RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Noah, I am in no way, a painting expert. In fact, I goof up all of the time. So, take this with a grain of salt. I have tried many types of paint through the years from Hobby poxy, Rustoleum, Plastic model paints, Auto paints, etc. I never had alot of success, but always liked the two part catalyzed auto paints for thier durability. I generally prefer using auto enamel or polyurethane paints since the pigment is usually pretty high and they flow pretty well. However, they are generally not too cheap. And, if you have a relatively large surface area, it never hurts to gent a qt of paint to work from and then you have some "spare paint for repairs. Over the last few planes that I have painted (Beech Bonanza (3), BVM F16(2), and now the avenger, I have used testors model master and then clear coated with a poly 2 part catalyzed. The model master enamels are not too durable, so take care before clearcoat. I buy a number of little 1/2 oz bottles and mix them together and then thin 1-1 with the thinner. BTW, I have a lot of spare paint if anyone needs dark sea blue and intermediate blue. :) So, from start to finish PPG or equivalent High build two part primer (PPG K36 or equivalent) ...yes, HIGH BUILD. This stuff is awesome. I usually brush on some to fill some of the remaining glass weave, but spraying is always better. You need a fairly large tip, but I think you just thin it a little more and dont over spray the build. Work slowly. No need for sealer or anything else. Heck, its a model. Auto base coat paint or model master enamel. PPG 2 part enamel or poly U clear coat lightly sprayed on I use 2021 and 2060 PPG (overkill). I have several paint guns...all are pretty crummy. I generally use a large volume HVLP gun for primer. Then I use a small detail gun and my airbrush with several tips for the paint. Then the detail gun for the clear. You can get pretty cheap ones at all of the local stored (lowes, Home depot, etc..) just play with the air pressure and mix to fint the right spray for your liking. Again, I am no expert. My airbrush is a single action paasche. Again, nothing special. I prefer to flow less paint and build up the coats. The avenger is not a high quality paint job. I just eyeballed the paint lines. Masked with 3M fine line take (blue), (use the green 3M for masking), then went over the lines with the airbrush to soften them a bit. Paint drops dont scale down a whole lot. Again, I really don't feel too good about my work sometimes. And I make alot of mistakes that have to be redone.

Hello Fellas. I was hoping to contribute more to the discussion regarding my avenger build, but got lost due to kids, priorities, etc... In fact, I cannot remember when I last posted. I am trying to find the motivation to finish my bird for next summer. And, I am essentially in the detail phase and quite honestly, this stuff bores me a bit. It just takes so long to get so little done. However, seeing your pics has revitalized me a bit to get it done. It has been fun to read all of your experiences. Thanks Jim

I hope that the wing retainment is shown. It counts on W7 being supported by the Diagonal supports. Since this only "retains the panel"and does not provide the actual support that the tube provides, I think it should be good. The Tail gear mount is a sandwich of the gear former and another aircraft ply former with hardwood blocks angled to support the correct position to allow the wheel to fully retract and approximately to right retracted position. RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Chic, Keep in mind that the cowl does not line up with the firewall. It lines up with the 1" spacer on the end of the firewall. Also, instead of using the tabs to retain the wings, I supported W7 and will retain the wings through the gear opening. I used the tab method on a Ziroli B25 before and I was always concerned about it breaking off. Attached are a couple pics. Sorry, they are not very good. My plane has been in this stage for many months. I wished that I had taken more pics of the construction, but sorry to say that I did'nt. ONe of the other challenges was the tail wheel mount. That was quite a bit of fun. I'll take some pics later. Jim

OS 70 Ultimate carb question / solution
Bax, I understand that there were some pump vaporization issues with early build engines. I bought two of these engines in 2006 from Tower. After 20 or so flights, one of the engines started running leaner and leaner and would surge. Eventually, it was impossible to start the engine especially after it was warm. After much trial and error, I was able to completely fix this problem with a replacement of the regulator diaphram on the carb body. As a side note, I was able to replicate the issue by reinstalling the old diaphram on the engine. Essentially, I could turn the problem on and off by changing this one part even though I could not find anything visibly wrong with the diaphram. Unfortunately, the diaphram is only sold as an assembly to the carb body ($40 plus shipping). Anyway, I tossed this issue to bad luck and began flying the plane again after installing a new part. After another 20 or so flights, the same problem started to show again. Slowly the engine started to run leaner and leaner until it would surge. Eventually, not starting. Once again, I was able to replicate the issue by replacing the regulator diaphram and the engine now runs perfectly again. However, this has now cost me an additional $46 since OS just raised prices. I now have spent $600 on engines and $86 bucks for diaphrams and am very concerned that this will happen again. Clearly the fuel vaprization (or some other problem) is damaging the diaphrams. Although I doubt OS will do anything about this, I do wish to buy a bunch of diaphrams instead of entire carb bodies for this engine. Can you help? Jim Gibboney Livonia, Mi

RE: top flite bonanza question
OK, Here's my history... Built three of them. Most of the Bonanzas on RCu seem to be coming in at around 15 lbs or so depending on level of detail. Mine is in the 14 lb range with glass @ painted finish, retracts, and OS 120 4 stroke. Also, there was a necessary shift of the CG based on feedback from top flight and those on RCU. Here is what I found: When assembling, the V-horizontal stabs (v-tail saves weight) based on the supplied formers were too little incidence (leading edge too far down by about 4 degrees). The plans however, indicated 2 degrees and this seems quite accurate. This would require either down elevator to maintain level flight or more nose weight. I revised the formers to get back to 2 degrees and this meant that I only needed minimal noseweight to balance per the original CG location. I really like flying this plane, but it does not like crosswinds and with less yaw control (v-tail) it is challenging to fly. But, you rally have to love that v-tail. Good luck Jim

RE: Tinting windows on scale models
Here is one showing a slightly blue tinted canopy. I've tried to mimic this with RIT dye in warm water & salt (~ 125 degrees ish). Does a pretty good job, but you have to test a piece before you try it. Also, all canopy windows have to go into the bath at the same time and for the same duration to get color consistancy. Jim

RE: Top Flite Cessna 310 posted
Marktur, Yes, the .70 engines are enough power for large loops and cruises easily at half power. I use 13x7 apc props and get about 10K rpm. You can use the supplied motor mounts. The advantage of using the .70 ultimate is they are a bit shorter in height and stick out less of the nacell as the normal 70 and the head is blue. Also, the pumped engine does not require muffler pressure so I don't use mufflers. I just run the straight header pointed down. This minimizes the weight and unsightly muffler. I have 38 flights on mine so far.

RE: Building a Bonanza
The Vtail will be lighter. However, I had previously indicated that the tail mounting former was providing the incorrect incidence requiring more weight up front to balance properly. I remember many people on here saying that the CG had to move forward by 3/4". Having readjusted the incidence to match the plans ( I think it was the same as the wing) on mine meant that I could maintaind the CG on the plans and keep the overall weight to around 14.5 lbs glassed and painted. Not sure if this is well known, but if anyone is looking for wheels and brakes for the C310, try the BVM T33 (Main only) wheels. They are 3.5" and are rather thin. Plus they are for 3/16" axles so you don't need to enlarge the struts. I've been using these all summer with great success. Jim

The Avenger was designed by Charlie Kellog. He can provide the plan and the fiberglass bits only, but I believe several kit cutters do provide this kit. I think I was one of the first to get the plans and the fiberglass pieces from Charlie. He was very pleasant to deal with. Jim
