RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
Well I maidened mine and everything went fine. Can't be happier with my selection of edf unit! Sadly on the second flight we lost all power after 3 1/2 minutes because we were flying it all the time at 1/2 - 3/4 of power and we landed in the rough. To our amazement the plane came down level all the time. When I inspected a wing got a little T shape crack and some former damage in the front strut and right wing. As I type the paint is drying and all formers were glued, should be flying this weekend. I will turn off the voltage cut off from the ESC (our suspect of the power loss). Besides that planes flew awesome and with plenty of power and given the proven fact that it wont drop a wing no matter how slow it flies that gives me an extra piece of mind. With throttle management and once the batteries are broken in we should get better flying times.

Mine still in the building process and I noticed a bump in the same area you mention. I need to take a closer look to see what's the deal. Specially if is like that now I know after a couple landings it will start cracking the paint. I believe is the landing gear formers pushing the fiberglass a little bit. Is more noticeable in the right wing. As a precaution I will reinforce the area anyway.

Got mine today!![:D][:D][:D] I guess mine is the latest version. The ducting is 120mm diameter to accommodate the new larger diameter EDF units. I ordered a Schuebeler DS-77-6745-700 (120mm) and it fits like a globe. I'll post a link to the build thread soon.

11K???? That's some wicked power!! The numbers I posted were from the Schuebeler test lists, but I know the like to play conservatively. Man post some video once you start flying it.

RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
ORIGINAL: k_sonn
ORIGINAL: R_Belluomini Kirk a few wraps of carbon tow should give it enough strength for a inlet. If not the .020'' should do the trick with a wrap of carbon tow. Thanks for the link
Hi Bob, Normally, I would agree with you but the 700kv version of the DS-77 and DS-94 HST fans move an amazing amount of air for there size, so I'm not so sure carbon fiber tow would be enough. These fans take things to the next level +1. A simple comparison of the numbers can show that. Based on the reported numbers of the Dynamax with the 1915 motor, it's producing 15 pounds of thrust. You would need two of those to be equal to the amount of thrust of the 700kv DS-94 or 1.75 of those to produce the thrust of the 700kv DS-77. That's a very large amount of air being moved. Everything we normally do to strengthen the intake ducting, needs to be rethught with the HST fans. You'll get a chance to see them perfor m at E-Jets. Kirk
To give you a clearer idea. The DS-77-6745-700 put out 25.2 pounds of thrust at 14S. The DS-94-6745-700 puts out 29.2 pounds of thrust at 14S. The watts are 8600 for the 77 and 9800 for the 94. Pretty incredible numbers for an EDF!!

RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
I found out that Aerospace Composites has carbon fiber sleeves in different diameters and it can expand and shrink as needed which makes creating custom ducting a breeze. You just need to make a foam plug do the ducting and then melt the foam with acetone or something similar. Here's the link, https://www.acpsales.com/Carbon-Fiber-Tapes-and-Sleeves.html Nice job in the ducting! My unit (DS-77-6745-700) should be here in 2 weeks from now. Can't wait to start assembling my plane.

Thanks for the picture Wearypanda. Yes it a weird failure speacially with the big piece of fiberglass that came out. But both of the theories are right either was week at that spot or it was crack from the hit of the landing or perhaphs both. I guess the best thing to do is reinforce the area.

RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
I have a question for the owners of this jet. Does the wing bolts sit against the fiberglass? Like screw, washer, fiberglass and then the wing on the other side? I used to own a Comp-Arf and they always put a wood former or a wood washer between the screw's washer and the fiberglass to reduce the sheer effect of the screw washer. I will have one of these planes delivered to me in a couple of weeks and I find this information really helpful. Thanks for sharing it. Sorry that you lost your plane due to a failure!

I only use Lado E-Retracs in my planes. Hastle free and long life time. 333RS should be fine for 5mm wire struts. If you're using 1/2 struts then the RS999 is the ones you need.

RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
Here are the weights. Some of them are really conservative (fuselage weight, wiring). Thrust from one unit to the other @ 12S is similar, but at 14S I don't have any numbers from Stu and that's where the Schuebeler get really awesome power.

RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
I have been analyzing the data supplied by Mike today and from all the version the one I'm leaning towards is the DS-77-6745-700 and I explain why. From the numbers bellow the one that pops right away is the performance increase from 12S to 14S. While at 12 it has a incredible 19.8 pounds of thrust and 5900W with a efficiency of 72%. If put in 14S set up it gains 5.4 pounds of thrust more. As right now I'm analyzing the weight penalties not for the fan (that's 3.36oz or 95 grams) but from the battery increase. I need to do a spreadsheet with the Schuebeler Lipo weights, Fan unit, etc. to determine the benefits of 14S vs 12s (Power vs weight). If I can stay below 19-20. I will take the plunge. And who knows maybe I can get a little discount if I end up ordering the DS-77-6745-700 and 6 7S 6300 battery packs. That's a hell of a buy anyway you look at it![:D] I will crunch the numbers and let you know. Here are the DS-77-6745-700 numbers. Cell count: 12 Voltage: 44.4 Amps: 134 Thrust: 19.8 Exhaust Speed: 315.0 Efficiency: 72 Speed RPM: 28000 Power Watts: 5950 Cell count: 13 Voltage: 48.1 Amps: 150 Thrust: 22.5 Exhaust Speed: 337.9 Efficiency: 72 Speed RPM: 29000 Power Watts: 7215 Cell count: 14 Voltage: 51.8 Amps: 167 Thrust: 25.2 Exhaust Speed: 360.9 Efficiency: 71 Speed RPM: 31000 Power Watts: 8651

RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
The stock inlets radius as per Feibao measurements to the center of the lip is 50mm which gives a inlet area of 7,850mm^2. Which is kind of small for a 120mm unit. The wingspan of the plane is 1440mm (57.750) and length is 1900mm (74.750). The exhaust outlet is 73.43mm (2.812") but that is from the turbine pipe measurements. I have seen the pictures of the area and the former that holds it in place can be enlarged, removed or replace for something larger. Mike is talking to Daniel for options and Stu is also looking for a Neu 1527/1.5y for testing in his newer 120mm unit. Right now I'm down to those 2 companies, it will be a mather of plusses and minusses because I can't go wrong with neither of them. Excellent guys and they are straightforward persons. If something will not work they will be the first to say it. And FSA is not a big issue at all because I can re-do the fuselage and fan inlets as large as needed. Thanks for the advise!

