RE: Carbon-Z Yak batteries
You can do either one , and it is important that no one cell gets over or undercharged.

RE: Carbon-Z Yak batteries
Many of us are exceeding the manufacturer's max rates on many lipos. I am not familiar with your specific batts , but many of mine are charged at 5-15 times the max rate listed on the pack. Each pack should be evaluated to see it's own specific max rate. There are a few different schools of thought on how to determine the max rate , but many are very reluctant to mention it because of liability. Unlike when using and/or discharging packs there is somewhat of a "safety net" when charging (the cv routine of most all lipo chargers)

Thanks guys. I'll not worry any about it. I'll just continue to put my CG where I want it (never adding wight)

RE: why are the motors SO far forward?
It's that simple then? For my particular electro-stik I am getting a slightly lighter motor and will be forced to mount it the same far forward position because I will be able to move the battery a bit forward. Thanks for your response. It is simpler than I expected. Leadershobby has WAY too many motors to choose form. [:D]

RE: Abused LiPos
I charge on demand and almost NEVER charge or discharge to a storage value. Theoretically this is what I shoot for: packs I use regularly. Pack sets at 3.7 volts/cell until I decide to use it. Charge as fast as possible and use it immediately.

RE: squealing BL motor when snapping throttle
Update on the electro-stik RXR. I find out that the factory is aware of a timing issue with the supplied motor and esc. The esc is fixed timing at 20 deg. I'm not completely convinced it is "just a timing" issue , but I also haven't re done the connections either yet. It may be cheaper to just replace the esc or the motor. ESC is pretty cheap , but so are motors too. The motor to me is PLENTY big. It is always very cool when finished flying , but I don;t push it because this plane is plenty big and fast for me right now.

why are the motors SO far forward?
It has always intrigued me why motors/props were so far forward on many of my planes. Engines for that matter too. I realise that we need to get a good CG balance , but many of mine seem to really be hanging further forward than they need to. I've not had much experience moving them , maybe only moving props a few mm forward or backward. Although one mount I installed on a nexstar mini-ep wound up being way further forward than stock. It crashed. What started this was my e-stik may need a new motor and I like using lightest stuff available. Well it is one that actually hangs the motor out front with nothing else there. Given that I want to keep the same CG and motor weight I could conceivably mount the motor BEHIND the mount (instead of ahead of it) thus moving the prop back a few inches. I could then move the battery forward to keep same CG. I guess being a car/truck nut convinces me that all weight should be concentrated in the lowest center of vehicle for a good polar moment of inertia and handling. Is it not the same with planes? (other than ability to be in many various orientations) Is there a significance to having the prop far away from LE of wing? I do have a couple of props behind the wing planes. I notice that many of my planes have the battery exactly on the CG , yet some of them are very much forward of that point. Let's say I needed to install a heavier motor instead of a lighter one. Would I then be ok to move it far back? AND the prop? Hope you kinda get what I'm asking and why. It doesn;t have to be very scientific.

RE: PZ Corsair - Hot Battery after Motor Upgrade
Well, the only thing you are "doing wrong" is overtaxxing the battery probably due to a slightly higher kv and thus higher rpm and thus current. If the motor and esc are ok then perhaps just a battery change will make it "fly" I'd sure like to see you try a new haiyin pack http://www.haiyinstore.com/products_mwh.asp?p_id=173&PID=174+&PID=175+&PID=176+&PID=177+&PID=178+&PID=232+&PID=179+&PID=180+&PID=181+&PID=182+&PID=183+&PID=184+&PID=185+&PID=186+&PID=187+&PID=231+&PID=189+&PID=127+&PID=190+&PID=191+#

RE: Running lipo batteries in series
ORIGINAL: Robert1977 Doesn't the cell count determine the volts? I was under the impression that a 2 cell lipo is a 7.4V and a 3 cell is a 11.1.  I am fairly new to this, so I am still learning. The plane I have is actually a Goldberg Eagle 63. It looks almost identical to the Nexstar which I almost bought till I found this kit on craigslist NIB. Pretty proud of the build, just haven't flown it yet.
Yes, it does. You are correct. The voltage is something that doesn't have to be equal when series running packs. We can series a 7.4 , a 3.7 , a 11.1 and a pair of 14.8 packs all at the same time as long as they use the same capacity cells. They do however have to be in the same state of charge. The nominal voltage of the pack (number of series cells) does need to be the same for doing parallel packs.

RE: Running lipo batteries in series
Welcome to RCU. The only rule for series packs is that they have identical capacity. Secondary rules are that they be same age, brand,"C" rating, ect. They of course have to be identical state of charge.

