Plans show it powered by a Fox .25 schnuerle. Mine sports an Enya .09. [;)] George

RE: Some technical Cox 049 questions
To amplify what ChrisM said, when Norvels were new kids on the block someone switched heads on a TD and NORVEL and both engines gained RPM. Go figure. Sooo, as previously stated in different words, you may be better off just picking a plug and tuning for your setup. George

The TD head not only has more compression but also has a "squish band" around the combustion chamber for higher performance. My question is does the Nelson plug/Galbreath head set have a squish band? George

RE: Looking for Cox engines and parts
ORIGINAL: jsesere My son's Scout troop got a donation of some 1/2 A kits. Some will use Bee type back plates and some are rail mounts. We will take anything you don't need. I have another person who offered some misc. parts so I will have to mix and match to put some engines together.
In the mean time, how many folks can help the boys put the kits together correctly? What kind of kits are they? You can switch engines between planes if necessary so all boys get to fly their plane. You will find the "Bee" type back plate mounting referred to as "radial" mounting. The rail mounts are called "beam" mounts. What about tools, glue, paint, etc. BTW, I have been a Scouter for over 31 years. George

RE: Starting ?
I use two "D" cells taped together as well as a booster. For the "D" cells, I tape them together but solder the leads. I found it best to tin the batteries quickly so not to damage them, then tin the connecting wires, then solder them together. This affords (for me) the fastest connection without a lot of heat transfer to the batteries. These will usually last for a year, then replace the batteries. I use the "D" cells for smaller engines and the booster for larger ones. George

RE: Starting ?
ORIGINAL: pmerritt ...It won't take a fellow long to realize that hooking a 6 volt battery to a glow plug will break the wallet pretty quick!
The batteries made from "D" cells used to come in 1.5V. (parallel) or 6V (series). Of course we used the 1.5V. ones. Before that we used "doorbell" batteries that were about 6" tall and about 2" in diameter. I used two of those hooked in parallel to get 1.5V and would last at least a year. Also used wire and alligator clips for hookup. BTW, first time I tried to start an engine (Space Bug Jr. ~ 1954) I was inside and attempted to use a model train transformer (didn't yet have a battery). I did not realize that the xformer turned on at ~13VAC. Glow head went off like a flash bulb and I went to my LHS to get another plug and a battery. :( George

RE: Simple Trainer for a .15?
ORIGINAL: JohnBuckner ...When it is dead calm the slider can be set at full forward and the airplane does fine and very stable as well as a slow rotation on the sixty foot lines. When the breeze comes up it takes just seconds to move more towards the trailing edge and the airplane has no problem at all in staying out on the long lines in fairly stiff breezes... John
You will also find that the length and diameter of your lines affect how much the line bows. Most stunt planes use adjustable leadouts to fine tune how well the airplane flys. George

RE: PAW 06 low revs
AMB, You should be heat cycling your PAW. Run it up to max for one minute, pull the fuel tubing or pinch it off so the engine quits, let it cool for five minutes. Do this about a dozen times and your PAW should be fully broken in. Here's a good place to read why: http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/dieselcombat/index.htm George

RE: Would appreciate advice for give-away plane
Stefan, Is your club CL or RC? You seem to be getting suggestions for both. Chances are that your friend would not fly by himself so the suggestion of taking him to the club field is probably a good one. I would suggest making a plane for yourself powered by one of those engines and offering to let him fly it (stick time or handle time). Of those engines I can vouch for the Enya .35 (Enyas live forever) and the MAX-H .60. My Enya .35 is a CL version. The MAX-H .60 was available in front intake and rear intake versions. I have the front intake which was dubbed "Golden Pride" for the gold anodized head. Both versions were excellent runners. George

RE: More 2.5cc Diesels
ORIGINAL: earlwb One thing I noticed with the model diesel engines is that they tend to cool off when you go to low throttle with a RC version. Then when you go back to WOT you have to wait for the engine to heat up and start running faster and faster. So you have to be careful of the needle valve adjustments, compression etc.
When I set compression there is usually a flat spot where more compression does not yield more RPM then further increase causes RPM to drop off. For CL I use the low end just before it drops off but for throttle use the higher end will usually keep the heat up so it will recover faster when the throttle is moved from slow to fast. How effective this is depends on engine and fuel of course. Give it a try. George
