RE: Yellow Aircraft F/A-18 Twin Turbine onversion
I haven't done the conversion but I did own one for awhile. The D/F version has a weak main wing bulkhead at the front of the engine hatch that MUST be reinforced for turbine use. There just isn't much strength in the area above the inlets. Mine was converted long before I got it and was flown extensively. I gutted it when I got it, cleaned up the internals and built a new turbine mount. It weighed 35 pounds dry with a Merlin 160 and was a hoot to fly. BTW Carlos, mine used 2 dubro 40oz tanks next to the turbine and a dubro 50 oz in front of the inlet
Once again...pivot point also too far back one problem right there.
Here is a pic of the FEJ 1/6th scale F-18 stab with pivot location marked. It appears to me to be correctly placed, but I'm not sure. Can someone else take a look? BTW - this is on a HC version with 11 flights on it. No flutter.

How do you figure the MAC of a stab with a sawtooth leading edge. Just curious about the pivot point on my F-15.

RE: New blog article: all-flying stabilizers part 1
Thanks for the explanation. I think I understand now how important it is for the pivot to be in the right place.
But at some point when the plane is ageing, tightness will decrease, flexibility increase, and the resonating frequency of the aerostructure will meet the oscillation frequency of the stabilator.
So if the pivot shaft is not properly anchored in the stab (as in soft balsa or honeycomb material) it WILL develop play in the shaft sooner than later.

RE: New blog article: all-flying stabilizers part 1
So in theory, for these profiles, the rotation axis of the flying stabilizer shall be placed at 25% of MAC to achieve a neutral balance state at all flight regimes.
Because of the FEJ threads this keeps coming up. My questions is: Lets say the manufacturer of the jet kit or arf, got it wrong and the pivot point is at 30% instead of 25%. Is this a huge problem or does it just mean that there will be more load on the servo so a more powerful servo is needed. I guess I am asking if you have enough power and have the geometry of the linkage maximized, can you get away with it?

RE: Jets and burn bans
the fireman I talked to said that he didn't see any legal issues with flying because if you did have a problem it would be accidental.
The local Fire Marshal told me the same thing. But that does not absolve you from liability if your jet crashes and causes a fire resulting in property damage. The lawyers are going to come after you for choosing to fly in conditions that you knew might be more likely to cause a fire that could not be immediately contained. The layout of the flying site and the surrounding terrain have a huge bearing on how quickly one could get to and put out a fire. My old flying site had a large part of the overflight area that is fairly hard to get to, especially carrying fire equipment. There were also several homes that were fairly close in proximity. Due to these reasons, I choose not to fly during burn bans, there. A couple of years ago, that meant I did not fly a jet from March until November.[&o]

RE: Need Some Advice From the Experts
the EU1A, like most of the old school pattern planes, provides jet like performance and the precision needed to practice for our the expensive sport jets
Would love something like this to practice with but a little larger for a gas engine like a DLE20 or 30. Don't want to go glow. Been thinking about getting Limeybob to blow up and lazer cut an all wood pattern plane if I can find one that looks decent, i.e. jet-like.

RE: Dayton D.O.G.S
The only reason I remember it is 140" is because I had a T-38 that had an 86" long fuse, but did not qualify as a big bird because the wing was only about 48 or 50". I was not allowed to fly. This was quite a few years ago.

RE: George Miller F-4 Build - also, welcome George!
And the first thing Tom does is put it in a shallow dive to make a high speed pass over the runway. It never came out of the dive. Straight into the runway and it wasn't pretty from there. The stab mechanism had failed.
George, The stab mechanism did not fail. The stab servo was not up to the task (not enough torque). After that one crashed there were 2 more of your phantom kits built with twin Dynamax power, one with .77s and one with .91s. Both flew at top speeds much much higher than any of the Byron powered F-4s and the JMP stab mechanisms were just fine. My twin .77 powered one was as fast as my Starfire IIb which was clocked at 190 mph on several occassions.
