RE: Testing the new NV (Norvel) .40 size (6.5cc) gasoline glow engine
It looks a lot like my AX-40. Earlwb, please keep us informed how it goes with your GX-40.

RE: Testing the new NV (Norvel) .40 size (6.5cc) gasoline glow engine
I wish I had an immediate need for an engine so that I can buy an NV GX-40 now, but I am behind on my projects and have 3 extra engines waiting to go into planes. But this engine is on my list of must-haves for the future.

I would have expected a much greater performance difference. Seems like that new 65 has got something right.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I followed a discussion (argument) about oil in another thread and it ended up having several animals chomping on popcorn, deer, panda, I think a chimp too. Keeps it entertaining. Just to throw fuel to the fire, (this probably belongs to another thread), but as far as synthetics go, isn't PAG used in the USA? How about the new Ester oils that are now being sold in auto stores? Would they work on a Saito (and other hobby engines)? I think the Esters are sometimes used in Europe.

RE: FP or LA
A question to the OP, does the fact that you are using these engines in a budget multi-engine application dictate that it has to be air-bleed carb and bushing engined? Or is the choice of engines based on availability used from somebody? This thread went off on airbleed vs. twin needles and ball-bearing vs. plain-bearing (still interesting to me btw). But what does each criteria have to do with multi-engine and budget? There are cheaper engines that are ball-bearing/twin-needle than the OS LA. But those engines might be heavier. (power vs. weight vs. budget).

RE: *** CLUB SUPER TIGRE ***
I have a new ST project engine. A guy at the club gave me an old Italian G51 that just came out of a big crash. I took it home and cleaned it in a crock-pot with antifreeze. I corrected the carb jet orientation (cat-eye slot) to point straight down (was way off), installed the carb and muffler, and mounted it on my engine test stand. I put several drops of after-run oil in it since I didn't have a chance to start it right away. I immediately noticed that when I turn the engine over with the throttle closed all the way that after-run oil oozes and bubbles out of the carb base and the front bearing. My questions are: Where would I find the correct o-ring seal for the carb? How bad is it that I leak oil out of the front bearing (I know a bit is ok, but this seems a lot considering I am slowly turning it by hand). The compression is great, but the bearings feel a tiny bit scratchy, but not noticeable unless you are really listening (I got other engines that sound similar and are running fine).

RE: Club FOX!
ORIGINAL: earlwb Cougar429, Years ago some others used Perry pumps or Robart pumps on the Fox .60 and .74 engines. Fox at the time suggested using the larger bore (.350'') size MK-X carb along with a ''A'' low speed needle.  The ''A'' needle had a leaner mid range taper to it, the standard low speed needle might have been called a ''B'' needle, I forget now. There was also a ''C'' low speed needle for a more rich mid-range too.  Duke later quit making the A and C needles and provided instructions on changing the taper for the different purposes.  You can rework the needle by chucking it up in a drill and using a stone laid against it. It is easy to get replacement needles, if you screw it up, which are much cheaper than going with an adapter for a Perry Pump carb or special OS 3 mixture control carb or Super Tigre carb.  I'll look around for the instructions about making the needle change, I am sure its around here someplace. It took me a while to remember, I figured this all out after I quit messing around with the fuel pumps on a Fox engine.
I can't believe you remember all these details. I can't remember where I put my shoes yesterday!!![:)] That's good info though. I imagine the needle won't have to be re-shaped if using a fuel pressure regulator instead of a pump?

RE: Club FOX!
In retrospect, I would have saved money by buying a new Fox instead of a used one. I ended up having to buy a new ring, bearings, and carb for the old one that I bought used. And that meant that I still had to go through the long break-in period. But at least I learned how to do some engine work.

RE: Club FOX!
I also had a good weekend flying my plane with the Fox 74 Eagle IV. I started out by changing the prop from 12x8 to 12x6. It ended up being quite rich with the 12x6 prop, so I re-tuned it to lean it a bit. However, it was still too rich at the top-end to give me enough power, but I couldn't lean it out more becauuse it would lean out when I pointed the plane up. So, out of pure (precision!) guess-work, I switched glow plugs from a Fox #8 to a Fox Miracle plug (running 0% nitro fuel). The plug change transformed the engine to a hot-rodder. Perfect performance for my use. I think that I could run 5% nitro with a Fox #8 plug, or 0% nitro with a Miracle plug. Next thing to do is to try a diffferent muffler that is not so restrictive. I am running a muffler that is not the Fox, but similar performance based on earlier tests. I have a hacked up mousse can muffler that I have not tried yet. I will also look around for a tuned muffler, if I can get a good deal. I will do a muffler evaluation this winter when flying is not possible.

As far as second plane ARF's, the GP Escapades are nice. I have the smaller 40 and it is a blast. The larger 60 would be easier to manage (and see).

RE: Super Tigre .45 or Evolution .46NT
ORIGINAL: jester_s1 All you can really do to decide is fly the plane with both. Even if you have top RPM numbers that doesn't tell you everything, or even nearly everything, about how the engine will fly the plane. Since it's only 4 bolts to switch them out, I'd take a day and run one with a few different props and then run the other one with a few different props. They'll accelerate differently, run differently on the top end, will probably like different props which affects the torque effects that your plane sees, will vertical differently, and will generally have a different feel. It shouldn't take long to decide which one suits your flying style the best.
And doing this test would be a lot of fun too!!! I did that with one of my planes, have run 3 different engines on it with a good amount of learning achieved.

