proven Duffy 35 hull. ....All bulkheads are constructed of balsa core panels with laminate veneer." http://nida-core.com/portuguese/nidaprod_balsalite.htm

Balsa core Laminate
So, my wife & I met with a cabinet maker today who is going to build our new kitchen cupboards. He had some samples of what he uses for the sides of his cabinets. When I picked up the 7x12" piece it seemed really light to me. So I looked at the core, and it's balsa. 4mm thick core with .5mm maple veneers on both sides. The piece weighs about 5 ounces. Dave

Nice deckape! I built one in the mid-70's and I sure like the tan colored booms and masts a whole lot better than the white I painted mine. Mine is dry-docked in the attic in a custom built box. Dave
