Airtronics Service is the Greatest!
OK, this is huge ATTABOY for Airtronics. I have been an Airtroincs user for years. I currently have the SD10G and love it. I still have 2 working Competition Series 7 channel radios, a working Vision 8 channel, a still in very good shape 8 channel Stylus (all now retired). I just wadded up my 60 pound 1/3 scale L19 Bird Dog. It lost both stabs in flight and the airplane went in nose first. We had to dig the DLE111 out of the dirt. I actually have a video of the crash if you are interested. When I got everything home in many trash bags, I pulled the radio out and plugged everything in. All of the Airtronics MG digital servos were working. The standard Airtronics digital servo mounted behind the engine was crushed. The 10 channel receiver worked (it was still bound!) but I was concerned that after that kind of a crash something might be loose inside. So off it went to Airtronic's service department. It got to them yesterday and I got a call today that the receiver was not damaged and the total cost including postage back to me was about $20. Great product! Great service! Great value! Thanks Airtronics! Gaines

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
ORIGINAL: BadLemon Gaines Full flaps would be the next thing to try also on 8 cells you where getting some good speed out of it at 60% throttle have you tried 7 cells? This would remove some weight, also you said you where coming back with half packs maybe going down the 4000 packs would reduce some more weight as well. How high is your wing loading?
I keep coming back to using what works for me. I like having the extra power the 8 and 9 cell packs give me. The difference between a 5000mah pack and a 4000mah pack in the Zippy brand I am using is 4.5 ounces. That's 9 ounces total weight savings. Really not enough to see any difference on the landing speed. When I buy new batteries after these wear out I may go to 4000. Wing loading with the 8cell pack is 45.38 ounces per square foot. The second underpowered Bronco came in at 47 ounces.

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
ORIGINAL: SteveD-RCU Looked nice..a little longer approach might slower down some...nice job
Steve, You may be right but I've had the best luck with a steep approach and a flair right at the edge of the runway. This slows it down and usually results in a slower landing right in front of you. When we fly at Hatbox the full scale runways are so long I have a hard time judging where the imaginary edge of the runway is. The video was of the first flight of the day and I did get a bit better at hitting the mark that day.

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Danny was finally able to get the video of my Bronco posted. A few things to note: She takes off like all Broncos. Rotates and heads for the sky. Scared me the first few times but I'm getting used to it now. I need to us more rudder in the turns or couple some rudder with the ailerons. I was using the 8 cell packs on this flight. Take off was at full power. Most of the flight was at about 60% power. Landing was a bit fast but at 24 pounds she wants to stall if you get it too slow. Both takeoff and landing was with 1/2 flaps. I'm going to try full flaps on the next landing to see it I can slow it down some. Your observations? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5qBknWNTdI&feature=plcp

Bad News!!! Craig just called me back and the offer is off the table. Shortly after I posted the fact that Craig would help us out by making the mold and pull some canopies, he got a call from Rich. Craig would not say much except that the call was very unpleasant. So unless Rich can fix this problem we are without a source for the canopies and I am done trying to help.

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
Guys, I just got off the phone with Craig at Fiberglass Specialties and he has reluctantly agreed to make a mold and pull these canopies for us. When I say reluctantly he doesn't feel there is enough demand to justify the cost of the mold and setup to do these larger canopies. He is doing this as a favor for us. He warned that there would be some minor loss of quality when copying a canopy like we are asking him to do. So we shouldn't expect the same quality that would be obtained from Rich's machined and polished aluminum mold. I will get one of the canopies in our club mailed to him early next week and will follow the progress with Craig. Gaines

