RE: Typhoon 2+2
The Typhoon 2+2 is a two meter design and measures 78" length and wing span of 77 1/2". The earlier ones had shorter fuses.

RE: YS 140 no compression
1st off.... how much oil did you store it with? Ultra oil is now Mobil 1 0w20 synthetic oil and if excessive oil was use it will smoke for a while. If you feel the ring is stuck, pull the head off and submerge the top end in some raw fuel as it will take care of the goo.

RE: YS 60FR Header-pipe length ?
You are better off tuning it yourself. Prop, fuel, engine condition (New, not broke in or used), type of tuned pipe , etc.... all plays a roll in how to set the best pipe length for your particular engine. It is not hard to do! Just take your time and take small steps.

No, it is not me either #2 Most of these high price auctions sell to out of country buyers who are collectors. The buyer of that $2000+ one is from Switzerland. #3 One sold not to long ago in the same condition for around $600.00 but then the seller didn't ship out of the USA. #4 IT is only worth what someone is willing to pay. It just happens to be ALOT right now.

RE: OPS 60 in Classic Pattern Saturn
In the early 80's.... OPS came out with the gold head version of the 60 SPA engine. Now.... this engine is a beast. It is a five port short stroke engine that till this day is still setting records. Its ability to stay together and turn some pretty serious RPM's (depending on what model 60 Gold Head one bought) is in itself adds to the OPS legend. They are very few engines from that era that could match the OPS. These Gold Head engines is what made OPS the King of hill.

RE: OPS 60 in Classic Pattern Saturn
ORIGINAL: speedracerntrixie Ralph and Jim. The prop size and RPM figures that are quoted here are a little confusing to me. In my veiw the OPS just dosen't seem all that powerful. I have a Rossi FIRE .61 long stroke mounted in my own design warbird racer that has a Mac's 1160 pipe behind it. The last time I was out flying it was with an APC 11X10 bolted to the nose. I wish I could give you accurate RPM figures but it was well over 13,000. My educated guess would be slightly over 15,000 in the air. Enough for me to pick up an 11X11 to give it a shot. I have seen on the APC website that they sell a 12X12  '' .60 Pattern '' prop. My question is back when this was a current pattern engine, were guys having success with props this large. I am giving some specifics on my setup as well. Rossi .61 FIRE long stroke Pipe is 15.5'' plug to high point Added .5mm shim to run 15% nitro Enya #3 plug Exahust port raised .035 10mm carb Wildcat 15% nitro 18% oil + 2 oz castor added. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rossi-61-Rear-Exhaust-Gold-Edition-Pattern-F3A-engine-with-Header-/160760444505?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item256e11b659 That is a link to an engine that appears to be what I have currently on auction.
One thing you half to remember here is you are comparing the old 3 port, short stroke red head OPS engine of the 70's to a more modern engine like Rossi LS that is a 5 port design. When this OPS engine came out.... it was top dog. These engines set many records and are considered legendary because of this. In a scene... OPS set the performance standards as we know it today in short stroke engines. I believe Ralph still has some more RPM in the OPS to be had..... But it is a fine line to be pushing considering the vintage of the engine. I am not saying it will not do it.... as it is a very capable engine..... It is just parts are not easy to come buy now. The bigger props you are using came along when planes became bigger and noise levels were starting to play a role in pattern flying. That was when the LS engines came into play. The short strokes didn't like the bigger props due to they were made to turn higher RPMs where their power range is. Your numbers are very impressive considering the prop you are using. Looks to be a powerful engine.

