RE: Are the new Thunder Tiger 40s actually 46s?
Yep...100 MPH average. We put a radar gun on about 12 - 15 'Raiders and LA racers (w/ TT pro and GMS .40) to gather data for the 540-B sheet. Straight line speeds (for racers that were competitive in our group) were 98 - 102 MPH. That is where the 100 MPH average came from. The second reason we all agreed to stay with the .40 is that it could be transferred to a viper / predator and run in 424 class. 46's are not allowed there either. Club 40 was imagined as a "stepping stone" to the faster classes of pylon racing. I don't mean to hijack the thread...just a little history.

RE: Are the new Thunder Tiger 40s actually 46s?
IMO - if the sky raiders with a .46 are lapping a "properly set up, and reasonably flown" LA racer with a TT .40, THEN you are in all likleyhood exceeding the "break out" speed required for the short course in the safety code (540-B).

RE: TT Pro 40 Muffler?
Sorry, but I can't help but laugh at all the attention being paid to the muffler outlet size. We did all the testing 4 years ago and determined that there was NO benefit to drilling out the "Stinger" or removing the baffle! IIRC - We posted the results on this site! Jim Duda did all the testing again recently with the same results. There is a lot more benefit to reducing size of / removing head shims than from any mod on the muffler! IMHO - You are trying to find an answer to a problem that does not exist!

RE: LA Racer 40 - Mini servos in the wing
Don, I will keep responding until some one objects... What you are describing is a "People not following instructions" problem...Not a hardware problem. I've used bubbleless tanks for as long as I can remember. It has saved many engines from an early grave. Like any thing else, it requires a few minutes to learn how to use them (and fill them) properly, but does NOT offer any SPEED advantage. They DO offer a great RELIABILITY advantage. I used a 4 oz. Jett tank. With a properly functioning tanker, I would run 3 races before returning to the "fueling station" to re-fill the tanker. How is this slowing things down? BTW - if you have to leave your hemostats on them, you are most likely over filling them.

RE: LA Racer 40 - Mini servos in the wing
I don't want to step on any toes, so forgive me if I do. The discussion of whether twin wing servo's was a legal modification to the SRM2 was very loud and contentious when I was still active in the sport! there was talk of just putting the LA racer wing on the SRM2, of allowing 2 servo's inside the fuse and many other designs. There was never any evidence that this mod made any difference in the speed of the SRM 2 airframe, but it was noted that it DID improve SAFETY. There were several instances where a minor mid air would damage one of the wing servo's in the LA racer and the plane could still be landed with the other one. On the SRM 2, a hit often stripped the single aileron servo (or broke the control horn or servo arm) and usually resulted in a total loss of control. In the end, we just stated that 2 wing servo's were allowed and left it at that. I, and many others at that time, ran mini servo's in the LA racer. We also experimented with flaperons, flap and elevator mixing etc. We had one pilot that used 2 mini servo's inside the fuse of an SRM 2, and while it was a novel set up, it did not help him when pitted against "The Jasons"! In the end, all of these "Improvements" did not make much difference. The pilot that learned how to fly SMOOTH around the pylons usually ended up with the win. BTW, Ken and Don - I still have the original "allowable modifications list" if you would like it. e-mail me- chuckstt@gvtc.com

Thanks for the welcome guys! It will be great to see all of you again! I'm afraid I will not be flying in the race. I have not had a transmitter in my hand since the first "Champ Race". Eddie is still flying some so maybe I can pit for him. I will try to get hold of Eddie tonight and see how he feels about it. Freddy - not sure if I can make the Hico race. I am hosting a Bow fishing tournament that night on lake Buchanan. Might be able to make it up for a little bit...I will see.