RE: Which (chinese) facctories make various brands of ESC ..?
A few that Flyzone sells. The models are made by ST models , but I don't know who makes the esc. They all look similar with a square hole in the shrinkwrap exposing a blue heat sink. One I know has a LVC of 8.77 volts with reduced power to motor and then at 8.72 it cuts power off to motor. Another I know has a fixed LVC below 10 volts and may be actually 8.77 volt. They seem to have very long servo plug AND a blue round (resistor)? at the battery end. Super Cub 18 amp esc http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLBE&P=7 FW-190 was originally listed as a 40 amp http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCKZC&P=7 Cessna Corvalis 350 a 30 amp esc http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLAR&P=7 Sensei looks identical and is a 30 amp esc http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCKZB&P=7 Acro-Wot (my next plane) 40 amp http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCMZW&P=7 I'll see if it's identical plane may be made or sold by RipMax also. I use a lot of these esc and they all are armed as soon as they are plugged in. They are simple and work well. I've only had one go bad during a prop strike. I appreciate the help and research you've done.

RE: Which (chinese) facctories make various brands of ESC ..?
ORIGINAL: DrMotor Electrifly Silver Series Brushless ESC's,  8A to 45A Which company might make these Electrifly ESC's, is an interesting question:   I have discovered it is:  INGS Bee's Electronics - <a href=''http://www.ings-cn.com/ESC/esc.htm''>http://www.ings-cn.com/ESC/esc.htm Main points: 1. The Electrifly ESC's look different from any other ESC's  -they have (what appears to be) 2 different length capacitors on the battery input side   -most ESCs have 2 identical capacitors on this side   <a href=''http://www.electrifly.com/escs/silverseries.html''>http://www.electrifly.com/escs/silverseries.html 2.  Electrifly ESC's are identical in configuration with Super Tigre ESC's (see pics) - <a href=''http://www.supertigre.com/electric-power/speed-controls.html''>http://www.supertigre.com/electric-power/speed-controls.html   The Super Tigre ESC's are available in 20A and 30A rating,  whereas Electrifly Silver Series ESC's are available  in 8, 12, 25, 35, 45A rating.  Nevertheless, Super Tigre ESC's are clearly identical in format, and obviously come from the same factory as these Electrifly ESC's. 3.  A targeted search showed that these ESC's are made by INGS Bee's Electronics, in China - <a href=''http://www.ings-cn.com/ESC/esc.htm''>http://www.ings-cn.com/ESC/esc.htm   The configuration of the Bee ESC's is clearly identical to the Electrifly and Super Tigre ESC's (see pic).  The INGS Bee ESC's are available in 15, 30, 40 and 50A  ratings (and soon 60A, so they say). 4.  The specs of the Bee 30A ESC are identical to the Super Tigre 30A ESC;  and even the parameters are listed in an identical order. The specs of the Bee 40A ESC are identical in almost all respects to the Electrifly 35A ESC. There really cannot be any doubt that  INGS Bee, Electrifly and Super Tigre ESC's  are identical,  and come from the same source. 5.  These ESC's are not really programmable -they are more ''Plug and Play''    <a href=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=615''>http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=615 The only thing which can be altered is brake on / off,  using the Tx.  They have a useful ''safe start'' feature. 6.  There seems to be no other supplier besides Hobbico (of which Great Planes, Tower Hobbies, Electrifly are a part; they distribute Super Tigre) which sell these somewhat unique ESC's. 7.  The larger Electrifly 60A and 80A ESC's  come from a different manufacturer  (see next post).
Wow, Thank you. I did over 3 hrs of research and found out 1 and 2. You are absolutely correct. I just couldn't find any more info and that link to the manufacturer must've been the only one I hadn't visited. [:)] Too bad I won;t be able to program anything. I know they are cheap ones. I had it narrowed down by wire color and those 2 different sized caps. I have lots of them, they work good and have been reliable for me. What do you think is meant by "set by PC" under the LVC. I do know what 67% is , that's pretty easy.

Here's a few of them. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0097p?CATEGORY=&MANUFACTURER=FLZ&FVSEARCH=ESC+++ They all look different to me. RE: IMAX B6 confusing me, I need to measure amps
I'm sorry if I confused you rather than helped you. The two key voltage readings we need aren't necessarily those two. We need a "resting" voltage at each end (top and bottom) The charger is capable of keeping a track on the capacity added and I have no reason to distrust the 726 mah that it lists. I've seen many inaccurate chargers and most of them have been off the other way due to inaccurate current. They are always perfect for time. They use current and time to get that number as you probably know. I can understand your concern with having an accurate way to measure capacity replaced with a-123 packs. As far as the discharge current goes you were up against your discharge wattage limit even though you set it for 5 amps. How about trying to get a total or static reading on the voltage at rest , and then discharge OR charge to get to the other end. Note the voltages and the capacity listed by the display and then another resting voltage. Balance is very important when running capacity tests. Realistically your pack might be around 1500 or so and your charger is probably very close. You could also verify the time and the current if you have the tools.
