RE: Converting from glow to electric help!
Normally, I would recommend a guy wanting to convert from glow to electrics, get some local help and to buy a used electric plane from someone who is looking to sell so they can buy something faster. You can usually find something good deals at the field for sale, ask around. A Park Zone T-28 is a good one and there are other sold by Nitroplanes and Eflight that comes to mind. Usually for a few extra bucks you can pick up a couple batteries and a maybe a decent charger. To help out some guys starting out, I've sold electric demo, receiver ready, demo planes for about $100, including a couple of batteries a cheap charger. From the start I do not recommend you convert a plane from glow to electric as glow planes are heavier and unless you have someone help you, you really don't have the knowledge to buy the right stuff. Get a plane designed from the get-go as a electric plane. Starting out they are not the most exciting, but there is a learning curve here. I've converted planes from glow to electrics all the way up to 1/4 scale and I can tell you it is not cheap to get the same electric performance as you would get from glow. I have a foam 1400mm size P-40 from Nitroplanes using a 46 size motor and a 60 amp ESC, using a UBEC for the radio, and a 3300mah 4s 30c battery that will easily keep a glow plane of same size. If you don't know what I'm talking about, them these are the things you will need to learn and it can be really expensive if you buy the wrong thing and fry it. I fly a lot of electrics about 95% of the time now, I don't fly glow much anymore except my 4 stroke war birds. I still fly my large gas planes.

If you are using the orange receivers the range could be a problem. I've used over 20 orange receivers without a problem, but you have to know their limitations. In larger (about 40 size) you have to run a satellite receiver, beyond a 40 size plane I would use at least a AR6200.

There are really no need plans as what you have is already built. CG is slightly nose heavy at the center spar for the first few flights. I have a feeling the cowl is not the original one. With servos being as cheap as they are, I would dump them all and buy new ones. I have two CG Cubs one uses a old Saito .65 the other a OS .70 Surpass, they both fly great. The plane sis not come with covering

The Dyman DC-3 is a good flier. I painted mine to look like a WWII D-Day C=47. It was kind of a prototype before Nitroplanes introduced the C-47 version. I've had it well over a year now and made a parallel Y connector that allowed me to use two 1800 mah or up to one 4000 mah battery, also I have a steerable tail wheel. I get about 15 minutes flight time. If you have a chance get a 3mm collett and keep it handy, the motor shaft tends to break easily and you can use it as a field repair.

I tend to use the 2X white Gorilla glue, by putting cross cuts on the surface to be clued and clamp or weigh it down. The problem is you cannot do field repairs. You're right about CA being too brittle, I learned that we I was flying a flat foamie.

I think 172AMD says it right. With such a high KV rating the motor is going to try and turn faster and when it can't, the excess draw from your battery will be wasted to produce heat. Not good for the motor or ESC.

I have about 15 of the orange receivers and sold over 30 to other guys at the field. Only one flier had a problem, he had used the receiver in a .40 size trainer and flew it out of range. For $8 you can't beat the price for park flier use with the DX7. I like the orange receivers because I can add the extra satellite receiver for my larger electrics. I will be buying another DX7 and have ordered another 15 receivers and put more of my electric planes on it.

The BH F-5 is good flying plane, but the retracts are made from a low quality plastic. You might want to check utube for videos of guys flying that plane. I don't know if Pete has done a video for it. Currently, you fly planes and Helis, what kind of radio do you have and if you fly electrics what kind of batteries do you have? Look at the specs for the BH 70mm F-5, it takes a 2200 mah 4 cell battery. Some of the performance specs are pure hog wash. Nitroplanes has a smaller 64 mm F-5 that is receiver ready for $109 and I use 2200 mah 3 cell batteries in it. Its smaller and I think that Tony has done a video on it. I aquired the original plane Tony flew in the video for continual testing and it is still flying, though a bit beat. Both planes can fly for 4 to 4.5 minutes on one battery charge. So both airplanes are good fliers, it comes down to what you currently have and how much you can afford to spend on batteries.

Having done ove 30 flights with my AT Jet Tiger, ther are few things you need to know: 1) the ESC needs to be mounted to get lots of cooling or it will over heat, 2) the plane lands fast and nose cone tends to get torn off in the grass. 3) If the nose cone does get damaged the canopy might come off in flight. 4) after a while the decals tend to peel off. It is a good fast flier, good luck.

I have a BlitzRC P-38 from BH. As Nitroplanes did not have a similar one I got my from BH. As far as the plane went it looks good and flies nice. The retracts are something else as the nose gear (nose and main gear are made from cheap plastic) broke on the initial take off and the gear doors didn't close. Their customer service could do anything for me, so I just made a new nose gear. A few flights later one of the main gear retract gear broke. As long as you don't receive a return from someone else and don't need to customer service you probably be OK. What kind of EDF are you looking for as I've flow and owned many of them, I might be able to help you.

