RE: Flying wing gliding in high winds
My first concern would be having a radio with the range to control the plane (or did you say you have on board autopilot?) When Maynard Hill was setting altitude records in the 70s, he used a directional antenna on ham freqs (I believe) If you pick your weather days carefully, you can have a flight to 35K with little to no wind drift. With a high pressure ridge practically over your head, you could get to 100K with as little at 4 miles of drift. I launch weather balloons for a living (NWS) and I have had many flights where the winds reverse above the tropopause (about 40K) and the balloon drifts back over the station. I once tracked a balloon to landing less than 4 miles away with a flight to 102K. Good luck! Don

RE: JACK STAFFORD Models Aircoupe's
Ed, if I remember right, the hatch was 1/8 ply with a 1/4 balsa overlay so I could sand it to shape. Then epoxy coat the inside to fuel proof. Some bass wood anchor epoxied inside as the screw anchors. It comes in handy to get inside there and you can't do it very easily if you build the plane as it is supposed to be constructed. Reading the "Peashooter is a pig" account and then watching the video of another plane and pilot I have to think the first account either had the CG wrong or maybe the leading edge was shaped wrong or... well, who knows because the video Peashooter looks like a pussycat! Congrats, Smithcreek! Don

RE: Royal Kits
ORIGINAL: fabfal Hy guys I'm going to begin a royal Texan AT6 from rc-royal plans. Does somebody know if an OS FS 91 II is enough? On the us wing site they suggest a 120 one but considering the weight ( 4 kg about) it seems to be in excess . I have flown Cessna 182 ,210 cm wing span , 5 kg weight, with 91 FS and could loop with no problem. Thanks Fabrizio
Fabrizio, you have to remember these Royal kits were designed when a .60 was the "big" engine of the day. The OS .91 four stroker should be plenty. Good luck! Post pictures! If you can get to them, go inside the fuselage and turn them out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Always a 1/4" or more sticking up past the nut on the inside. Don

RE: EDF for Klingberg Wing 78
ORIGINAL: Speedy-Gonzales It is the MK II kit with the wing tiplets or tip rudders. I have not received the kit yet but the box says there is directions for adding a ''power pod'' so maybe I can look at the thrustlines for that setup and het some idea of where I'm heading. I do not understand what you meanby having the 'thrust line intersect the CG. I'm talking positive ''up thrust'' for the centerline of the EDF unit in relation to the CL or incidence of the wing. I have previous experience ( 45 years ) in building, designing, and flying just about everything. I have been looking at many EDF units but for simplicity I have my eye on the E-Flite Delta V15 70mm unit and 60 amp ESC but looks a bit heavy. Maybe a CC 60A ESC would save me some weight and a far superior ESC. I'm on my way over to the EJF website right now for a look at what they have. Revver Bro #182 Speedy gonzales
Intersect the CG: I mean if you mount the motor in the back, you will be adding upthrust so if you drew an imaginary line through the axis of thrust and extended it out the front, then you add enough tilt (upthrust) so that line goes through the CG point. It'll be like 5 or 10 degrees. Obviously, if you mount the fan on top of the CG, that makes my point moot. The kit power pod slides on the back of the trailing edge and if I remember correctly, the instructions mention CG/thrust line setup. Enjoy the Klingberg...you will definitely be flying something nobody else will have. I have the glider version built and has been flown, I have the mk II still in the box and I have the .20 size power version also new in box. Don

RE: EDF for Klingberg Wing 78
Calculate the thrustline to intersect at the CG. Have fun building the Klingberg. Setting the correct twist in the wing is thought provoking. I used 1/4" balsa instead of the recommend cardboard pattern. If you don't have the "mk II" kit, I would recommend putting the top drag rudders on your kit. Otherwise, it flies pretty squirrelly if you get too slow. Don

RE: Royal Kits
ORIGINAL: chrisdev01 Hello All: Not to hijack the thread, but I'm about to start on a Royal Piper Tri-Pacer Sr and I am seeking advise on the engine selection. The original box calls for ''.60 to .80 power'' and considering the age of this model I am thinking the mfg was suggesting a .60 to .80 two stroke. I am a Saito Four stroke guy. I own a bunch of them. Considering that this is a 74 inch wingspan, I'm thinking .91 four-stroke, but I'm not sure. Suggestions?
Considering the old .60 to .80 back in the day had less power than today's .60 to .90, a .91 4 stroke should be an excellent choice. My Goldberg Cub (about same size) has an OS .91 4 stroke and it lifts off in 2 plane lengths if somebody holds on until full power is reached. It gets off the water on floats almost as easily. Post pics of your Tri Pacer in the build and good luck! Don

RE: Bridi Aerocomander Shrike
Hmmm... .50 size rotators sound a little light to me. You'll probably run into reliability problems with them. The only electric rotators made for larger planes, that I know of, are Lado retracts. http://www.lado-tech.net/en/15-f4u-corsair Only problem with them is they always seem to be out of stock. I'd stick with air for a plane this size (unless you can get Lado to make you a quick set). Just my opinion... Don

RE: Bridi Aerocomander Shrike
ORIGINAL: japan3d I tried the Rhom Airs by hand and they are very stiff. The air lines just crumble in my hands. The kit has has shock absorbers for the struts too. I'm planning on going electric or my dream was to power it with 2 YS .45's, it would definitely be a screamer with them turning 10.5 x 7.5 props. Waiting on a qoute for the foam cores. Will have to go with balsa sheeting on the wings and tail. What are your plans for the rudder and elevator servos?
If the Rhom's are shot, they are shot. If they jujust need lube and new air lines, that would be a cheap fix. Lado electric rotators would be awesome but I understand it's quite a wait to get a set. Hobby People started selling some electrics a while back but not sure rotators are available. The Ys 45's would be awesome! Electric would be good as well although I think you lose the "twin experience" that way. Tail control will be as on the plans. Servos mounted near the fuelage/wing opening with Dave Brown fiberglass pushrods. If the tail was easy to access, I'd stick the servos in the back but I don't want to butcher the tail to make an access hole. Don

RE: Bridi Aerocomander Shrike
I have not started on mine as I moved back to Alaska and ALL my stuff is in California. I will cover the cores in ply just because I have a lot of 12" wide ply in my wood stash. If I had lot of wide balsa, I would use balsa My plan for wing servos is to mount the flap servo hidden in the engine nacelle (torque rod) and a thin aileron servo midway out on the aileron. No torque rods or bellcranks for the aileron. I was also going to stick the throttle mini servo in the nacelle. I bought a set of beefy rotating gear from Lee Robinson in Florida. they are air activated. Your Rhom Airs should be fine. Looking forward to your build pictures! Don
