RE: BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
Like I said, I was moving the sticks around the whole time which is something you wouldn't normally be doing in the air. But in saying that, I don't want to be the guinea pig. I was thinking about running a flight pack, but that would mean more weight, another battery to charge and monitor and I'm now pushing for room in the fuselage. I Thanks for your help guys.

RE: BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
Alright, so I was finally able to test the BEC tonight.... Not so good. At 5 volts and moving all the sticks around (under no load), after about 2 seconds they would pause for about a second and then move again, suggesting the BEC wasn't up to the job. Doing the same at 5.8 volts  had the same results but more often. I guess that leaves me with one option - install a 10amp BEC.

RE: BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
Thanks for a great post opjose!!! I'll test the setup and then go from there! It got me worried when the manual said a separate receiver battery was needed. I guess that's because a lot of other ESCs only have 3 amp BEC and also at the end of the day, e-flite have to cover their arse!

RE: BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
What will happen if the BEC is overloaded? Does it burnout because you're drawing too much current or does it reduce the voltage? I've noticed that the ICE series of ESCs have onboard data logging. If I hook up all the servos and battery but leave the motor disconnected, could I use this to check how much the servos are pulling? I know under no load, these servos will not overload the BEC (6 x 340 = 2.04 amps). From searching on the net, I found that at 4.8v and 6v, they consume 300mAh and 340mAh respectively. My only concern is how much do they consume when loaded/stalled? Also, I found it hard to find out how much the receiver consumes. Somewhere stated 190mAh. Does that sound right?

Guys, What are the advantages and disadvantages of using multiple LiPo packs in lieu of just one? As an example, would it be better to run a 2x 4s 2500mAh LiPo connected in parallel or 1x 4s 5000mAh LiPo? Thanks

BEC 5amp enoguh for 6 servos
Hi, Quick question. I've just purchased an E-Flite 25 Ultra Stick. I was planning on using the quad flap feature. After cutting the ailerons in half I read the radio installation section and it noted that a receiver battery and switch harness must be used if using quad flap option. If I knew this was a must, I wouldn't have bothered with the extra parts and weight to the plane. So here is my question. Do I need a receiver battery or how do I check if I do? I'm running a e-flite 25 brushless, 4s lipo (not sure what capacity yet), castle creations ice 50 amp ESC (has 5 amp BEC and will program ESC to 6 volts BEC so the servos have more torque), 6x HS225MG servos, and a Hitec Optima 9 2.4ghz receiver. Thanks

What glider to get???
I love gliding!!! I am getting back into the hobby after a couple of years. I previously had a 2m Spirit and an Aplha (I think that's what it was called. A light 160cm wingspan, 2 channel glider). I use to hand launch these and also take them up on 100 metres of fishing line. I preferred the Aplha as it was light and caught thermals easier. Found it very hard to catch one in the Spirit but it was great in the wind. So... What I'm looking for... A glider with a wingspan between 2 - 3 metres. Something that is good at catching thermals and is great off a hi-start. I want something that go in a bit of wind (about 10 knots as it's windy here). Something that is FUN to fly and will fly about the same speed as the Spirit. Not sure about 2 or 4 channel yet. Any ideas??? I was looking into the Spirit Elite but heard it has the same issues as the Spirit (heavy, comes out too tail heavy with stock gear). Thanks guys!!!

Starting out in CNC
Just after information about making your own CNC machining to cut balsa, ply and foam. Table size I'm looking for is about 18" x 36" but also maybe something a little bigger. How much would it cost to make something that is capable of only cutting those materials - I'm not interested in making something so strong it can mill metal. I've heard about $1000. Once built, how hard is it to make parts? From my research on the net, some people make it sound really hard and others make it sound easy. People that have already done it , was it worth it? Do you still use your machine? Would you do it all again or recommend it to someone that enjoys building from scratch but is sick of making 30 ribs using knife ect. Thanks

RE: free swiveling tailwheel or linked to rudder
I use full castoring tailwheels on my planes and have never had a problem. I personally think it makes taxiing easier. When I want to turn I use neutral or foward stick, keeping the tail light and then when I want to go straight, I hold back stick giving the tailwheel more positive control. See how you go. You can always connect it to the rudder later.

Hi all, I'm after 8mm x 8mm balsa sticks (or 5/16" x 5/16"). Does anyone know where to get this size in Melbourne, Australia? Model Engines have stopped making this size. I've tried cutting strips from 8mm sheeting but it's not the same. They're all warped. Thanks

Hi, I've got some Senior Telemaster plans and am thinking of scaling them down to make a .40 size. What's the difference between the .40 size plans and the senior plans besides the size? I've noticed the senior has a lifting tail (flat bottom airfoil) and the mini doesn't. Thanks

My first completed CAD plans. It's a modified Sky Raider Mach 2. Has removable tail surfaces so I can modify it even more and try different things. Also designed a bomb drop to have more fun :) Next project will hopefully be in 3D. This project took me 20hrs so hopefully 3D can reduce that time.

