RE: Tough Plane
ORIGINAL: rc airplane nut I have a buddy that flys a lazy bee alot. One day last winter we were flying together and he could land it on the 4 or so inches of snow and even taxi with the wheels[sm=eek.gif] and it was even soft snow. He has a .15 glow on it but I'm sure an electric motor would work. And its very low maitenanc. Its just not semi scale or a windy plane.
I had a Speedy Bee. It was the worst flying plane I have ever had. Required constant inputs, would not fly hands off and certainly was not wind worthy. I am now concidering a GP Super Sportster EP. I have seen good reports on the NEW one that is designed for an outrunner motor.

RE: New GP Super Sportster EP
Burc, thanks for the reply and info. I fly off a grass field. How well does it handle grass with the wheel pants installed. They are not critical but i like to use them when possible as they make the plane look better. Will the wire landing gear hold up to ruff landings or grass field landings? I am down to making a choice between the Sportster and the PT-19.

RE: Tough Plane
ORIGINAL: soarrich You're probably going to have to go to a Cub type, P-51 or PT-19. Flying off grass you'll need a taildragger, the nose wheel is 90% of the maintenance of a grass field plane. I flew a 60 size Cloud Dancer for five years, the only maintenance I did during that time was I adjusted the needle valve three times, never had the wing off of it until I sold it.
Rich, I am looking at the E-Flite PT-19 and the Taylorcraft as candidates for my Winter Flyer. They have good reports and look good as well. The P-51 would probably handle windy days better than these so I'm checking them out. I have not stopped looking yet. Thanks
Thanks Graham. I have flown the AirCore models a long time ago. Made from corrigated plastic, they are tough and VERY heavy. Although they are not semi-scale, they probably fit the bill for most of my requirements. I will look aroung to see what models they have.
ORIGINAL: Ernie P. It's kind of tough to beat a SPAD for toughness. And, they fly pretty well. Check out SPADFLYER.COM. Thanks; Ernie P.
Well, thanks Ernie for the suggestion. I am sure the Spads are tough. But they are just a square tube made with corregated plastic with a wing attached. Not what you migh call semi-scale. I would not get any personal enjoyment from flying that type of plane.

Tough Plane
I am getting set for the Winter building/flying season and I am looking for a good tough beater plane that I can take out during the winter. I have several electrics and a few nitros. I would like an electric ARF (36 to 50 inch wing - 3S power) that can take a beating on our grass field that will not get much maintenance during the Winter. I am partial to scale looking planes and therefore I don't want a "flying box". Foamies are OK but they aren't as "tough" as a good balsa plane. Semi-scale, tough, ARF, windy flyer, 10e-40e size in one plane may not exists. Any suggestions

RE: Wing Tip Stabilizer Mod
I found two aluminum aileron horns in my spares box. They are the tower (post) type horns. I glued them into balsa and cut the balsa into a square as shown in the photos. The aileron horn was for a 90 size plane so the screw was a bit big. I used it anyway as it was free stuff. Like you said, toothpicks would have been enough so this is 100 times overkill. I attached a few photos of the mod but now I have removable tips [:D].

RE: Wing Tip Stabilizer Mod
BMathews, thanks for the reply. The fins are built very light and would probably break off without damage to the anchor point should the plane flip over even if they are glued in place. That is an issue I had not thought of. Digging out the remains from the slot to repair/replace a broken fin would be ugly. I agree that the in-flight forces may not require a hard anchor but lost of a fin in flight may not be good for flight characteristics (unstable yaw). I would be nervous that the fin would pop out if it was just held in by friction. They currently fit pretty tight but that will loosen as they are reinserted repeatedly. Maybe a threaded rod embedded in the fin with a nut on the bottom of the wing will suffice.

Wing Tip Stabilizer Mod
I am building a Lightning Dart ARF. I am posting this message in hopes of getting ideas from scratch builders on how to make the wing tip stabilizer removable for easy transport to the flying field. I have made numerous modifications to this ARF to make it better in my opinion. However, the wing tip stabilizers present a major problem for transporting the plane to and from the flying field. They are just asking for damage as they are built very light weight as expected. I thought I would avoid the "OH no" issue by making these stabilizers removable. I would like something simple and quick as I hate major assembly at the field. I thought I would drill a hole through the wing near the center of the stabilizer to accommodate an attachment screw that would screw into a nut on the bottom of the stabilizer. Anyone got any thoughts on how I could accomplish this modification?

Lightning Dart (B2)
Hi all, I am building the new Lightning Dart flying wing ARF made by Richmodels. This is a 70 inch wing span model that can be electric or nitro powered. Anyone else built or flying this model? I am making several modifications to improve the NEW model to add some of the features that were on the original model. I have a build thread on my web site forum. http://iflyrc.hypermart.net

Have no done any 3D stuff but it needs little or no down elevator with this setting.

RE: Slow Performance
In any case, I have a work around that solves the slow fps situation. If I select any of the screen sizes for display, I get 13-18 fps. If I select the "windows" mode for display, the fps is very high (72 at 100% setting). I just stretch the display to fill the screen and I am good to go.

Slow Performance
I m running AFPD 1.8 and it runs slow (15 fps) even though I pushed the sim speed slider to 200%. I have a 2 gig cpu with a g-force graphics card with openGL drivers installed. However, I started the program yesterday and it was running at 70 fps. i had to move the slider down to 100% to get realistic speed. Then, today it went back down to 15 fps. Any thoughts on what the "bug" is and how to fix it?

RE: Deans Mini Antenna
Thanks to all for the comments and links for the Deans whip antenna. I was specifically looking for the Deans 2-piece as I have ued it on other airplanes. The whip is removable which helps prevent hanger damage and damge during transport to and from the field. I found one "in stock" at zoomsheli.com . I have a lot of respect for the Deans two piece for reception. I forgot to install the whip on a flight and had no problems. I was shocked to see it missing when I landed the plane after a normal 8 minute flight. Now I install a piece of weed wacker line with a flag on it as soon as I remove the whip. The flag reminds me to install the whip before taking to the air.

RE: Seagull Superstar 120. Weak spot repair!
Thanks Gary and Jim for the replies. I suspected the flight characteristics indicated a rearward CG. This is the way the plane came off the bench with no weights added (hate to do that). Most of my planes require some degree of down elevator for inverted flight so this is somewhat "annoying" for want of a better term. Can I live with it - YES. Will I add nose weight to compensate - YES, probably because don't think this is the plane to invest the effort to perfect my 3D skills. As I have stated, I am a sports flyer who sometimes performs "maneuvers of interest". If the plane responds well to my humble inputs, I go for some of pattern plane aerobatics. As for 3D stuff, I don't think I will ever try them with anything more than a foamy.
