RE: EXI-450 discussions/mods/scale projects
Oh my, I must have said something wrong in my reply above. I am not sure how you got to your conclusion. My numbers represent the amount of sub trim is showing on the display of the TX when you use your sub trim feature of your TX to move the rudder output from left to right. Does that make sense?

RE: EXI-450 discussions/mods/scale projects
ORIGINAL: S_Mackey Still a bit lost on the Gyro Settings G401B My delay is 0 Travel = 120 I tried decreasing the pitch at 50% speed in HH mode to see if the heli would stop going counter clockwise when I hit it and it does not. Also I noticed the helicopter is slightly spinning counter clockwise which emphasizes itself with lower battery I believe. Everytime I hit the throttle hard the heli goes ~90 degrees. I can't get this gyro set right with my dx6i.
If your throttle is at 50% in a hover and if you "hit the throttle" you are most likely over powering the tail. The tail can only move so much air and that amount of air is decreased with lower power and rpm settings. I would try increasing the rpm a bit more by increasing the power and decreasing the pitch. Other things to check; Make sure your linkage rod is not able to flex. If it does, you can get reduced tail authority. I was having this issue (I didn't know it at the time) with my EXI and now that I have a CopterX with a better guide system this has completely gone away. Keep turning up the gain on the TX until the tail begins to wag then decrease it a few clicks or until you notice the wag go away. If you are going from a hat car or air conditioned house to outside with a temp change, you may want to tlet the heli set for 5-10 min before your first flight so the gyro temp can stabilize. After you have competed everything above and mechanically you know everything is square and sound, Try this ...On your TX, make sure your rudder trim is set to center and Switch the gyro to Rate mode with heli unplugged and then plug in the heli. Adjust the servo location fwd and aft on the boom until you get it in a location where the tail does not drift anymore. Unplug the heli and then replug it in and let it initialize and then switch to HH mode and fly. See if this helps with the slow CC drift. If not, try the procedure below. With the heli plugged in and TX on make sure the gyro is in HH mode and Trim is set to "0" Move the sub trim to right until the light begins to blink and record the sub trim number on TX. - I.E. 20 Go back to 0 sub trim and move the sub trim to the left until it begins to blink and record that number - I.E -10 Now in this scenario the total travel between the location the light begins to blink is 30 clicks (-10 to +20 = total of 30) and so the half way point is 15 from either end of the scale And so if you go up 15 clicks from -10 or down 15 clicks from 20 the mid point is = a sub trim of 5 - Set the sub trim at this number Now once you have this set, you will want to go back and make sure everything mechanically is squared up again in rate mode

Bent Shaft
Am I out of line asking a supplier to provide a new main shaft? I purchased a 450 class heli a few weeks ago and I have had a vibration upon spool up from day one with this heli. I have also been able to see some vibration in the skids when hovering a few feet in front of me. I have been flying the heli for a week or so now and have had no crashes or hard flying for that matter. I have gone back and checked flybar, paddles and rebalanced main blades without any affect so tonight I decided to tear it down and find the issue and what I found was a bent main shaft. It flies quite well but and it really seems to be more of an annoyance than anything but the way I see it, it should be perfect out of the factory; right? So, am I out of line asking the supplier to send me a new main shaft?

i am going through heli withdrawls again... Been traveling all week and haven't had any fun with heli's other than reading what everybody else has been doing... Now I'm flying back today (actually sitting on the plane right now in Missoula MT). I should get some time in this weekend though...fun times are ahead.

RE: EXI-450 discussions/mods/scale projects
Well I have been called that before...haha I used 3-1 oil a while back on it and I think that may have contributed to the early bearing failures. No oil ever got to the tail drive gear which is why it probably was fine. Only oil to be used on the CX will be the tail slider where it rides over the shaft... and I will be using only the oil that came with the heli very lightly on the shaft.