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
ORIGINAL: aeroscale Little help here, guys. The continued (and future) availability of plastic parts, including canopies, for my OV-10 is dependent purely on finding a supplier willing to produce the parts. I have production quality (read $$$) aluminum molds and they have spent more time traveling around the country than I have. Lots of companies are capable of providing the service but I'm afraid you guys would not be willing to pay the price they want in small quantities. If any of you know of companies willing to undertake the task, I'm all ears. I'm not talking about your fellow club member who just retired and has a shop vac that's not doing anything and is thinking about going into business. The level of quality I'd expect is the same that you would demand for the price you'd pay. I've been trying to secure a supplier for quite some time now and it hasn't yet been fruitful. Would love to hear from you. Rich
Rich, I'm going to jump in here with my opinions (and probably get Bar-B-Cued for them). Over the years since you published the design, I have bought 9 of your canopies for the 81" Bronco for me and friends building this great design. We still have 2 uncut that we are hoarding. If I remember correctly you were charging about $12.50 plus shipping for them. At the time I thought that was ridiculously cheap for the quality we were getting. Now that I have started producing my own molds and canopies for various other scale projects I can truthfully say $40-50 for a quality canopy would be a great value. The only guy I know personally that could produce a quality canopy is Craig at Fiberglas Specialties but I'm sure there are others out there. If I were you I would look for the quality in small quantities and hit us with the price. You might be surprised what the market will bear. Gaines
ORIGINAL: Black Drape Hey Guys I have a couple of questions I would like to ask. Is it ncessary to use lite ply for the wing ribs. I can se using it where the wing tubes go, but why do we need it for the rest of the ribs? And, I would like to know what modifications are needed to the formers to put the Sirrra retracts in. It will be a while before I can order mine. but would like to start building. Thanks guys Ron
Ron, I've built 3 of these and used the specified light ply in the first 2. I replaced most of the light ply with balsa on the last one and did save a bit of weight but not as much as I had hoped. If I ever built a 4th, I would use the light ply on the fuselage and nacelle sides and 1/8" balsa for all of the ribs. You really don't need the light ply at the wing tubes. Other builders here may have some better advice based on how they built theirs. Gaines

It acted just like my buddies EasyTiger ARF Bird Dog and my scratch built 1/3 scale. Because of the problem my buddy had with his ARF, I installed a rate gyro on the rudder of my 1/3 scale. I stubborn and made 2-3 attempts to take off without the installed rate Gyro turned on. I was all over the field and headed for disaster. I turned on the gyro and the airplane took off like it was on rails. Just something about the placement of the gear that makes the Bird Dog want to ground loop. And it will not tell you which way it is going to pull. My "old" thumbs just weren't fast enough to keep it under control. The gyro is able to dampen the erratic behavior. I also found that about 10-15 degrees of flaps help smooth out the take off as well. At full throttle for takeoff the flaps tend to keep the tail on the ground and it just takes off from the tail down position. The link below shows how tame the takeoffs are now. The first landing.....not so good[:)] I hope this helps. Gaines

RE: WARNING DLE-111!!!
ORIGINAL: mifsudm Dear all, i would like to know if any body has a DLE-111 with a three blade propeller. if so what is the approx rpm?? i am running mine with a Biela 24X10 three blade prop and have an rpm of 5400. i think it is way to low so i am asking help from any body who has a similar setup. regards Martin.
Martin, I don't know much about Biela props but that seems a bit low. My DLE111 turns a Xoar 27 x 10 2 blade at 6400. That produces a calculated thrust of over 53 pounds using Pe" Reiver's Power and Thrust Calculator. Pull tests with a digital fish scale confirms the calculations are about right. Pe does not have numbers for the 3 blade Biela but using the best numbers for a 3 blade prop (1.90) indicates that you are only getting about 31 pounds of calculated thrust. Maybe Pe will jump in here and provide some more knowledgeable information. Gaines

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
ORIGINAL: warbird51 Gaines, That is a neat installation for your batteries. I was under the impression that it took about 2 lbs. in the nose to balance the OV-10. I was planning on using the batteries in the nose instead of adding lead to balance. It look's like your batteries are on the C/G or very close. Are your batteries tied together, or does each motor have it's own batteries seprately? Wayne
Wayne, If you keep the tail feathers light you can balance the Bronco with the receiver batteries if you put then way up in the nose. If you can put your power batteries in the forward section of the fuselage then that would about assure the Bronco will balance without extra weight. I was warned off of using long leads from the batteries to the ESC. So I chose to put the batteries in the nacelle. I have since found that that is not quite the problem that was originally reported. My system uses 2 sets of 2 four cell packs. That gives me 8 cells in each nacelle and they are on the CG. If you look at the photo of the insertion of the packs you can see that I have 2 four cell packs fastened together with double backed servo tape and those run in series to give me 29.6 volts nominal. This set up worked well for me but more experienced electric guys may have a better way of getting the power to the ESC and Motor. Gaines

