RE: Aquacraft Hammer with Brushless 8L motor
No matter what you do you should reinforce the bottom of the boats hull with resin and fiberglass cloth. If you're keeping the submerged drive you might even consider glassing up around the motor mount to stiffen it up. With the added torque of a bl or larger can motor you'll need to beef it up a bit for the flimsy abs plastic to handle it.

Here are a couple of pics of the Hammer EP converted to surface drive. I'm now using 16 cells instead of 14 and the boat is a good bit quicker...enough to where it's kind of boring going back to 14! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5994389

RE: power lost
That esc costs $160. Don't waste your money. Go for this one: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=rch-vic1032 and get it while you can because they won't be made anymore. They're IMO the best brushed marine esc's ever made, and backed with outststanding customer service. Don't get that charger! Please spend a few more dollars and get a GOOD charger, if not you'll get a good one later on and wished you hadn't wasted your money earlier on. I personally use a Triton http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=dh-gpmm3153 and love it. Just use a Y harness to charge multiple packs. It does require a 12v dc source but that can be purchased, or made very inexpensively. Most very good chargers are 12v dc. Don't know about that motor but MHZ carries decent products but they tend to be on the slightly expensive side.

RE: SV27 - Batteries after dunk
You did the right thing by cutting off the shrink, it makes drying them out a lot easier. Just dry them out and they should be just fine. You didn't mention if you run in fresh or salt water. Salt water can and will rust out anything it can! If you run in salt water I would spray the packs down with some electrical cleaner (or r/c motor spray) and that should help with corrosion. If you run in fresh water just dry them off. Mine don't have any rust and have never had any problems out of them. And they've been wet a lot[:D]

RE: gel-cell battery
That's a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry slow charge, so going over a couple hours isn't going to hurt anything. If the battery was dead it would take 11 hours and 40 minutes to charge it full. The battery is a 7A which equals 7000 milliamps. The charger charges at 600mA (milliamps). So, 7000 / 600 = 11.6666 which is 11h 40min. Assuming you're not at 100% dead charge, I'd say 9-11 hours would be just fine.

Even if you do have the money, you can still make your own and save probably $60. Plus, it's fun and rewarding. OSE has the most reasonably priced micro hardware I've seen yet. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=mcr-mhd&cat=69 If you made your own you'd still probably save around $40.

RE: Through the hull or transom
With your hull it should work all the time. Even with a surface drive, if properly placed will work very well. Use large diameter fuel tubing and a brass tubing that's as large as you can use and still get the tubing over. I think you'll be pleased with the results.

RE: Dumas Chris-Craft 1940 Barrel Back
ORIGINAL: Kmot My experience with Trinity Monster Maxx motors (3 sets, in an E-Maxx) is that they are overpriced junk. They make good power for a very short time and then they are crap. They fry the comm's easily. I can just imagine in a closed hull with no cooling air and no cooling water that you cooked it in no time. Get a Traxxas Titan motor if you want the same size motor to bolt in. It makes 98% of the power of the Monster Maxx (verified in side by side testing) and will last 1000 times longer. Costs 1/5 as much.
Ditto that. I wasted over $110 on 2 of those POS's and springs and brushes. Titan's are cheap and reliable. For the money, IMO they're dang tough to beat. If you do swap out motors and have the room, the 700SC is a tough, torquey reliable motor. And you don't need any kind of monster of an esc to run it. On 12 cells it's wears little with a 42-45mm prop.

Jan, it being a V hull would you offset the driveshaft, or angle it to the side a bit? I thought that the driveshaft should exit the hull about 1/8'' up from the keel. Is there a better way to do it?

RE: Dumas Chris-Craft 1940 Barrel Back
Wow that's a beautifull boat! I don't think I can dig up that much patience (or time) to build something like that. Water wouldn't have ruined the motor. The motors can actually run under water, but the brushes will wear out quickly....if you're using a soft compound brush they'll wear out very quickly. My thought is that when the boat started sinking you probably didn't run the motor much anyway so that wouldn't be to much of an issue, but I'd replace the brushes anyway, which I think with the motor you have you can. I don't know what kind of magnets that motor has, but some magnets will rust, some will not. Neo's will rust. After it gets wet just spray it out with motor cleaner or wd-40 and let it dry out. I'll take the air compressor and blow it out to speed things up and really dry it out. If you see any rust on the springs replace them. Sometimes you can get a brush hung up on the com and it won't want to spin right. No biggie just reseat the brushes and see how it spins then. Also you could have possibly used too long of a motor mount screw, check on that. Hope this helps a bit, Bryan Why would your motor be running in reverse if it's direct drive? You're only running one motor aren't you? Direct drive shouldn't affect that at all. If you motor is running in reverse you probably have your motor leads crossed up.

What actually constitutes a "FE"? Are you looking for a certain number? Most of my boats are electric....I think they're fast. People stop and say "Is that electric? Wow, that's fast." That's proof enough for me.

RE: Burnt Mamba 25 in Gecko
80 would be overkill, but I like overkill! Watch out for size and weight, weight affects micros quite a bit. I know people that run hacker 40A's and they've never had a problem. I use a Hacker master 70 and it gets a little warm, that's it. I got the bigger esc so I wouldn't have to worry about it not being enough, and so I wouldn't have to get another one later on for a bigger project.
