Banana Hobby's large foam warbirds
Has anyone else seen or bought one of these large foam war birds from Banana Hobby? I purchased one of the Camo colored A-1 Skyraiders that has a 63" WS and comes with main and tail wheel all electric retracts, power operated fuse dive brakes, motor, 70 amp speed control that already has the deans connector installed, scale flying four bladed prop and hub assembly, scale looking wheels and main gear strut doors. It took about five hours to assemble and set the radio up. Waiting on the 3300ma 4S 20C batteries to arrive so I can fly it. The cost was $189.00 + shipping. The videos of their war birds flying are impressive so I thought I would give them a try. They even have larger all foam aircraft in the giant scale range including a 79" Corsair with power operating folding wings and nav lights with all the gear doors! Course these cost more. Any way anyone else tried one of these? They have all types of aircraft encluding DF jets of diferent sizes. Even Montoya of Nascar fame is seen in one of their adds. I airbrushed the exhaust smoke and gun powder residue, and plan on really weathering it if flights all go well. Here is their web site link http://www.bananahobby.com/?_kk=electric%20fighter%20RC%20jets&_kt=98fd36b3-660e-431f-80fa-2e8602641705&gclid=COLtxczx868CFbMEQAodrCALVg

RE: Is Darryll of Sierra back on deck yet??
I to talked with Darrel this weekend at Toledo and he is still recouperating but is back to work. I am glad to see that. He did say a few things about his wife and she is getting better also. Darrel has always had my back when I needed something and has given me quick turn arounds for repairs as well. I'm glad to see him up and around. God Speed my friend.

RE: Byron Originals Bonanza Thread & More
As a professional Byron builder for many years I had the pleasure to build many of th boron line including the A36 Bonanza, and I have the Barron Twin that I fly myself on twin .40s. It flies like it is on rails. It has been to long ago that I built the Bonanza to give any helpful hints. You can glass the wings if you want, but use 2 oz. cloth instead of the .75 oz. cloth most use for sheeted surfaces. The softer foam under the thin glass can cause it to puncture when handling it. Ask me how I know that eh? Good luck with the plane. Byron was the Cadilac of model aviation during its time. I always liked their complete kit concept. I still have three of their models. F-16, Barron twin, Staggerwing Beech. I feel fortunate to have participated in thier fly-ins years ago. Byron really knew how to throw a party. Gary Webb

RE: *** BYRON T-28 build ***
I would throw that away.....I did and replaced it with a U.P.1 valve. You can reach them at 905-842-1703 or Google them. United Precision products. They are in canada. The valve lets you time the speed of the retract as well as the doors. I have used their products for many years

RE: Byron/Ironbay T-28
They can be be very difficult to install. You have to have the paitience of Job to just move them around untill they fall in. I turned the air in my shop blue every time I reinstalled them LOL. They will go in, just fanagle them around. Calling them some choice words seemed to help for me hehehehehehhe

I do not believe that mold line in the fuse is supposed to be used as a panel line. I filled mine in and left the top smooth. Only the cowl has the panel line.

RE: Byron/Ironbay T-28
Now the fun begins!!!!! I was skeptical that he would deliver I must admit. I'm glad John has been able to keep the Iron-Bay program alive and well. You have just purchased one of the best flying warbirds ever. Have fun building and flying your new T-28. Mine came out perfectly balanced without having to move anything around. Even Frank Noll said it was oine of the best war birds he had ever flown at the time. He put the maiden flight on mine a few years back. They fly like a very large trainer. Course the T-28 was a trainer LOL. If you need documentation I have a book on T-28s that is no longer in print, and I used Dave Platts drawings for panel lines and rivits to do mine. Gary

WOW, been away from the forums for a short time and saw this. I have known Darryl for many years and have many of his products in my aircraft. He has been a good friend in the hobby and I always was happpy to see him at different events over the years. I too ride motorcycles and by the grace of God have not had an accident like this. I truly wish him and his wife a speedy recovery and Darryl get back up on that horse as soon as you can my friend. Hope to see you soon. I also hope the driver of the other vehicle that was drunk gets his due. Regards, Gary Webb

Cloud master, a friend has this engine in a 35# Corsair with a 96" wingspan and it flies it with authority. I think it will make this T-28 sing at half throttle.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I have been flying mine now for over six years. Mine was one of the first produced. I have always balanced mine at the recommended CG with a 5-10 degree nose down angle. Nose heavy war birds fly better and will ground loop less. They will be more stable in the air in formations also and track more like a full scale model through scale manuvers. Good luck with your Mustang and do not forget to modify the wing as seen on page 38 in this thread. Gary

RE: Byron corsair help needed!
I would go with the Top Flight GS canopy. It should be close enough for the Byron model. They are almost the exact size.

