RE: Go Pro and other Videos ...
Here are a couple of videos from onboard my GTX. First one is a flip, but I only got half of a barrel roll out of it! Second one is some side by side running with my brothers Central RC Skater. Around the two minute mark, he was watching my boat in the turn and put his on shore. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpKLS3CS8Jw&feature=youtube_gdata_player https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EmZU5OYPeg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

RE: Stepped Hulls, yes or no
A stepped hull will have more stern lift in smooth water and will ride on 3 or more points on the keel for more stability. When the water gets choppy, the additional aeration in the back can cause instability in corners. This is what I've read, seen, and experienced in my years on 1:1, and scale boats. Not all stepped hulls are engineered the same, either. Making a call on which is better is almost the impossible question because of all of the different hulls, and setups available. As the hull gets larger, the difference in handling between stepped/non-stepped I believe gets smaller. As speed rises, I think the opposite is true. So, how fast do you want to go, and in how rough is the water?

RE: Newbie Need Help
It'd have to be a pretty strong single to push 72" of Apache hull. Maybe something like an RMCK K30, or a modded zenoah 29.5. A single RMCK 600 inline would be the logical power choice. If it were mine, I'd do counter rotating 30's, but that a bit of setup for a first build.

RE: which one to get????
They are good to look at, but that's about it. You'll learn more and have a better boat by building your own from a quality fiberglass hull. If you must get a RTR, and want a great bang for the buck, go to Warehouse Hobbies. Expresscraft, Bonzi and other manufacturers will also assemble a great boat ready to run, and look great too.

RE: Any Venom segad or king of shaves owners? would it handle 29cc zen or 35cc quickdraw
That's neat, at best. Far too much engine for the weak lay-up of the hull, IMO. Besides, we GPS'd his over 51 mph with the single. Broke that hull, and transferred everything into a Central Hobbies Skater hull that's build 10x as well. Bigger, heavier hull and still GPS upper 40's without playing with props. Perfect play boat.

My GTX is in the mid 40s with a 29 Zen. It weighs just over 20 lbs with fuel. Hope to get a few more mph with a bigger prop next season. I run out of prop with a 7015/3 from dasboata.

RE: RIO 51 refurbishing questions
I drilled a hole in the radio box and mounted the cable. It was pretty simple. If I were to do it again, I'd go the pushrod and turnbuckle setup route. The cable worked ok, but the pushrod is more direct and works better in my gtx.

RE: RIO 51 refurbishing questions
my first gasser boat was a rio 51 i bought with no engine. i bought a zen/clutch and dropped it in. from what i remember, i was able to use the stock rio flex shaft with the new engine, but had to shorten the flex cable slightly for the cG to be correct. the boat ran pretty decent with a stock zen 26. i cracked the hull after a motor mount loosened up and the bottom of the engine smacked the inside of the hull. i ran the boat in some pretty rough water... i used the stock radio box, but ran a different throttle cable. i probably could have worked a pushrod setup to work, but hey, it was my first gasser and i was learning. i made 'L' brackets to get the front of the engine high enough in the front to have the right angle for the drive shaft. to get the pipe to fit lower in the hull, i cut and had welded the header. you could use an angled exhaust manifold to acheive the same thing, but this was quicker and didnt cost anything. here are a couple pics if they help at all. It's not the fastest set up, but it works well. Tony at warehouse is really helpful for a new builder. His drive sets and cables are a great combo. A lot of people will suggest a single rudder for more speed, but I think unless its an inline rudder, you're giving up some turning to the left with a single offset rudder.

RE: need help to I.D this yard sale find...have PICS
I think Tom has said in the past a lot of his old hulls made more lift, so putting too much power in it might make it a little unstable at higher speeds. 50 mph with a single mod Zen or rcmk is probably best for it.

Tom from Expresscraft is on this board. He may be able to tell you more about it. Looks like its a few years old. Maybe 1990's? Cool looking large scale hull. I'd strip it, and start fresh and have a nice play boat. Gotta keep the era graphics and radar arch though!

RE: Very Large scale .. help needed
There are 72" and larger hulls readily available. First though, your choice of power is not realistic for a boat this size. You simply won't be able to displace 100 lbs in any hull this size. Second, far too much power. Even 50 horsepower is too much. If you want to build a boat, start with the size hull, and power accordingly. Or get a bigger boat for that engine! Good luck in your build and feel free to ask more questions.

RE: inline rudder vs duals vs right side
I see your point. Question though: having to dial in some rudder angle to counteract prop walk, aren't you directing thrust away from the direction of movement? I know I have to with my boat too, but propwash isn't affected.

RE: inline rudder vs duals vs right side
I run the whh dual rudder spdIII setup on my gtx. I use it as a sport boat in calm and rough water. My thought is that two rudders is twice the control. The rudders are in clean water, like an offset, and are in the water through turns in both directions. I'm satisfied with how my boat runs. Also, two rudders doesn't necessarily mean twice the drag. The two rudders can be shorter than a single, since the boat banks into the turn dropping the inside rudder deeper. My 20 lb 65" single Zen boat tops at almost 40 mph. With a big block, I'm shooting for 50 mph.

RE: Expresscraft GTX questions
first rule of firsts: KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid. not saying you are unintelligent in any way, but for a first build, i'd recommend simplicity. my GTX was my first build and i learned enough to take on another build without hesitation. i didnt even use a twin pot engine, just a single Zen through a single drive. it works great!

RE: I just got out of jail and I'm thinking of building another boat.......I need ideas??
If you don't me asking, how much? Was price the only factor in buying this hull instead of the Class One Skater? I'm not knocking your purch; I just bought a central hobbies 53" skater. The build quality is very good, and I'm sure your mystic will be as well. As for power, if it were my build, I'd toss a couple big blocks in it and go from there. Too much more power and I would think prop selection would be limited and rigging too complicated for what you're going to be using it for. I'll be watching your build closely because I may go down the same road in the future.

RE: I just got out of jail and I'm thinking of building another boat.......I need ideas??
[quote]ORIGINAL: Ron Olson I've seen pix of the Centrl Hobbies boat and I'd pass on that one. There is too much gap in the shoebox which would require a LOT of filling in. I didn't recommend Tom Borisch's hulls because of the size of them. A lot has to be considered when owning something that big. [/quote] as said above, its not a shoebox fit. the two halves are joined in the mold, and there is some finishing to do to the seam before paint. i just purchased one for my brother for christmas and i was impressed with the glass work, especially the sharp, straight running surfaces. i definately would recommend this hull. rick (cental hobbies r/c) very helpful in the order process and kept me updated with the build progress (he builds them to order). it took about a week from paypal to receiving the hull. i think thats impressive for how well built it is, and its a great looking scale offshore cat, too. tom borisch's 72" skater is probably at least as nice, im sure. probably the way to go if budget is not an issue. i'm excited to see how the 53" moves though.

RE: Expresscraft GTX build
i've had the boat in the water almost every weekend since finishing it. finally put a GPS in it yesterday. installed a new prop from dasboata last week, and noticed a nice improvement in ride and acceleration. best i could get out of it yesterday was 38.9 MPH, which seems a little slow, but it was running consistent. i think a little chop in the water would help it see 40 MPH. or more power. a couple pics from last week: [image]http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj241/g00ds0n/remote%20control/IMG_4919.jpg?t=1287414661[/image] [image]http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj241/g00ds0n/remote%20control/IMG_4923.jpg?t=1287414564[/image]