When I tore my EXI apart to get the gear out the main shaft bearings were very notchy. Tail drive gear was fine but the mains were toast. Other bearings that went bad were the inner most blade grip bearings.
ORIGINAL: sheerider1026 yea, i don't trust them either.. they seem heavy and untrue anyways.. i am sure a set of good traking woodies will do wonders over these blades.. i do have a copterx450sev2 which i never fly.. its too pretty to take out and crash just yet.. i figured i will keep bashing the exi's for a while until my flight skills improve much more. from the way it looks, its gonna be on the shelf for a while. lol. any og you guys have trouble when using the stok tail belts?? maybe its too loose, but under hard tail action the tail buzz's and seems to be slipping.. or maybe its the plastic tail blades?? i always have thought it to be the belt.. but with a mavrikk belt and carbon tail blades, the problem has always gone away..
Yeah, I am hearing the same thing. I will try to tighten the belt a little more. I know one thing, I like having a tail that does what I want it to for change! I got two packs in today. More fine tuning and I am close. I am having a slight vibration that I can see in the skids from time to time (not constant) and I also feel the washout base is two sloppy. When the rotor speeds gets low at the end of the battery pack, the whole heli begins to wobble around. Its fine until the rotor RPM starts to drop though and its not just wallowing around, its wobbling like top about to fall over but faster. I am thinking this may also have something to do with the vibration I am seeing in the skids. I really suspec the washout base but just to rule out other items, I am going to pull the CF paddles off and replace them with stokers to see if they are the issue and I will also do a complete Center Line balance on the main blades. They are balanced but I never checked the CL and You never know. Everything else seems to be great, all the ball links are perfectly sized, no slop anywhere else and absolutely no binding.

I almost hit the ground tonight as I was testing out the fuel tube mod. With this jr 3500g servo it moves fast. Very fast (I'll work to slow it down a little before I get too crazy. I think the only thing I am going to mess with is the washout base. I am not happy with it at all and think I will swap it out with the one from my exi. If that doesnt make an improvement, I will order an Align one. I am also looking at getting one of those new V3 hubs. I have ehard a lot of good news on them. looks like it would add a few mm to the rotor span as well.

RE: EXI 450 thread
So, I have been having a little bit of an issue with the tail bouncing and so last night I did the fuel tube mod and wow! what a diff! The tail has absolutely no play and is rock solid. Unlike anything I have flown before. Now all I need to do is work to reduce my pyro rate. I have expo dialed in at 25% and its still wicked fast at barely any stick movement. I think I will just keep adding expo till it feels good. Also have a slight (very slight) vibration that I think is coming from the paddles but I am not sure. I am using CF paddles with no weights. What I noticed while putting it together is that one paddle was trimmed a little more than the other making it just a little thinner. I suspect this paddles is tad lighter and so I will try adding a little tape to see if it helps. Other than those items this thing will pretty much hover on its own. Well at least as long as a 450 will hover on its own...if you know what I mean... Now we are havin some fun!
ORIGINAL: babyhuey FYI, I fired up the Protos yesterday and WOW! It sounds like a pissed off jet powered tornado! The tail servo that I installed just to get it going isn't up to the task so I couldn't get the wag out of the tail. The instructions for the gyro says to shorten the servo arm. Does that sound right?
'Shorten the servo arm' or move the ball in on the servo arm? If you haven't already reduced the amount of gyro gain to eliminate the wag and haven't tried adding a little delay, this should help. Moving the ball in closer to the center will decrease the sensitivity by reducing the amount of travel provided so keep in mind when you do this you will want to increase your endpoints to compensate.

