RE: Life battery's
I am also going LiFe this spring, after what I consider to be unsatisfactory life span of NiMh packs. My 'old technology' NiCd's last longer than the newer NiMh's, and I definitely notice the self discharge thing. I have several 'name brand' NiMh packs only 2 years old that are done...with not that much flying on them. The buzz out there seems to be that the LiFe packs have a much better shelf life and minimal self discharge, so I'm in. Lets see how these work...

RE: futaba 8fg super for jet turbine flying?
There are a couple of slow functions I have found on my 8FG Super. I have one running flaperons slowly in flaps up/down...really nice. There is also something on throttle that I believe I saw, but it does not apply to my gasser and glow kites so I haven't used it. I'm new to this radio but so far it's very nice.

RE: New OS 33cc Gasser..any reports yet?
Yikes! More poor instructions. Well I suppose we are all used to this by now, but for the life of me, I can't understand why the Pacific Rim manufacturers won't and don't simply have a decent translation done by someone. Investing all that $ and effort into manufacturing and then putting the very rough instructions in the package is a serious annoyance to many in this hobby, especially the newer modellers. Hats off to Hangar 9 and Great Planes for doing this, but as for the rest, pretty ugly. In this case, dangerous!

RE: New OS 33cc Gasser..any reports yet?
Thanks folks. Sounds like a starter is key to this one. So lemme get this straight: The motor costs a hundred bucks more than DLE, PTE, etc, and then we get to spend another hundred(?) on a hi torque starter package. This we do for the privilege of buying OS? I LOVE my OS glow engines and have owned many. But this is getting out of hand, IMHO. Paying $500 for a $300 engine is pretty rough! Especially with the easy operating with the other ones. I think I'll advise against this package until there's a better justification for paying this much just to get a balky starting engine. I agree that starters are a total pain on larger engines.

RE: DLE 30 carb rotation
Haven't had a look inside my DLE30 yet but I can't imagine being able to turn the jug 90 degrees would work. Carb yes. Jug, No. Ports and passages aren't going to line up, to my way of thinking. ...not that I've looked yet...still in the airplane and working well! GaryR.

RE: multiple throttle servo failures
The guys here talked me into a good digital servo for throttle control on my first gasser...30CC Sbach. I popped in the HiTech HS5485HB on 6V battery, well back in the fuse with good old Golden Rod plastic pushrod and sheath plus 2-56 ball end links. Working fine after one heavy summer of flying...maybe 300 flights? The concensus here is use a longer linkage and make it vibration-absorbing. Seems to be working really well for me, while others with more solid/shorter linkages are having their troubles. I think there's something to this long and softer linkage idea. It's working for me. Good luck.

RE: Goldwing SBACH 30cc
I built a competitor to this...Slipstream 30cc Sbach 342, with the DLE30. Came out at 11.4 lbs, and was tail heavy with two rear ele. servos and linkage, etc. I eventually had to give up flying it tail heavy. Way too pitchy. Added 2 strips of little tire weights to the front of the motor box...probably 3-4 ounces, and it made a world of difference. Performance is excellent with the Xoar 19 x8 Beechwood prop for IMAC stuff. Vertical lines are excellent. I don't think a max weight of 12 lbs. will be a problem with the DLE30...it's a real stump puller when broken in and tuned up. Out-pulls my buddy's beautiful Syssa 30...much nicer looking motor! Enjoy your build!

RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
Just a comment on Escapade 40 and 60 size ARFS: Many Escapade 40's around the area here. Great sport flyer. Good pricing. FAST with OS46's. That's plenty! OS55 would drop right in if you are experienced...would be unlimited vertical. Flight characteristics seem good, but it's a small size and bumps around some in the wind. The new 60 size Escapade is a MUCH larger airframe, and it is a totally different feel. My buddy put one up this year with a big OS95 2-stroke on it and it's a true delight. The 60 size flies VERY smoothly and very stable...point and shoot, like an IMAC bird. I was quite surprised by it's great handling when I tried it out. Much easier to fly than the 40 size, which I find to be a bit nervous... \ Good luck with your project.

RE: DLE 30 dies when upright
Just do as JeoJody says and you'll be fine. He's THE MAN: did a ton of development on this engine with the mfgrs, etc. My DLE30 v2 gave me a few deadsticks too while breaking in and getting settings right. NGK plug is a MUST. The stock DLE plug has crappy ceramics and might come apart internally causing damage, so just round-file it. Stihl oil is great. Your breather line to the fuse is good. I had to do it on mine too because of rich flameouts on inverted and outside manoeuvers...sort of sounds like your situation. After 2 or 3 gallons through mine, I have a super running engine....very strong! Using Xoar 19 x8 for IMAC stuff. 18x10 is faster if you do Warbirds. Oh, and it's in a Sbach...cowled inverted setup. Pretty typical.

RE: DLE30 experiences please
Thanks Nute12. Appreciate the comment on the ca hinges... I'll keep a sharp eye on this. I've added full length ultrakote clear strips on top and bottom sides of all control surface gaps, to seal gaps and add a little more hinge material. Seems to work well.

RE: DLE30 experiences please
OK so spring is sprung, the grass is rising, and the Sbach/DLE30 combo maidened this monday without incident. Came in at 11.4 lbs, and cg was a bit rearward. I found my Slipstream version had some flaws, most of which were caught in the build. Watch the location of the ca hinge slots. Mine were not centered. Had to excavate a garmungous hole in the firewall to get the rear carb version mounted, plus 1.25 inch standoffs. Reinforced a bit around the modified motor box and it all seems good at the moment. The DLE rear carb is running very strong after only 5 or 6 tanks through it. I'm about to start leaning in the low end a bit to see if I can clean up the mid range burble some...it's 4-stroking pretty bad there. Top end is set a bit on the rich side of peak rpm. I'm getting 8000 rpm on a Xoar 18 x 8 beech prop. Steady idle 1700 rpm and getting lower. Vertical line is spectacular. Can't wait to get everything trimmed in and start flying some routines. Thanks for the advice, all. Gary.

