RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Have there been any issues with the supplied engine mounts on the super skybolt? I keep loosing the exhaust off my 91 and it's driving me crazy. I managed to get my hands on a flexi exhaust and mount the pipe under the plane but that broke after one flight where my mate had bent it. There is a lot of flex in the supplied plastic mount, maybe thats causing the problem. Never had exhasuts fall off before.

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Finally leaned of the OS FS 91 today after running her in. Much to my surprise it pulled the plane vertically out of a hover. Slowly I have to admit but still vertically. I was very surprised and pleased. Let my friend fly it and he was also very impressed although he didn't like the high rates I tend to fly with. Question, flat spins. I tried an inverted flat spin today and it dropped like a stone. Great spin, but it didn't flatten out much. Is it worth be persuing a flat spin or is it not possible with this plane? Cheers Very cool

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Well I've got nothing constructive to add to the thread at the moment but this is my new plane so tough luck.[;)] I Love it. Flew it in between buddy boxing my mate with his new extra ( I really just did landed it for him.) and I had a blast. This plane is so well mannered. Haven’t done the wing wire mods yet but I've bought all the pieces. The OS fs91 with the 14x6 f series ma is making landing so easy I do atlest 5 landings per flight. Very cool. Cheers Glen

Thanks, Glad I asked for the pics. I'd guessed how the bottom was done but your system for the top of the struts is simplicity itself and far better than the series of holes and braces and clevises I was imagining. Cheers Jaybird thanks for the heads up, I had no idea the gallery feature was available. cool, very slow and didn't quite come up with the pics I was after. Couldn't see the top.

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Thanks cougar, sounds like it's worth trying. It won't hover anyway with the 91. Regarding power supplies I've converted about 6 planes (including the bolt) to 2cell 900mah li + ubec, The results are far superior to any battery pack I've ever had. Lighter and last longer per charge and more predictable. imho i.e 900mah 2 cell lip = app 1700 mah eneloop 4 cell

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
What a difference a prop makes. Thanks for all your help guys, after a little experimenting I’ve come to the conclusion you are perfectly correct. There is no need for flaps on this plane. Lands on almost the same glide pattern as the spitfire with flaps down with the right prop. I went from at 12*11 APS (don’t bother trying one) to a 14*8 MA then 14*6 MA (will actually fly 14*7 MA when I get one). Also with a little more time on the motor I was able to slow the idle a tad more. Put the cog at exactly 128mm and was landing and stopping the plane easily on less than ½ the runway. So my plane as she stands. 7.89lb, 14*6 MA, cog 128mm, OS FS91 surpass. Absolutely a blast to fly, still running in so only doing mild aerobatics. No lead at all. Balanced as assembled. Easily 20 landings this morning in spite of mud and weather. Much appreciate your help. Cheers Glen

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Thanks Jaybird. I must admit I struggle with the idea of a 6" prop on a slow reving four stroke. And yet that 14x6 seems the most prefered. Probably be great on something like a funtana or slap 3 d plane. I have a 14x8 I can try and will pick up a 14x7 and 13x8 today. Hopefully I can put it in the air again tomorrow morning. Cheers

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Now my head hurts particular flaps deployed to between 65-80 deg on commercial aircraft. wow! And approaches should be at 3 deg. I thought it was 6 deg and for models like the spitfire I bring them down at about 30 deg. Airflow over normal hinged flaps delaminates loosing lift at over 30 deg – pretty much worked on that. Didn’t realize simple slotted flaps like on my Cessna 310 and split flaps retained a lot of their lift while slowing the aircraft. Well I asked for info on WHY. lol At this point I’d kind of like to let the flaps topic drop. I was grossly over propped and hopefully reducing the pitch will help slow the plane on finals. Failing that I’ll re address this issue next week. Thanks for your help and references. Here are a couple of my planes landing with full flaps . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnMfeFMtbe4&list=UUDshvO0rycuaR67KjllxEog&index=5&feature=plcp and more importantly a picture of my new baby.

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
relax zor, not attacking conventional wisdom and quite happy to bow to your superior knowledge. I do know 15-25ish is usually considered to improve lift at low speed and take off rather than slow etc. My flaps are on planes with split flaps like the spitfire which dropped to 85 degrees, p38 etc. These are models and I just cram the flaps well down to act as airbrakes. I come down steep and then the flaps pull the plane to a quick stop on our fairly short runway. Short gentle landings save a lot of wear and tear on the models retracts. I'd also add that I've spent a lot of time trying to research what actually happens with flaps and what is the best angle to lower them to and most importantly why. There is very little technical information available to the common person such as myself. Disappointingly. So if you care to explain WHY flaps best drop to only 45 deg I would genuinely like to know. Cheers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flap_(aircraft) http://www.modelairplanenews.com/Media/MediaManager/flaps.pdf articles like these are interesting but don't give angles. On my planes such as the BT spitfire, P38, Cessna 310, DH mosquito etc I find dropping the flaps to create an airdam on touchdown prevents bounce and stops them quicker than 45deg.

