RE: Wiring diagram for newbies
Hi John The external arming is not compulsary in Australia yet but the Australian Pattern Association are going to submit a rule to make it compulsary at the next rules change here in Australia but I think it will be only a matter of time before the FAI make it compulsary John

RE: Two 2M Pattern planes in a Subaru Outback?
Hi John No it hasn't got a turbo but it has got the 6 cyclinder engine which has got the same power as the turbo WRX it's a lot cheaper to run than the V8 I had when you were over here and it dosn't attract the attention of the law like the old V8 John

RE: Two 2M Pattern planes in a Subaru Outback?
Hi Bob I own a 2005 Subaru outback I often carry 3 2M pattern models I only remove the stabs to get them in when I travel to a contest I take 2 2M models plus a 1000w generator charging gear and a overnigth bag with ease I remove the stabs and put the 2 fuses in with the tails between the front seats I put a couple of peices of foam between the fuses to stop them rubbing against each other then put the wings and stabs down the side of the fuses I have the wings and stabs in bags to protect them I have had 5 2M models in I have to remove the gear from 2 of them to get 5 models in when I have 3 2M models in I still have room for a passenger in the front John

RE: Measuring the receiver output pulse Width
The programme box for the jeti spin 99 can give you the pulse width I am using a Schulze controller and used one to set my throtle end points on my JR 12x the travel adjust are high throtle 125 and low throtle 120 the 120 on low throtle reduces the brake just a bit the motor I am using with my Schulze controller is a Plettenberg 30 10 evo John

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Mike I have done the relube job on my hacker c50 now about 10 times it is real easy just follow the instructions that comes with the grease from hacker I use a tissue and toothbrush to clean old grease out make sure you don''t loose the shim washers from under the three gears those gears go back on with the writing on the bearings facing up just put a small amount of grease where they tell you to do and don''t use too much grease as it will just throw out any excess around the fan John

RE: CLPR's choice of airfoil on the osmose.
It is not a true laminar flow section but one of the modified "naca" sections nothing new about it I have been using it for about 8 years the high point is at 42% of the cord a lot of the Europeans have been using it for a long time John

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Glen A DS8411 is overkill for an aileron servo in a pattern plane if you need the power of a DS8411 to drive a aileron there is something wrong in my electric powered model I am using DS3401's for aileron a DS8411 for rudder and a single DS9411 for elevator I use 1 2S flightpower 800 mah battery through a powerbox digital regulator/switch which supplies 5.5 volts to the receiver the ailerons on my model are larger than the Beryll and the DS3401's have no problems moving them I use about 35 mah out of the receiver battery to do a P09 flight with electric powered models you need to save weight where you can or you will go overweight John

Hi armless how much of your right arm do you have I fly F3A pattern I lost my right arm above the elbow also in a motorcycle accident 30 years ago a standard single stick transmitter is no good to you email me and I'll give you my contact details and I'll explain to you how I do it I know most of your top kiwi pattern flyers they have all seen me fly John Payne

RE: Underpowered Sr. Falcon?
An 11x6 is way to much prop for a LA 46 try a 10x6 apc I learnt to fly with a Sr Falcon powered by a OS 40 back in the early 70`s and it had good performance using a 10x6 prop but it was hopeless with a 11x6 I currently have a LA 46 in a sport model with a 10x6 apc and has good performance using more than 10%nitro in the LA46 will not add any power to it I would reccomend you try a apc prop John

RE: David McFarlane - Slingshot F3A Australia
Have you spoken to Dave Macca he may have some photos of his early Slingshots back then they would have been his yellow, black and red colour scheme the Slingshot you have is the old 60 size from the late 1980s Peter Goldsmith flew them at the 1991 world championships powered by OS 61s it was the best 61 powered desgin of the late 80s early 90s in Australia so your YS110 should have more than enough power the 2 mtr Slingshot came out in 96-97 for the 120 I built Dave,s 2 Bigshot prototypes that he flew at the 2001 world championships which were YS140 powered

RE: Hacker C50-14XL Direct drive or Planetary Geardrive?
To use the C50-14xl in a pattern plane you must have the planetary geardrive fitted or it will not turn the big props with a 10s battery pack the C50-14xl motor is turnning over 40,000 RPM the planetary geardrive has a reduction of 6.7 to 1 which allows it to turn big props at 6,000+RPM I have a C50-14xl comp turnning a APC 20x15 at 6500 RPM + drawing 77amps using flightpower 5000 mah 10s1p battery packs John

RE: 140DZ Disassembly... HELP PLEASE!!!!
To remove the piston from YS engines 120 to 160 dz is the same fist remove the plug from rear of cylinder casting then remove small screw from the front of cam lifter housing now with the crank at bottom dead centre [I use small ball driver] insert it in the hole at the front and push the gugen pin and telfon pad out though the hole at the back of engine now the piston and rod will come out make sure you remove the cam before removing the crank the cam cover just pulls out after removing the 2 screws it has an o ring to seal it so it may be a little stiff to pull out John

RE: Why should I use a PCM receiver
I have used jr pcm recievers for years with no problems I also run the airal inside the fuse the only time I had a range issue was caused by the carbon fibre in the wings changing the freq fixed that problem JR does rate their recievers and servos to 6v but a fully charged 5 cell pack is close to 7v which is to high if you want to use 5 cell packs you need to use a voltage regulator I use 2 cell li-poly packs regulated to 5.5v

RE: Is 5 old enough to start training?
If she is keen to lean to fly I do not see any problems she may need some support for the transmitter in the form of a neck strap or tray her hands may not be big enough to reach around to use thumbs on top of the sticks the main thing at that age is that she learns because she wants to and not be pushed into it some of the top pattern flyers learnt to fly at a very young age I think that Chip Hyde was about 5 when he started to fly pattern John

RE: What are you working on now?
Hi I think I know the origin of this Cyclone it looks a lot like one Gordon made which was one of the later Cyclones which was reduced in size and modified to suit a YS91 Gordon made a couple of models like this one there were some diferencies between them but basicly they were scratch built one off before you paint it make sure it is straight I am not sure of its history of weather it had been damaged and repaired before you got it John

RE: What are you working on now?
Which version of the Cyclone are you repairing because no Cyclones were designed for a YS110 the first Cyclone was built in with a YS120 SC in it your picture is definately not one of the early Cyclones the later ones from 98-2000 had one piece wing with retracts and deep fuse were powered by YS140FZ and 140L the first fixed gear model had 2 piece wing came in 2000 powered by a YS140L the latest has different wings and stab and moulded fuse powered by 140DZ and up John

RE: cyclone build
Chris Remember to keep it light the Cyclone flies best if kept under 4.8kg your rx140 will strugle if it gets heavy especially in the wind go easy on the paint on the fuse a light model always flies better even in the wind so remember KEEP IT LIGHT John

RE: New Cyclone 2m - first flight
Steve The pipe floor takes all the crush loads the wings apply to the fuz any reinforcement of the area around the tube mount and incidence adjust mounts will just add weight not strength any hits on wing tip on landing etc the fuz will break behind the wings the moulded fuz is stronger than the wood prototype I can not make the fuz any stronger and keep them under 5kg the fuz is made up of 2oz glass 1/16 balsa and 3/4ozglass inside glad to here that you are happy with the way the cyclone flies John
