RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Thanks opjose, I didn't want to add the weight to the Stearman, but it wasn't a case of them wearing out, if I take it off its stand for more then a minute the Dave Brown Lite Flites would get a considerable flat spot and then its wobble wobble wobble..... I am rolling along with the build, have the 52 mounted and need to figure out some throttle linkage. Speaking of my Great Planes PT 17, I thought it was the exception when it came to loose covering, but this stick took several hours, and a new heat gun (old one couldnt take it!), I finally got it under control. Here is a pic of what it looked like out of the box.....(anyone else had this issue?)

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
While on the topic of wheels, I need some opinions. I had bought a pair of wheels from Hobby King for a great planes PT-17 as the 5" foam wheels I bought for it tend to get flat spots very quickly. They are also 5", but seem really heavy, about 7 oz each with the "hubcap." I was thinking the big stick might not notice the load, but I kind of worry about adding just under a pound just for wheels! Any thoughts or opinions would be great, thanks!

RE: NGH 35 CC Gas engine.
Had mine rotated to rear exhaust mode. I'm just going to install it in the new bird and taxi all the way down to the end of the runway before take off. This way if it burbles, I will get off it while having room to roll out, and try some tuning. If I cant work it out I will just bench it all together. Either way, I'll let you know how it goes.

RE: Walbro WT 610 help
ORIGINAL: Truckracer I doubt your carb needs that surge diaphram. You certainly need the pump diaphram and the thick gasket that goes between the diaphram and the cover plate though.
Ya I have that, and just looked for some kits on line and none come with the surge diaphragm. Its odd, two 610's, both not working the exact same way, both pre and post rebuild, both on multiple motors that run on other carbs. Maybe the are somehow just not the right size or design for this kind of motor? Anyone know what the next in line to replace a 540? Or even just a good carb for a Quadra 50?

RE: Walbro WT 610 help
Thanks everyone for you help so far. I checked the pulse port and its not being blocked by anything. I also blew wd40 thru the ports and everything on the high side worked. On the low side it did not blast thru the same holes though. When squirting the through the low speed needle hole (yup, breaking out the tech terms now!) it would come out the inlet needle valve and not through the venturi that I could see. I also double checked the walbro web sight to make sure I put it back together right. I noticed that the IPB http://wem.walbro.com/walbro/product2.asp?Series=WT&partnum=WT-610-1 shows a part # 33, surge diaphragm, that neither carb had, nor did one come in the kit (k20 wat). I kept all the extra parts from that kit and am looking at them now, and I dont see it. Sounds like a part one would need doesnt it? Or is this something to do with primer pump section that this carb doesnt have? Neither 610 came with the fuel pump spring either. I know walbro makes a hundred variations for a thousand motors, so its king of hard to tell what a generic version is supposed to have when researching a specific parts list.

Walbro WT 610 help
I'll try to make a long story as short as possible: Came across an older engine (webra bully 35) and while getting it back into shape I replaced the old HDA 48 with a WT 610. Didn't run, rebuilt the carb, then it would only run on prime then die. Dinked around with that for a while, finally replaced the 610 with a WT 540 and all was good, figured the 610 was bad. Came across another oldie, a Quadra 50, and decided to see if I could get it going. Stock carb, not running, stock rebuild, not running, just for fun I put the old bully HDA 48, it ran but not good. Thought I'd try the WT610 just to see what would happen and it was an exact repeat of the bully-run on prime then die. At that point it told me the ignition was good, and I could feel it had good compression so I thought I would try another new WT 610 as you cant really get the 540's any more. The carb was new and had not seen fuel, plug it in, and guess what,,,,run on prime,,,die. Took the new diaphragm kit from the recently rebuild original 610 and put it in new 610, prime-run-die-lather-rinse-repeat. And this is after playing pin-the-tail-on-the-high/low needle-settings for an hour. So for fun I threw on the WT 540 from the bully on it, and VVVRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM, ran like a top, telling me its the carb... So my question is this; is there some Walbro ritual I am not aware of when it comes to the WT 610? Perhaps something involving an old hubcap, some chicken bones, and an open flame that must be performed on the last Wednesday of the full moon cycle? Is the 610 a POS, or was I lucky enough to get the 2 that comprised the .02% of the acceptable factory failure rate? (meaning I should have bought some lotto tickets instead...) Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

RE: TGY 52
Don't know if anybody is still watching this thread, but here is my story. I've had this engine in a box for a while and decided to take it out to run it in. Replaced the plug to an NGK before anything, mounted it on my stand and thought I would check the timing. It was about 50 deg btc, tried to adjust it and could only get it down to 40 deg btc. Anyone else have this issue? My first thought was to dill and tap 2 new holes for the pick up bracket, but the left (looking at front) hole would be right on the edge of the embossment and might not even then be enough to get down to 30 btc. Im sure the shaft is keyed? Pulling the front hub and rotating the prop shaft wouldnt then be a option? If it was the opposite problem I would just sink a new magnet in the hub, but as it is that wouldnt work either. Any ideas, or just go for the two new holes? Thanks!

