RE: fuel for tt 39
Because I have some YS four stroke airplane engines, I chose to run YS 20-20 fuel in my TT39 and TT53 engines so I only need one type of fuel. I have gotten excellent results from both engines with YS 20-20, and will continue to use it. Fly safe, Glover

RE: Raptor 30, Adjustment Problems.
Basil, I don't know about other fuels, as my only experience with the TT 39 and TT 53 has been with YS 20-20 fuel. Your OS engine will most likely require a different gear ratio and engine mount, and I can my guess that other changes could be required. My experience with two TT 39's in the R-30 is that they work just fine. The R-30 is "what it is", a slightly underpowered toy; but I enjoy flying mine as well as I do my R-50SE. I'm only a sport flyer who enjoys FFF with the occasional loop, flip, split-s, etc. and the R-30 with TT 39 works quite well for my flying requirements. Fortunately neither of my 39's have ever stopped running other than when I pinch the fuel line shut, so I must just be lucky. I did have the luxury of having an expert in a near-by town check out my R-30 prior to me ever attempting to start or fly it. Having a mentor to tune the head and engine of my R-30 meant that if I had spent enough time on the sim, I was going to succeed. If you can, find a mentor and seek their guidance. Fly safe, Glover

RE: Raptor 30, Adjustment Problems.
Basil: Six turns out is a little further out than what I use. Both of my 39's have needle value settings more like 4 to 4.5 out. When I pinch the fuel line closed (engine at idle following a flight), it takes 3-5 seconds for the engine to stop. Along with a nice mid-range transition, this makes me think that my low-end is about right. I started with the high-end at 5 out, and following every flight I test the engine back-plate with my finger. If it feels at all cool, I turn the high-end in a click. Another test is to apply full collective and see if the engine bogs down at all. If it does, then I go in on the high-end another click. The full throttle response is rather slow due to the weight to power ratio of the R-30, but it should steadily get up to 100 feet or so before its acceleration slows appreciably. Each engine can be a little different, but my two 39's are running as expected by using this adjustment scheme. I used the same scheme on the 53 in my R-50, and that engine works well also. The "number of turns" on the valves are different, but the results are the same... an enngine that works for me. Remember... just "try stuff". You'll be OK as long as you do not get it too lean... look for lots of exhaust coming from your muffler; be a polluter. I also suggest an OS#8 glow on that engine. Fly safe, Glover PS I run YS 20-20 fuel. Twenty percent nitro and twenty percent synthetic. I use that fuel because I have YS engines on some of my plank toys and want to take one can of nitro to the field.

RE: battery requirements for digital servos
Gavin with your servos, you should be able to run a 5S Nimh of about 2400mah rating or a 2S A123 pack rated at 2300mah... and both un-regulated. The reason that most folks run regulated packs is because most rudder servos are limited to 4.8v. Yours is not. I run the ACE DS0606 along with four digital Hitec 5625's on a 2S A123 2300mah un-regulated pack, and it works great. After flying three to four tanks, I normally replace about 600mah when I recharge the pack. So cut your 6S NiMh pack back to a 5S pack, and go fly! Save that regulator money for fuel. RE: Drops like a brick?
Justin, another option is to build the "test stand" described in Ray's book. Since you are alone, that will allow you to initially set the pitch/throttle curves and tune the engine without risk of doing the dying chicken dance. I have built the platform Ray describes, and use to hold my R-30 during transport to the field... a true multi-tasker. For what it is worth, I only hovered and flew figure-eights, circles and straight line passes for the first two gallons of fuel before my engine was broken-in. (That was in addition to runnning it on a static stand with a 9*6 prop for threed tanks to seat the ring before it was mounted in the helicopter.) Fly safe, Glover

RE: Drops like a brick?
Excellent! To tune my engine, what my mentor did was to use a pitch guage and verify my settings. Then he would perform fast climb outs, both upright and inverted, and adjusted the carb until it would not bog down. I could not have done that, because I do not yet have the confidence to get my R-30 inverted, LOL. I agree that finding my mentor was not easy, but getting his assistance was priceless in time saved by me... not to mention the confidence he provided. I've been flying planks for a few years, and no one at my club flies helicopters; so I had to search beyond my normal area to get the help I wanted (but it was well worth the effort). RE: Drops like a brick?
Justin, I too am new to helicopters and the R-30. But I'm having success because of the time I've spent on a simulator, reading RaptorTechnique.com, reading Ray's Authotative Helicopter Manual and most of all because I found a person in a nearby city who checked out my helicopter including adjusting the engine and tweaking the pitch and throttle curves in my TX. So the advise I have for your current issue is to find someone within a few hours drive and get them to help you. I have not yet made my R-30 perform the dying chicken dance primarily due to having someone verify that my toy works correctly. Once you have confidence that your toy is set up correctly, then you'll only have to be concerned about flying. If you can trust your equipment, you'll learn to trust yourself. Fly safe, Glover

