RE: Why the Trees?
The logs were also used to help the tanks bridge anti tank trenches by filling the bottom of the trench with logs so the tanks could drive across. I saw this on Greatest tank battles. Love that show. Tankers had a hard row to hoe for sure. I have much respect for those brave men.

RE: Mounting screws for T-34
Superglue won't hold them. I used four magnets to hold the hulls together and metal washers. The magnets would pull the washers right off the hull. Final fix was BVM Aeropoxy. Aeropoxy is pricey but what I like about it is that it will not run.

RE: Trumpeter T-34s
Ausf I'm in the middle of a conversion right now using the WSN T34 and the static 1944 T34-85 kit. My WSN actually had Trumpeter moulded into the hull on the inside. So far I've updated the WSN hull with Daryl's road arms and upgraded the static kits road wheels and front idler to accomodate 5-8-2.5 flanged bearings. I also used Daryl's upgrade package for the outdrives, idler tension system and updated the original WSN nylon gears to the metal gear set available on Ebay. When you get ready to fit the upper hull on the WSN lower you will notice that you have to remove about am 1/8" of plastic of the front end where the two hulls join together to get a good fit. With a good fit front and rear on mine I still have abot .040 gap between the lower and upper hulls along the sided. My upper hull is attached with four magnets right now but I may add two more at the front.. So while the upper and lower hulls are close they are not a perfect fit. I installed Tamiya KV electronics in mine and it sounds and runs very nice. I tried to us a Tamiya speaker box from the KV1 but it's not a good fit. However the aluminum plate that the speaker is attched to fits perfectly accross the tops of the last two spring towers on both sides. At the moment I've used the WSN turret rotation mechanism and gear but this is complex to adapt to the static upper hull. After I got that to work OK I discovered last night the the main gun elevation is limited by the design I worked out to mount the WSN turret ring gear. Back to the drawing boards tonight. Its a lot of work using the static kit upper hull and turret but the level of detail is much better than the WSN. So if your up to a technical challenge combining the static and WSN tanks will make for a very nice tank. Talk to Daryl he is a very nice guy and his stuff is very nice. He can actually do a conversion for you at vitually any level you want to take it. including an endoskeleton for the static kit. Sure wish Tamiya would just fix this problem once and for all. John

RE: WSN T34/85 Full Conversion Help
I would be afraid of breaking it. I think I would drill the idler for a bushing that passes all the way through the idler and secure it with a screw and washer. I need to work on mine tonight so I'll let you know what I discover.

RE: WSN T34/85 Full Conversion Help
I took one of my idlers apart tonight and here's what I discovered. The idlers do not have any bushing in them. The shaft the idler runs on has a screw threaded into it to hold the idler in place. If you pop the cover of with a small flat blade screw driver you can remove the screw. The idler halves are glued together. Since I'm in the process of installing bearings in the road wheels now, I'll do the idlers as well. I've attached a few pictures

That I don't know. I installed the idler system from Daryl and I'm using the idler from the trumpeter kit. I'll look at the ones that came off my T34 tonight.

RE: WSN T34/85 Full Conversion Help
Better late than never. Daryl Turner gets the credit. He sent me pictures of how to do this when I bought the outdrive upgrade parts from him. Those inside bushing are junk and wont last very long. Mine had minimum use in the house and a little out in the backyard and the outdrive gears were chewing away at the plastic screw retainer post.

RE: WSN T34/85 Full Conversion Help
You can grab the brass part with a pair of side cutters and pull it right off the shaft. Daryl Turner has an outdrive bearing package that tightens up the outdrives very nicely. I'm in process of building a full option T34-85 as well and have installed Daryl's road arms and idler system. I'm also using the upper hull and turret from the Trumpeter 1944 T34-85 kit as well. Its a fun build.

RE: 45
If you like working with poly primer, you should check out and try some of the 2K Urethane based primer. Has far superior filling capabilities over poly based primers (which is also good). I've been busy lately designing and producing photobooths and some of them are painted with automotive basecoat/clearcoat. The Urethane primer fills in the little grains very easily in usually two coats....sprayed about 5 minutes from each other. It sands very easily without gumming up the paper like Epoxy and Poly based primers tend to do. Poly in this sense is a prefix to Urethane. Polymers are added to urethane (basically a rubber) to form longer chain molecules or polyurethane. Good luck with your poject, I molded a cat hull a few years ago. Take your time and you will have a great mold!
ORIGINAL: kamipalms Yes, mdf again with plenty of filler :) I'm using a polyurethane primer for these now - no problems what so ever.
RE: FIBERGLASSING HULL???
Here is a thread I made a while back, may give you some insight. With all the work involved you may be best keeping an eye out for a used a fiberglass hull like the V24 One Design pictured there. I've seen them on Ebay for less than $100 for a hull alone. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8761328/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

RE: need help for my rio 51
A little through the tube at rest is typical. Sometimes you will get water, others not. Disconnect the water tube hose at the pickup. Blow into it as you place your finger on the water outlet hole at the side of the hull. If it's tight, the cooling system should be at least mostly sealed. Is the water coming in as you "tub" test or actual running in a pond?

