RE: Muffler pressure - yes or no
Thanks John. I was assuming the vintage ST was in good shape for what it is and I was just expecting too much. I am crossing over from heli's and not familiar with power setups for planes. I'll save it for an appropriate model, maybe a 40 size and get a newer engine for the Giles.

RE: Muffler pressure - yes or no
I've been trying to exhaust [:D] all possibilities before shelving my ST 60 and buying something new. I have just installed an old ST V60 in a 50 size Giles. It has a 12x6 prop and plenty of compression and the original small throat carb. I too have found if I pull the pressure line I can set a great idle and it does not seem to starve the engine when I hold the plane verticle. I have a slimline pitts muffler on it. The engine was my father's from back in the early 70s. So I'm not sure if the muffler is a 60 size or 40 size. My problem is I can't pull more than 8200 rpm with the 12x6 and an 11x6 gets me around 9000 with the muffler installed. When I remove the muffler I can get 9300 with the 12x6 installed. It seems as though the muffler is restricting the exhaust too much. I flew it with the muffler installed and the 11x6 and it can barely pull itself at 9000 rpm. When I throttle up with the muffler off and the 12x6 prop I can definitely feel the difference in pull. Could you tell me what your max rpm is with the 12x6 prop so I at least know if the engine has a problem or am I asking too much from the old 60? Thanks

How would you keep fuel from spilling out the tank vent if not attached to muffler pressure?

CMP Giles Alternate CG check
The CMP Giles 202 instruction manual shows to measure 165mm perpendicular to the fuse centerline and then 85mm/95mm back from the LE to get the balance points on the wing either side of the fuse. If i draw a straight line across the bottom of the fuse connecting those two points can I balance the plane on the flat bottom of the fuse to determine cg? If I'm balancing on the same cog line that is perpendicular to the fuse does it matter weather i'm out on the wing or at the flat of the fuse? I don't have a fancy balancer to support the plane at the wing. Also, is the plane right side up or upside down when balancing the cog? Thanks

Thanks all. I'll try running it in a tube inside the fuse then poke it out the back and secure to the underside of the fuse. That way i'll be sure to need a new one when the fuse snaps in half during one of my training sessions. [:D]

rx antenna
What's the standard for rx antenna installation for nitro planes? I had a few foamies and taped the antenna to the outside of the fuse. I don't see too many nitro planes with the antennas on the outside. Should the wire just be strung out inside the fuse? Route it out the bottom of the fuse and attach to the outside? What works best? Thanks

RE: Where to get inexpensive Tx/Rx?
FM tx are going cheap the last few years as everyone is jumping on the 2.4 band wagon. Last year I bought a used 8ch JR8103 for $80 with the battery and currently use it. The 8103 is not a bottom of the line radio. I've seen JR7202 NIB tx listed for as low as $75 last year. This is a good quality synth. radio. The JR 6 channel FM used rx can be had for $25 or less. These are good computerized radios not in strong demand because they are not 2.4ghz. Check the radio section at RCgroups or Runryder. I've been flying 5 years with JR FM equip. and had no problems. I'm sure the equivelant FM Futaba radio equipment is selling in the same price range as the JR equipment I mentioned. I don't want to start an fm vs. 2.4ghz discussion (there are plenty already). I'm just trying to say IMO the FM equipment will not hinder your flying experience other than having to check frequencies when flying with a group.

Old ST 60 assembly
Engine is an ST 60 Italian made circa 1970's. took it apart some time ago to inspect and replace parts and forgot some details. The head has a tapered squish chamber with a slot at the deepest part of the chamber. There is an offset tab machined across the top of the piston that mates into the slot of the squish chamber. I thought I remember the piston assembled in the engine with the offset tab closer to the exhaust port. Is this correct or should the offset tab and head slot be closest to the transfer port?

thanks bonebreak. most responses indicate 12x6 / 13x6. I'll start with 12x6 since i'd like to avoid the prop contacting the ground on t.o. and landing until i get more experienced.

Bugzilla, I can't believe a collective pitch heli without a oneway but I checked the online manual and you're right. Definitely be a trick to fly with a brushless motor installed.

RE: Main rotor not spinning-help please!
check the set screw(s) that secure the main gear to the main shaft. The main gear should have a one way bearing installed in it and that slips over a small hub (inner race) that is secured to the main shaft by one or more set screws. If the setscrews come loose, the main gear rotates but the main shaft/rotor does not.

RE: ALL SHOGUN EXPERTS. $100.00 UP FOR GRABS
the shogun needs lots of head speed to be stable. In normal mode set pitch for low stick at minus 1-2 deg. while learning, midstick (hover) pitch should be plus 3-4deg. Full stick should be plus 7deg. Throttle curve settings depend on the motor you are using but to start, set the low stick to 0% then set the mid stick to whatever % gets the heli hovering then set high stick around 85-90% to start. You really need to tach the head to determine headspeed at low/mid/high stick to dial in your throttle curves but the settings above should get you flying. The tail/gyro setup is a little more involved. First verify correct tail blade and main blade rotation. Main blades should rotate clockwise as viewed from overhead and tailblades should rotate counter clockwise as viewed from the right side of the heli (right side meaning the side the tailblades are on). then plug the rudder servo directly into the rudder channel of the rx (bypassing the gyro) and move the rudder stick left and right. Left stick should make the leading edge of the tail blades point to the right (viewing the heli from the back). Right stick should make the leading edge of the tail blades point left. If the action is opposite of that described then reverse the rudder channel in the TX. Once the rudder channel direction is confirmed, plug the gyro back into the system. power up the tx first then the rx. rotate the heli clockwise (by hand - do not use throttle). as you rotate it clockwise, the leading edge of the tailblades should start to point to the right. If they start to point to the left then you need to reverse the gyro direction (usually a micro switch on the gyro). For safety sake, keep the motor unplugged from the esc while you are setting up until you need to spin up the blades. Get all this done and give it a try. Or, as BH suggested, buy him some lunch and get to see some good flying while he does the setup.[:)]

RE: Programming JR6102 transmitter for Heli-max mx400
Deprogram whatever mix you programmed into the radio. Your pitch will be adjusted by the pitch servo Travel Adjust settings and more so by the Pitch Curve settings. The throttle will be adjusted by the Throttle Curve settings. There will be 3 different flight modes for which you will have to adjust the Pitch Curves. They are Normal, Stunt and Throttle Hold. You will also need to adjust Throttle Curves for 2 different flight modes. They are Normal and Stunt. You can access the Pitch Curve and Throttle Curve menus by switching the radio on then pressing the scroll down and select buttons at the same time. Once you release them press the scroll up button until the screen advances to the Throttle Curve or Pitch Curve screen. The combination of the right pitch curve and corresponding throttle curve will get the headspeed where you want it.

8103 subtrim resolution
Danny, I just started setting up an 8103DT A version for my heli and noticed the subtrim intervals increase/decrease by 2 per click. I don't think the trim step affects the display increments and trim step is set to default - 4. Tried adjusting the trim step up and down anyway and it has no effect on the subtrim intervals. They go from 0 to 2 then 4, etc... is this normal? I assumed they would change by 1 digit per click. Thanks Mike

RE: Helo JR XP6103 Setup.
you can download the 6102 manual from the Horizon Hobbies site or I can email to you if you request. You may have changed the throttle curve or inadvertantly reprogrammed the esc. Also, a low battery can make a brushless motor spin very slow at startup even when full throttle is applied ....like it wants to start but kind of cogs around. Take the blades off or secure the heli down before you start experimenting with the switches and settings.
