RE: Great planes ultimate 160
No, I didn't do anything different other than what the manual said. When we first started our building of these planes, we didn't know about any wing joiner failures, so I didn't do anything other than sand the joiner (it was to tight of a fit) and used the G'Glue. Believe me, it has withstood some "tasks of flight" and I have not had a single problem.....so far.[:-]

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
This "slop" that you are referring to is usually an unwanted feature on most planes that have a wing joiner setup. That is why I use gorilla Glue on all wings that are joined in this manner. The glue expands to fill those voids. I have been flying my Ultimate since this thread began, in fact, I flew it this past Monday afternoon...a MOST enjoyable and fun plane to fly. Of course, my choice of glue type is just my preference only.

RE: Introducing the new 90-1.20 Yak QB
Use of epoxy is fine. I just prefer G-Glue over using epoxy. Just a matter of choice.

RE: Introducing the new 90-1.20 Yak QB
Mac...Looks like you may need to modify the firewall by moving the T-Nuts to match your template. When I have to do this, I usually just fill the holes with G-Glue and the correct size dowel rod and re-drill.

RE: NEW DLE30!
ORIGINAL: DonLEmmel Has anyone had issues with their engine fading like it's gonna stall when coming out of a banked turn? It hasn't actually stalled yet so maybe my ears are just playing tricks on me.
Yep..sure have. You may want to do what I did and clean the wire screen filter in the carb. It was loaded with factory crap. After I did the cleaning and re-adjusted the needles, I have had no problems. Hope this helps.

RE: Has anyone tried the new PTE36R ?
ORIGINAL: CAT POwer 3136, I set the idle 1900 going to high rpm and back down 3 or 4 than its 1600 or 2200 set idle again and do it all over again........... never stay's the same. On my DLE's, CRRC's, Z'  i don't have these problems.
Sounds like you have a air leak somewhere. Check the tightness of the cylinder to case bolts...also make sure that there is a good seal there. I once ran across a problem like yours and found that the cylinder to case bolts were to long and was not letting the cylinder seal against the case...came from the factory that way. Engine was not a PTE.

Ace...Good to hear that you have your replacement. I'm sure that you will enjoy building it just as much as the first, since you know how "the build" goes now. You stated that someone else was flying #1 when it was destroyed and it wasn't the pilots fault, but I stopped letting someone else fly my planes a while back as I found that I can "crash'em" [X(] [:(] as good as they can and there are no hard feelings afterward.
ORIGINAL: acerc Thank's for the support guy's. But taking into consideration the mfg only call's for 50oz I'm going with Futaba 3010's. I have those on a 20cc profile and do very well with the size of control surface on it. If it don't go well with this ultimate I will let you all know and you all can say you told me so. I have a number of gas powered and never had a servo fail because of nylon gear's. We'll see with this one. Again Thank's, Robert
Ace... "I feel your pain" [:(] and sorry about your loss as with losing any type of plane but especially an Ulti. Get yourself another as quick as you can...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
ORIGINAL: acerc On the wing joiner's I laminated 1/4ply to replace the kit's. Even if it had not been recomended by those on here I would have done it. That balsa piece is just silly for a plane like this.
Another tip for you: Replace the 1/8" wood dowels that are inserted into the "I" struts with carbon fiber rods for better strength. When I built my Ultimate, I used the provided balsa joiner because I didn't really expect any wing failure due to the "box type" structure of the finished wing set. I used the "brown" Gorilla glue also and have not had any problems after many, many flights.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
P&W...You can usually get the carbon fiber strips at your local hobby store. The answer to your second question, IMO would be a 50cc and no less. You could probably hover with a smaller engine, but your pullout would not be there. Cut a new wing joiner out of either hardwood or pine and you would not need the carbon fiber. I used the suppplied joiner with Gorilla Glue and have not had any problems and I have been flying it since the beginning of this thread.

Wrap the elevator control rods with a few turns of copper wire before soldering for extra strength.

RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: prr6100 Sullivan, 5-12 lbs I think, have had no problems with it since upgrading
You can get by with just peeling away the covering at the tailwheel mount area and soaking the balsa with thin CA to harden it. I did that and used the Sullivan tailwheel and have not had any problems and I fly from a grass runway. Of course, the better way is to install some basswood or lite ply.

RE: TBM Goldwing RC YAK55M 30cc ARF Build
Ok, good choice on the servos...I started to go with the same, but I went with the MKS 1210 servos all but throttle. So far, they are fantastic!! Smooth and powerful. I know, I know..I'm probably gonna get trampled for going away from the "norm" here. But bear in mind, anything man-made is subject to failure at any given time and I have had some very expensive servos from a very popular brand that have failed me at a most in-oppertune time. [:(] Had one to fail as I did a surface control check before takeoff...PHEW!!! [X(] The other one ... I wasn't quite so lucky! [:(] I compared the manual for the DLE 55 engine and it makes no mention about using a petro based oil for break-in as does the 30!!!

RE: TBM Goldwing RC YAK55M 30cc ARF Build
ORIGINAL: gjhinshaw lrglnman, do NOT use senthetic to break the engine in!! You only want to use senthetic after break-in. Using senthetic to break a engine in will not allow the engine to seat properly.
I'm kinda at odds with that. "An old wive's tale as far as I am concerned." Synthetic oils now have a much better lubricating ability about them than some petro based oils. I have other gassers that even recommended starting off with synthetic oil. I'm just using the Lawn Boy because it was some that I had handy and already open. Much could be said and argued about this though and I DON'T want to start a "flare-up" about it. It all amounts to personal preference. White Gas=Amoco 93 octane OR Coleman Camp fuel. Coleman fuel does NOT have any ethanol in it whatsoever. That stuff can wreak havoc on any type carbs that have diaphrams in them. The Coleman fuel is "high dollar" though. Best to look for gas that has no ethanol in it. James, what servos did you go with?

RE: TBM Goldwing RC YAK55M 30cc ARF Build
Already have...A NGK CM-6 came with the engine plus the DLE plug...I didn't even bother with the latter. Will also be glad to finish up with the break-in run of Lawnboy oil and gasoline...makes a YUKKY black mess from the exhaust. I will switch to a 40-1 mix of Bel Ray MC-1 and white gas. Before you start running the engine, be sure to seal the exhaust gasket with a high temp silicon sealer...such as Permatex Ultra Copper, put some around the muffler bolts too...if you don't, you will have a gooey black mess all over the muffler. [:'(] Plain old rubbing alcohol will do a pretty good job of removing it though.

RE: TBM Goldwing RC YAK55M 30cc ARF Build
James, My CG came out at 5 1/4" and it flies great at that point. I placed the battery packs in front of the fuel tank. One 4.8 (ign) and one 6 volt pack (rec) stacked on each other. I have a transmitter that will allow me to setup a three-way switch for throws, so I went with 15 deg on low rate for all surfaces, then 25 deg for mid-rate and FULL-ON for all out aerobatics as to which she will do very well...[:D] Make sure you put in a good bit of expo, because she can be very "touchy" untill you get used to her. Hint...when you setup to land, keep a little throttle on or a high idle or she will tend to "dropout" on you. If you have ever flown a bipe then you know what I am saying. I am very happy with the performance of the plane and it was a pleasure to build also. The DLE 30 seems to be a little fussy about getting the "gurgle" out of it, so I am still adjusting the carb screws a bit at a time...don't want to get it to lean.