RE: need help for my rio 51
Well, for starters the Rio is a very nice overall boat. Be patient as this hobby does have a learning process. Pictures of your hull insides will significantly help diagnose your problem with water. Could be as simple as a cut water supply line. Do you have the plug in the transom missing???...I know it's an obvious question but.... Oh and welcome to RCU!

RE: new lay up
These hulls look nice. You speak of just wetting out the carbon fiber and not being able to see air bubbles. When I add carbon to my hulls I skip on polyester resin and use epoxy and vacume bag, this practically guarantees an air bubble free, rock solid lightweight hull since all the excess epoxy is removed. Of course this method would cut in to your profit margin. Keep up the good work!

Unless it's a 40% plane, I don't see where you can pack anything besides the regular gear in there. Unless it's like a giant Telemaster (got one...haha). That's one HUGE friggin plane!

RE: Rio 51
Nice boat, not sonice engine. Spend some time reading through some if the MANY threads here about this one. In a nutshell, MOST Fugi engines have failed at the exhaust port and owners have been replacing them with better options. The manufacturer corrected this by now including a quality Zenoah with the current model.

That was almost a few years ago. I purchased another hull from an Aussie for producing here in the US. Part of our agreement was for me to pay shipping to the States. I'm not sure who he went through but it only took like 3-4 days! If I remember, I'll let ya know.

RE: Custom rc boat STUCK!
Wow do you have a ton of questions. I feel your excitement and desire to learn from here! There are many great members here who will undoubtably lend asistance. Really sounds like you just simply need to go through these threads at RCU. The search feature is great if you give enough detail. I would love to be able to answer all your questions, however the answers are not always short and they are easily found by using that search feature. Good luck with your project, I remember how excited (and confused) I was building my first boat......the rewards are great and you learn so much as you go along. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

RE: Spraying gelcoat
ORIGINAL: mickieb49 Thanks heaps guy's, it is what i thought about the Auto spray guns ( a hell of alot of cleaning required) , so i am thinking on a dump gun then. What PSI range are you looking at for the Dump guns? I have been using brushes for years, just thought i'd try to join the professionals by finally trying a gun, maybe even get a even coat of gel??? And i am starting to bui;d a few boats every week now. How many layers of gelcoat do you guy's do? 2, 3 ? Sorry for the million and 1 questions , just seems around where i live no one likes to shed any knowledge on fiberglassing, guess they think i was going to steal their thunder ?????? even though i'm building model boats , and not big boats. thanks for all the help. Mick
Dump gun pressure, I found that around 40 PSI works well. too much and you will wrinkle or put waves in the finish. With the dump gun, just one application of gel is all you need...it goes on very thick and rarely runs on you.

RE: Affixing hull halves & retailing watertight integrity
Try looking for plastic epoxy.....I'm assuming your model is made from plastic. Getting the right glue is the key....regular epoxy will usually flake off after a very short while. Epoxy designed for plastics actually chemically melts into the surface a little before it hardens creating an unbeatable chemical bond that won't let go. Check out this here.... www.plasticepoxy.org/ This is just one brand that I personally use. Found it better than most out there.

RE: Spraying gelcoat
Thinning down the gelcoat is not ideal, however I did it for a while before getting my dump gun without any issues. When I teach my fiberglass construction unit at the school I work at, I have students try many different methods for application, including thinning the gel. You don't NEED to spray, however it is the best way to build a good thick even coat...especially if you have a dump or "cup" gun. To answer your question about what size tip to get....well the bigger the better. You want to thin it JUST ENOUGH to come out of the gun smoothly. Don't worry if it's sloppy coming out, as long as you get even coverage to avoid "tripe", or wrinkling of the gelcoat. I know Mart just brushes his gel layer in...nothing wrong with that method and works well, just may take a couple/few coats. I just pesonally use a dump gun because it IS the best way to apply....it's very fast, efficient and if you have good gun control applies a nice thick even layer and does not miss any areas....especially corners. If your just doing one build, just save your money and get a few disposable paint brushes. If it's your plan to build several, and you have the spraybooth or an area outside to spray in then get that dump gun, you won't be dissapointed!

RE: what mold release wax do you use
Don't use PVA....that stuff just screws up the finish. With at least 10-15 coats of wax, you will not need it. I used to use Partall, until I realized I was wasting my time with it.