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
ORIGINAL: TEBerg Oh, not very unique [:)] It's just a Top Flite DC-3 Kit. I picked it up at a good price back in 2010. Was supposed to start building last year - oops, then just got going this February. Since I like to make my projects ''personal'' I found a C-53 Skytrooper here in California. Since they were primarily troop transport and paratroopers, and I skydive, I liked the idea. Then I found out this C-53 flew for the US Geological Survey - and I''M a Geologist[:D] So, that's how I decided to do the 53 instead of the DC-3 or C-47. I have not started posting yet; I do have a bunch of build photos and different little stuff I have been working on (modifying plans, making mistakes, etc.).
ORIGINAL: BadLemon Gaines I keep forgetting to ask you on RCSB to show how your battery compartment through the top of the wing turn out. Can you post some pic's, how easy is it to install and remove the battery? Doug
Doug, The battery hatches are pretty simple but seem to work well. They are made from a combination of FG composite for the hump fairing into the nacelle and reinforced balsa sheet on the wing. The hole had to be large enough to accommodate the 8-10 cell packs I thought I might use and to get my big hands into the opening to plug up the wires. Photo #1 - Is a close-up of the hatch installed on the wing. Photo #2 - Show the bottom of the hatch construction. Photo #3 - I use 4 rare earth magnets to secure the rear of the hatch and ply tabs to hold the front. I was concerned that air could get under the front of the hatch during flight. Photo #4 - Shows the insertion of my 8 cell battery pack. Photo #5 - The battery pack is secured in position with HD Velcro. Photo #6 - There is just enough room to handle and connect the wires before flight. Photo #7 - The hatch has been reinstalled ready for flight. Gaines

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81
ORIGINAL: warbird51 Gaines, Thanks for the info. So as I understand the info, with the master airscrew 14/9 3 blade, you are pulling 47 amps, 1482 watts at 8700rpm and 8 cells. Is that correct? What would be your guesstimate for the speed at full throttle? Did you feel that you had enough power with your set up? I too want to run the 3 blade props. Where did you get the spinners? Wayne
I'm a novice on electric flight so I spent a lot of time researching, asking questions, and then testing my power systems. But I am sure more experienced electric power guys could have done a lot better. Here is what I have and how it performed during my tests. Motors: Common Sense E-90-3 325KV 64 amps max rated at 2213 watts on 10 cells (I'm using 8 cells) ESC: HobbyWing 70A Platinum-70A-HV Battery: 8 cell (2 - 4 cells in series) Zippy 30C 5000mah Props: Master Airscrew 14 x 9 3 blade Performance info from testing: Thrust in Pounds Prop Amps Watts RPM Prop Calculated Measured Combined MPH Notes MAS 14 x 9 - 3 Blade 47.44 1482.3 8700 1.35 9.78 11.2 22.4 74.1 MAS 16 x 8 - 3 Blade 63.51 1946.6 8200 1.35 12.67 62.1 Amps too high Bam 17 x 6 - 2 Blade 55.85 1678.8 8200 1.3 12.75 13.6 27.2 46.6 JFX 14 x 8 - 3 blade E 50.1 1562.4 8600 1.4 11.98 65.2 Xoar 16 x 8 - 2 Blade 60.95 1897.5 8300 1.4 12.99 13.5 27 62.9 Amps too high JFX 15 x 10 2 Blade E Will test this week The calculated thrust came from Pe Reivers Power/Thrust calculator. The measured thrust was running both motors hooked up to a digital fish scale. The calculated and measured thrust is for one motor. The combined is for both motors. The trick is to pick the best prop for both thrust and speed. I have a 15 x 10 2 blade coming that may be the best of all tested but I really like the scale 3 blade look so may stay with the 14 x 9 3 blade.

Wayne, The data table got scrambled by the website. The numbers you quote are correct. The calculated airspeed was 74.1 mph. I think that was about right at full throttle. Plenty of thrust and speed to fly the Bronco. I felt that at just above 1/2 throttle it was at scale speed. The 14 x 9 Master Airscrews are not the best performing prop in the mix but for scale appearances they worked very well. The spinners are stock 2 1/4" Tru Turn 3 blade spinners from Tower. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&P=SM&I=LXHME9 The 2 1/4" spinner that Rich uses is a bit small.
