RE: Building a large foam plane
Barry Beach of Mainly Models in the UK had a kit for a blue foam // brown paper Lanc with retracts for 4 cheap 15s which flew VERY well. it was a limited production kit made to order. He might make one for you or sell you the plans.

RE: Flying wing gliding in high winds
Assuming you are talking of a flying wing like a Zagi. I have flown the snot out of these for years in full contact combat and dynamic soaring as well as everyday soaring. It will not matter HOW you drop it, just start with the controls at neutral eg normal flight and it will sort itself out in less than a 100 feet. Speed? a lightweight Zagi can manage 50mph in a shallow dive. See [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCYBU7-Bszw]CLICKY[/link] A ballasted Zagi can exceed a 100mph although if DSing one they come apart at around that speed. Ask me how I know this. This is not mine but a similar sort of thing See [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7-iZf44pC0]CLICKY[/link] I am assuming you intend to drop it and then fly it back to the launch point. If the balloon climbs faster than the L/D of the glider then that should not be a problem. Program the AP to fly directly towards the launch point then circle around the launch when it gets there. Assuming your AP has a 3D GPS input then programming it to attain the best flying speed to make best use of the height avaialble is a trivial ex. Allowing for a descent into lower wind speeds not quite so trivial but if you start with a relatively fast flying wing it will not be an issue. It will get back to you.

If it is a true 1/12th scale +- 10% then a 25 is too big. Keep it light and put in a good 15.

If you have 4 of them Barry Beach of Mainly Models does a simple Lancaster bomber kit. Mostly blue foam and brown paper. Flies VERY well and an easy build. I know there have been changes in his shop so he may no longer do it. Fits inside a medium size estate car. RE: Need Some Advice From the Experts
[quote]ORIGINAL: KFX450 I want to really take my skills up a notch and beyond with my jets and I have been looking into pattern flying. I fly mostly sport jets and I dont ever really push them past my limits. I get very cautious with a 7-10K sport jet, Money, time to build are mostly the factors with this. I can do basic aerobatics with them, but no where I would like to be. Im not looking to do competitons with the pattern flying, just for my self, practicing routines and so on.. I guess my question is, should I spend the $$, go out and buy a pattern plane practice with that??? Is that going to help me on the jet side?? Because that is my ultimate goal, to get better at knife edges, slow rolls, point rolls etc..Or should I just take out the foamy habu and use that?? I know practice is going to make me better, Im just looking for that vehicle to do it with..One thats not thousands of dollars..I would appreciate any advice..Thanks.. [/quote] An interesting question. I was in my 50s when I started to fly turbines. I was already a reasonably competent pilot and flew a variety of disciplines as well as jets. I flew pylon racers where the ability to be smooth to maintain speed and position the model accurately to shave the pylons was critical. I flew 12th scale combat. The ability to 'see' the whole sky and pick out the 'wounded gazelle' limping around with a streamer AND LISTEN TO MY SPOTTER was critical. Also the models were relatively small and orientation was often lost for a second if you looked away to find a target. That ability to pick up what my model was doing was important. I flew a old style pattern model a fair bit working on an advanced schedule [ BMFA C test ] The one model I flew more than anything else was a 50 powered 3D profile and I was the hooligan prophanging in corners of the field and doing low slow rolling circuits getting in the way of the fast movers. I think MAYBE the pylon racing helped me most with positioning the model in the air and the 3D helped most with manouvres AND helped with recovery if I had trouble with orientation in the air. However I am not sure, maybe at the end of the day ANY stick time is good. I found sims to be of little value but I know they help lots of people.

RE: Stick - 60
Std servos like Futaba 3001 3003 3004 will do the job just fine. If you get to the point where you want to attempt knife edge flight then the rudder servo will need an upgrade, something like a 3010 will do.

RE: Got my wings, what now?
The British Model Flying Association has a progressive training scheme. See here for free downloads [link=http://www.bmfa.org/achievement/index.html]CLICKY[/link] The one you want to look at is the fixed wing B scheme. Look at the examiners notes as well. Practice a subset [ say three ] of the manouvres on a single flight and once you can do them all well try stringing them together in a single flight. If you fly with someone who flies IMAC or pattern ask them to critique your attempts and suggest how they can be improved. That is what clubs are for. Mind you don't be surprised if they have a problem explaing what to do. Often those very good pilots are at the stage where they do things by reflex. The B test can done with a trainer. No fancy pattern ship required. The C test is another matter altogether.

