RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Alfa: My 1/8" axles on the original ESM air retracts are bending more and more each time I land. I would like to "grease" my landings every time, but!! I wish I could replace those axles, still looking. Wish they were a larger diameter.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Hi all; just wanted to check in and let you know that I maiden my Corsair and it flew great without any issues. I will try to get some video sometime. The 50cc replacement cowls that Troy Built sells come blank without the decal even though you see the decal in the picture, but I see that there're now on back order. You would also have to purchase the plywood mounting ring too.

I talked with Ron and he suggested to use Futaba servos.

Brad – Thanks for the comments, you will be happy with the D & L conversion, I just had my P-51 retracts converted by them. I also made sure I will have enough up elevator throw on the F4U, just in case. Nick - http://www.swbmfg.com/products/Wire-Tensioner.html haven’t heard about the wheels remaining up during flight, will keep that in mind.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Thanks "Mr_Grump", wherewaldo", and "stoat". I love flying those Cubs, especially on windy days! Thanks "vasek", I purchased the ESM air retracts when the corsair was on backorder. They aren't leaking and appear to be working fine. They are built steardy and I really like the scale like aluminum wheels. I see that ARF PROS LLC still sell the original retracts like mine for the 85" Corsair. I never ordered from them though.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Finally finished and now waiting for some descent weather to maiden. The build was longer than anticipated due to the numerous retrofittings I encountered. I installed a Saito FG-57T gas engine with a digital ignition tachometer and an ignition cutoff. My flight batteries are two 2600 mAh lithium ions’s switched and regulated to 6.0 volts. I had to add 31.2 ounces of lead plus the flight and ignition batteries to the cowl for the C.G. I used the original ESM air retracts offered for their 85 Corsair and replaced their air tubing with Robart’s along with some other air component products. The pictures may help explain some of the adjustments made for rudder and elevator controls due to the cockpit install. I have been using a carbon fiber 22 x 10 prop for engine break-in. I hope these pictures may be of help to someone. Bob

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
I suppose you could use the back side as the front side. You may need to apply some diluted exoxy to smooth up the rough side and then sand. Then you could spray it with Testors All Purpose Spray Enamel, 1233 Flat Light Aircraft Gray. The color is very close and the part is flexible enough to work. Just my thoughts.

ARF Pros, LLC sells the original 4 1/2" wheels. They say not recommended for ESM electric retract, but you no longer have ESM electric retracts. May be a weight problem. RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Looking very good! I think you made a good decision. Too bad ESM substituted plastic wheels. Speaking about knock-off retracts. I see Aeroworks now offer their P-51 without retracts. The Robart Top Flite P-51 #622.5 is the exact replacement and has no issues at all. Robart is going to offer an electric version of all their retracts with D. & L. doing the conversions.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Mr_Grump; that Saito is a sweet running gas engine. I ran it twice so far on a bench setup following their break-in procedure and had no issues at all. Using an electric starter, you don't need to choke it at all. BTY, Tower sells an On-Board Digital Tachometer that plugs into the ignition system. Saito doesn't have one yet.

If you epoxy in the air tail retract, you will no longer have access to the air lines and/or air cylinder. Anyone addressed this yet?