RE: 2012 RCPRO Club 40 National Championship Race
Wow! I just dug this up and it sure brings back memories!! This was the write up from the first club 40 Championship race.... Saturday, November 1st, 2008 Lester Field (ARCA) Austin, TX The day broke with a slight chill, but that was not to last very long. As the competitors arrived, the field transformed into a spectacle. The pilots were loose and anxious, and trash talking was heard across the field. Would the “Young Guns with their exceptional eyesight and reflexes be able to hold off the experience and cunning of the “Old Geezers? Or would the “Old Geezers open up a Texas size can of “Whop Ass? This was “The big one and every pilot knew they would be tested to the limit on this day. All the previous winners were there to do battle. Pilots from Dallas, Houston, New Waverly, Georgetown, Waco, Canyon Lake, San Antonio and all points in between were there to compete in the first annual - “Texas Club 40 Championship CD Jim Duda started the pilot briefing with a description of the new timing system developed by Stan Douglas et al. After a brief familiarization with the rules and safety procedures, we were ready to race. The first race of the day set the pace for what would be one of the greatest races I have ever attended. All four pilots were previous winners in the circuit. All four were ready to prove they were the best on this day, and they did not disappoint! The race was very close, with the lead changing several times. In the end, Bob Petrinec showed every one he was here to win. His time of 1:27.05 was just the beginning of a day when 6 pilots would turn in times faster than the current record time for this group. The heats continued at a rather frantic pace of 4 ½ minutes from “Flag to flag. By lunch time, the top pilots were staking their claim on this race. Jason Oliver and Tim Purcell were perfect through 3 rounds, with Bob Petrinec and Jeff Large only 1 point behind. After a half hour break for lunch, we continued on with renewed vitality and the racing got even more brutal. Round 4 heat #2 was a classic match up! This could have been dubbed “The Old Geezers Final. Standing on the pilots line were more than 100 years of racing experience: Bob Petrinec, Freddy French, Chuck Waller and Terry Large calling for Bob. The race was extremely close until the final few laps when Bob pulled ahead while setting a new record time for our group of 1:19.68! Chuck took 2nd with Freddy close behind. Round 5 was a turning point in the race. After going perfect for 4 rounds, Tim Purcell stumbled in the 5th with a double cut and no points. Jason Oliver finished in 3rd place in his heat and Jeff Large ended up in 2nd place in his heat. This would set up one of the best races of the season. Round 6, heat #5…The next to last heat of the season, featured Jason Oliver, standing at 18 points, Tim Purcell, at 16 points and Jeff Large with 18 points. Waiting in the wings were Jason Duda with 22 points, Chuck Waller with 19, Gary Fisher, Freddy French and Terry Large with 18 points each! The race was every thing we expected. All three pilots flew an exceptional race with several lead changes and more than one close call! About lap 7, Tim had a cut at pylon #2. Jeff and Jason continued the battle right to the finish line with a “Photo finish! In the end, Jeff Large edged out Jason by 14 hundredths of a second! 1:22.63 to a second place 1:22.77. The Top 10, ranked by Points. (ties were broken by fast time) Jason Duda 22 points 1:20.33 Jeff Large 22 points 1:22.63 Jason Oliver 21 points 1:22.77 Chuck Waller 19 points 1:28.62 Gary Fisher 18 points 1:26.36 Freddy French 18 points 1:28.15 Terry Large 18 points 1:28.59 Tim Purcell 18 points 1:29.15 Bob Petrinec 17 points 1:19.68 ** New Record!! Eddie Flesher 17 points 1:27.98 *Ken Hopson 17 points 1:31.60 (11th place due to best time) In the end, this was the best race we have ever had and will be the benchmark for all events in the future. The new timing system developed by Stan Douglas worked flawlessly and allowed us to run more heats in less time than any race I have attended. The pilots were very professional while still having a great deal of fun! If you needed something, any thing, some one was there to help you out. This included loaning out a complete airplane for a competitor to fly against you! The Austin Radio Control Assn (ARCA) field was in excellent shape and the club members treated us to a great lunch and lots of Texas hospitality. The weather was absolutely perfect! Mid 80’s, light wind and low humidity made for a very enjoyable day and some very fast times. Our sponsors for this race were very generous and helpful. A special thanks goes out to: Airborne Models, 2nd Chance Hobbies, RCPRO and Stegall Hobbies, Chuck Esh and Sonaloma Laser, Safe-T-Train, Inc., Power Master and Ritches Brew. Thanks to these sponsors, our award table was over flowing with nice prizes and awards. Also, a very special “Thank You to our volunteer officials. We must remember that without them, it would be very difficult to hold a race. Our officials were: Jim Duda (Race announcer and CD) Stan Douglas (timing system operator), Bernard “Crash Siegel (Score Keeper), Bill Black (starter), Mark Weiss and Bill McCann (Pylon judges), Andy Clapp, Pat Duffey, Donny Donohue and Morris Duet. All of our officials received a nice award for their service. We also held a raffle for the officials only, giving them a choice of any thing on the prize table! We also put their names into the hat with the pilots for the over all raffle which included: 2 LA Racer ARF’s, 1 Sky Raider Mach 2 ARF, a New TT Pro 40 motor, 5 Transmitter stands, 15 Transmitter bags and 2 gallons of Power Master fuel. Winners of the raffle were: Morris Duet, LA Racer; Rafael Ladesma, LA Racer; Jason Oliver , Sky Raaider Mach II; Chuck Esh, TT Pro 40; Almost all the other pilots and officials received either a transmitter bag or a transmitter stand. I thought this would be a close race overall, but I had no idea it would end up so closely packed at the top! In the end, the eyesight and reflexes of the “Young Guns overcame the experience and patience of the “Old Geezers! However, on this day, it did not matter. Friendships were strengthened, respect was gained by all. Every one had a great time and from what I heard after the race, the rivalries will again resurface when we start the next great season of RCPRO Club 40 racing in Texas! Chuck

