Hi Jason, maybe the former slots need some trimming, sometimes the inside corners are a bit rounded from the cnc machine. also reinforce the splice with some thin .007 carbon, light fiberglass or tow.... cool....

Hey Jason, maybe your wood is thicker than 1/4" square. you should sand them flush to the top and bottom edges. they do need to be flush so when you attach the turtle decks you do not have any gaps.... Good on ya, mate! ...
ORIGINAL: lodomjr Well now Jon, one will not be there because it's owner will not be there. The other one, well just say if you have the VF3 why go back to the V2 [:D]. As for the VF3, which do you want the long story or the short story. Well I think I'll tell you all about it some time Saturday morning. My new VF3 is ready for glass and has been since the begining of August, but I keep running out of money. Watermelon season is now over and it will be time to get back into painting mode again. This time I hope to get it right the first time instead of the 101st time that I experienced with Chris's plane. Looking foward in seeing everyone and we will be there Friday night sometime. Lawrence
so your real busy working, but your too broke, and I am just guessing your too busy anyhow, but your too busy for the long story, and your driving all the way to huntsville to fly an old beater focus... and painting season is right around the corner... and you want to get it right the first time... Larry you lost me in all that.... just give us the long story, we got nothing better to do here....

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
Hi all, I just want to say a big thank you to everybody that helped and supported me on my road to the Nationals this year. When I started this thread 2 years ago it's almost hard to believe that VF3 in the bones in the first post would carry me to the 09 Nats and win the concours and Nats wood. It's just an amazing journey and I am very proud that I may of inspired others to become better modelers. I really enjoyed myself at this years Nats and enjoyed meeting all the new young guns, The Lampron boys - David Jr. and Dean. Riley Kissenberth, Edwin Manson, Houston and Brian. Those boys are all fine young men and have an unlimited future in RC Aerobatics. I really enjoyed having young Dean call for me for 3 rounds, we be the team of DEAN !!!!! The new young guns have great support from their dads. I've joked around about the "love fest" but it is real and it lives on site 4 at the nats. We had a great time, and shared a great experience. I want to thank everybody that voted for my plane in the concours and all the nice comments about my plane. I also want to thank the Hesters for being great friends and providing the sport with such a fine aircraft. Also thanks to my local D3 crew for all the support. It's time to start getting ready for 2010, back to gluing sticks and sanding primer. cheers! Dean

Thanks Bryan, it was a really cool project. Can't wait to see the Shark. Here are some cool pics of the foamie development and a link to a youtube movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd7RpMnTf3Q That plane does look awesome, I think it was Brian Clemons (sp?) originally named it the "Fierce" I wish that name would of stuck. The last prototype foamie is still flying and I am going to bring it to nats, for the night flying !! enjoy :)

Chris, you should think about just doing monokote and not worrying about the glass/paint. You still have to do the cowl, chin and canopy in paint and clear coat. then the rest of the plane in monokote and have a sub 10 lb plane. wish I had the money :) because that is a steal !!!!

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
no dude, that is an old graphic that Chris Odom created back from the crapoola thread days. Go back to the first few pages of the crappola thread you will see it. There are a few classics over there. Your one of the amigos dude, no worries :)... Your going to have to ask Chris to make a new update photoshop job with tres amigos. Yo Chris, Arch needs a photoshop hack job.... :) The other pic is the very first Black Magic the prototype V1. Mike actually gave it to me and I flew it well until good old Jimbo had to crash into it..... LOL - Heck I loved that plane, I first saw it at my first pattern meet and fell in love. I am hearing rumors that Mike might be doing a V1 tribute scheme on his new plane. Sorry for letting that out of the bag, but I just think that is AWESOME !!!! I loved the heck out of that prototype but took it like an man when she went down... oh heck........