RE: Are all Top Flite warbirds stand off scale?
Larry, I could not have said it better. I to have judged both static and flight for the Masters, NATS, FAI, and flight judge at Top gun currently. Each contests rules vary on what is required for documentation, how close the judges can get to your model, and what flight manuvers are required. Read the rules first and get with someone who has already participated in that contest and get thier advice to help you compete successfully. Good luck to you. Regards, Gary Webb

RE: Trailers Torsion bar suspension VS Leaf spring
I have been pulling a 12X6 cargo trailer since 1999 with the torsion bar suspension and carries a 3500# rating. It never has had more than 500-600 pounds in it above the sheving and associated cubbards while hauling giat scale models, tools and support equipment and fuel. Very little bouncing. It has been on trips of over 2500 miles with no problems. When I started looking for a trailer I to was puzzled with which way to go. I was told by many that already had trailers to go with the torsion type suspension due to there is less bounce when lightly loaded. Also The recommended tire pressure is 50#s and I run around 48#s to make them a little softer. I have also hauled three motorcycles in it to Daytona, FL from Ohio with no problems. Also make sure you get a side door installed. You will really regret it if you do not. I opted for the two side hinged doors instead of the ramp door also because the ramp door at fly-ins can be a pain sometimes. My trailer cost $2600.00 new in '99 and it still looks good. I clean it often and repaint the trailer tongue about every other year to keep it looking nice. Make sure the top of the trailer is made from one piece of aluminum to keep from leaking over time. My trailer has never leaked. I also had a crank open roof vent installed also. I sprayed undercoating on the bottom of the wood floor and frame when I first bought it and it still looks new. I have pulled this trailer with four vehicles. I am now pulling it with a 2007 Buick Rendesvous with V6 power and get about 17-19 mpg when pulling it. I get about 26-27 without it. Gary Webb

RE: Iron Bay T-28 CG range ?
Sir, My T-28 came out balanced perfectly ( even a blind squirel finds a nut now and again) with no added weight and it flies so well at the reccomended CG, I would not even think of moving it. Moving it forward will tend to put more weight on the nose wheel and should be avoided in my opinion. My model has a 78cc twin on glow and pulls the plane with athority. The only problem Iv'e had is the nose wheel colasping on take off roll and had to slightly modify the links to get more over center on the lock mech. This by far is the easiest war bird I have ever flown. Good luck with yours. Gary

RE: Byron B-17
I was there and helped man the flight line a few years. Yes there was a daily or weekly charge depending on how long you planned to stay. This was an IMAA fly-in along with the Striking Back show everyday. You paid for a grandstand seat that was yours all day so you could go wander around all the vendor tents and get something to eat and your seat would be there when you got back. Most of us all camped out at the site due to there were very few if any hotels close. I always flew my priviate plane to the show with some of my friends so I did not take an airplane to fly so I just worked the flight line. Some of the guys would allow me to fly their planes so I did get some stick time. Byron also had a full scale airshow along with the models. Leo Laudenslauger and Jimmy Franklin both signed my pilots log book during the 1990 show. Byron even had enough pull to have military jet fly overs. I to do not think something like this will ever happen again soon. I am so glad that I had the resources to allow this modeler to attend Byrons fly-ins.

Those are real neat, but that would add alot of weight to a model. I have seen these before but yet to witness any flying successfully in an aircraft for very long. I hope it works out for them.

RE: Byron Originals Ryan ST-A
I built one about 15 years ago for one of my customers. It had a Supertiger 2500 in the nose. The wings and tail feathers were glassed and painted and the plane flew like a larger Sig Astro Hog. Very pattern like. Great airplane. I would highly reccomend you build and enjoy this plane. They are very rare and were a great kit and flying model. I would install one of the new gas engines in it now. I personally still have three Byron models, F-16, Beech Baron, and a Staggerwing Beech. All great flyers. Gary Webb

RE: byron brakes
I have a set on my Byron T-28 also. Make sure you put springs at both ends of the brake shoes so they pull back from the hub when you release the air pressure. I had problems with them sticking when only one spring. I went to a local hardware store and bought springs simular to the ones that came with them. Gary

RE: Byron Original
The J-3 Cub was an ARF they began to sell just befoe they quit making kits. When Byrons children took over his business interests, they divested the model buisness out of no intrest in that buisness. They still sell fuel. Yes all the tooling and the foam manufacturing system for the model parts were sold to John, owner of Iron bay models.

RE: Byron P51
I think you will finf the G62 way over kill for that model. A good 50 cc engine will make it blazing fast. Also the plane will probably come out way nose heavy. That plane was designed around a 45cc engine both with prop reduction drive and with out.
