RE: YS 63S - Owners Final Needle Settings
All fixed. Fuel was the major contributor to poor running and tuning. The Ys 63s is working great now.

RE: YS 63S - Owners Final Needle Settings
Thanks Dar. I do run short flights and the 7oz is the only tank that fits. I followed the break in instructions at 2.5 turns out HSNV and 1 turn out on LSNV. I ran two tanks this way at low rpm (4-5k). After which I started to tune. Following Troy Newmans instructions of the YS forums: I peaked the top at 11,100 and backed it off to 10,700. I then dropped the Rpm's to 4k and watched what happened over the next 30 secs. First off the engine surges to 5k and then back to 4 then up again (up down up down) - after 45 secs - 1 min or so, the engine starts bogging down and eventually quits at 1/4 throttle. Setting the LSNV was ok, It will idle at 1900 to 2000 rpm indefinately - Although if I run it up to mid or full throttle and then back down to sit at idle, it actually drops to 1600-1700 and half the time it quits. This is the part that bothers me the most - I will not fly like this...!!! I cannot get it to sit at 4k for any length of time (past 45 secs) - Does that man the reg is not set correctly? After sitting at 4-5k for a while, it also devlops many bubble in the reg to carb line (dark blue) line. But I have absolutely no bubbles in the tank to reg fuel line. The problem seems to be with tuning, but I have been up and back and up again across the needle ranges and seem to come to the same problem: I will get the idle just fine at 2k. perfect. it sits there no prob. if I run it up to mid or full throttle, and then drop it back to idle (2k from before) it acutally drops to 1600-1700 ish before recovering back to 2000. Sometimes it even quits when doing this - BTW I am moving the throttle somewhat slowly aswell up and down. Argh...!!! the joys of a YS i guess... HELP...!!! BTW this is a new engine. HELP HELP HELP - what am I doing wrong...!!

RE: Electric Setup Check for Noob
ORIGINAL: lejongleur Yes, but bear in mind that the 14x7 prop recommendation is intended for a 3S pack, where the power used is 9/16 of the 4S power (so 600 watts on a 4S would give 600*(3*3/4*4) = 337.5 watts, with the same prop on a 3S.)
Ok.Thanks that is great information. Cheers. Thanks for all your help

RE: Electric Setup Check for Noob
Thanks Chris. I will keep an eye on the throttle managment when the battery is fresh... Motor seems to be handling the setup just fine, it has never gotten very warm. I will play close attn to it, and maybe even try a smaller prop. I would hate to think of the damage I would if I tried a 14x7 like the suggested prop sizes

Electric Setup Check for Noob
Here is the setup - I am a Noob to Electrics but after reading, reading reading I am geting the hang of it. 770RPM/V Brushless Outrunner from RC smart (38A max, 20V Max, 420 watt @ 11.1V) recommended prop 12x7 - 14x8 80 AMP ESC - RC Smart (6-30V, 80A continuous, Max 90A/12s) 4S1P 20C 2200maH 14.8V Zippy Flightmax Lipo I am currently running a 12x6 Electric APC prop and through my Wattmeter I am pulling 43 Amps at full throttle - with a 12x8 I am pulling over 50 A...!! I flew three flights with the 12x6 and after the flight, the motor esc and battery were quite cool to the touch - warm maybe, but by no means HOT..!! although I never really flew full throttle but only for 10-20 seconds at a time. Will I be ok with this setup - Thanks in advance for all your help...!! These forums have helped me learn alot very quickly.

RE: Is my Saito 115 timing out..?? After rebuild.
Guys. Stripped the engine down again, pulled off the cam cover and slid in a piece of scrap plastic cut to fit the outside gears closest to the cam cover - worked a treat and looks like the timing is now spot on. Cannot thank you all enough for the great tip. Cheers.