RE: Club 40 Rules Enforcement
Would y'all mind a suggestion from an old "Has Been" in this class? Bob, you were around near the beginning in San Antonio and should remember how we dealt with this at that time...simply re-institute the "Engine Claiming Rule"! Establish an average retail price for a new engine and implement the rule. Any engine may be claimed by any contestant for this price after a race. This rule put an end to the threat of cheating immediately because who would put the extra money into an engine if he could loose it after only 1 race?? IIRC...I was the only one that actually claimed an engine under this rule in our area, but we never had a problem with modified engines!! All in all though, it never really mattered. The best pilots would win no matter what they were running! I may try to check in a little more often to see how y'all are doing! Chuck Waller

RE: .25 size racer
Hey Duane - We already have an established and thriving Club 40 class here in Texas. If you start a group up in your area, I am sure several of our bunch will come up and fly with you on occasion. You could also come fly with our group and enter the next Texas Club Racing Championship! Why try to "reinvent the wheel"? The Sky Raider mach II is $10.00 more than the wings maker plane and can be ready to fly in less than 3 hours! Your bushing 40 would fly in the current Novice class and later move up to the TT Pro 40 for advanced class. If you need more info - e-mail me! Chuck

Every one had a great time and from what I heard after the race, the rivalries will again resurface when we start the next great season of RCPRO Club 40 racing in Texas! What IS RCPRO Club 40 Racing? The phenomenon that is club 40 racing has seen a tremendous rise in popularity over the last few years. What started as a few guys getting together to have a little fun, has grown into a National “Obsession. The concept of club racing has seen varied levels of popularity in the past. “Club 40 racing has brought out a new excitement. By using an inexpensive ARF and “off the shelf 40 size sport engines, it has gained a lot of popularity from sport pilots that have never raced any thing, and from “retired racing pilots that enjoy a slightly more leisurely pace. The idea of Club 40 racing is to encourage sport pilots to come out and compete. To keep things even for all pilots, the aircraft are limited to the World Models Sky Raider Mach II, or the LA Racer by the same company. We also limit power plants to “Sport .40 size engines. Some areas have an “Approved engine list and others use a price cap to limit the available engines. To limit the “Intimidation Factor we fly on a rather short 2 pole course. This allows the pilots to fly “out in front of them selves as they do in sport flying. Club 40 is easy to fly and because of the smaller 2 pole course, it can be enjoyed at smaller fields around the country. At present, there are groups actively racing from Florida to California and from North Carolina to South Texas. It is also a great way to get new pilots interested in racing. After they are hooked, they will want more speed and some will move up into the faster classes. For a complete list of rules and specifications, go to: http://www.rcpro.org/html/rules/club_40/club_40.htm Get a few friends together and start your own club 40 group. It is fun relaxing entertainment at minimal cost. Chuck

RE: NEW THREAD - Results of Club 40 Texas Champ Race
WOW!!! What a day! Absolutely the best race I have been to, in ANY class! Great people, fantastic flying and some great volunteer officials made this a race to remember! Many heats where all 4 planes were "nose to tail" for the entire race. And to top it off, I only remember 4 planes damaged! 2 totaled and 2 which will fly again. Time for a little rest, then I'll get some final results posted.