As far as ARFs, the products sold by Nitroplanes and others have come a long way in terms of details and flyability as compared to the planes sold many years ago by Sureflite and Lanier. As with any ARFs, every plane wheather sold by Nitroplanes or anyone else should have a prefight review. Unfortunatly, many beginners don't know what to look for, which is why you need to take the plane to a local airfield and looked over and test flown by someone with exerience. Assembly manuals have gotten better, but many still leave out necessay info like the CG and control throws. Many of us who have been in the hobby for 30 years or more remember the time, effort, and cost to build, cover, and out fit our planes. Now days we have the Bind and fly, EDFs that can be completed in a day or two, and trainers that take 20 minutes to assemble. Computer simulaters has been very helpful, but there is no reset button when flying the real thing. There are lots of good stuff out there and lots of trash the problem has always been trying to sort through it. I must have over 40 ARFs in my collection and I'm happy I've got them.

Thanks [/quote] I don't think the Ultra Stick is a good beginners plane. I suggest you look into the Hawk Sky by Nitoplanes or Easy Star by Mutiplex. I've flown both and as a trainer they are durable and fly well. Banana Hobbies also makes one of similar design, but they have had problems providing good customer service. The pusher design can handle hard landing better than the the tractor designs. I also suggest you buy an extra battery, that way you can use one for flying, while charging the other. Also take a 2" wide roll of packing tape to do field repairs. At our local airfield many guys have started learning to fly using these planes.

Not knowing the weight of the plane, The products sold from HobbyPartz, an Alpha 480, with a 30 amp ESC and a 9x5 prop should fit the bill. Add a 2200 mah 3 cell, 20 to 25 C rated battery should give you about 5 to 6 minutes of flying time. This should give you decent performance while keeping the costs down.

Nitroplanes.com is another company you might consider. The planes that Nitroplanes and Banana Hobbies sells are about the same except Nitroplanes have a better reputation and are cheaper. I own and fly about 12 of the EDF sold by Nitroplanes, some are good and some are not so good. As always it is usually the power systems that comes with it. I like the Meteor sold by Nitroplanes performance wise it is about the same as the Habu sold by Park Zone (I've flown the Habu so I know) with out the high sticker price.

The AR6200 with is a full range receiver. I have three of the receivers and had no problems in my .60 size warbirds to a 1/4 scale Cub. If the satellite receiver is removed it might be confused as a park flier.

Banana Hobbies has had problems in the past and they really haven't done much to fix their business model. Hobby King, Nitroplanes, Toy Sonic, and Banana Hobbies sells many of the same planes just under different names. I've interacted with all of them and Banana Hobby is at the bottom when it comes to customer service. They do have a problem in this area.

The P-38 from Banana is a good flying plane if you get a good one. If you don't you might been difficult getting the problem resolved. I've head of more than a few complaints of poor customer service from the local fliers. Because of these problems, I myself have steered clear of Banana Hobbies, I buy my stuff from Nitroplanes, Hobby King, and Toy Sonic.

I like the Hawk Sky and the pusher configuration. In minor crashes the motor and prop is not in the front of the plane to get damaged. The hawk Sky is a four channel with ailerons and rudder. It a decent soaring airplane too.

IMHO with the drop in the cost of Lipo's, it's the only way to go. If NiMH or NiCd are so good, why are brushed only included with the cheaper trainers. Just about everything now is brushless. I've been buying 2200 MAH 3cell 25c rated batteries for less than 20 bucks. My lipos give me about 100 flights before they start to go bad. There is no way for my FW190, EDFs, or my hotliner to perform the same way on NiMH or NiCd as it does on Lipos. NiMH or NiCd are fine for TX and RX usage.

Glad you didn't get hurt. The Art Tech Corsair is a good flying plane. I received a lightly crashed one from Nitroplanes for experimentation purposes. Installed one of their Monster 10 motor. It was a great flying plane. I don't know how damaged your elevator is, but unless it is totally crunched, it is usually repairable. Be sure to glue it on straight and rebalance the plane.

[/quote] Where did you shatter the wing? Actually, to repair a broken wing it is quite simple. If the there is a undamaged rib or even a rib in the unbroken part of the wing that is you can get to you can use a sheet of paper, trim it to match the rib, then you will have a template. Or if the ribs are broken you can use 1/16 balsa and laminate them crosswise, use thin CA to glue it. Glue with epoxy or carpenters glue hard wood doublers in the each side of both spars, On the leading edge get a piece of balsa and sand/trim into shape and use light ply or hard balsa as a doubler on the inside. On the trailing edge use thin CA and 3/4 oz. fiberglass and over lay the damaged area. Recover the area as needed. Rebalance as someone had stated before. Depending upon the extent of the damage it should take about 3 hours to fix.

[/quote] Always buy batteries with tabs as it is very easy to damage them when soldering. I personally have not had the need to covert to using LiPo's in the Tx or RX. I build my own packs with 2200 to 3200 mah batteries. Have not had problem with flight time with any of my TX and RX gear. One thing with using Lipo's you have to remember to turn off your equipment as if you let the voltage get too low on Lipo's you will damage them.

One of the airfields I fly out of runs north to south, so the afternoon sun is right in your face. In the late afternoon there are so few fliers there that they go to the west side of the runway so the sun will be to their backs. Not following club rules, but I don't say anything as there are usually only two to three people at the field and they fly one at a time and almost always flying small electrics.