Which R-30 cooling fan?
I have a R-30 with which I've progressed to flying circuits, but unless I fly rather agressively (for me that is) it will over-rev more often that I like. Note that I have been fortunate enough to have an out-of-town expert verify my setup and prove it's air worthiness by performing basic aerobatics with it, but the throttle curve he flew with is too agressive for me just yet. I've left his curves under Idle Up 2, and have reduced the throttle percentage a few points in Idle Up 1 (which I use). This is working somewhat; but since I most often do not have someone available to tach my toy, I think I'll bite-the-bullet and install a governor. I was going to wait until I progressed to a larger Raptor next year before installing my first governor, but the R-30 is working so well for me that I'm prepared to learn about governor installation now. I'm running a basic R-30 ARF with a broken-in TT39 engine which as most other folks report runs a little hot. My questions are: "Does the TT metal replacement fan come with pre-formed indents for governor magnets like the standard one does, and does the metal fan cool better?" If the metal fan is as receptive to the governor magnet and cools better, then the extra forty bucks will be easy to spend. Thanks for your assistance. Fly safe, Glover

RE: Thunder Tiger TG7000 Gyro with Futaba issues....
Dick, your experience is similar to mine. Mine worked fine with my Futaba 9C, but when I switched to a 12FG it would not work. I swaped the gyro for a 401 (same TT servo), all was well. My call to ACE was "blown off" as "not their problem". The support person from A Main Hobbies (where I purchased the gyro/servo) promised that he would make an attempt to duplicate the issue and get back to me. But that has not yet happened. I wanted to use that combo so that I could use my standard airplane RX pack of an unregulated 2S A123... which does work quite well. Fly safe, Glover

RE: YS 20/20 nitro in a Raptor 90?
Rafael, thanks for your insite. I know that 20/20 is an abbreviation for 20 percent nitro and 20 percent synthetic oil. I just wanted to be re-assured that I'd have enough power in a 90 for sport flying when using "my standard glow fuel". I'll relax and continue to browse the classifieds for a 90 in my neighborhood (so I can see it before the purchase). Some that I see look to be priced at a fair level when compared with all new components... re-cycling is a good thing. Fly safe, Glover

RE: YS 20/20 nitro in a Raptor 90?
James, thanks for your input. I fly at about 250 ASL... so pretty low. I attended a heli event in my area a few weeks ago, and the only thing that I really remember about the fuel was that some of it had an awfull stench. I'd rather not have to go there! Yes, I use YS 20/20 because some of my fixed wing toys have YS four stroke engines. Onother option for me is to get a gasoline powered heli, as I also fly 50cc fixed wing toys. I'll have to look for some videos of gasoline powered to see how well they loop, roll and flip. I'm just trying to reduce the "explosion" of field equipment I have to haul to the field when I start helicopter flying next summmer. Fly safe, Glover

YS 20/20 nitro in a Raptor 90?
I fly gas and nitro fixed wing toys, and intend to buy a large used heli (or build a smaller new one from a kit). I'd like to be able to use the same nitro in my heli as I use in my glow fixed wing toys. I use YS 20/20 in all of my nitro engines (both four and two stroke) and prefer to continue to only have one can of nitro at the field. If this fuel will not be rich enough for a 90's engine, then I'll just start with a 50 sized heli. Since my sim testing tells me that a 90 will be much easier to fly than its smaller cousins, therefore my first choice for a heli is a Raptor 90. So will YS 20/20 be ok in an OS91 heli engine for sport flying? Fly safe, Glover

RE: New Somenized (TM) 69", Yak-54
Alan, I believe that it is always a good thing to be concerned about proper engine ventilation. I cut the vent in the bottom of my cowling for the muffler larger than necessary... for ventilation. (For my gasoline engines, I try to make the vent outlet larger than the input. Also baffleing to direct air towards the engine is frequently used on big Yak's.) As far as things to look for in your assembly, cut away the covering in the area of the landing gear mount and liberally glue the mount in place. My only two YAk 69 "peaves" are that the mount was not properly glued, and the canopy/hatch "rattles" way to much. Flight performance is good. Fly safe, Glover

RE: How to contact Golden Eagle Aircraft?
Yep, and Chris assures me that the backup Talon is on its way. I flew my Talon again this morning. The weather was beautiful, and considering my limited skills; the Talon continues to please me. DA-50, Futaba PCM RX, Smart-Fly kill switch, a 2S 2300mah A123 burried in each wing (a 4S 1500mah NiMh on ignition), HS-5955's on surfaces, HS225 on throttle. My only surprise is that I needed to add nearly 9oz of balast in the ignition battery box area to get it to balance properly. I dug out space in the wing roots for the A123's (just behind the opening for the aileron servo wires), and should have placed them further forward. An additional truth is that only one A123 pack is really needed for the typical 6-8 flights that I make on any day. (I also added some plywood under the elevator servos to serparate them to make room for the "Y" that I placed back there. I might have saved some tail weight by making custom extentions... I can be lazy.) Never the less I like the toy, and hope that I never have to build the backup. (The Talon reminds me a lot of a flying buddy's Hots that he powers with a DA-50.) Fly safe, Glover

RE: How to contact Golden Eagle Aircraft?
Thanks Joe. It also now works for me... I should have been more patient with the internet. But being a "kid at heart", if not in age; I just had to get another Talon on the way to my house. This morning when I returned home from my daily session of aimlessly poking holes in the sky (today with my Talon XP), I just had to get a backup Talon on the way to my house. (Sadly, I always "yard dart" my favorite toys! A Fusion X3D was my latest casuality just five days ago.) I just placed an order online with Chris: and hopefully Gustav will not cause too long of a delay in shipment; as the importance of toy airplanes does not compare to the impact caused by a cat 4 hurricane. I hope everyhone remains safe from Gustav (and Hannah coming up the "space" coast later in the week, Glover.