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Interestingly after flying for 8 years I'd never heard of a Skybolt. Then I buy this one of the net (great deal) - next thing my good friend and shop keeper tells me he's had one in the garage the whole time and the next day he hangs another one up he's been asked to sell in his shop. From never heard off to three in one week. Anyway I'll try this with a better suited prop before cutting into the wings for flaps. Have to say I love landing with flaps. Beats me shy some people are so negative about them although all my flaps drop 60 - 85 degrees and really slow planes down. None of this 15-30 degrees nonsence. Cheers

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
jaybird, please, os 91 fs what prop are you using? I'm using an 11*11 (i think) and it's over loading the motor a bit. Thinking of going to a 14*8 to lighten the load. Thinking the smaller pitch will help with loosing air speed a bit due to less pitch and more beaking effect as you alluded to. Cheers

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Hi all, hope you don’t mind me posting here as as yet I’m not sure where my plane fits in. I just picked up a never flown great planes Super Skybolt with new OS FS90 surpass. Flew it for the first time last weekend. Great plane and a pleasure to fly. My problem was getting the wheels to touch the ground. It just wants to float by. Where I fly is quite gusty so crawling in at low speed isn’t an option as if the gust drops the planes airspeed can instantly become zero. To this end faster approaches are needed resulting in the plane floating past. My other planes have flaps and landing is a breeze soooo. Any words of advice on fitting flaps to a Skybolt. Please don’t tell me biplanes have lots of drag and don’t need them. That’s what I thought until flying this plane. Over two days I had four flights with approx. 30 landings so I’ve given it a fair try. It’s just too slippery on days where there is no wind at all to slow it down. Cheers Glen

RE: E Flite Eratix 3D 25e ARF Owners Club
Some interesting numbers 8min35s 1599mah (hyp 35c 4cell 2200mah) 8min58s 1930mah (hyp 35c 4cell 2200mah) There was a lot of throttle conservation but it was loops, rolls, cuban eights, inverted flat spin with at least a couple of big verticals and several hovers. Both batteries would hold a hover just before landing. That’s impressive. The plane does weigh 4 pound. Things have come a long way in just a few years. And they say the new ZS Hyperion motor is 10% better than the one I’m using. I’m going to enjoy this plane. Flying casually I can charge and fly two small batteries continuously but still have the planes 4C 3300mah for showing off. (not that I would or could for that matter!)
ORIGINAL: jmir I use an Eflite Power 32 with a 14 X 7 prop and a 2650mah 4-cell lipo. I can fly around 10 minutes with this set up. I do fly at 1/2 throttle most of the time. Only time I go higher than that is when getting out of hovers, knife edge loops, and fast climbs. I usually replace about 1400 mah when recharging. ]
<span style="line-height: 115%; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">Average of just 8.4 amps for a 3D 4 pound plane. That’s impressive you obviously have a motor better suited to the task than mine. No money in my kitty for that upgrade though unfortunately.

RE: E Flite Eratix 3D 25e ARF Owners Club
Replaced the speed control and flew this morning. No glitches. Two flights just stooging around, few vertical climbs, bit of hovering, lots of loops and cuban eights etc great flight one, throttle on time only. 10 minutes 37 seconds 2770mah = average 15.65 amps seconds flight, total time actually in the air. 14minutes45 seconds 2727mah = average 11.09 amps And both flights left about 20% battery in reserve. (if my calcs are wrong please let me know before I crash ) Plane has tons of performance. I can certainly live with those figures and my goal was actual time in the sky flights of 10 minutes before charging. Accomplished Cheers Glen

Ok well I reported a flat battery at 9.48 minutes based on the motor shutting down and doing a dead stick landing - however, when I charged the battery I only put 2280mah in, not 3300 so I'm going to change out the speed control and install an 80A OPTO V3.1. To be quite honest I have no idea what the current speed control is (hard to believe but true.) I'll hopefully get to try this tomorrow morning and see if that works better. RE: E Flite Eratix 3D 25e ARF Owners Club
Thanks guys Maidened it this morning and it was nice. Hovers at just over half throttle, flies nice and is reasonably steady when flying at stall. I'll try moving the cog back (currently at 4") and see how it goes. My one major disappointment was the inverted flat spin. (Remembering this is its maiden and I've not done any fine tuning or balancing). Anyone have any suggestions for setting it up to do this so I don't have to re-invent the wheel? Anyway, for what I want this is going to be perfect. Big plane feel yet light enough to park fly when the flying field is too wet. Using an old Hyperion z3025 08, 4cell 3300mah and 11x5.5e I couldn’t get near full throttle (too much power) so might something smaller. Did most my flying (stooging around and gentle aero) at about 1/4 throttle. lovely. Cheers

RE: 4PK dual rate switch
I assume by the date you've sorted this but just in case Dual rates on the aircraft radio's means two different rates Dual rates on the 4pk just means simultaneous end point adjustment. (Dumb system I reckon) To set up dual rates as you want you actually use second condition in the system menu. I only found the answer by accident. The manual tells you how to do things but not what the things do. Frustrating because coming from the Futaba 9C radio which I think is the most intuitive radio system out there I find the 4PK and excellent radio but a beggar to understand and set up. Nothing makes sense and you set up half a function here but make it work somewhere else. Weird. And as for their channel mixing abilities. apart from being additional to each other they do nothing. (As you can tell I like the radio but compared to aircraft radios this is like stepping back 15 years.) And throttle cut = start menu? what? LOL Cheers Glen

RE: improved vibration
Sorry about that Barry. It was never my intension to put anyone off these motors. As stated, mine started, ran, idled, transitioned, developed power as good as any other motor used. Really wanted to get mine going and this is supposed to be the manufacturers, (or representative) forum. Also remember the 90 does not appear to have the issue to anywhere near the same degree and the http://manuals.hobbico.com/gpm/gpmg2000-manual-v1_2.pdf should remove any remaining issues easily. You have to assume they've sold literally hundreds if not thousands of these motors and presumable a lot are being used quite successfully. I will have another go with mine as I refuse to be beat and in fairness I have not contacted RCV directly which would be the logical thing to do. Now that I've repowered my spitfire electrically the urgency has gone out of the rcv so it could be awhile before I sort it out. But rest assured it'll be getting more attention yet. It'll just go into something different. There is an sp running very regularly at our club and it’s awesome. Cheers Glen The second diagram is the only useable option as the gears bottoming out will beggar the bearings very quickly if not already ruined.