RE: Angle of incidence?
Now looking back at the 3 view and pictures of the chipmunk, it looks like the 3 view has been simplified. +1 degree would look more scale. Still haven't decided yet. It looks like the plans use a different airfoil at the tip rather than washout. I think I'll use 2 degrees of washout. Thanks again

RE: Angle of incidence?
Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to leave the hori stab and thrust line level with the fuselage reference line and have the wing at +1 or +2 degrees. Haven't decided yet. 1 degree looks like a far bit.I'll also have to include some washout because the t/c ratio is less at the wing tip.

Hey, Just scratch building a chipmunk and have used a NACA 2415 for the main wing and a NACA 0010 for the tail plane. I've set the main wing to 0 degrees. What angle should I put the tail plane at? I was thinking somewhere between 0 and -2 degrees. Also, for the engine thrust line I was thinking 1 degree right and 1 degree down. Does that sound right? Cheers

Best fuselage construction??
Hey guys, I'm currently designing a scale 0.25/0.32 (electric) Chipmunk. Just wondering what the best fuselage construction is. There are two I'm looking at. The first one is new to me. I've seen it being used on Brian Taylor and Don Smith plans. It's box shaped with formers attached to the box to give the curvature. The second one is pretty common. Formers with stringers attached. I'm looking at planking my fuselage. What are the pros and cons of both? Thanks

Fiberglass Thermal Glider
Hi all, I'm looking at designing and building a 2 to 3 metre thermal glider. I have experience in scratch building balsa planes and making some plugs that didn't quite work out. I want the glider to have the following: - Lightweight; Can a 2 to 3 metre full composite glider be close to a balsa one in weight? - 4 channel; Ailerons, Elevator, Rudder and Spoilers. - Relaxing to fly; I'm not trying to build the fastest glider. I'm trying to build a glider that is efficient in thermals and is sturdy enough for a hard landing/ground loop. - Can fly in winds from 0-20kts. - Tow hook for hi-start launches and maybe winch launches to. I'm using a book called Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach by Daniel Raymer for initial sizing. I know the aerodynamics will be different because of the different reynolds number and wing loading ect. but I'm just using it as a starting point. Once I have the design, I'll use a RC aerodynamics book to confirm. Based on my reading so far, I'm going to design something like the following: http://www.rc-sailplane.com.au/sailplane_detail.php?gliderID=27 I saw a video on youtube nearly a year ago of a guy making a fiberglass glider (laying up the mold). I think it might've been in another language. Does anyone have the link? Thanks in advance.

RE: Bungee/Hi-start rubber
How many launches do you normally get out of a hi-start? I found out that the website (fitchrubber) was expensive. (ID x WT) 1/8" x 1/16" Out of stock 3/16" x 1/16" In Stock...$5.40 per M plus GST. So $182AUD for 100ft/30m[X(] 1/4" x 1/16" In Stock....$6.55 per M. plus GST. So $216AUD for 100ft/30m[X(] Some hobby shops here do sell it, but just the tubing. http://www.modelflight.com.au/sailplanes_rc_accessories.htm http://www.rc-sailplane.com.au/subacccategory.php?category=Launching%20systems Would the quality of the tubing change much?

Plans/scratch build project
I'm looking for a plans/scratch build project. I want it to be quick to build, fun to fly and be able to do general aerobatics so no 3D. Dont care to much what it looks like. A small design would probably be better. I want it to be fully sheeted so I can fiberglass it. I'm thinking of going glow or electric. Something around the .40 size. I have an OS46AX and an OS91FX lying around at home. Do you know of any designs or plans that come to mind???

RE: Telemaster Build
Gday, The plane was finished a while ago and is still around. Here's a movie on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKkhsMS5ZXk It flies really well. Aileron differential is a must due to adverse yaw. I use 50% on the down-going aileron and 100% on the up-going aileron. As you can see from the pictures, the ailerons were not that hard to build. Just modify 4 of the outboard ribs by cutting them a bit shorter and adding an aft spar. The ailerons are soild balsa. The servo is placed on the 3rd outboard rib and all ribs inboard have to have holes in them to allow for the servo leads. Each aileron is 25% wingspan and 20% chord. They could be made wider if you want a faster roll rate but a Telemaster wasn't really designed as an aerobatic plane. I would keep the depth as 20% chord From memory, the barrel rolls in the video are done at full throttle straight and level with full aileron deflection (but with a Slo-Flyer prop). I have not been able to spin mine. The ailerons are effective in stalls and if you keep it in a stall and use aileron, it will just wonder a bit. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anymore questions. Here's another Tele I built http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Pe7PWYyUs Cheers, Daniel
