RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
ORIGINAL: abufletcher With the exhaust painted and the overhead water pipe at least partially finished, it's starting to look like a real engine. There are still a couple details that I can't figure out. I know that there is some plumbing on the rear that connects the water system to the Hazet radiators. But I don't know where the small pipe on the "filling cap" went. It looks like it goes up to the top wing.
Hi Don, please let me see what you mean. What you need, I will search in the construction drawings. Nice day,...Matz By the way,...good job.
ORIGINAL: abufletcher [What color were the steel exhausts after use? I would imagine that they had a "burnt" look.
At the time, for the exhaust there was not fire-resistant paint, and the exhaust has only one thing to do. Today, also the exhaust increases the performance. The steel sheet was usually oiled and then burned, there are various methods, we say "brünieren". Have a good time,...Matz By the way, casting the parts with the aluminium resin.
ORIGINAL: abufletcher I sure wish I could see these exhaust being made. Were they hammered out by hand? Were they punched out on a press?
Don, the exhaust was pressed into 2 half-shells and welded with oxy-acetylene. The material was 2 mm sheet steel, sometimes also from 2.5 mm. The exhaust was not painted. I hope it help you. Matz

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
The Voisin model had a wingspan of 210 centimeters. Yes it's the color of the old coverite. It was difficult to produce because it was a "one-sided covered wing". First I sewn the fabric complete and then installed each rib into the pockets.

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
ORIGINAL: abufletcher By the way, what do you think about the color of the "bamboo" silk? It looks to me very similar to the fabric sample you have.
It is difficult for me to make a judgment. By the monitor and through various printers I can not say exactly whether it looks like this. By the way. Just send me a piece of your pattern and I put it on the original albatross wing. At the end of this month the albatross flies again and I could do it.

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
Yes Don, it's a "Hazet Kühler". I have one construction drawing of the Hazet Radiator included the Fittings of my "Motorwagen" documents. But I saw, you have also a drawing of the Hazet. Today, I was in my workshop and I cut a pice of the German tissue, which is produced after the original documents. Matz

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
Hi Don, I've got a few photos of the only remaining original albatros that I know, ....she is standing in Austria. It's a B - type, but it doesn't matter because the radiators are the same and original. The machine is in original state and there is also the most original blueprint sets of the Albatros aircrafts. I also have for you a cut of the wing tissue, so it was in 1917. In the other picture you can see the same albatross wing in the sun and now you can see as it is transparent. All pictures are made by my friend Thomas Genth ( source and copyright: Thomas Genth). greetings Matz

Yes it's true, but you can also buy the engine almost ready ( 90%) for 1700 € from him, there is no problem. I know him, it's a good guy.

Don, more I can not help you. We work on the full size aircraft with the old color panels and documents. If you would build larger models, I'd say do it with thin linen. greetings matz

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
The clou makes the coverite "Matt" and gives him the structur (paint stripes). I've for you here's a real piece of a fokker with coloring. Your question. No, I work with the "old" coverite and not with the new tissue.

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
Therefore we use for the scale models only Coverite. After the covering I paint it with the clou dope. The wide of the paint brush was normaly 6 cm in the german "Fliegerstaffel", so you have the lines and the typical schematic. If I put my coverite wings next to the original machine of us, then I have 95% of the coloring. And by the way Don, many years ago I've built scale pioneer models for the EM and the most models was finished with the coverite, dope and a little coloring of the clou colors. Matz

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
zitat / source Tony Clark practical scale: CLOU Clear Dope This dope is ideal for Oldtimers, it gives a sort of half matt finish that looks absolutely realistic. This Clou Dope can be painted over with any type of the usual paints employed for models. Clou dope is proof against petrol and oil and this includes BEL RAY MC-H1R. We recommend this. Clou dope for our Cap 21 to cover and prime the Balsa before the two component paint finish. For painting our Sopwith Pup and the Tiger Moth we add 5-10% of the mixing colour from the two-component acrylic car paint, this is has the advantage of a very light finish, we use acetone with retarder for thinners.
