RE: Sad News - Jim Womack
Very sad news. Jim was a great guy, always friendly and in a good mood. I enjoyed getting to catch up with him a bit when he came out to watch the Woodland EF1 race in April. He will be missed. Gary

Actually both cranks are for either Q40 or Q500, they're just different vintages. The one on the left is newer.

Biggest thing I'd worry about is vibration killing them, but I don't see why they wouldn't be great in EF1's.

RE: Telling difference between Nelson Q40 LS & Q40 SS
Agreed, it's a very early SS Q500 engine. Doesn't have the counter-balanced thrust washer, and the prop nut looks like what came on the early engines. Could possibly be AAC, but if it's the original piston/sleeve, it's probably ABC.

Most of my "LS" mufflers aren't engraved as they didn't do that for long. I'm out of town for the weekend and don't have one around to measure, and the differences are hard to describe, but if you post a pic, most people familiar with both could tell.

Bob, I didn't realize you had a name for your planes, I just called them "Runts". If you really wanted to be accurate with the name... "Left Lane Exit" would've been appropriate considering their takeoff characteristics :)

RE: Waiting for the release
From the board members I've talked to, it was pretty much as I said previously. People were bent out of shape with the introduction of the LS engines. The engine situation had stabilized, and the board was looking to keep it that way. I believe they felt the risk of another manufacturer coming in and disrupting the stability with a faster engine outweighed the risk of pissing people off by turning new manufacturers away. Also keep in mind what DK had stated earlier...this rule has actually been in process and around since before any potential new manufacturers announced they were going to try to enter the market. Now...regarding the DKT specifically...25k+ with a 7.4x7.7 prop...VERY impressive. That's MUCH stronger than any Nelson I've owned. I'd venture to say many would by buying the DTK's (such as myself), but we'd likely lose some racers that can't or don't want to purchase new engines...much like when the LS's came out. Would that be good for our sport? That being said, I've purchased some F3D parts from DKT and they are great, as well as their service. I will be buying more from them, and I wish them the best. Like I've said, I don't like the idea of turning any manufacturers away, and would love to see DKT (along with Robbert VanDenBosch's) engines at our races, but I can respect the decision the rules committee has made. I would love to see our AMA events become stronger and have the health to allow the committee to decide that allowing other manufacturers in would be good for the sport.

RE: Waiting for the release
Actually I was planning on it a few years ago, and was the district VP for a bit, but then the economy took a dive, I changed careers and moved out of state, spent another year on travel for work, a year overseas supporting the military, moved to yet another state, and am now finally getting back into racing somewhat regularly, although I'll be lucky to hit more than a handful of races. I'll probably look into getting more involved with the NMPRA in a couple years, but for now I really don't have the time for the additional duties it really requires.

Bill, Out of curiousity, being that you haven't raced in several years, why are you even concerned about what the rules committee decided? Or are you just trying to stir the pot?

RE: Waiting for the release
Bill, You think it's hard to be competitive in F3D? Try F5D. Totally different ballgame. Like I said, I'd rather allow anybody that's willing to invest in the events play, but the rules committee decided otherwise. I can't say I blame them, when the LS's came out, there were people that were willing to tell Henry Nelson to take a hike and just fly Jetts, so there are some that feel one manufacturer would be just fine (as proven with 426). Besides, if either Nelson or Jett leave, it's in the rules to allow another manufacturer in. So in reality there wouldn't be a need to promote F3D, although as one of the few willing to invest the time and $ into it, I wish we could get more F3D racing in the USA. Dave, When you look at the events where the watt limiters are really checked, and you consider they get "flying" starts, they aren't really any faster. In fact, the average times at the last F3D World Champs were faster than the average times at the last F5D World's. [:)] Not to mention, isn't the idea of fuel ingniting over 500 times a second more exciting that some electrons moving around? LOL

RE: Waiting for the release
While I don't believe anybody that wants to support our events by producing products for them should be turned away, I'm sure a lot of the reason for this rule was due to the LS engines being introduced a few years ago. Many people complained because they had just purchased new engines, ect, that were basically obsolete. You'd get the same complaints if a new manufacturer brought out an engine that was 2 seconds faster. It's really a no-win situationf or the contest board. They can either piss people off by allowing any manufactures in, risking a repeat of the LS situation, or they can piss people off by not allowing more manufacturers. I'm just glad I'm not in their shoes.

RE: 426 Props - Gino's Style (What?)
Yes, the "N" series props were the first Q500 props made by APC in about 1994. Jim Allen and I used them for testing and Jim worked with the AMA, including Wayne Yeager and then AMA President Don Lowe, to get them approved because prior to that only wood props were legal, and the AMA was worried about allowing APC's in racing because "they looked scary".

RE: Higher altitude engine setup
I put in quite a few flights on 428, 422, and FAI at about 7500 feet in Mexico City about ten years ago. All three classes ended up with essentially the same setup at used at normal elevations. Yes, the engines made less horsepower, but the props had less air to bite into so it evened out, with RPMs in the same ballpark as at home. Lowering the head seemed to do very little if anything Bob (HighPlains) said, it's not too critical with sport fules The only real difference was takeoff distances were increased, as were turning radius and landing speeds. More recently, I flew a couple Q40's (Nelson LS) at 4300' field elevation a couple years ago, with density altitude around 5000'. They ran just like they did at Florida, Phoenix, and LA with no changes.

RE: EF-1 at Nats
Good points. The class was meant as a "fun" event to attract more racers...whether former racers or new ones. It wasn't meant to be an all out serious racing event. As such, there are several things that were done to help make it easier and cheaper. Sure, a different motor with a 5S Zippy pack may be less than the 4s TP's...but what happens when people decide they want to use 5S TP's? It's instantly more expensive than what we have. Personally I'd rather see the rules allow thinner trailing edges and airfoild tail surfaces. Will that keep me from being interested in having fun, and get me to complain that the event totally misses the boat? Nope, I've still got a Miss Dara kit to build and will have fun with it.

RE: Q40 plane
I remember seeing them. They were Gary Hover Stilletto FAI fuselages that Chip used in the late 90's. Originally they had Gary's molded wing that was used on both his Kaze Formula 1 and the Stilletto. They've long been out of production so finding a wing would be tough, but getting cores made wouldn't be difficult. The planform was pretty simple. I think they were a 56" wingspan (anything 56-58" would be fine) with a straight leading edge, just over 450 square inches of area. I believe the airfoil, at least at the root, was a SD6060, possibly adjusted in thickness slightly to get a 1" thickness. While I think he used a more symetrical airfoil at the tip, I'd just stick with the SD6060 there as well. Another option is to contact Bruce DeChastel at www.bigbruceracing.com and see about getting an original Evo wing (actually either the first or second generation, but not the Evo Next). Either will take a little potting on the fuse to fit correctly, but so would a foam/wood wing. Chip had one airplane at the 2001 World Champs in Australia that was a Stilletto fuselage with one of Bruce's original Evo wings. It was fast but he crashed it in practice before the contest.