You know the more I think of it, I do believe that it was this thread where I saw these. They must be counting on the 100 degree to put the wheels fwd enough. I dont think anyone, that I remember, used them. They were going with the plastic ones from PW RC: www.pw-rc.com/product_info.php/cPath/137/products_id/2381 . I thought about it but I think Im a bit too heavy for these. He has them on ebay as well. I have siera's I was going to use but didnt want to chop up the main spar, and ended up using them in a 140 size p40 anyway.
ORIGINAL: bignasdy Looks Nice! May I say one little thing? [X(][8|][:-][:@][:(][:D] Ok, ....I dont see any vibration isolation for the rec. or batteries...? Wrap those things in foam...they should be able to withstand a crash without taking damage . [8D] I wish you well! [:)]
Thanks for the input. The receiver is a 2.4 so I rely on the two sided velcro to eliminate some of the vibration, but wrapping these receivers in foam tends to cook them. I used to wrap my fm's as the crystals were susceptible to vibration, but if I crash hard enough to brake an unwrapped 2.4 receiver, then if it was wrapped in foam it might be "just good enough" to fail in flight in a new air frame. Plus the danger of cooking one in flight is not worth it to me either [X(]. For the batteries, I go back and forth on wrapping those. Where these are mounted the cross brace will act like a "crumple zone", and the two sided velcro will also act to reduce vibration. They are A123 cells I made, so I would rather risk keeping their longevity by not overheating them anyway. Again, if I crack up hard enough to brake a pack, its cheaper to make a new one then have one fail in flight. I'm not saying its bad advice, and I do appreciate the input, but for me I like to go this way. [;)]

RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
So here is it pre-maiden. I wanted to take it out today but had too many little things left to do and did not want to rush it so maybe Tuesday. Ran a tank through it last night and everything held up. I will most likely go with a topflite 15/8 or 15/6 for the maiden, then switch to the 14/7 3blade once all the kinks, if any ( l hope ) are worked out. The weak link is the gear. It came out to 11lb. 2.1oz, so its a bit wobbly, will really have to glass the landings. Moving the servos to the back really helped out the balance, I didn't have to move the batteries as far back as I thought as you can see in the first pic, and its is a tad nose heavy at 5 1/4", but I would prefer that anyway. I also added more holes for cooling, and opened up a couple of larger ones. If its not enough I will just open them up more instead of adding more little ones, starting to look like a cheese grater. I'll report back after the maiden, cross your fingers ( now Im off to clean my workshop after this "tornado" of a build... )
ORIGINAL: Speedy-Gonzales They are very powerful engines but they were not balanced very well and would shake the begeesus out of a good airframe. Here we go again! Just when you thought it was safe to go back into your shop... Just got this as part of a trade (sort of the thing thrown in to "sweeten the deal" ). It is believed to be a Sachs 3.2 with a Bennett mount and B&B muffler. I can say that it weighs a ton, but for a warbird like the CMP 80" Zero, that would be great. Anyone recognize this thing, or should I go fishing with a new post?

RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
Did some calculating and the holes totaled about a 2-1/2" square. Most likely not enough. I used the dummy radial as a baffle only opening it up in front of the cylinder, but will have to either add more holes or the dreaded one big gaping maw that looks like a beaver got a hold of the cowl (what I was trying to avoid). I didnt want to channel all the air, being a gasser, it will need some movement over the e.i. unit so it wont have a melt down.
ORIGINAL: Warbird Man Looks awesome! I would highly suggest ''brazing'' all your copper pipes together on your exhaust system. It does get hot enough to melt silver solder and have parts falling away. ( learned that one the hard way)[;)]
Man I never would have thought that! Thanks for the info. I ended up swapping out the copper pipe for brass tubing as the weight was getting out of hand. I'm not sure if the tubing will survive the heat of braising, which makes me wonder if they will survive the heat of exhaust? I was hopping the bigger muffler would soak up some of that heat before exiting, but just in case I bent up some sheet metal to go under the tubing so it wasnt on the wood. Wonder if the paint will make it. Perhaps small self tapping screws in the joints just to hold the pieces in place if the solder goes would be worth it. As it is now, the only part that could really get away are the two 45 elbow as the copper you can clearly see against the black are straps screwed into the fuse. Here are some better shots of what Im talking about:[image][/image]
bignasdy: Nice!
Thanks!

RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
Hello all, I have been a spectator of this post for a very long time. I bought my F6F after the original review came out, back when the G20 was the "newest thing." After putting it off for ever I finally decided to put this one together. After doing some repair to another plane I finally got the "bug" to take on a mod like this, and since the color scheme of this guy was never great, I found a pic of the RAF version and decided to go for it (after I contacted Callie at callie-graphics.com and told her what I needed, she calculated the size and nailed it dead on. She is great and recommend her to anyone, and her prices are also better then any I found). I have to admit this is my first go at anything like this, both in painting/covering and in simply cutting into a model for more then average beefing up or re-work like most arf's need (so don't tear me up too bad on the critique!) . I have learned a lot, and I have ripped off a lot of great ideas from this forum: So far I have done the horizontal stab mod, relocated the elev/ruder servos to the back to reduce weight, cut the fire wall to get that full scale look as well as add exit air space for cooling (ala-Hepdog, not as good as his, but it works), relocated the servo tray fwd to hold a 10oz tank closer to CG, shimmed the gear a bit fwd, and of course paint, weather, and seal. Inspired by 60buick's home-made exhaust, I decided to use two of the "air exits" as actual exhaust ports and reconfigured a G26 muffler I had to put my own spin on this idea. I added another layer of ply to the fire wall, and glassed the inside to beef everything back up. For the gear doors I swiped hellcat 1's idea, but didn't go as far as he did (not That dedicated yet!), then punched a bunch of little holes in the cowl to increase cooling, and am hoping its sufficient as I think it looks better then one giant hole, we will see! I am at the point where I just mounted the engine and since I took out the push rod tubes, I can reach farther aft and plan on balancing it with two 1000mah 6v A123 packs I made for the receiver and ignition (Rcexl so I dont need a brick of batteries for the Zenaoh unit). I am also using a 750mah 2c lipo for a spectrum high voltage retract servo, so all this should be able to offset the weight of the engine and horribly heave 'Frankenexhaust' unit (along with the relocated servos). I'll post some more pics when its done, if anyone is still watching anyway. Thanks everyone for all the great ideas! Jim

RE: Webra Bully and Walbro carb help
For the "reburpitation", I think the original carb did that due to the fact it was missing the o-rings from the hi/lo needles. In order to find the right spot to run with the extra air coming in it worked out to be rich at certain rpm's. Now with the new carb and ring, things are moving along nicely. I set up the stand and fan and let it idle, at varying rpm's, through a 16 oz tank of fresh gas, non-synthetic 32:1 oil. I could tell it was running rich but didn't care, just let her go. Second tank I adjusted the low needle and let her go again, and again varied the rpms with the idle screw. Now she spins up with authority, no blurping or slurping. You can "stab" the throttle a couple of times with no ill effects. "Damn it Jim! I think its there!" I'll play with it more tomorrow and tack it then.

RE: Webra Bully and Walbro carb help
So the latest update to the story: New WT 540 and gasket thanks to Speedy G, new plug, new Bowman ring, new base gasket, new Rcexl ignition unit with timing set at 28 deg btc., new Jtec muffler, still using the Zinger 18/10 I am now getting 6850 and idling at 1500. There is still some tuning to do I'm sure. Once warmed up it likes to bog down when you advance the throttle so you have to go slow. I tried richening and leaning both needles in a myriad of combinations, but no luck yet. If nothing else I will just slow down my servo thru my radio. I think once the ring seats I will break that illusive 7k mark. With the Zenaoah velocity stack it is no longer spitting fuel, but that may also be the new carb fixing that. I also plan on swapping out the prop for a Xoar 18/10 or maybe even an 18/8, will see how it goes. It came with a Zinger 20x10/14 so I think some of its problems came from being over-propped by the original owner. Thanks to all for your help bringing the bully back from the brink. Its new home I think will eventually be an ESM F4U once I sell off a couple of things. Keep the insights coming if you see something I miss! Jim.

RE: Webra Bully and Walbro carb help
Thanks Captn and Speedy for the continued help. I was hoping to just use the 'rings' for a new ignition, but when I plugged the Rcexl from my NGH35 into the system, the pickup did not trigger the unit. Im sure the magnet is the same, but the pickup from the CH unit I think works differently. If I use the ring with the magnet would I not need to fashion a way to hold the pick up to face the magnet instead of down as the stock brackets do? Or is there a way to make the pickup face forward Im just not seeing? This must be getting old for you guys, but I really do appreciate all the help. By the way, the spacer on mine is not phenolic but metal, I had thought of drilling new holes in it to rotate the carb, but its hardened and I didnt want to screw it up. By the way, rcexl unit is now on order, so Im officially in it as much as a new motor!!!
ORIGINAL: captinjohn I prefer always to spin out a collar on my lathe. Unfortunately I dont have a lathe. I was thinking perhaps I could just use the 'rings' from the old ch unit but Im not sure the magnets would be correct. Any thoughts? Just ordered another carb from Speedy, great guy by the way. Im on the fence, still, again, as usual, (take your pick!) about swapping out the old ch which is functional, but apparently not great from what I am hearing. The only hang up is the plug type, 3/4 14mm (odd mix match of verbage there) with the BPMR6A plug thats in it, and the pickup situation. Hobby King sells a unit that would work, basically their version of the Rcexel, of which I have one that works great on a G20, but I am not sure if their 14mm boot would fit my plug, could be 5/8, could be 3/4??? And it still leaves me with engineering a pickup magnet. Do you know if the Rcexel units come with the hull sensor at all? Im figuring its would all have to be bought separately correct?
