RE: Which Engine for my OMP Edge 540 47
The Thunder Tiger has a bit more power than the OS FL-70. I can run a 14x4 on the T.T. but not the OS. I was running the OS FL with a 13x4 APC (not the wide) and Futaba 3004's on a 6V rx batt over the mud :-) . The FL-70 has been discontinued but it is a rugged little 4 stroke for sure. Not overly powerfull but like I said with 30% nitro it comes to life but makes a hell of a mess ! Oil all over the place. I've had to re-ply and recover one side of my fuse twice because of fuel saturation ! The TT runs much cleaner and with more power right out of the box. Not sure how it will pass the test of time though.... for the price the TT can't be beat. I bought it from Tower Hobbies with a $45 off coupon and I think it came to $190 shipped. Now if I can smash it into the concrete more than once and find it still runs it will be on par with my trustly little OS......

RE: Which Engine for my OMP Edge 540 47
no, I never tried the 13x4 xoar with the 55ax. I have not flown the Edge either.

RE: Which Engine for my OMP Edge 540 47
I had good results with a 13x4 W apc with my 55ax but lots of aileron needed when hovering and always lots of throttle. WIth the wide it will run at lower RPM"s but lots of torque . I now use an OS FL-70 with a wooden XOAR 13x4 and the difference is night and day. It's alot eastier to hover and fly around in high alpha, plus I run 30% nitro and have tons of power to pull out.... I fly a Ohio Models Pro Yak and just built a second one with a new Thunder Tiger 75 four stroke and it's unstoppable... I only recently switched to 30% nitro from 15% and the diffence in power is awesome, with faster spool-up, just a bit more expensive per gallon but my motor runs WAY cooler due to the fact you need to run it richer with the high nitro content. These are only 'cheap' four strokes and they work great if price is a factor. If not ,you could of course get a Saito and rock.....

RE: best prop for Pro YAk and Saito .72
Well Mike , I've tried the 12 x6 apc and MA S-2 and I want to say thanks for the feedback. I'm going stick to the 13x4W apc though. This profile is extremely stable and the lower airspeed and increased torque make it easier to fly for beginners like me. Since i've had your Pro -Yak I been able to fly maneuvers and hover like never before. I crashed into my Buddy's van last week and broke the fuse in half. Five dollars in balsa later and some covering she's good as new thanks to the carbon fiber rod ! (brilliant ! My last 2 Chinese profiles were not worth fixing!) Fortunatley it was his work van and I didn't have to pay for the scratches ! Your plane has even inspired me to order a kit and try some building ! This is my daily flier, and with a brand new four stroke on the shelf for back-up and a kit in the future I can fly indefinitely! here is a vid of me crashing ! enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s6UKyxuqjo

RE: best prop for Pro YAk and Saito .72
Well I tried a MAS 13x6 S-2 prop and there is quite a difference from the APC 13x4W. You need alot more aileron when hovering , the plane really wants to torque roll . I'll admit you can hover below half throttle and the airspeed is alot faster ..not sure if I'm going to switch to it full time yet... it's like a whole different engine ...

RE: best prop for Pro YAk and Saito .72
Thanks alot Mike, that what I was wondering. I was running a two stroke with the 13x4W and just went to the four stroke with the same prop . "Hovering is not all there is to "3D'ing". as for that quote. WTF ? Did I say that ? I'm looking to improve performance and find out what guys are using.

13 x6 MAS for hovering ? I'll have to put one on and try it.....thx -you ran that on a four stroke ?

best prop for Pro YAk and Saito .72
I'm using an APC 13 x 4W prop right now , just wondering if anyone is using something different for 3D performance ? I am able to hover at 3/4 throttle and this seems a bit excessive. Thinking maybe 14x4W...anybody flying with more pitch ?

RE: OS FS 81a in a 47
I have the sent the OS 81a back to Tower Hobbies as the advertised weight was off by over 2 oz !!! This only compounds my problem. I am going to try the FS-72a instead and maybe this will resolve some of the mounting issues and allow me to leave room for the intake. I can't beleive OS gets away with this. - 2 oz is quite a bit of lead ! The actual wieght of the engine with muffler is 610 grams almost 60 grams more than stated in the specs.....WTF ?

RE: OS FS 81a in a 47
I think I might try that. I nee dthe engine as far back as it will go and drilling out a breather hole doesn't sound like a good idea.

I found this intersting as I am having the same mounting problems with the new OS FS 81a and it's new 'venturi' intake http://saito-engines.info/special_tricks.html in regards to removing it all together....

RE: OS FS 81a in a 47
I see in the post before this one , someone is having the same issue with a Saito 82 and the venturie stack off the carb. I will ask OS tommorrow if I can run without it as someone in the other discusion suggested removing it for the Saito. If the extension off the carb is there only to suck up excess oil I think I can live with out, it if it means swinging a 15x4W instead of a 13x4W ! I am not crazy about cutting away the fuse.....

RE: OS FS 81a in a 47
here is the link to the specs: http://www.osengines.com/engines/osmg0981.html It is advertised as an upgrade to .70 four stroke size applications, but the problem is with the new carb design. It requires you to leave some space between the firewall so the carb can breathe as the new intake comes down almost to the bottom of the backplate. My OS FL-70 is a perfect match for the 47" yak and i have it mounted tight to the fuselage for CG reasons. I would like to mount the .82 tight to the fuse but the new carb doesn't allow for it. If I cut a bit out of the engine mount at the firewall it might work, but otherwise I have to mount it over one inch forward and my prop with be sticking out front over 1" and the plane will be too nose heavy. :-P

OS FS 81a in a 47" Pro Yak
Has anybody tried to mount one of the new OS four strokes ? The carb intake comes down lower than the motor mount forcing you to mount them towards the front. This not only lools funny (prop two inches in front of nose ) it requires adding weight to get the cg right. curious if anybody had trouble with this. thx

RE: Used OS FL-70
i heard all the bad stuff about the Fl-70 but mine has been running perfectly since I got it 6 months ago. It has been shattered on the pavement twice so I had to replace the rocker cover and head twice , bearings still fine, never had a deadstick, and it runs fine inverted....Can't beat it for the price but I wouldn't touch a Magnum with a ten foot pole. The worst O.S. engine is still better than the best Magnum.....

loose head bolts on a 120AX
Has anyone had problems with their OS 120AX or any of the other AX engines coming out of the box with loose headbolts ? I have cooked my engine trying to tune it before realizing this and I was wondering if it might be covered under warranty as the engine does not run well at all now due to overheating damage. It is only just broken in...kinda.......damn.