There is a design for a large gas powered 'trainer' that has been around for a while in the UK. It is called the Greenley. Look at John Greenfield's Ghost squadron website for a free download of the plans.

RE: MDS .38H
I returned to the UK after 7 years sailing and went back to work and took modelling again. I met an old friend at the [ 1999 ? ] British nationals who was flying with the Ripmax display team and as he was using a MDS 38 in a fun fly and it seemed to be fine I went and bought one for the Limbo Dancer I was building. Over the years and many many gallons of fuel I had to put up with all the usual comments about how unreliable they were and how they would cut out. These were often made while I was prop hanging or doing some other high alpha manouvre at low altitude. There is a ghost web site with a contact address http://mds-engines.ru/eng/ The web site says that they started in 1975. The factory shut down some time ago around 2005 I think. MDS were sold and supported in the UK by RIPMAX. I had a total of three 38s i aero and two heli and they were good engines but did not like high nitro fuels and 2 of the three needed an hour of running before the idle was reliable. The two 148s I had also needed a long running in period. My first 148 had the unreliable carb and when I complained about it wanting the new and improved carb they told me to send the whole engine back. I did so expecting it to be returned with the new carb. The so and so's sent me back a whole NEW engine so I had to go through the running in process again. Over a ten year period I flew the snot out of those engines and I used to fly a lot. I got into trouble with the safety officer at one club who insisted that I should do a nose up test before flying. Two or three clicks richer in cold weather and other than that it was first flick and fly. I put a WestonUK Genesys throttle pipe on my 38s and got a little extra rpm. Here is a pic of the last model my first 38 flew for me, built as I wandered around the USA in a RV.

RE: How to get your plane outta of a tree ?
Crossbow or good archer with conventional bow fixed spool reel wth monofilament line around 20lbs. Heavier line. attach fishing line to bolt/arrow. Shoot over the branch. Use fishing line to pull heavier line over branch. Work at pulling plane down. Last resort get a climber to use HIS rope and pull it over the branch with yours before climbing up.

They were hacking holes in the deck to basically fill the boat up with water to put out the fire.

RE: Perhaps the dumbest question of the month
Nope good question. Lots of models that I flew would only require rudder on takeoff and steering on the ground after landing [ and stall turns ] A few large biplanes looked better in the air when rudder and ailerons were used together on turns. But they flew fine using ailerons only. The only time I felt I definitely needed rudder as well was when flying high aspect ratio gliders.

RE: nylon bolt extraction / removal
Heat the end of a screw driver and push it into the broken bolt. IT forms a tight fitting slot. Remove and let it cool for a second or two. Refit screwdriver and unscrew broken bolt. Even stiff bolt will usually come out.

RE: Craziest thing you have done in this hobby
OH DEAR WHERE TO START Flying single channel RC in the early 60s with only 100 yards air range. You ONLY flew upwind of the large ground based transmitter and you limited the engine run. Trimmed my 049 powered Mcutcheon flying machine to sit in ground effect at about 9 inches altitude and launched it at the evening upwind of the ff session at the British Nationals. Built a 61 powered version of a Mcutcheon flying machine using an old 12 foot glider wing [ the club did not let me fly it untill I put RC on the throttle.] Built a catapult version of a EE Lightning using a broomstick and 1/4 ply for the wings. Launched with three strands of 1/4 sq catapult elastic pulled back to breaking point. It disappeared on launch made a large loop and we heard the impact . It required a spade to recover it. Drove from the UK through Holland Belgium Germany Denmark Sweden and Finland to the 1966 World CL champs to do a CL Combat demonstration. Flew an RC model at night with only a red light on one wing tip and a green light on the other. Was a participant in a ZAGI combat session 22 flyers lined up on a hill side with 22 Zagis. Marks for hits and kills But the craziest, well stupidest thing I personally did was flying a Morris Hobbies 3D Sledge over an indoor swimming pool, launching it by holding it vertically and picking it out of the air by hand from the prop hang at the end of the flight. Mind you I was on the edge of the world record attempt be a fellow club member who was into building his own Jet engines. He acquired a small but full size jet engine and borrowed his mother in laws wheel chair. The rest is history. Go Giuseppe Cannella Go. Now that WAS CRAZY.