RE: EXI 450 thread
ORIGINAL: S_Mackey Wow, This heli is so much easier to fly than my Falcon 40. It is stable, doesn't get taken away by wind. Quite a worthwhile investment! Gyro Problem The gyro is not holding the tail in headholding mode. The nose slowly rotates counterclockwise. Also when I give it harder throttle the gyro lets go of the tail and it emphasizes the counter-clockwise motion much greater. My current gains on the DX6i are. 75/30. Do I increase the HH? I have only been using it on the 75% which I am assuming is the HH mode, Light on G401B. Thanks guys.
I posted this on the other EXI thread and have had reports that it works. I was having the same exact issue before I was grounded several months ago. I wound up correcting it with a little sub trim using the process below but as a brief explanation here you go; if you watch the light on the gyro while in HH mode it will begin to blink if move the rudder stick or move the sub trim to far to the left or right. and so what I noticed was it wasn't the same in both directions and what I wound up doing was finding the actual gyro center by using the rudder sub trim by watching when the light came on when I used sub trim in for each direction . I don't remember my actual numbers that I came up with but as an example; With the gyro in HH mode - Start at 0 sub trim then move the sub trim to right until the light begins to blink and record the number. - I.E. 20 Go back to 0 and move the sub trim to the left until it begins to blink and record that number - I.E -10 Now in this scenario the total travel between the location the light begins to blink is 30 clicks and so the half way point is 15 from either end of the scale And so if you go up 15 from -10 or down 15 from 20 the mid point is = a sub trim of 5 - Set the sub trim at this number Now once you have this set, you will want to go back and make sure everything mechanically is squared up again in rate mode I may sound crazy but it worked for mine. RE: EXI-450 discussions/mods/scale projects
Did you see the EXI250? looks cool! I got the CX in the air this morning. Wound up having to cut the linkage rods connected to the blade grips to get 0 pitch with everything centered and square on the head. I also noticed a little vibration on spooling up and so I will check blade balance before we fly again. I need to work on dialing the tail in because it tends to bounce a little. I dialed a little delay in it and it helped but I think it needs some more. I think I will also do the fuel tube mod to eliminate any pay in the linkage. I spent a lot of money on this JR tail servo and I am not going to let some silly linkage play eliminate any advantage it may be giving me. Other than that and the fact I havent flown in 4 months it was fun! Overal, I am impressed with this kit. Everything seems to fit very well and moves very smoothly. I do have one item I am unsure of and that is the mixing arm base. The brass sleeve that rides up and down on the main shaft is a bit sloppy allowing for a bit of slop in the flybar cage. I dont know. Guess I will just have to keep an eye on it.

I was looking at that one too. My reason for not going that rout had to do with specialized parts specific to this model like the belt and frame parts. Looks like it would be more efficient though.

RE: EXI 450 thread
So...Noob, this is going back a ways but why did you start your own EXI Thread. I find it difficult to know where to post between this thread and Crash's thread. I guess both of these threads are really geared towards EXI's and so maybe I should start my own showing the build of the CX450AEV2??? Or maybe we should just start a new general 450V2 Clone thread for anybody with a clone of the Trex 450SEV2??? That way it doesn't matter which brand it is because they are pretty much all identical anyways??? At least in design.

RE: EXI-450 discussions/mods/scale projects
In response to my above email, the CX showed up today. 1 Week is good, I just wish USPS would update their info a little more often. I looked it over already and other than color, I cannot distinguish any differences between the CX450AEV2 and an EXI450 standard addition with all alum parts including frame components. It looks as though the compoents were made in exactly the same factory. The only real differences I could see between the kits was the level of assembly required, rudder push rod and landing gear. The EXI comes 85% assembled and the CX is more like 40/50% assembled (head, frame, tail box are assembled individually but not assembled together the way the EXI's come). The CX has a rudder push rod guide tube with a total of 3 mounting points (guides) and the EXI only has a the metal push rod and 2 mounting points or guides. The landing gear on the CX is more of a square design and the EXI is swept forward a bit. I am ok with all of these changes. The landing gear is stronger and I know this because the set I replaced on my EXI is exactly the same. The Push rod tube and additional guide point is great for obvious reasons. The level of assy is ok too because I will be dissembling everything anyways to ensure locktite is used and everything is assembled properly. I also feel this will make installing electrical components, motor and servos a bit easier. My only complaint so far is how the drive belt was packaged. It was wrapped tightly around the tail box and after unwrapping it, it has some memory and doesn't lay flat. I will let it hang for a day or two with a little weight to straiten it out as much as possible. The reason this bugs me has to do with trying to fish it through the tube and ensuring it is in the correct orientation inside the tube when fully assembled. Its just easier when the belt isn't a twisted up mess. I will post pics as I move through the build.