RE: Free downloadable MK Curare plans
I just wanted to add my 2 cents. What Pedro offered was way more than just a scan of the MK plans. Everyone familiar with MK plans knows that they are not intended for scratch building and do not have every part outlined in detail. What Pedro did was to redraw every part and included both a vector drawing and a high quality photo of each part. The CD that he was asking for a small donation was close to 700 MB of very detailed work. The files where expertly done and could be used for laser cutting and cnc work. Just by looking at the details of this work I am sure it took over 100 hours to complete the CD with all the parts details. Being one of the modelers that purchased the CD from Pedro I felt that it was a very great deal and I considered my purchase a donation towards the time he spent creating the CD plan set. . And no where did Pedro assume credit for the actual design of the Curare. It's unfair to bash Pedro for his efforts here,

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
Cool Bill, I am busy programing my plane for the 10x - and really going through all my setups and etc... I really like the 10x so far and I like how the programming works. Should be a good transition if I upgrade to a 12x at some point. I'll be flying 72 unless my fairy godmother drops of a spectrum module in time :) I noticed a few little details that should improve my plane's performance. I am going through everything. I added a slight bit more of positive incidence in the tail. I am running close to 1/4 degree of positive in the stabs right now with about .6 degrees in the wings. Also I maybe running just a bit too much right thrust. Since I am upgrading to the 10x I am hitting a few trim issues with a small gauge shotgun. No big changes but a few little tweeks... I also want to send a big thank you out to Doug "BOPOD" Harvel !!! -dean oh ps. don't forget to send me the measurements for the graphics :)

maybe extending the blue into the chin is a good ideal, it looks a little bit cut off from the front view. maybe bring it down so the area around the opening is blue with a dagger coming off the bottom extending along the bottom of the chin....

Bill, Here is a link to another set of gear that might work, these are about as tall as the bolly large http://www.rcfoam.com/cart.php?target=product&product_id=860&category_id=121 I'm running the Bolly Large and with the sweep the plane is very tippy on grass runways. But it's really great for smooth takeoffs. I think the axels are less than 2 inches in front of my cg..... makes you wonder what the mark up is on the central gear... ;)

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
Really I don't have a bias when it comes to radios... I like how the 9303 feels when your holding it - the weight and solidness of the case, I do like the 12x and 12z and 14mz - I wish the 12FG had more of a solid feel. I know it could be to my advantage to fly the futaba stuff because my main black magic dudes fly futaba ( Mike and Arch). I really do like the high end futaba stuff, very solid. I was flying futaba before I got into pattern, when I first started out Jim Ivey was my mentor and he got me into the JR radios. I've been back and forth from Airtronics to Futaba to JR over the years..... I think in the interim I have a solution thanks to Ryan's help, he is loaning me a 10x till I get my 9303 back from service. I am also convinced I have an issue with the pots as I seemed to be getting bumps in roll and things just where not smooth... Thanks Jon for offering help as well. and thanks everybody !!!

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
Thanks all for the help.... I think it just might be worn out and the entire gimbal needs replaced. I still have a creakiness as if something in the carrier bearing is worn in the vertical. I've adjusted the steel pins, I was able to move the upper pin on the vertical axis a bit, but it didn't seem to be rubbing or bumping into anything. I actually removed the entire gimbal to see if there is any dirt or foreign bodies, reassembled and it just feels the same and weird. There doesn't seem to be any cracks or damage to the arms due to the stiffer springs. Without the springs I don't seem to feel the creakiness but with the tension of the springs there is this weird sloppy worn out feeling. I've also went back to the stock springs and have the same issue. I didn't have a lot of tension on the stiff springs to begin with as I had the adjusting screw turn up, so the stiffer springs where only just a bit stiffer than the stock springs. So I am on hold right now with horizon service. I am thinking what I need to do is have the entire right gimbal replaced. Really these sticks are just plastic assemblies and are somewhat chintzy I guess. The radio is almost 4 years old and has been service twice by horizon since new. I've been flying a lot this year. burning lots of fuel, and I think it just plum worn out.... There is definitely an issue here because I had almost one hour of flying before I noticed this problem, and it was just enough of an issue to really deflate my confidence. If there is someone out there with a back up 9303 that I might be able to borrow in the meantime that would help.

just took a quick look and it may be an issue with the stiff spring riding on the steel pin. I'll take a closer look in the light of the morning.

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
I am having a JR 9303 TX issue myself. My right hand stick is sticky and crunchy when I hold full right aileron and bump up and down elevator. Just noticed it today on my 5th practice flight. I also seem to be getting little bumps of left aileron roll when I was flying straight and level. Really weird and not cool at all. It might be time for me to break the bank and do a major upgrade. 12x or 14mz would be nice, now I only have to rob a bank :) It will be on the way to horizon tomorrow. Since I am not running any mixes I may just run my el cheapo JR 6102 until I get it back..... It's always something :)