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
ORIGINAL: Mr_Grump I'm about to glue the aileron hinges. The instructions call for 30mm deflection both sides of center. Have any of you got 30mm? If I use 1mm to space the aileron from the trailing edge, I only get about 15mm deflection both ways before hitting the sheeting sealing the gap. I just want to be sure I've got enough aileron control before I make it permanent. Have any of you had to trim the sheeting to get enough deflection? On my Corsair, they did a poor job drilling the hinge holes. I am replacing the hinges with Robarts. Any suggestions on proper hinging would be appreciated.
I noticed with mine that one wing trailing edge was longer or wider then the others. I had to use a Thin Cut Dremel blade to trim this one down to match the other one. Then sand or file to smooth up. The edges are fiber board. The trailing edge needs to be about 4.5mm wide to acheive a 30mm deflection while using the one mm spacing. I usually set my ailerons with more up then down deflection. What throws are you guys using?
ORIGINAL: futura127 Any one have to repaint any of the blue on the body? Can you tell me what matches? Thanks, Joe
Joe, I have rattle can of Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Satin Periwinkle on hand that is a very close match. I plan to spray a little on foil and add a drop of white to match the original. This paint is just a tad darker then the original, but good enough for me for touch up. If anyone else has a better choice, please share.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Here is a work in progress for my ESM Air Retracts which is the same as the electric ones only with an air cylinder. With the retracts in place, there is a 1-1/4" space between the retract and the wooden former. I ended up flipping the cylinder over so the air line came out the correct side to eliminating any air line kinking as Magnum RC referred to. I also placed a 3/16" Clevis Pin through the wooden former, probably didn't need it. D and L's actuator requires less space than the air cylinder, therefore their housing will remain inside the confinements of the original air cylinder space according to D and L.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
ORIGINAL: Orion09 Hi.The ESM electric retracts bind against the wing spar just before full up.Emailed Troy Built and they said they hadn't heard the problem but suggested making room for the actuator into the spar.Mine uses a plywood joiner so I think I will remove some of the spar and move the retract ahead a little.Only need about 3/8 inch.As for the gear speed,''they'' are working on a Gen 2 board at a cost of half the difference.
Interesting! I have ESM Air Retracts. I had to shim the rear of my retracts with a washer and remove some plywood on the bottom of the wheel wells so the wheels could completely retract up. Otherwise, I could be loosing air while flying around. I saw on TBM where they already have an update not to be ready till March?? or so to the version 1 electric retracts. Hopfully, Down and Locked retro will be shorter in length and depth. Thanks for your information.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
ORIGINAL: Mr_Grump I got the ESM electrics for mine. It took 45 seconds for them to cycle either direction. I've sent them to Down and Locked for evaluation. Great support. Mitch has kept me informed all along. He estimates about about a 9 second cycle once he's finished. They've not had the opportunity to modify these. I'll post his cost estimate once he's done with his appraisal. It'll most likely be after the holiday smoke clears which is perfectly understandable. While I may end up with a substantial investment in the electrics, I just prefer the simplicity. Another subject.... I've looked at the Corsair manual panels 11 through 16 over and over and I just can't figure out what they're trying to tell me. I want to keep the center section in place for transport. I can't figure out the wooden plate/fiberboard business. Someone care to enlighten me? Thanks....
The 2mm ply wooden plate is just a template to locate the hole to be placed into the 2mm fiberboard. Fasten the wooden plate in the wing and cut it off flush, then lay it on the fiberboard plate and drill a hole. The fiberboard will also have to been trimmed in length to fit in the wing. Make it the same size as the wooden plate. Hope this helps.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
The mounting cylinder in my kit turned out with a down and to the left thrust built into it. Since I'm using the Saito FG-57T with the wide mounting bracket, I needed to make some adjustments to the cylinder to arrive at a right thrust angle. I used a 1/8" ply sheet and a 3/8" ply sheet both being tapered to end up with the correct angle. I also used 8 blind nuts. I hope this may be of some help to someone. I wish the cylinder was 1/2" wider in diameter for this engine.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
ORIGINAL: alfa1023 Just picked up the ESM 50cc Corsair from ARFPro's this afternoon - they just got in a new shipment. A quick review of parts (nothing missing, no damage) shows that they have changed the wing joining method from an aluminum tube to a wood wing joiner. The instruction manual still shows the aluminum tube. And the rib template included in the kit is cutout for the wingtube, not the ''new version'' wood joiner. Has anybody else received a plane with this different wing joiner? It appears to be about the same length (14 1/4'' long) as the aluminum tube (instructions show it at 400mm). My plan (hope) was to keep this as a 3 piece wing for transport purposes. It looks like the outer wings are held together to the center wing by a single screw into a wooden tab on the front edge of the wing. At first blush, this seems a possible weak link. Has anybody added a second attachment point at the back edge of the wing (and if so, how did you do it)? Not trying to rengineer something if it works fine as is. Just wanting to see what others have done. Thanks for the assistance.
Received mine 11/9 with the wooden joiner in lieu of a tube. Normally one would use CF or Aluminum tubes for removable wings and wood joiners to permanently join together wings. Haven't test fitted yet.
