RE: Q-25 Pylon Racing
Gary, You don't need my thumbs, just more practice! Hang in there since this is just your first year to pylon race. I have seen a lot of improvement since your first race. Keep up all your hard work and it will be rewarding to you. I appreciate you being a part of our Q-25 pylon racing group. Gene

RE: The OS 25AX is here
Gary, Your suggestion is a good one. Sometimes you have to step back to go ahead. I think our economy and the weather this year has been devastating to our local Q-25 pylon events. We started 2009 with over 40 registered pilots from eight area clubs and have been lucky to get 15-20 to a race. I don't think our $10.00 entry fee this year has been our problem. I see that most pylon races have $20.00 entry fees and guys have to travel for hours to go race. Gary and I were talking about this the other night. Every type of event we have gone to this year the attendance has been down, whether it as a warbird, float fly, scale, or pattern contest. People are not traveling or spending as money at this time. All our local hobby shops have had a slow business year. We can only hope things will get back to normal. Gene

RE: Q-25 Pylon Racing
Hello Daune and Gary I have gotten very little response from the local club guys about a sport plane type pylon class. I have mentioned it at both of the clubs I belong to. I thought it would be a hit, but again no one had any questions or comments. I did have one guy ask if I had considered having a warbird pylon class using the already available .20 to .36 size ARF warbirds from Great Planes, World Models, Model Tech, and others. I told him the only problem with his suggestion is the same problem I already have with Q-25 in that most club guys don't want to buy/build a special engine and plane just to pylon race. That is why I posted the club sport plane pylon racing information. I have guys come up to me that claim they want to pylon race, but don't want to make the investment in a one event only plane. Where are they now when I need them and trying to give them what the want? You and Gary bring your Rookies and LA Racers or other .40-.46 size sport/warbird planes and we will give you some time to demonstrate them on the pylon course. Maybe seeing is believing or trying! Hello Lee Yes, I do remember you from our meeting at GSW. Great hearing from you again and glad to see your are putting the Viper together. ? upside down, you always seem to do things a little different. As Gary mentioned in his post about electric pylon racing, I spoke with Jerry several months ago about what we were doing in Q-25 and what he was trying to get started with his newly designed electric pylon racer. I have had a few guys approach me about an electric class, but I'm a nitro guy and know very little about electric planes. Hope to see you at FW T-Birds October 18th. Gene

RE: The OS 25AX is here
Don, Thank you for all the engine information. We are still kicking around what we are going to do in North Texas for next year. Stay with the OS.25FX only, allow other .25 engines like the OS .25AX, GMS .25 or other .25s (even if they are out of production) Thunder Tiger .25Pro, Magnum .25XL, etc. We still want to stay away from the MVVS .25 and Webra Speed .25 engines since they do not come with a stock type expansion chamber muffler. We have run all kinds of prop, fuel, and glow plug combinations since we started running some type of .25 class of pylon racing back in 2002. We are getting 16,600 to 17,400 RPMs out of the OS .25FX using a Master Airscrew 8x6 S-2 Series Scimitar prop using 10 to 15% fuel (Omega or PowerMaster) with 16 to 18% oil. The S-2 prop flexes more at the tips and the best we can tell in the air it unloads quicker coming out of the turns. Since our rules allow the APC or Master Airscrew 8X6 props only some guys still run the APC 8x6, but the S-2 is the dominate prop. Master Airscrew now calls this a 8X6 S-2 Combat prop which is light gray instead of dark gray as in the past. When we didn't specify the prop guys were running both the APC 7.8x7 and 8.5x5.5 with great success. Since both of these props had to be specially ordered direct from APC and we promoted a more stock club pylon class most of the guys didn't want them. That is why our rules state commercially available APC or Master Airscrew 8X6 only. Just my $0.02, your feedback is welcome. As it has been stated in an earlier post, do we really want to limit Q-25 to just one engine? Gene

Looking for Q-25 Race Promoters and Clubs
Quote from Don Stegall This is why I'm so excited. I am in touch with a lot of these leaders. Club 40 has been a major success. Quickie 25 is doing well and is growing. The new 540-B AMA Document Set-Back Distances For Sport Pylon Racing has a LOT more clubs interested in hosting races because they now feel they can host races an be in compliance with AMA rules without the hassles of waivers. I am looking for Q-25 pylon race promoters, clubs, and a few committee candidates. Our efforts to promote Q-25 as a sport pilot / club entry pylon class needs your help. I need individuals, racing groups, Clubs to come forward and become a part of the new found interest in pylon racing. As stated in Don's quote, the AMA has helped make it easier for smaller flying site Clubs that couldn't meet the old setback rules to host pylon races or start a new pylon racing event. This allows AMA sanctioned Clubs to host pylon races without having to apply for a special wavier. If your are not racing you should be! Many of our Club sport pilots claim that pylon racing has helped improve their concentration and flying skills. Our Q-25 pilots range from age 14 to 75 years old. I will greatly appreciate any comments you have and will be looking forward to your forum posts. Gene Hodges Q-25 #44 RCPRO Q-25 Committee Chairman Texas Wings & FW Thunderbirds Race Chairman

RE: Q-25 Pylon Racing
Just wanted to stay in touch with everybody. We are in our mid-season break for our Q-25 Pylon Series. Todays temperature in North Texas will be 101 with a heat index of 107, you have to love summertime in this part of Texas. I'm looking forward to going to Briggs, Texas near Austin July 18th-19th to run some Club 40 and 424 pylon races. Since Q-25 uses the same airframe rules as 424 it will give me a chance to see what 424 is all about with hope of starting a 424 series in North Texas for our more advanced Q-25 pilots who are wanting to move up to a faster racing class. Will keep you posted, hopefully with some good news and photos. I'm still looking for other Q-25 race promoters to join in and be countered. Your comments will be greatly appreciated. RE: Q-25 Pylon Racing
This post is a little off the subject but it did bring the two groups together for some good old racing fun. You missed a really great day of racing in Waco. It was a typical hot Texas summer day with both the heat and the emotions going higher. Like Don Stegall has stated before that Q-25 and Club 40 shouldn't be run against each other in the same class, but an occasional special challenge race between them can be fun. Jim Duda and I were team captains with a ten man team for each class with (2) of each class of pylon racer per heat. We run (5) rounds with (5) heats per round. We used a "split the difference" course length of 425' since Q-25 runs on 450' and Club 40 on 400' in Texas. Scoring was 4,3,2,1 points with an extra lap for a cut, only one allowed. When the dust cleared: Q-25 123 points total to Club 40 124 points total. That was some close pylon racing. It cost the Q-25 guys dinner for the winners.

RE: Q-25 Pylon Racing
Not sure how you would enforce "around the pylons". We always said, "Although the cut judges cannot tell if you flew around the pylons, your fellow racers really want you do do that. They may enforce on you if you cause a head-on." Ken Erickson
Ken, Like you said, it's hard to enforce "around the pylons" in 2 pole. Our race officials do verbally encourage a pilot to at least get back over on which ever side of pylon centerline they should be on after they "made the distance" and didn't go round the pylon. We only had two "head on midairs" last year for 8 events in Q-25. Were you part of the Q-25 / Club 40 Challenge race in Waco, TX. in 2008? If so it's good to hear from you again and I'm glad to see you are working so hard to promote pylon racing somewhere else around the country. I have been following your post in several of the other race classes. Keep up your hard work, it sounds like it's starting to pay off. Gene