Maybe I'm late to this conversation, but NV engines (formerly Norvel) re-started production, again. They recently came out with a .46, but I don't know how powerful it is. the AX40 is moderately powerful, but not communist. (formerly communist?)

RE: Norvel 25, 40 long term reviews
ORIGINAL: djlyon I have the 40AX. I flew quite a lot on a fun fly. It runs very well with good throttle response. The power is on the low end of the scale for sport 40s. The reason I believe is because it is poorly aspirated. If you don't give them much fuel you don't get much power and then of course they seem to have good fuel efficiency. Maybe 20 to 40 percent right out of the box[;)] Denis
Regarding poor aspiration, I wonder if using the carb from the new NV AX46 would help. I was told that the new AX46 is a bored out AX40 with bigger carb throat. But is info I got from the NV website, no personal experience.

RE: Norvel 25, 40 long term reviews
I have AX40 that I bought from Sig about 4 years ago. I used it on a lightweight funfly plane (Model Tech Magic 36). I chose the AX40 because it is lightweight. However, the plane I put it in would do better with a 4-stroke engine for low-end torque. The Norvel AX40 did well from a throttle response, idle, and top end aspect. But it is not meant for high low-end torque. I briefly installed it on a Great Planes Escapade and flew well, but not as much power as a Super Tigre G-51. I plan on installing it on a Hangar 9 Sundowner 36 this winter. I will put a 9x7 prop and will be running it more as a speed/power engine rather than a torque engine. I don't think the stock muffler will work with the Sundowner cowl because it is a tilt-down muffler. So, I will be looking for a high-flow high performance muffler for it soon (don't know which one). I think the muffler mounting is similar to the OS 40FSR. Does anyone know what other mufflers will work for the AX40 that are not tilt-up or down? Hopefully with performance boost?

RE: *** CLUB SUPER TIGRE ***
Sorry I took so long to back to you on my G51 throttle transition being too rich and sluggish. I tried 5% nitro Cool Power fuel with a Fox #8 glow plug, 11x7 prop. The transition with 5% nitro was much better, it was a great improvement. I noticed that the engine might have a bit less power on the top end compared to 15% nitro, but the plane was already so overpowered (Escapade 40), that a slight drop in power wouldn't matter. Problem solved. Thanks for the help guys!!!

RE: What size of RC planes do you like?
The really small micros are great for flying indoors. But I don't have access to any indoor flying facilities. Most of my planes are in the .40 c.i. size. I have 2 new ones in the .60-.90 size, have flown only one of them so far. Noticeably easier to see and fly in winds than the .40. I also have a couple of park flyers (electric) that I can only fly on calm days. And one giant gasser (38cc)that I fly on extra windy days, awesome flying machine. I use an old minivan with the seats removed. I may build a rack from PVC pipes someday to stuff more planes in it. As time progresses, I plan on reducing the number of planes I own and keep only the bigger ones and a couple of electric park flyers. It is really more fun to have a few planes that are in excellent shape than to have many in less-than good shape. They each have pros and cons.

RE: *** CLUB SUPER TIGRE ***
I need advice tuning my ST G51. The past year or so I noticed that the midrange transition is very rich and I get a stumble, sometimes big surges (engine cuttng) while transitioning from idle to WOT while flying. It acts like it is very rich in the midrange. Sometime ago I loosened the 2 throttle barrel screws and rotated the throttle assembly very slightly clockwise to help lean it a bit. The low speed needle valve is set as lean as I can get it without sacrificing a good idle, the high speed needle is set just a bit rich from peak. So, should I rotate the throttle barrel clockwise some more? I am running 15% nitro with a medium plug, 11x7 prop and a MACs one-piece muffler. Performance is excellent except for the throttle transition. Thanks.

RE: Club FOX!
That has been my experience with my Fox .74. It could run great with 15% nitro on the bench, but would heat up and quit in the air, even without an engine cowl installed. I switched to 0 or 5% nitro, I use Fox #8 plug (cooler), and tuned it like Earl mentioned, at 1/4 tank to make sure no leaning occurs as the tank empties. Mine is older than Landeck's, so I started out with the old head button. After switching to the new head button, it made it easier to not lean out and overheat. This engine has so much compression, you have to make sure it is set rich or else it will heat up fast. Some may consider this engine more work to break in, but I see it as an opportunity to run without nitro and save $$$ while still maintaining power, low idle, and good throttle response.

I got to fly my plane with the Fox 74 Eagle IV today. But I switched the prop from 13x6 to 12x8. I still ran 0% nitro. Ran beautifully. It seems to run smoother, more power, and even more vertical with the 12x8 compared to the 13x6. It did look goofy with the smaller prop while parked, but flew better.

I have never owned an OS 70FL. I remember reading about them that they require a special way to set up the fuel tank and tubing. Are you setup according to the manual as far as the fuel system is concerned? It is not the same as other engines for the 70FL.
