RE: Thunder in the Valley Jet Event, Northern California
Thank you to all the participants who made it to our event! We had a record temperature of 109F with some wind that help us to cool down on the shades. We had a small attendance in terms of pilots and we did have some public present at the event. It was great to see some good friends and I did enjoy flying my SM Viper despite the heat! We will share some pictures later on the week. Best, Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Ron, that price SKYMASTER gave you is quite reasonable for one fan in the world of 3D printing.... probably they are given you at cost. Yes 3D printing can also be done in Titanium….. but the price will be very very expensive. Now if SkyMaster can switch those fan productions to a 3D printing sintering process that will be super! Very strong and the surface definition will be amazing. If they would like to do some traditional molds to injection plastic…. more of the traditional way it will be very very expensive for them due to the low volume on the run. RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Ron, There is a possibility you had a delamination on that fan.... prior to any flight..... Then, with rotational forces became more apparent an then separation occurred. SKYMASTER is using a 3D printer to produce those fans using a method call FDM. As I do lots of research on 3D printing at work, I can produce the same fan 5 times stronger and with zero possibility of delamination by using a sintering 3D printing process which is more of a high end 3D Printer. The fan smoothes finishing will be 5 times better. If I have the 3D CAD design I will be happy to get some fan out of our systems….. but I don’t have the 3D CAD model…. I can do one but it will take me some time. If one of my fans fails then I will do some amazing fan design that we can retrofit…. but until now mine is working quite well. Gonzalo Northern California

Hey Ron, I agree with Michael...... I have over 20 flights on mine no issues at all..... and I killed tons of bugs during those low passes over our field! actually I don't need any weathering technique with all thoese bugs there! Gonzalo Northern California

RE: Northern Cali jet guys at best
I had a BLAST! the weather was simply perfect, no wind, low 80..... and the company the BEST! This field is out of this world.... unfortunatelly a little bit far for me as it takes me at least 2 hours to get there but once in a while a MUST. I can't wait to do some A10 formation with Danley! what a great group of pilots. I wish I had more pictures but I was quite busy burning some jet fuel [:D] Best, Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
It locks very well when the gear is in down position but it doesn't lock in the up position and that why Skymaster put an additional lock system on the mains that are install on the wings. The front gear is OK. Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Yes Jack! you are a pain in the neck but I love you! There are a few things that I need to check and I don’t want to rush as you said I spent lots of time on this plane. Hopefully next weekend would be the day!!!!! and Jack as much as you want.... you have "zero" influence on me trying to rush the maiden [:D] I know you put your planes quite fast because of your Velcro techniques used in everything..... including the turbines! [:D] Gzzzzzz!!!! Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Very good points Jack (Dad) and in fact some of the settings that you are recommending can be theoretically done on the ECU for the Merlin turbines. My first flight was done with Normal: Full Expo as its the default of the turbine…and despite everyone was telling me that with 50% throttle I should be flying to a perfect cruising speed….. In my case I felt the airplane was a little bit too slow and felt heavy. On landing with full flaps was a total floater. On the second flight I change the settings of the turbine to Half Expo and what a difference! At 65% throttle the airplane was on rails and the way I like to fly. I also noticed my trims where exactly the same for all flaps positions and I didn't feel at all the tendancy of going up or down when applying power...... but I need to check that more on the next flights. To illustrate more see below the graphs for the Merlin power distribution and throttle position. Thanks for your feedback as always and looking forward to see you in October! Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Hey Mick, You just need to be ahed of the curve as you would be flying a heavier plane with more drag. She flies like a dream! You always need to alert with the power so she doesn't bite you back. Is the same with my 1/4 scale helicopter! ahead of the curve. You are going to love it the SM A10! Gonzalo

The A10 is balance and getting ready for the maiden! a few more scale pieces to install and do all the ground test for turbines and handling on the ground. I ended putting 1 lbs on the nose to have the CG at 145mm Enjoy, Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Hey Dantley, I will be happy to provide you with some parts but the true is that I didn't do much 3D printing for the A10..... I just did a lens holder and a few tiny things there for 3D printing. I did some machining on my lathe of some parts and laser cuts some other parts too. I might do an entire cockpit in the future that will be a dream to have but that will be much later. I really want to get this bird up in the air ASAP so I am working on that. I really love the turbines that I choose! Merlins 140..... they are so light and tons of power and the Ali exhaust system make the SM A10 looks so much nicer! Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
Installation done on the fuse! I just need to install the turbines in the pods, add some orange to the air brakes and we will be ready for maiden. I am happy that I did the clear installation over the tanks as I can easily see the fuel levels. The switches are for the turbines ECUs in case I want to start them independently. I did cut also the light fixture on the back and put the 1 watt led from details 4 scale. I just need some paint over the black ring that I machined. Tje LED are so bright that I will have to be careful looking the plane from the back [:D] By the way each tanks holds exactly 1 gallon of jet fuel. Almost there my friends and the way I like it. RE: Duralite internal balance Li-ions and Li-mags: Charge in jet?
Don, I am in the same situation for my jets and turbine helicopters. I also use Ions and Magnesium and I am also moving to the Duralites A123 on newer jets. I used Ions and Magnesium over 6 years with zero issues charging inside the plane/helicopter. I do charge them attended but with the latest 4 ports Hitec charger as I like to know how the battery is behaving during the charge. I also keep them at storage voltage when at home. Other types of lipos are a very different story. Those I charge them outside the aircraft with top of the line chargers with the battery inside the protective lipo bag and always attended. When I storage them I put them back on a lipo bag and then I put them inside an ammunition box with vents and always at storage voltage. So far zero issues and I wish we have a better solution. I always treat them as fuel. Gonzalo

RE: Skymaster 1:6 A10 Build
More work on my A10 and I just tried the fit of the board over the tanks.... it's bright orange. I like the fact that is transparent and you can see the level of the fuel tanks. I might make the bord just transparrent. The nice thing is that I used the laser cutter in my office to cut the acrilic and it only took about 25 seconds with all the opening etc. I placing the switch for the turbines ECU, charge sockets for the batteries, shut off valves for main fuel tanks. Enjoy, Gonzalo