Ralph, I have always had good luck with the push rod systems like the Dave Brown ones. You can see it here: https://www.dbproducts.com/index2.htm There are others out there that have carbon fiber tubes instead of fiberglass tubes........ It is just a matter of preference. Mark

RE: What kind of RETRACTS are on the market today
Dave Brown retracts are pretty much bullet proof. Take the time and set them up correctly on the end points and use a good retract servo. They can be bought here: http://www.dbproducts.com/store/sprt.htm They are one of the last mechanical retracts being made in the .60 size and up planes since MK is no longer and B&D is gone too. Sad because they both made excellent retracts that were smaller height wise then the dave browns ones. Spring air is also a great retract. They can be seen here: http://www.retracts.com/ Great retract for an air set. They make a retract series that is pretty much a drop in for planes that are equipped originally with Rhom Airs. Robart retracts...... in my opinion.... are inconstant with their workmanship. They do make a good air valve that can be fitted to Rhom Air retracts if you have a good set. They can be seen here: http://www.robart.com/store/retracts/aircraft-weight There are a few others out there that have poped up in the last couple years that make a retract like the old Kraft ones..... but I can not think of their name. Hope this helps. Mark

RE: Anybody interested in a NEW YS shortstroke? New, as in produced this year...
Will, With this low of a number being produced...... what would parts availability be then? I understand the drive behind this engine and the reason for it. I would just hate to buy a new engine and 1 year later something happens with very little to no parts support. I understand that we are in this exact predicament with the older engines.... But there were how many hundereds made so parts are still out there. Just thinking outside the box on this. Food for thought: Now if YS would remake 100 piston/liner sets with a better rod for the old FR I think you would have a 99.9% guarantee that those would sell in a heart beat..... I know... wishful thinking...[&o] Mark

RE: No more ceramic bearings for me.
Dog, I was talking to a guy that is a pylon racer about bearings for engines as I was interested in these ceramics for some of my engines. What he said makes total sense and reminded me of what happened to your engine. The ceramics are pretty much like what has been said about them being fragile... but the part that interested me was what was said about the phenolic retainers that really hit home. The common phenolic retainer are actually the weak link. Even the ones that Rossi used (with the steel balls) as the material (nylon impregnated) that they are made of does not like anything above 5% nitro as it softens them and leads to distortion of the retainer itself. They have bearings now that have phenolic cages that are polymer reinforced. These are the ones to look for as they can handle what ever fuel one want to use. Now... I half to do some homework and find who has these bearings with the phenolic / polymer reinforced cages with steel balls in a ABEC-3 rating. MK

RE: Question on Hanno's Magic .60.
Here is the header design you need for the Magic. This one is for the OS 61VF engine. http://shop.singahobby.com/?q=node/18155 As far as a 2nd muffler.......I could be wrong but I think he basically used a exhaust deflector off the end of the tuned pipe. I have seen them set up where the exhaust exited the bottom of the fuse or the side of the fuse. I do not think he would of used a 2nd muffler just due to the added weight.... but could be wrong.

RE: No more ceramic bearings for me.
OH YEAH..... This little YS 45 will turn that kind of rpm and will not miss a beat. I had one in a Flying Machine. It is/was the only plane that I have found that could out perform any 40-50 engine I have had. I tried to rip the wing off of it several times with no success. Guys in the speed form have been doing this with the YS 45's for a long time too.
ORIGINAL: Roguedog Happened yesterday and I already have a New YS 45 FS installed in the 50FSR's place. Will break it in tomorrow and see what it will do on the ground. That will get ya where you want to be.[;)]

RE: How did we get here ?
Well.... Here are some of the things I have heard over the years.... The old planes were to loud The old pattern style flying was more like pylon racing. It was harder to judge. (I don't get this one) etc..... Back in the day there were many who flew pattern as you knew it. The people were just as diverse as the planes were back then. When the switch went to turn around.... pattern flying went a different way. Many of the airplanes that were from the old days were no longer competitive for this style. Some bought new equipment while others said the heck with it due to the sudden rising costs to fly pattern competitively . Planes became larger along with the price tag and has developed into what you see today. BTW: send me a PM or email with what engine you are looking for from back in the day as I may be able to help you out.

RE: OPS 60 in Classic Pattern Saturn
The one thing that comes to mind that has happened to me after all the obvious has been looked at and/or replaced...... is the high speed needle seal. Exact same symptoms you are describing. It never leaked fuel but was just "loose" enough to cause a problem only in vertical maneuvers. Level flight and mild angle climbs up to 45 degrees... no problems. I am assuming this problem your are having is does not change regardless of the amount fuel is in your tank.