RE: Adding weight for cg
Good ideas all. The brain trust out there is always amazing. My vote is with MOVING the tail mounted servos to the centre and going pull-pull, or whatever works. I did this on a Yak and it works just beautifully. EXCELLENT result, even though I had to manufacture my own servo trays, supports, etc... The corollary: I also totalled a very nice GP 50 size Extra by having tail servos, and a bunch of weight to compensate. Flew like a brick. Hey, my thumbs, my lazy, etc., so no excuses at all, but it was a brick. I destroyed a perfectly useable airplane by NOT doing the right thing, and moving items forward. I keep a chunk of THAT mess on the shop wall just to remind me not to get lazy! IMHO, adding weight is ALWAYS an absolute very last resort, as it is total loss of performance. MOVE everything to the wing tube area or even farther forward. Make up servo trays, epoxy them in, do the pull-pull if it is possible, etc... Good Luck!

RE: Futaba 8FGA vs Spektrum DX-8
Futaba Fasst is the way to go. This company DOES have a superior 2.4 Tx/Rx link, well proven industrially for years. Simply put, they know what they are doing in 2.4 spread spectrum technology. Failures and unexplained glitches at our field are virtually always Spektrum. Not JR, unless a spektrum receiver is involved. I absolutely love the JR 9 channel and would have it if they linked to Fasst technology like they do in europe (c'mon you N. American distributors...get with the program here!) I don't care about $100 either way on the radio package. The all up price of our kites in the air dwarfs any modest price differences. RELIABILITY is really, really key. Don't get hung up on a programming 'trick' or glitzy features that sell equipment but don't fly your airplane better. Spektrum stuff seems to constantly have a varied collection of glitches, brownouts, lost binds, etc...not to mention a few recalls here and there. No question Spektrum is doing a great job packaging for the BNF entry and interemediate markets...super selection and prices. Can't beat them there. BUT....I constantly hear of little things going on at the field with the Spektrum crowd. The Futaba guys are up there flying, not on the ground fiddling, or collecting pieces. I have both, so I'm not speaking from one side of my mouth. IMHO, for whatever it's worth... RELIABILITY!!!!

RE: Best and Worst Nitro Engine Powered RC Airplanes for Beginners in the Market
Hey gang: I just realized NO ONE has mentioned SIMULATORS. THAT is the best trainer in the world, bar none!!!! This is the missing link to successful flights. Get one and fly it till you can do it in your sleep. Makes a HUGE difference on the field, once you get the white knuckle first flight behind you. At the field, use exponential and get an instructor/buddy box going.

RE: Best and Worst Nitro Engine Powered RC Airplanes for Beginners in the Market
Don't forget the option of knock-off trainers at ridiculously low prices either...NitroPlanes for one offer a number of these. I had the 70" Trainer 60 and it was a puppy with an OS55. Superbly smooth and very easy to fly. The bigger OS55 gave me lots of grunt if I needed it, but was quite fuel efficient at 1/2 throttle where the trainer flew perfectly well. ONE CAUTION: Be prepared to toss the junk linkages and pushrods and replace with decent hardware. Also you need to ALWAYS reglue and hot fuel proof, but that's part of the learning curve too. OK so that adds $20 but you learn by selecting good stuff at the LHS and working out how to hook it all up. Just MHO....I learned to fly on a cobbled up Quickie 500 wing stuck on an old fashioned boxfly fuse...and an ancient Enya35...so a LOT of stuff flys well enough to get the student through the white knuckle stage. I think the KEY to student success is equal parts EXPONENTIAL to get rid of the jitters, and a good instructor with buddy box. At the end of the day, get up there and enjoy the joy of flight!

Hey Franke21m....great looking Yak, man! Thanks for the pics! At that weight, I believe it would be a rocket! Hi there "the Ghost". Hope things 'down under' are well, and thanks for the great measurements! That works out to 15.4 lbs thrust. Sounds not too shabby. How does that fly your 9.9 lb airplane?

RE: DLE30 experiences please
Don't know about the grunt yet....mine won't see air till next spring! But thrust is 18 plus pounds, and the Sbach 30CC from Slipstream (my version) says 11 lbs. weight. So even after I do my fuelproofing and structural enhancements, say 12 lbs and 18 lbs thrust... I dunno, but I think it's good. Anyone else have an opinion on thrust to weight ratio???

RE: DLE30 experiences please
Great info...I agree on adding tri and I also reglue the area with slow dry epoxy, thinned out with methanol...brush on everywhere I can get at a joint. Thanks for confirming I'm not overbuilding...as much as I love the ARF's of today, I just can't break the habit of 'hot fuel proofing' and thereby reinforcing the joints with the epoxy. This time I actually weighed the 'raw' fuse, wings, etc, and will keep track of how many grams/ounces I am adding with the process...I don't think very much! Sbach looks wonderful on the build table. Can't wait to get into this.

Hi Gang: Well, we have had snow in Ottawa Canada already, and I can tell you that flying with skis is quite fun! Not that this has anyting to do with the DLE30 posts, but I'm delighted to hear the maiden went off well and the DLE ran as desired. I had one in my hand today at the LHS...looks quite well made. I think I'm convinced this is the way to go. Many thanks for all the posts everyone. I truly appreciate the advice and experiences. Gary.
