RE: Early RC?
ORIGINAL: rrengineer Bob, Good to hear from you. I still have several unbuilt Early kits. So many kits, so little time. I retire in less than 4 years and plan to build, build, build with my new found time. Many of the kits you produced can be reproduced at Lazer Works. Eddie will cut a short kit from any plans you provide. Having you answer questions is a valuable resource. Wish I lived in your part of the country. Would love to attend some of the vintage meets you guys attend. Mike MacLean
Start a Vintage meet in CA. There is one up in Oregon IIRC. CA is a long state with a lot of people. You could have at least three fly ins in its length.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
Very good. FYI, I just noticed from your picture that you are using NiMh batteries. If you should have a similar problem in the future, replace the NiMh battery with a NICD or LiFe. The best NICD I have found is the Sanyo N700AAC. It has an ESR of 16 mil ohms. The NiMh I have dealt with, the factory told me they were just below 50 mil ohms. I am new to LiFe, but everything I read indicates a very low ESR.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
ORIGINAL: crigotti Thanks everybody for the nice comments. I do have a question though. I have noticed that the servos have a ''jitter'' to them across their entire travel and not just at neutral. If I move them a little bit off neutral, when the servo stops, the jitter is back. Move them full throw, and when the servo stops, the jitter is back. It's not much, but all of them do it and here's a kicker, they seem to do it in unison. I'm suspecting something on the encoder board. I could shotgun the board by replacing all of the componets, but I thought I'd get some feedback from here first. Perhaps the 50 hz oscillator?
I had this problem with the Spektrum decks in the MicroPro8000 (MP8K). What I found is the current draw of the 2.4 deck is not constant, but random spikes. This large amout of current caused the voltage drop to the encoder to be interpreted as a small stick movement. The MP8K is a processor driven encoder and the fix for it is not applicable with the Logictrol. Scope the +9 volts in the transmitter and see if it has a bunch of noise on it. Then cut off the RF deck and see if it disapears. A heafty filter cap across the power may or may not help. I have not scoped the FrSky RF decks to see how they behave.

With your die you are making cut threads. The rod is under size for cut threads. Roll threads are stronger than cut threads.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
OK, here is a drawing. The 2N2222 is a good general purpose small signal transistor of the NPN type. There are several that would subsitute as long as it is NPN. Notice the collector has no resistor to the positive rail. It gets its voltage from the RF deck. Most all 2.4 GHz RF decks made are designed to be driven with an open collector transistor. This allows the deck to use a different voltage and still work. The voltage from the RF deck PPM in line can be higher or lower than the driving circuit such as yours. For example, most 2.4 decks actually use 3.3 volts internally. Sometimes driving them with 9 volts causes a problem. That is why the DIY FrSky deck has a blocking diode in series with the PPM lead.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
JMP and I discussed the situation on Friday. He recommended a stronger pull down resistor from the collector of Q5 to ground. However, that is now a mute point as that is what you have done with the replacement circuit you have done. Your replacement circuit is the right direction as that gets the RF deck out of the picture. Looking at your scope traces, even though it works, I am leary of the down level of the PPM signal. If you plan on using this as is I would check it over a large temperature range, from at least 0 degrees and 150 degrees. However, I still recommend a 2N2222 transistor with a 47K from the base to the collector of Q5. This will present the open collector to the FrSky deck as the RF deck is looking for current flow only on the down level. You can add this to your new circuit easily.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
Have you scoped the output of Q5 to see the difference with the xtal working and shorted? It bothers me that it won't work unless the xtal is working. Removing L4 killed any RF out the antenna.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
Removing L4 stopped the final RF amplifier. The RF is still at the Buffer Q2 which is where the modulation takes place. Since Q2 needs to be working for the single shot to function tells me there is a loading problem for Q5. Did you try the parallel 2K2 resistor that JMP recommended. That should provide enough load for Q5.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
It looks like Q5 is bad or the 4K7 resistor feeding the base of Q5 is open which is not likely. I don't think the transposition of the 10 and 12K resistor would make much difference as that is the feedback loop to make Q4 and Q5 a single shot. The single shot takes the little spike from the half shots and makes it longer.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
ORIGINAL: JMP_blackfoot I would suggest a simpler solution: - Remove crystal, or rather just plain short-circuit it. - add a resistor of say 2.2k from the collector of Q5 to ground (across the 12k resistor) and a diode from the same collector of Q5 to the FrSky modulation input, cathode to Q5 collector, anode to FrSky module input.
Good idea JMP, I completely missed the 12K to the collector of Q5. BTW, I believe the DIY FrSky deck already has a series diode in series with the PPM in line. The early ones did not.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
After studing the schematic, this is what I would try after you get the encoder cleaned up. To interface a FrSky module to the Logictrol. 1) Remove crystal from the RF deck. 2) Remove the 4.7uh choke from Q5 collector to L1. 3) Remove C5 from the collector of Q2 to the base of Q3. 4) Remove the 100 ohm resistor from the base of Q3. 5) Remove L4 from the collector of Q3 to the plus rail. 6) Add a 10K resistor from the collector of Q5 to the minus rail (Ground). 7) Add a 47K resister from the collector of Q5 to the base of Q3. 8) Connect the PPM lead from the FRSky deck to the collector of Q3. It is now an open collector drive. 9) Connect the FrSky power leads appropriately. At the collector of Q5 you should see a negative going pulse and the collector of Q3 a positive going pulse when a load is present. Scope is referenced to the minus rail. The FrSky decks wll operate with either polarity of a PPM pulse and the width of the channel separator pulse (CSP) is not important. I have tested them from a 245 to 500 us CSP. If this doesn't work and you have a good clean signal at the collector of Q5 you may try a 2N2222 transistor in place of Q3. Right now I see no reason why Q3 shouldn't work. Others may have different suggestions. Note: I have never converted one of these, so this is strictly my opinion of how I would go about it.

RE: Logictrol 5 Encoder Pulse Stream
ORIGINAL: crigotti I'm starting to wonder if the summing amp for the encoder is part of the RF board? I see 5 transistors, 1 for each channel, and then 2 more for the free running multivibrator. Isn't there supposed to a few more transistors?
I was just studying your picture and I arrived at the same conclusion you have. The summing amp is somewhere else. Also it is important as to the type of transistors used in the circuit of the amp. If they are PNP then most likely the pulse is pulled up to the positive rail. The module you are trying to use expects an open collector to the minus rail. If PNP's are used you will have to install a NPN transistor circuit to be the OC interface. At the top right corner of the RF board are two black round transistors which I bet are the summing amp/single shot. Scope around there and see what the signal looks like.