RE: Skymaster L-39 Assembly and Scheme Change
I want to see the final outcome of this build. I ordered a FeiBao L-39 (Edf version) and have been talking to Mike Warren to see which fan version would benefit my application. Also been talking to other respected EDF builder from Down Under (no name mention since this is a Schuebeler thread and I respect that[:D]) and I will decide between those 2 units. So far the Schuebeler numbers look more appealing but unit weight is also a decisive factor. That's kind the only thing I would love this unit to be a little lighter a 2-2.4 pounds. That would be awesome considering the power it produces. Let's see what is Daniel's input for my application. Good luck with your build!

RE: Gotta love the Chinese Copy Factories....
We all know that for every item produced somewhere else there's a chinese copy. It's just business, they know there's a demand for the item and if it offered at a cheaper price there's potential buyers. Quality might not be the same as the original but sale price will play the final role in the decision. Let's be honest here if you can find a decent quality item at a really good price will you buy it or will you pay higher (most of time 20-30% more) for the same item when you know you can get it cheaper and address the design flaws and save some $$ in the process. The way I see it the US has fail in a trap that they want an item build by someone else at a cheaper price just to become the middle man and make more profit from the transaction. Guess what the chinese has figured out was going on and they're trying to cut the middle man. So basically you can buy anything straight from the manufacturer in china and save the middle man's pay cut. We as americans need to get things in perspective and start to manufacture goods in the good USA at an affordable prices to get back in track. Back in the day people knew that all products made in the USA were quality items, now a day people knows they came from china and the quality ones get the label made in the USA. Just my 2 cents. Bash me if you want but deep down we all know is the truth wether we like it or not!

RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
Can someone of the owners of this plane double check the available space for an EDF unit. Mine is been manufactured right now. I'm planing on buying a XPS Dynamax (127mm) and from the pictures I can see that there's enough space on the sides. Can't tell up or down because there's formers in that area. I know the King Tech 80 measure 95.5mm diameter so if someone can take a look underneath the turbine and see if there's at least 1/2 - 3/4" of space available I will appreciate the information. Thanks!

After following this thread for a couple of years since 08 I finally decided to buy one. I will install either a Stumax 100-45 EDF with 12S or maybe go all out with a XPS Dynamax and 12-14S. Is a no rush project so when the plane finally arrive by summer I will see what would fit and start getting the components. Retracts will be from Lado, Savox servos, CC ESC and 5000 Mah batteries. I'm planing to do a build thread for those considering switching to EDF units. Gamalier.

RE: seagull edge 540 .60-.91 question!
Well I just put one of this planes together with an Zenoah 20cc that I had lying in my carport for the las 1.5 yrs. To get more horsepower I put in a tuned pipe and header. Vertical climb is awesome, speed great and even hangs from the prop. I'm swinging a 15x9 at 9,400 RPM and I will try a 16x6. It's incredible the amount of power this little engine puts out with a pipe. I read about the engine HP increase in Tony Clark's website, according to them it said that with a pipe there's an increase of 40%. The engine has 1.7 stock-with the increase 40% increase now is running around 2.8HP which is not bad for a 20cc. Now i can imagine a DLE 20 under the same conditions! Well I will found soon a friend of mine doing the same with the 64" Seagull Edge and a DLE 20. Stay tunned!!

RE: Best Place to Buy a DLE
I personally bought a DLE 55 from Razor Hobbies in TX before DLE established the firm pricing policy (Less than $330). I bought another from TBM, I had bought stuff from IBCINYOU, Chief Aircraft and other small dealers. When it comes to engines all come from the same CNC the problem might be QC at the time of inspection. By the amounts of engines being produced there's alway the probability of getting a sour apple, but it will also depend on how the situation is address by both parties. Like someone said dealers can't please everybody. There some personality clashes sometimes. I called once VV and talked to Jody and he was really helpful, another time he was the opposite. That's why I don't rely on other persons to do my stuff. If I don't know about something I will look for the info I need and do it myself. Like a friend of my says "I do all my stunts"

RE: Extra 300 50cc scratchbuilt
Well picture wise it seems like i didn't achieve too much today but it was a really productive day. I started the day by roughly sanding the sheeted areas (Turtle deck, belly pan and the wing I'm working on). Then I started to cut my servo tray for the wings. After that I finished the sheeting of the bottom of the left wing. Also finished the cutting of the lightening hole in the right wing rib set. I hope to have another productive day tomorrow. By the way in the picture of the file and the pencil wrapped in sanding paper those were the 2 things I used to shape the slot in the servo tray after cutting it roughly with a Rotozip rotary tool. Pretty simple and the results are really good. As a matter of fact all the round holes you see thru the entire built were sanded by covering something of the same diameter or close enough with sand paper. Sometimes it takes a while to find a can or something round of the proper size.