RE: Is my Saito 115 timing out..?? After rebuild.
A picture is worth a thousand words... Thanks for the tip about the business card/plastic. I will do that....!!! Cheers
ORIGINAL: LaCerne Got this from Clarence Lee, through a friend. I used some thin plastic from a sheet I had and cut a piece to slide in and hold the gear in place. I think Clarence used a business card cut to fit, then put the gear the crankcase and slide the card or plastic out. A couple of pics I took a while back. Good Luck!
Is my Saito 115 timing out..?? After rebuild.
After rebuilding my Saito 115 for a bent crank that "Flyboy Dave" has straightened (major shout out...Many thanks Dave...) , I have it reassembled and have it running. It seems to be all working great, running at 5 turns out on the high speed needle for a few tanks to let everything get settled again. My question is this ->>> I followed all the instructions I could read about setting the cam at BDC when the piston is at TDC - but am still not 100% positive that the gears didn't move while I was lowering the cam housing onto the crank case... Would the engine run if the timing was 1 tooth off..?? I seem to be able to run up to 7500 rpm (before leaning) and it was running smoothly ...!!! How can one tell from a running engine if the timing is 1 tooth off either way...??? Thanks in advance. Simon

RE: Great Planes Reactor GP/EP 3D ARF .46-.70
Well she flew, and flew great. Had a prob with the stock spinner so will be replacing that with an aluminium one...!! Had some gunk in the carb on the Saito 82 - stripped that down at the field and back flushed it - thanks to my good buddies at the field - she ran beautifully after that...!!!! 7 flights on the maiden day - geez I was tired. This plane is a dream to land - so soft and gentle compared to my TF P-51.. Gonna set up next time for 3D throws on the high rates, and see what she will do. I def had a lot of fun flying on Sunday... Cheers

Hey Dave, mailed the crankcase today with two sets of bearings - thanks for all of your help. You should recieve it on wed or thurs. Looks like a 1-2mm bend but I am sure you will see that... Cheers mate...! Simon[;)]

RE: Great Planes Reactor GP/EP 3D ARF .46-.70
SO I thought I would share the pics of my newly built Reactor - Saito 82 - 14x4W - Hitec 425 Rudder/Elevator - Hitec 225BB Ailerons - Remote glow starter - inline fuel filler - 90 degree elbow on the muffler almost hides it in the cowl. I went with larger servos in the tail for a little ballast (because of all the gear up front), and low and behold the plane actually balances exactly on - 4.75 inches - I couldn't believe my eyes when I set it up to balance and it was darn near perfect...!! NO ADDITIONAL BALAST NEEDED Anybody else see the same results - ??? FYI - In the last 3 pics you can see the fuel filler plug - and the remote glow wire....!! Who likes the install?

RE: Bent crank ? I'll fix it for free.
FBD. Sorry for not reading all of the earlier posts (you don't take whole engines apart..!!!) - I am new to this forum but learning a ton along the way. I will strip down the engine to the parts you need - crank, flywheel, case and main bearings. I may have to post back with questions on how to get it apart since I am really not sure how to take the piston and rod out...!! I have taken the head off, removed and replaced the valves, removed and replaced the pushords and covers - and got it running again...!!! - so I hope I have the mechanical know how to strip the engine down to the way you need it to work on the crank.. Can you PM me your address....?? Sorry for being a newbie forum user... [:(] THANKS Simon

RE: Bent crank ? I'll fix it for free.
Dave. This surely is a great thing you are doing here.... Great stuff...!!! I dumped my Saito 115 into a Toro Mower at our field. :( Probably could have landed it anywhere else but right smack in the middle of the runway and she would have faired better.... andyways, busted the pushrods and cracked the jug in half. Got all those pieces replaced, set the valve rockers and fired it up. Well now I realize its got a 1-2 mm wobble in the crank... Still actually ran ok which suprised me... Would be willing to send you some cash if you could get her straightened out. I don't exactly have all the tools to break down the bottom end. Can I send you the whole engine?? Along with some greenbacks...!!! thanks alot. Simon..

Saito 115 Bent Crank ??
Recently crashed my Saito 115 - cracked the head and bent the pushrods. Replaced the jug, pushrods, covers seals got it fired up, but now I have about a 1 or 2 mm wobble in the crank. Should I tear this engine down and try to get the crank straightened - or buy a new one?? Would one also replace the bearings while the engine is apart?? BTW - the engine runs and idles ok - even with the bent crank - Haven't tried it under full power yet, but did get it up to about 4-5k for 10 mins or so... What does one do??? Cheers [:D]