RE: Trex-450 kit questions
ORIGINAL: snowboarder6009 Thanks again for the posts everyone. My budget is just not big enough for all the awesome parts I want. I'm looking at a couple different 450s(Beam E4, ChopterX, EXI, Trex). My main question is about the electronics though. I know many people would get the following combo 430XL motor, BL35X ESC, Futaba GY401, Futaba S9650, Hitec HS65MGs. Ones are not cheap parts but because I'm a beginner can I get some parts that cost less? I figure ill spend a couple months learning to hover and just getting it in the air and since I'm going to crash I really dont want to replace expensive parts. So I would rather ger some cheaper parts that I can learn with..hover, etc. and then as I crash and get better upgrade to some better parts. Is this a bad idea? If not can you suggest a few parts. Thanks
I completely understand and I thought the same thing. the unfortunate thing is that with cheaper parts you will crash more. this would be due to less precision and parts failing prematurely. I for one had to learn that llesson the hard way and in the end waisted a bit of money on junk that now sits idle. Trust me when you are replacing 50% of the parts on your heli for the 3rd or 4th time because of a servo or esc failure you will be wishing you went with higher quality components.

RE: Trex-450 kit questions
I would agree on the EXI (I have one). Good heli for the money. Also look at eHirobo and the CX450AEV2. This is an all alum trex clone (exactly like an SEV2 minus the CF Frames) for $82 shipped to the US. Then stick as much cash into the electronics as you can afford. These are the items you can move from heli to heli. Things that I would have done to start if I could do it over again would be - wait first let me say this...What ever you do, do not by anything Esky!!! (sorry for all you Esky guys and gals out there, but I have had 3 Esky Heli's and I will never...ever...ever buy another). When choosing servos, look for precision over speed (I like digital) and go with metal gears; they will last longer and give you more control. When choosing TX/RX make sure you get 2.4Ghz; it eliminate the long antenna and you dont have to worry about interference between you and others. When choosing ESC get at least 40/45amp ESC with at least 3amp BEC; this will ensure enough power will be supplied to the motor and the electronics When choosing gyro make sure you get a good HH Gyro and a digital servo designed for rudder usage; the gyro will give you more confidence and the rudder servo will compliment the gyro. My $.02

Oh Yeah, and My CX450 is on its way however I think it has to fly itself. eHirobo shipped it via air mail the same day I ordered it and the tracking listed it leaving HK last Thursday. No other tracking info has been update to the USPS website sense then as it as loaded on a plane and that plane is still flying over the Pacific, a week later. Gota love the USPS...$23 for shipping and they have no idea where it is... All I want to do is fly a helicopter! Also, I tore the EXI apart and found the blade grip inner bearings and the main shaft bearings were very notchy. Ill change out the main gear as you suggested and get the align tail drive gear also. I was lookning at getting another heli after I get this rigged up and become really proficient with it instead of constantly upgrading everything. Copter X All aluminum or something similar but this exi is a blast and just wanting more out of it. So your good with the 13 tooth pinion I have? Thanks, Jeff
Jeff, Take a look at this site if you haven't yet. [link=http://dhrc.rchomepage.com/calcAdvanced.htm]Dark Horse[/link] Using the Dark Horse calculator you should be able to come to a good theoretical rotor speed and flight time based upon your setup. I personally think the 13T should be fine but keep in mind you don't have to use all the of that RPM. One way you can keep head speed down and lengthen flight times is to set your throttle curve lower. This will lower your head speed and reduce the amount of power required. with the 13T on there you can get head speed of up to about 3000rpm but I would say 2200-2400 is a good speed for basic flight. As an example I am using a 3800KV motor with a 12T and it rips up to that 3000rpm range but in order to keep it under control, I have my throttle curve set to 50% for hover (mid stick) in "normal mode" and about 65% in Idle 1 (sport flying) and 75% for Idle 2 (3D). Obviously pitch is lower as power is increased or the heli would take off when you flip the switch.

Ok...Here is the challenge...I want to see a pink Foam Heli...Materials must be available from HMD or Lows. I know someone can do it! Well I have left the EXI world. Went with the [link=http://www.ehirobo.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=334_174&products_id=5578]CX 450AE v2[/link]. Sorry guys, couldn't beat the price of only $20 more than the EXI v2 but you get an alum bird.
