RE: 1980's Sig Colt.
I cut my teeth on a Sig Colt in 1977. It had an HB .20 on it and flew very well, even with a World Engines Expert radio.... about the only airframe that radio did not crash[:D] Wonderful three channel model. Congratulations!

RE: Best Kits
Although not available (as far as I know) from any retailer, the Royal, aka Marutaka kits are of exceptional quality and a fun but challenging scale building experience. Sold mostly on "The Bay" and here in the classifieds of RCU, they can be a bit pricy, but well worth it. Old "MK" (M. Kato) kits, mostly pattern/aerobatic non-scale models are also outstanding with machine cut parts rivaling any laser cut part today. Great wood, too. "Pilot" brand kits offer dozens of different subjects ranging from sport Sunday fliers to excellent sport scale airframes. Like the Royal/Marutaka kits, these are available only on the classified market and tend to be highly sought after, garnering premium pricing. All of these kit brands are from Japan.

RE: What size of RC planes do you like?
I soloed in 1977, and this was the era of the .60 size airframe being the biggest practical size available. Hundreds of kits were offered in this size range. Bud Nosen offered quarter scale kits which utilized belt drives and .60 engines, because large gas engines were still in their infancy. I still like the .60 size airframe, especially classic pattern planes.

Hysol and Polyester Fiberglass Resin Compatibility
Very simple question: Will Hysol adhere to a polyester resin fuselage if it is properly roughed up and cleaned? Thanks, Mike

RE: Bridi Great Escape Wing Dihedral Question
Thanks Jeff. It's been a while since I did a foam core wing that did not have a wing tube! Your drawing is exactly as it is supposed to be done. Interestingly, my cores are (were) nearly perfect, mating with very little sanding necessary. Mike

RE: Bridi Great Escape Wing Dihedral Question
Thank you. I believe I have figured out the issue. The constuction notes have you turn the wing halves onto the designated "top" side and aligning them on a flat surface. Any gap in the wing halves on the bottom is what needs to be sanded at the top of the wing to create the proper dihedral, that is, 13/16ths TOTAL, NOT under both wing tips. This creates a flat wing on top with appropriate dihedral on the bottom. Thank heavens I read the construction notes! If anyone would mind verifying my conclusion, I would appreciate. Thanks, Mike

Bridi Great Escape Wing Dihedral Question
I have the wing halves prepared and ready to join. The plans indicate 13/16ths of an inch under BOTH wing tips for proper dihedral. This seems like a huge amount of dihedral for a pattern plane. Can someone verify this for me? Thanks, Mike

Want to purchase Joe Bridi Mamma Mia Plans...
I have been researching where to get a plan set from this old R/C Model Builder Magazine article, and found a thread here in the classic pattern section that Bill Northrop sold them. Other internet research says Mr. Northrop has recently passed away.... so can anyone give me a lead where to get the plans now? Thanks, Mike

Over two years after I started this thread, I finally have time to work on the Great Escape. I see in the plans and in the written instructions there is no suggestion for side or down thrust in the engine.... Suggestions on this? Thanks, Mike

Outstanding. I will be flying Intermediate. I am going to bring my camper so I don't have to commute back and forth to Clear Lake... it would be roughly 360 miles if I drove round trip Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Mike

Hi Bob, Thanks for getting back with me. So that explains the lack of an engraved displacement on the engine! Here are some pics. I am beginning to believe it is a .40. Let me know.... Mike

Need help identifying Sport Jett Engine for Bearing Replacement...
I have a Sport Jett that does not have any identifying engraving on it. I believe it to be an eariler model as the needle valve assembly is on the carb, not in the now standard remote position. I put on the bench yesterday, and inspite of a pretty rough main bearing, it turned an APC 10 X 6 at 15,500 on 10% fuel. As Dub is closed right now until the 29th, would anyone know what displacement this engine is, and what bearings might be needed? I suspect it is a .40 or a .46. I am not aware if Dub made a Sport Jett .40, so I am guessing. Thanks in advance! Mike in Clear Lake

RE: USPS, Service with a smile. The Sequel
I can relate Dave, to your issue here. Shipping several hundred packages via USPS a year, they typically lose four to six, and crush another four to six. Priority Mail "delivery confirmation" is never on the USPS.com website. And since I am serviced by the the same branch you go to, I too find it amazing the utterly blank, burned out responses of the counter help... there is nothing they can do and why should they try to make it right? Another thing about this particular branch in the Clear Lake NASA area of Houston is the long lines. I have never seen more than two counter personnel waiting on customers, period. And when break time comes for one of them, it is of no consequence that there are twenty people standing in line, they go on break. Thank god for USPS online mailing labels and Ebay/Paypal online mailing labels!!! BTW, senior counter help can make up to $70K a year... for doing little more than what a check out person does at Walmart. Mike
